First Year: Book Shopping
The store seemed endless. Most would find it difficult to navigate, but Brooklyn had been to enough Muggle libraries in her first eleven years.
“Do you need help, sweetheart?” her mother, Mrs. Grey, asked as Brooklyn went to speed off.
“I’ll be fine!” Brooklyn protested, glaring at her mother.
“All right!” Mrs. Grey smiled, releasing her grip on Brooklyn’s arm. “Just be careful!”
Brooklyn sped off to find her books. She grabbed everything that she needed within ten minutes. As she made her way back to the front of the store, a book caught her attention.
“Mom!” she yelled, running through the shelves to Mrs. Grey, who was chatting with the owner.
“Yes, Brooks?” her mother asked, raising an eyebrow and smiling.
“I saw a cool book,” Brooklyn said, wincing at her mother’s nickname for her. “It’s called, ‘Hogwarts, A History’. Can I get it?”
“We’ve already spent enough, Brooklyn.” Mrs. Grey said pointedly, taking her books and putting them on the counter.
“But Mom!” Brooklyn complained. “I want it!”
“How much is it?” Mrs. Grey asked, pulling out the Galleons and Sickles from her purse. They’d gotten them from Gringotts, which, thankfully, could spare some money to a Muggle and her magical daughter.
Brooklyn raced around the store to the book. Her face fell when she saw that it was for a Galleon.
“I’m sorry then, sweetheart,” Mrs. Grey smiled sadly. “Come on, now! Let’s go get your wand!”
So they left, leaving the only book in the world Brooklyn wanted at the moment behind them.
