The sound of approaching footsteps, elegant and supple, alerted Robin to wipe her face with the sleeve of her cloak, instantly soaking up what remained of her drying tears. The girl sat in the bend of an oak tree, on a branch so far from the ground that if she fell, she would almost certainly be making a trip to the infirmary for a few broken bones. The sun that was cast through the leaves settled on Robin's face, leaving odd-looking shadows on the ground that held gangly limbs out in front of them, resembling the shape of the walking dead.
Robin had fled to the grounds after class, wanting to hide and brood in a place where she wouldn't be bothered. The tears were somewhat unexpected, considering Robin wasn't quite sure why she was crying. Maybe it was the owl she had received from her sister, Sam, at breakfast - the letter expressing just how much she had struggled throughout the year without her big sister around, and how she was so excited to spend the entire summer together. Or maybe it was the fact that she had been thinking about the fact that going home was truly quickly approaching. Home. Just the thought alone of getting to lay down in her own bed next to Samantha - watching a corny television show on the worn couch with her Mother - even wandering the shell-lined beaches with Jeremiah. Robin had been so excited to leave home for Hogwarts. It was an adventure in itself to be told of magical powers and be whisked away to Scotland, where she was taught by the most phenomenal witches and wizards she thought she'd ever meet. But it was slowly coming not to an end, but a pause, and Robin felt so much more anticipation and heartache than she'd ever imagined at the thought of being reunited with her family.
When Robin had scaled the oak tree, climbing up to the most sturdy limb halfway up the tree, she had been planning on writing a letter in response to her sister's - the tears had come when she had no words to inscribe on the paper. Words. Robin was good with the kind of words that go on parchment in a classroom setting - describing the steps to brewing a good antidote, easy enough. Straight-forward instructions and clear language were one of Robin's favorite ways of describing something - the facts were easy. Yes, Robin missed her sister. Yes, Robin loved her sister. The emotions. The emotions beyond the surface - the ones that could put those feelings into words that worked to soothe someone, to ease their comforts. The right words. Those are what she struggled with. And it was incredibly frustrating for someone who felt so damn much, a jumbled mess of emotions swirling and twisting inside her chest as if they were physical manifestations of a couple doing a very aggressive interpretation of the tango.
By the time the footsteps came, Robin had been on the edge of sleep, eyes fluttering and breaths evening. Jumping slightly, Robin leaned off the ledge of the branch, adjusting her foot to settle on a lower branch so she could get a better angle to see who was approaching, when the thick sole of her combat boot slipped on a particularly wet piece of mossy branch. The momentum of losing her footing pulled the rest of the girl down right along with the boot, leaving Robin tumbling through the tree, bouncing off a multitude of branches (with a whole lot of cursing that would for sure get her mouth washed out with soap at home...) until she was able to grasp a thick branch, wrapping her arms around the lifeline and holding on for dear life. Using all of her strength, Robin pulled her feet up to join the rest of her body and lay on her stomach, horizontally on the branch with her cheek pressed to the rough wood.
Robin, remembering that a person had originally been walking by, slowly looked down, the ground being much closer now that she was on a lower branch, and made eye contact with one of the most beautiful girls she had ever seen. The girl had curly blonde ringlets framing her face - her face with the most dazzling pair of blue eyes that Robin had ever seen. Completely taken off guard, Robin let out a slight sound resembling a choke, reverberating from her chest and reminding her of the sound a crowing bird would make if cut off mid-squawk. And then Robin tumbled to the ground fully, landing in the pine needle littered grass with a solid "Ooph." Robin moaned, immediately curling up into a ball and covering her face with her arms, refusing to get up from the soft bed nature had so kindly tossed her into.
Robin, physically, was perfectly fine. She would wake up with plenty of bruises the next day and a few overextended muscles. It was not her body that she was worried about - dear gods, had she truly just fallen out of a tree in front of... in front of this... Wait, Robin thought. Who was that?
Robin popped one eye open, seeing if the blonde girl was looking her way, and when Robin confirmed that yes, the girl had indeed seen everything, she quickly shut her eye again and said, "You didn't see anything." Her voice was flat and empty, but not unkind. Yes, Robin thought. Yes, denial. That might just work. At least until I know who she is.

Walking was her favorite activity. She didn't know why, but she enjoyed it more than anything else. Nature, the colors, the sounds, the weather—everything helped her disconnect from any problems and simply enjoy herself. And she really needed that. Her mind and heart were going through a great jumble of emotions that she couldn't control even if she wanted to.
