Aurette walked onto the expansive grounds of Hogwarts, a feeling of subdued happiness welling up inside of her. The sun, low in the sky, stretched out long, golden shadows across the neat lawns, and a soft breeze, scented lightly with pine and damp ground, whipped around her, stirring the hem of her robes. She watched as her eyes followed the broad expanse of the Great Lake, its surface glinting like a thousand scattered diamonds.

There, in the dark, dark water, the fabled Giant Squid was performing for a select cluster of students from nearby, its gargantuan tentacles elegantly extending and curving, weaving hypnotic pathways through the water. A small, gentle laugh bubbled up from Aurette's mouth at the sight, a comfortable awe at the enchanted world about her.

Coming across a very appealing clump of soft, emerald green grass some distance from the small group, Aurette hunched down comfortably. With conscious deliberateness, she proceeded to unload her satchel, taking out a haphazard stack of dog-eared textbooks, a roll of stiff parchment, and a set of well-sharpened quills. To any one who might have been passing by, it might have seemed as if the studious young Hufflepuff was getting ready for an afternoon of intense studying. But a mischievous glint in her emerald green eyes suggested otherwise.

In reality, the books were props, a means of fitting in with the studious environment which frequently pervaded the grounds, particularly as finals loomed on the horizon for upperclassmen. Aurette's actual mission was the piece of parchment and the delicate-tipped quill in her hand. Her brain, a colorful canvas of imaginative thought, was at present entranced by the regal beast in the lake and the quaint scenery extending about it.

While her heart was with the rich colors and thick textures of oil paint, Aurette recognized that inspiration was liable to strike at any time, in the most unexpected guise. And when it did, the brush of an artist's hand had simply to record it, however much it meant dipping into the fluid lines of a quill on parchment.

The Great Squid, with its sinuous movements and impenetrable depths, was a compelling model. With swift, assured lines, she defined its vast shape, the sweep of its tentacles, and the puzzled faces of the students gazing on shore.

While her quill flew across the parchment, so too was the landscape around her coming alive. The tall outline of Hogwarts Castle on the horizon, its old stones bathed in the golden light of the afternoon sun, the soft roll of the hills surrounding it, and how the sun filtered through the leaves of the old trees that rimmed the lake – all were meticulously observed and transformed onto delicate lines and shading.

Lost in her work of art, Aurette heeded little the passing students' occasional greetings or the remote shouts of laughter and conversation. Her universe had narrowed to the limits of her parchment, the nib of her quill, and the entrancing vista before her. In her imagination, she could already see how she would render this outline later as a full oil painting, perhaps adding on layers of blues and greens to capture the lake's depth, and subtle suggestions of movement to bring the Giant Squid to life in color.

For Aurette, these peaceful moments of observation and creation were as essential as any lesson in Charms or Potions. They were a means by which she could tap into the magic of the world in her own special way, to convey the beauty she saw in terms she could understand and reproduce. And who's to say, maybe one day her artwork of the Great Lake and its mysterious occupant would hang in the walls of Hogwarts, reminders of the sharp eye and creative heart of a young Hufflepuff with a hidden passion.
