It was a warm dusk in July, the air still, full of silence aside from the squeak of the occasional cricket or a yelp of excitement from Emalyn Waverly's younger brother Lewis Waverly. 10-year old Emmy kept on fumbling the letter from Hogwarts in her hands, sitting on the brick stairs that led up to their cozy Edwardian house in London. She'd read it a plentiful amount of times, with mixed feelings about going to the magical school for witches and wizards. The letter was outlined with a golden border, its bright color reflecting off the setting sun. Lewis was toying with a red scooter he had found from somewhere. It was a Muggle scooter, and Lewis found great joy in playing with it. Emmy glanced up from the letter to watch him, as she had been instructed to do so by her parents.

Being left home alone wasn't a fun activity. All of Emmy and Lewis' friends were off on some form of vacation. The Waverly's could have gone somewhere too, but the parents seemed to be much more interested in their jobs. Obviously, they were at their "important" jobs. It was referred to as a "silly vacation," as Emmy clearly recalled her mother, Julie Waverly say to her.

Mom, Kate's going to that Quidditch game, how come we can't go? Emmy had asked a few days ago.

Yeah! And so is Joshua! Lewis piped up.

Children. There is much more to life than...useless, silly vacations. Work hard, and you will see the final result. Julie had replied, her graying hairs visible in the dim light of the dining room. Emmy and Lewis had both exchanged dark looks at this.

Emmy rested her chin on her legs, feeling sickened just at the memory of it. Oh, how she'd always wanted to see a game of Quidditch, or maybe even just to touch a Quaffle. Or a Snitch. Or anything. To touch a broomstick would be the ultimate dream. Stuck in her daydreams, Emmy was jolted out of her thoughts to Lewis' high voice saying, "Em, look at me!"

Looking up, Lewis was balancing on top of the scooter handles with his legs. She didn't know what this scooter was used for, but it was certainly not for that dangerous reason.

"LEWIS. GET DOWN. THAT DOESN'T LOOK SAFE," Emmy roared, her heart beating fast.

"Why? It's fun," Lewis replied with a giggle.

"Lewis, LISTEN TO ME."

Ignoring her, Lewis rolled down the street, turning the bend of the corner. Emmy chased after him as he used his weight to push the scooter, which almost seemed impossible, his stubby legs moving with might. She was surprised at how well he was balancing, but this wasn't the best thought to have at the moment.

Emmy's heart pounded even faster when he started rolling toward a hill, where it was a very steep slope down to Main Street.

"Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" Lewis shrieked with nothing but pure excitement.

"LEWIS!" Emmy screamed after him, running past other cloaked figures, probably looking like a lunatic.

Lewis reached the end of Main Street faster than she did, or could. Emmy sprinted after him, and there was a black, metal gate at the end of Main Street. There was no friction to stop the scooter's gaining acceleration. Lewis' eyes widened as he started to realize what was about to happen.