Like many of her walks, she didn't have a specific destination; her idea was simply to keep walking until she found something that caught her attention. Her journey had reminded her of all the people she had met over time, from the courtyard to the great lake. Saunders, Ira, Ruth, Kostas, Harvey, Edwin, Rafal. Some were good friends, others were just acquaintances; each encounter had had its special moment, or at least most of them. It sometimes surprised her how people could appear or reappear in her life, and while she appreciated many people, she had only managed to truly open up to a few. She wasn't closed off; people just didn't ask her too much about her life. And that was okay. She was in the midst of growing up; whatever she was at that moment would likely change the next, even if she didn't try. Thanks to Graci, she understood that the best thing she could do was at least know who she was at that moment. Not to spend time talking about herself with others; that was something private to her, something she might share with others at some point. She knew what she didn't want to be; she didn't want to be just a pretty face. So that was her goal. To learn as many skills as she could over the years. And her grandmother was going to take care of that; she'd already started, and that overwhelmed her. The arrival of the holidays overwhelmed her. For the next seven years, she would spend summer vacation with her, learning all sorts of (boring) things to become a proper little woman. Despite being against many of her lessons, some were more fruitful, and others she could choose, so at the end of the day, it wasn't so burdensome. She already had a list of the things she wanted to learn. First of all, archery. She thought it would be cool to come back from vacation and be able to boast about her perfect shot. Second, she wanted to learn how to make more friends; why not? And third, she wanted to learn how to help people, so she'd thought about something related to makeup or hairstyling; many people were talking while being groomed, and in her mind, it made sense.
All her thoughts stopped when she felt a twig fall on her head. As soon as she put her hand to her hair, she looked up, searching for the reason. The last thing Stelle would have imagined was that the twig had come to her because of someone else. She kept her gaze on that girl for a few minutes before moving to the opposite tree to lean against it and observe what she was doing. The girl was skilled; that was a fact. Where had she learned that from? Although her impression was short-lived because of a bunch of swear words she wasn't allowed to say. She squeezed her eyes shut, pitying that blow, opening them only when she heard the thud of the ground. His blue eyes, as curious as an owl, remained focused on the girl, waiting for a word or a moan to ask if she was okay.
Although the tree climber's response seemed a bit abrupt, he decided not to take it personally. He simply nodded, remaining silent for a moment. —Actually, I didn't see anything; I closed my eyes to keep you from feeling embarrassed. Sometimes it's easier to receive help like this—. he said with sincerity as pure as water. He knelt beside her and tilted his head to smile softly before adding, —I'm Stelle, and you?—.

Robin remained stationary, hoping with every part of her being that the pretty girl would continue on her way. Silently focusing on leveling out her breathing, Robin slowly uncurled her body and sat on the ground, legs splayed out and a hand on her forehead, rubbing a spot that took a nasty whack from one of the branches that had whipped her face as she fell. Robin took her time to observe her new acquaintance - Stelle, she had said- as she knelt beside her in the grass. The girl wore a bright yellow dress with white trimmings that resembled an outfit that Robin's sister Samantha had on her porcelain dolls back at home. It was a stark contrast to Robin's preferred color scheme, which was primarily black, brown, and blue. If only because the girl piqued Robin's interest, she finally lifted her eyes to meet the girl levelly and immediately found herself drawn to her.
There was something about Stelle that made Robin instantly want to smile and greet the girl as if they were long-time friends. It was odd - usually, Robin was the kind to turn away from strangers offering help, but something about this girl seemed familiar and comforting. The warm sensation enveloped her like a blanket; Robin didn't even question why the girl had knelt beside her, offering a kind smile and an introduction, allowing her ease with people to shine on display. She had nearly found herself smiling in return and accepting the help offered but had quickly caught herself at the last minute. Robin blinked, attempting to clear her brain and assess her situation before making any rash decisions. Her fingers still rubbed away at the sore spot on her head, a disturbing ache slowly building in her chest. The ache wasn't from pain from falling, no. It wasn't even from the shame of tumbling so roughly in front of this girl. The ache came from this feeling of... familiarity she felt for the girl. The way the girl made her want to... trust.
Robin shivered, shoving the thought down as far as possible, and decided to respond.
"Robin." She answered curtly, spitting out her name as if it were a defense rather than an introduction. Words a bit muddled from her crying session, Robin cleared her throat, the thick Welsh accent a little easier to understand. Robin narrowed her eyes at the girl in suspicion. "You know I saw you. Your eyes were open."
