First Time for Everything
"Promise you'll write?" Rowan had been hanging off of Eli's arm the entire way to King's Cross Station, reluctant to let go of his older sister. "You can't lie to me. It's not fair if you lie to me."
Eli could only give a chuckle at her little brother's antics though she couldn't help but be distracted by the organized chaos around them. To her left someone's owl screeched in loud indignation from it's cage; to her right someone hurried past, muttering something about being late. She'd never had the opportunity to visit platform 9 3/4 before though she'd often had her father tell her stories about what it would be like. The train, the castle, everything.
"Of course I'm going to write. You. Dad. Mum. As often as I can." She didn't want to make any silly promises or anything like that. She couldn't say she was going to write every day because if her father's stories meant anything at all, she was going to be very busy. "I'll tell you about everything so you know what to expect in a couple of years."
"I wish I could go now," Rowan's voice caught on a whine and she just gave him a tight squeeze, pulling him into her side for a moment. She was going to miss him, she couldn't lie about that. But she was oh so excited to get to experience Hogwarts for herself too.
"You didn't forget anything?" her mother checked in as her father lifted her trunk on board the train for her. "Extra socks? Your new hat? Those snacks I packed you for the trip?" Eli subjected herself to the fussing only because she knew it would be months before she would see her mother again. Never having gone to Hogwarts herself- or any wizarding school for that matter- Leota Goldhorn had her apprehensions about the whole thing at times but there was still a bright gleam of pride in her eyes as she saw her eldest off to school.
"Check, check and check. I'm going to be okay, mum. You don't have to worry." But she stepped into her arms all the same, happy for the hug. And then she did the same for her father, squeezing him tight before she stepped back.
There were no sad farewells to be had. She climbed her way onto the train as well, finding a compartment and pushing herself to the window so she could wave to her family as the train eventually chugged its way out of the station.
And just like that, she was on her own.
But it was just the first step in her new adventure.
