A Brush with Death Owl to Join Finished

Amanda’s eyes fluttered open. What the heck? This isn’t my dorm. Where am I? She heaved herself into a sitting position, wincing as she felt a sharp pain in her head. She reached up to touch her forehead and discovered that there were bandages wrapped around her head. Wh-what happened? Amanda looked around. The nurse wasn't anywhere in sight. Sighing, she laid back down and closed her eyes.

Then Amanda remembered. The crazy vampire Prefect. He tried to kill me! They had been in the corridor late at night, with some other kid who had had a nightmare or something of the sort. Then, for some reason beyond her, Kaegen had whipped out a slingshot and struck Amanda square in the forehead, rendering her unconscious. Amanda briefly wondered what had happened to the other boy. I hope he’s okay. He was a little unnecessarily rude, though.

Amanda glanced at the clock. It was 8:22 AM. I’ve been out for several hours. I hope that there’s not any permanent damage. Oh, I’m probably also missing some of my classes. I’m sure that I’ll be able to catch up later. Amanda’s head began to ache so she closed her eyes, wishing the pain away.

A little Ravenclaw with short blond hair skipped down the hallway carrying two baskets full of presents for all the sick people. It was Skylar, and she was actually genuinely sorry for anyone who got hurt. She use to cry all the time when someone hurt themselves, even stub their toe or get back pain. If anyone said even the word 'ouch' she'd start bawling.

But it was different times now. One she was older and two she was at a mysterious and strange school and magic was in play. All she wanted to do right now was to release her anger from earlier with Mosquito Boy, and helping others feel better was a great way to start. She'd always loved giving people a helping hand, as long as it benefited her. This was helping her to calm down.

Skylar propped the door open with her foot and slid through, accidentally banging the baskets around but luckily nothing toppled out. She quickly hurried over to a nearby bed and sat down, sorting through her stuff. She'd had gathered up candies, treats, stuffed animals, cards, and funny trinkets, things that probably would've made her happy if she'd ever gotten any. But no time to think about sad birthdays now, she had people to please.

Skylar picked up a large teddy bear, a box of chocolate frogs, a pack of exploding snap, and some other stuff and went around giving things to people. People said thanks and smiled which made her a little fuzzy inside. She almost giggled in happiness but that's when she got up to a girl with her head wrapped in bandages. "Whoa," she said, looking sorry for her. "You look like you ran head long into a brick wall."

Amanda opened her eyes when she heard someone speak. She smiled weakly at the blurry shape that she assumed was a girl standing by her bedside. “If only that’s what happened. This crazy Ravenclaw Prefect thinks that I’m the devil incarnate or something. You’ve probably seen him around; dark hair, dark eyes, looks like the living dead?” Amanda shook her head and laughed humorlessly. Who would’ve thought that my second year would be so crazy? I’ll be lucky if I make it back home for winter break in one piece.

Amanda groped for her glasses on the small nightstand. When she located them, she put them on and blinked rapidly, her eyes slowly adjusting. There was, in fact, a girl by Amanda’s bedside. She had short blonde hair and blue eyes. Amanda was happy to have someone to talk to, even if the girl was somewhat of a stranger. Amanda noticed the basket that the girl was carrying. “Have you got an injured friend or something?” Then Amanda remembered to introduce herself. “I’m Amanda, Amanda Sparrow. You can call me Mandee if you’d like. I’m kind of trying out the whole nickname thing and seeing how it goes. What’s your name?”

Skylar narrowed her eyes. "I only hope I don't know who you're talking about, but you've described him perfectly, so there's no doubt in that." The person Amanda was talking about was someone she didn't like very much, after their heated argument in the common room. Skylar had only asked him about how a witch could be born from Muggles but then it ended with him insulting her and getting every other Prefect involved, almost the Head of Ravenclaw, too. She wondered if Kaegen would've really tried to kill her on the school grounds or if that was just how he treated girls.

"You're not the only one being called a devil, just know that." Skylar placed one of the teddy bears, a "Get Well" card, some pretty hyacinths--which she'd stolen--, and a box of chocolate on top of Amanda's blanket. She stared at the bandages on her, wondering what had happened, and where were the more responsible Prefect during that situation. She shook her head in disgust, but not at the girl.

Sitting at the edge of the bed, Skylar sighed and looked around the Hospital Wing. "No, none of my 'friends' are injured, luckily, but that doesn't stop me from still coming to this place to try to make other people feel better." She lifted up a card with a dancing monkey on it, which said 'I love you so much, you make me go bananas!' She smirked at the corny joke and threw the card back into her basket. "I'm Skylar Motting, Ravenclaw, and don't call me anything else. I think Sparrow fits you better than Mandee. That's just begging for someone to call you Mandarin, like Mandarin Orange."

She spread her hands in the air in emphasis. "The Sparrow." She grinned down at Amanda. "That's a pretty cool superhero name."

So she’s had a not-so-good encounter with Kaegen also. It seemed to be a common trend, especially in Ravenclaw. Amanda wondered just how many other people were suspected by Kaegen of wanting to hurt him.

The girl placed some gifts on Amanda’s bed and Amanda smiled. She picked up the teddy bear, tucked it under her arm, and opened the box of chocolates. After popping one in her mouth, she offered it to the girl. “Want one?” She set it down on the bed, leaving it open in case the girl wanted some chocolate. “That’s real sweet of you to come visit everybody in the hospital wing. I’m sure they all appreciate it. I know that I certainly do.”

“Nice to meet you, Skylar. I’m in Ravenclaw also.” Amanda grinned and laughed a little when Skylar threw her hands in the air and called her the Sparrow. “Sparrow’s nice. It sounds free and kind of poetic, if you know what I mean. I changed my mind. Call me Sparrow instead.” Amanda then picked up the flowers, smelled them, and set them on her nightstand. “Thanks a lot for your visit. I guess I really needed a friendly face to talk to.”