Sure, calling out the lie the girl had offered as a kindness was foolish, but Robin was feeling flustered and embarrassed. Any way to gain control of the situation again felt necessary. Besides, every instinct in Robin's body was telling her that this girl was kind, and Robin didn't want to entertain that thought whatsoever. Robin never just assumed people could be good. Something was wrong.
Robin pushed off the ground, refusing help, ultimately not allowing for any other weaknesses to show. Wiping off her school robes, she noticed a small tear on the hemming of her left sleeve. Reaching for her wand in her thick black combat boots, Robin flicked her wand toward her damaged sleeve, muttering the incantation to the mending charm. "Reparo." When her sleeve was back to normal, she tucked the wand back in her boot and returned her attention Stelle, giving the girl a wide berth.
"So... what's your deal?" Robin asked, trying to gauge the girl's energy better. Not just her physical energy; there was something about the girl that Robin couldn't quite put her finger on. She didn't trust the feeling, whatever it was. But she also couldn't help but feel... intrigued. Robin decided to do what she did best. Unsettle. "You know I could've just broken my neck, right?" She said with a straight face and blunt voice, searching the girl for any sort of reaction that would tell her more about this odd feeling buzzing at the edge of her thoughts. "What would you have done then, hm? Drag my corpse back to the castle, maybe? Call for help?" A smirk grew on her face as her naturally sarcastic-filled voice ebbed out, filling her with the comfort of controlling the conversation. "Leave me here?"

Stelle blinked slowly as Robin spoke, not because she struggled to understand his words, but because she was trying to process everything at once: the way she'd fallen, the tension she was carrying, and that mix of sarcasm and distrust she hurled at her as if it were her only form of communication. And while it bothered her when people were rude, she had a quiet patience that not many knew. She didn't move from where she was, not when Robin refused her help, nor when he repaired her sleeve with that quick, almost mechanical gesture. Instead, she leaned against the nearest tree, barely supporting her head, watching her. Stelle's gaze wasn't condescending or curious, nor was it that warm, serene look, like someone watching a storm knowing it would pass.
—I probably would have gone to get help—. she replied, still calm. —I'm not very good at dragging corpses—.
There wasn't a hint of irony in her voice, just a plain, honest answer, as clear as the morning light falls on a greenhouse. She took a second before continuing. She knew Robin was looking for a reaction. Stelle wasn't fragile. But she wasn't stone either.
—Or perhaps I would have gone my own way—. she added, with a small, faint smile, as if that lie had already dissolved into the air, weightless. —But my conscience would never allow it—.
They placed their hands in their laps, and they lowered their gaze for a moment, just long enough to let the silence do its part. Sometimes silence spoke louder than words. In the gardens, Stelle had learned to understand the way plants waited. The way water fell unhurriedly. She could apply that to people as well. I looked at Robin again. Not at his boots, or his wand, or his patched sleeve, but directly into his eyes. At that sharp, distrustful gaze.
—What happened to me...?—. she repeated the question thoughtfully. —I guess nothing in particular. I was just walking. I like to walk around here when no one's around. The castle is too noisy sometimes. I spend a lot of time here, in fact, it seems strange I hadn't seen you before—.
It was true. She had no specific reason to be there, right then and there. Or maybe she was, but it was more instinct than logic. As if something had led her toward Robin's downfall, without knowing that's where it would end, even if she didn't like his presence.
—You can keep treating me like you expect me to be horrible to you. Don't bother me. Sometimes it's easier that way. I'll just stay for a while, if you don't mind, and then I'll leave—.
She stood up slowly, barely dusting off her yellow dress, and took a couple of steps toward a clearing where light filtered through the branches. She sat down on the grass, crossing her legs. Not too close. Not too far. Just far enough to stay if Robin wanted to talk, or to disappear if not. Stelle looked up for a moment, following the flight of a butterfly as it danced through the sunlight. Then, without looking directly at Robin, she murmured, —Though the woods have no owner, I can stay if I choose—. She paused briefly, as if unsure why she was telling this. —And you seem very angry with me, and we've never met. So I won't leave until I know why—. she finished. And there she stayed.

ooc// thanks for ur patience with me!!"I probably would have gone to get help," the girl replied without a hint of a reaction to Robin's disappointment. "I'm not very good at dragging corpses."
At that, Robin couldn't help but be amused. The thought of the girl in her delicate yellow doll's dress dragging Robin's corpse across the Hogwarts grounds proved incredibly amusing. Robin imagined her twisted and broken body on the ground, neck bent, and a pool of red falling from her mouth. Robin wondered if her blood would smear across Stelle's soft yellow dress as she attempted to drag her lifeless body to the school. The thought of her pain destroying something so pretty shouldn't have brought as much joy to her as it did. A smirk grew at the thought, despite her stomach churning from the continued conversation.
