Graci had always liked poetry. She was a lover of all pretty things as well as words, so it made sense.

She also like the outdoors, a place that gave her inspiration. A beautiful sky, wheter clear or cloudy, a nice breeze, bright green grass, flourishing trees, budding flowers. The works.

Ah, if only it could be so beautiful every day.

Graci sat underneath a tree, journal open, red gel pen in hand, and wet wipes so her hand doesn't stain. She was usually one for more free verse poetry so she often switched lines.

I feel cool,
in these dimming rays of sunlight,
In this eternal sunset,
In this moment that ends,
all too soon.
It is but a brief eternity,
Forever with an ending,
A moment nothing can contain,
Not pictures,
Not memories.
It is purely a moment,
An experience,
A life I want to live forever.
But alas,
It will leave,
It will end,
But for now,
I savor,
I feel,
I remember,
In these dimming rays of sunlight.

It wasn't her best, it might not even have been poetry, but it perfectly encapsulated her feelings.

She looked back, at one of her older poems, it wasn't good by any means, but she felt it could have deeper meaning if she really thought about it. 'Like I've got somebody to please', one of the lines read.

It was talking about how sometimes we feel pressure to please people or feel like something is expected of us when, in reality, it's our own doing.

Graci felt as though she was getting more philosophical as the days went by, but it was probably her imagination acting up. She was the least serious person she knew.

It was a beautiful spring day, and Rafal had come out to the Hogwarts Grounds for a bit of outdoor studying. He’d had a short breakfast moments prior, and satchel slung over his shoulder, was now ready for - a date with knowledge! Rafal grimaced inwardly. What was that? Nobody says that.

A light breeze caressed his face as the Slytherin looked around for a nice spot in the shade. Sure, everything was all good now, but in a few hours it would be midday, and Rafal knew from personal experience that the sun would be ruthlesss. Especially since for whatever reason, he seemed to be especially susceptible to the rays.

Suddenly, something caught his eye. Beneath one of the many oaks adorning the area was a small figure with wavy brown hair, bent over and seemingly focused on an object in their lap. Then the person raised their head slightly so that Rafal could see their face, and it came to him in a flash. Graci the candle maker!

Study session all but forgotten, the first year immediately headed over towards the girl eagerly. Raising a hand in greeting as he approached, Rafal couldn’t help but grin wide. "Hey, Graci!" he called enthusiastically. "How ya doing?!"

Graci was so preoccupied in her thoughts that she didn't even notice when footsteps were coming toward her. She only noticed when she heard the 'Hey Graci! How ya doing?' from her side. She was shocked, but she often found herself being approached when zoned out so she was used to this.

"Oh! Hi Rafal, I'm doing really good, it's quite beautiful outside today to I thought I'd sit out here and get some writing done. How are you?"

It really was beautiful when she looked around her. What might've seemed trivial to everyone else was most appreciated in her eyes. She loved the little things.

It had been a while since she'd last seen Rafal in the potions classroom. It was nice to see him again. She'd rarely seen people more than three times here. Even then, it was usually just 'Oh, so nice to see you again, how have you been doing? Much like this encounter.

She hadn't really made any solid 'friendships' because she couldn't connect as easily with people here for some odd reason. And there were more shy people, so that takes even more time to build up a connection.

I miss Lindin and Makayli. I didn't have to worry about first impressions with them. Not that I actually worry about first impressions here, I just do whatever and hope they aren't the judgy kind of shy person. Or even a not shy judgy person. Judgy people in general just kill the mood.

Rafal stops by the oak and settles himself into a spot next to Graci. He does not think she minds, and he would immediately move if discomfort were expressed. "I’m good, thanks. Was just planning to do some studying, but we can catch up first!" He smiles at Graci, then twists and carefully arranges his satchel by the side of the tree before turning back towards the Gryffindor. He cautiously peeks over her shoulder at the hidden contents in her lap.

It is a journal, words bleeding into the page in an orderly line-by-line fashion - this must be the writing Graci is referring to. His eyes scan the pages rapidly. "Graci," he says haltingly. "Are you a poet?"

The first year truthfully does not know how he feels about that. Rafal frankly does not pay much heed toward the arts himself, music, painting, ballads and the such. His upbringing has made it so the Slytherin's nature is much more pragmatic than most, and while the more creative crafts no doubt hold a certain beauty and allure, it is not one which Rafal has ever appreciated in the fullest.

But - "You are really quite good," Rafal notes, and it is perhaps unexpected. Not that an eleven-year old cannot hold a talent with a quill, and Graci did previously show an artistic flair, with the candle-making and all — On second thoughts, perhaps it is not so surprising after all.

Graci appreciated the company, she hadn't had more than a small exchange between people in a while.

"Well, I'm loath to keep you from your studies, but I'll gladly talk to you."

Then he brought up the poetry. Graci couldn't get a good read on how he felt on the subject. His voice was halting and she didn't want to give a wrong answer.

"Well, not exactly. I mean, I write the occasional free verse but I'm never quite sure if it's actually poetry or just weirdly placed words on paper. That's everything actually. Just staining tree pulp with wacky symbols. Anyway, sorry for the tangent, but no, I would not consider myself a poet."

Then he complimented her poetry, a piece which she considered one of her worst, at that. "Oh, thank you, you're too kind."

Graci didn't know if he was just being nice or actually meant it. Maybe he was secretly a hater of all things artsy, though he didn't seem to have a problem with the candles. Oh! That reminds me, I should probably seek him out sometime and give him that candle. or I should just tote it around with me everywhere on the off chance that I run into him.

Graci downplayed herself, and it was disheartening to see. Rafal may not be the biggest fan of the creative arts, but he couldn’t let a talented friend dismiss such a gift! Not on his watch! "Oh, come on!" He scooted closer to her, smiling apprehensively. "Don’t sell yourself short. This is brilliant, and you know it."

Rafal certainly did. He maybe didn't understand fully, but he felt it all the same. On the notebook, the words of the poem seemed to melt into the page, into the surroundings and drift into his being. The verses gave the Slytherin such a strangely melancholic sense, and it was not entirely unpleasant, but it was one Rafal was unaccustomed to, and he did not care too much for those as a rule.

He blinked and snapped out of the daze he hadn’t even realized he was in. Glancing over to Graci uneasily, Rafal hoped she hadn’t noticed. He did not want to give the impression of being one to constantly have their head in the clouds, so to speak.

Leaning slightly back with a hand braced against the grass, Rafal considered the girl thoughtfully. "Graci, if you don’t mind me asking - How do you come up with these things? What’s your… writing process?" He inquired. "Do you have one?"

Graci really thought he was giving her too much praise, but there's a point where you just don't argue anymore. As for her writing process... that is a thing much more difficult to explain.

"Well, it's not so much of a process as it is inspiration striking three to five times a year. Once I even wrote one about the beginning of fall in the middle of August. It was pretty wacky. But when inspiration strikes you gotta use it. Sometimes I have a theme. Most often said theme is the 'feeling that you nave have enough time to live' or the sadness that we can never quite remember experiences."

She thought on it a bit more, "That's it, really, but I've never really thought of myself to have a writing 'process' it's more, what part on me wants to be heard in the prettiest way I know how?"

Graci's hoped that made sense. Sometimes when she talked it sounded like the ravings of a lunatic when, in her head, it came out perfectly fine and sensible. No one wants to sound like a raving lunatic in front of an almost-friend. That is, unless said almost-friend is a raving lunatic as well, but Graci thought Rafal to be one of the more sensible people she knew.