"Or perhaps I would have gone my own way," Stelle added, making more sense to Robin. That's almost certainly what Robin would have done, assuming she hadn't been caught. One student's pain wasn't her issue to deal with. It wouldn't have been a question if it were one of her few friends who had needed her help. She'd have all but apparated the student to the infirmary. But someone she didn't know? Robin doubted she would've given them a second glance - if only to laugh. "But my conscience would never allow it."
Robin took a moment to think. Stelle was certainly making her look bad in the grand scheme of things. This girl was most definitely acting kindly. Something - something just wasn't right. Robin had embarrassed herself to no end in front of this girl. First, she'd witnessed Robin falling out of a tree, only for Robin to somewhat threaten the girl. Then she'd insulted the girl after she had tried to help her to her feet and offer her an out. Then Robin had called her out for simply going along with what Robin suggested. She knew that she was acting irrationally then. It almost felt like she was actively fighting against the feeling of being drawn in by this girl. The good Samaritan act was far too simple for her - there had to be a reason for this gorgeous girl's allure to be so potent...
Allure.
The word prickled across the back of Robin's neck, causing her body to tremble with the anticipation of the truth.
Allure... Golden hair. Moon-bright skin. Undeniably attractive.
Like.... a....
Robin's heart dropped to her stomach, and she squawked, hand leaning against a tree for support. She held Stelle in her gaze as she said something-something Robin couldn't hear because she was breathing so hard. Mouth as dry as sandpaper, Robin attempted to say the word that came to her mind-the word that she now had no doubt the girl in front of her was.
Veela.
"You-you-y-" Robin stuttered, unable to form a sentence. Her fist clenched tight around her wand, somehow in her hand and by her side, without her realizing it.
"You're a veela!" She croaked, horrified. She wasn't quite sure how she was supposed to be feeling. For the entirety of her first year, Robin has accused almost every unnaturally pretty person who attended Hogwarts of being a veela. She had read about the influence that their kind can have on people. As someone who had only recently discovered the magical world, magic in general, with a wand, was already difficult enough for her to comprehend. Mind games? The ability to affect her desires? Her choices? Was her autonomy itself always in question while she lived amongst her kind?
Robin was completely frozen - unable to decide her next move without more information. This girl certainly seemed kind... How could she even trust her own mind? Robin's breath began to pick up a little faster.
"Can you... I don't know... turn it off?" Robin asked snarkily, a grimace on her face. Her intuition told her to flee while her heart told her to move closer... to befriend this girl. Robin was at war with herself. What was she to do? "Stop playing fucking mind games with me, I swear to god I'll hex you." Robin glowered, her indecision warping to anger. "I'm not some puppet!" She yelled, quite a bit louder than she intended. Robin stood there - staring at Stelle, lost in her ignorance and hating every moment of it.

The silence that followed Robin's shout expanded like an invisible crack, opening a path between the trees. The forest, which until then had breathed with a serene murmur, seemed to hold its breath, expectant. Stelle remained motionless, as if her body did not belong to her. The air grew thicker, and the insects stopped singing. In some corner, a leaf fell, slow, suspended, and the sound seemed to resonate like a distant echo of something that had just broken.
—Veela—.
The word resonated within her with the weight of a secret she had never asked to bear. It was as if the name of her blood rose in the middle of that clearing, stripping her bare before a truth she had not spoken. It wasn't the first time someone had said it—nor would it be the last—but on Robin's lips it sounded different. There was no fascination or curiosity in his voice, but fear. That ancient, almost superstitious fear that wizards reserved for anything they didn't fully understand. Stelle breathed slowly. She could feel Robin's pulse, rapid, irregular, even though he was only a few feet away. It was a vibration in the air, a discordant note that disturbed the invisible balance around her. The wand in the other's hand flickered faintly, trembling under the impulse of an emotion that the blonde couldn't tell if it was rage or terror.
—I'm not doing anything...—. she murmured, her voice trembling slightly, as if she feared the sound might cause a new wound.
But Robin didn't listen. She demanded that she "turn it off." That pierced her with a mixture of sadness and bewilderment. Turn off what? Her heritage, her very being? Stelle looked down, watching how her hands—the same ones that wove mint flowers to decorate her grandmother's window, the same ones that held books and sweets in the Great Hall—suddenly seemed suspicious. Her heart pounded in her chest with an uneven force, a beat that was no longer entirely her own. Her magic, that involuntary, living part that sometimes burst from her like a perfume, now seemed a crime. She could feel it moving between their bodies, subtle as the wind, charged with something she had never fully mastered. Robin screamed. She accused her of mind games, of being an invisible puppeteer. Stelle took a step back, not out of fear of the wand, but of the pain she heard in his voice. There was an edge of truth in his words: she hated that effect. There was no greater condemnation than inspiring fear without having done anything to deserve it.
—I don't want to play with you—. she said finally, with a calm that cracked at the edges. —I don't know how to do it... or how to avoid it—.
Her voice faded among the trees. The setting sun dyed her hair an old, almost sad gold. In that instant, Stelle felt half child, half girl; a shadow born of beauty and guilt. She looked at her. Robin stood rigid, confused, her wand raised, her soul trembling. The afternoon light filtered between them, golden, suspended like the weather before a storm.
And in that instant, Stelle understood that no matter how hard she tried to look ordinary, there would always be someone who would see in her not a girl, but a danger. A mirage that could never completely dissipate. So she stood there, still, while the forest, little by little, began to breathe again.
—Stop pointing that at me—. she murmured softly, even with a slight note of annoyance, contrasting with her natural kindness.—I'm not doing anything, I can't control it, I mean it—.ABILITIES: Part-Veela

ooc// No worries!! I love your writing so much – no pressure on timeShe hadn't even realized that she'd drawn her wand.
Stelle's face had immediately fallen, and she'd taken a step back in response to Robin's shouting. It was as if Robin had actually hexed the girl, leaving her only able to respond in broken fragments. Each sentence she stammered out in defense of herself poked at a part of Robin's heart that she didn't want to allow out in the open. The two girls stood opposite one another – Robin, her wand raised slightly to point at Stelle, and Stelle – this kindhearted, wholesome girl who had only offered to help her looked absolutely broken. Broken by Robin.
"I'm not doing anything, I can't control it, I mean it-" Stelle started, clearly in a state of distress. A state of distress that Robin had caused. Stelle's voice broke through the wall she was holding up between them like a battering ram, suddenly causing all of her defenses to crumble to the ground in a stream of absolute shame.
Shame. Oh, Robin had definitely been in this position before. The position where people point their oh-so judgmental fingers at you and claim to the world that you are different. That you don't deserve to be loved or to have and hold meaningful relationships. She had been on the other end, leaving her with a need for solitude and an overwhelming fear of getting close to her peers. A mirror could have been positioned directly between them, showing her with her wand pointed, the intense fear flashing across her face, disguised as disgust and anger, and she would have hated herself. She hated people who reacted with violence and prejudice to things that they didn't know. And there she was – doing precisely that. How humiliating.
She lowered her wand, taking a step back and gasping as the realization hit her. Just because she had been in a vulnerable position – crying, falling, feeling lured... did not give her the right to be so awful to this person who had only offered a thoughtful hand. The word shame echoed throughout her head, causing her to furrow her eyebrows and chew on her lip in desperation.
"I'm sorry." She spat out aggressively after a moment of hesitation, her wand lowering and returning to her boot. "I'm so sorry, I-" she what? She didn't even know what she could say to begin to heal the wound she had obviously struck into this girl. A wound that was still healing in herself, despite it all.
"It's not you," Robin expressed, finally gathering the courage to actually speak. She wanted to explain herself to this girl. To Stelle. "I promise it's not you." She looked down, suddenly out of energy, and flopped back down to sit in the grass, opting to rest on the ground to make herself seem less threatening. The allure that Robin had associated so strongly with lack of consent was still there – only now that she was aware of it, cognizant enough to remember that it wasn't some siren luring her in for melevolent reasons– it wasn't nearly as difficult to ignore as she thought in her deteriorated state.
Robin wracked her brain for any information she could remember regarding Hogwarts and other species... and she remembered a particular line in one of her textbooks explaining that other breeds, such as Veela and Goblins, had different types of magic running through their systems. If the girl were a true Veela, the kind that you probably should be a bit wary of, then she wouldn't be allowed to be a student at Hogwarts. This led Robin to the obvious conclusion that Stelle was only part-veela, and that the allure Robin felt was only a fragment of what a true Veela could make her feel. Settling herself in knowledge and facts, Robin raised her eyes to look at the girl in her face.
"Can we start over, please? You were being so nice and I..." She swallowed, struggling against the knot in her throat. "I was so mean. I'm sorry." She said once more. And God forbid! God forbid, Robin felt tears forming in her eyes once more as the shame washed over and through her entire body as she listened to Stelle's uneven breathing cut through the silence.
