Breathing in the earth and the rich fresh air of the Scottish Highlands, Eira's hyperaware of the cold sweat beading from her forehead as well as her palms.

Her first flying lesson ended in such a spectacular failure that she was the only one who was unable to call her broomstick for almost half an hour, instead getting thwacked on the nose multiple times. She never deluded herself into being a broom racer or, Merlin forbid, a Quidditch player, but she should at least be able to hover a couple of centimeters from the ground.

Taking another deep breath, Eira tied her long, dark brown hair into a pair of pigtails and grasped the school broom. Planting her feet firmly on the ground, she let the broom levitate to her exact height and mounted the broom.

Well, she tried to.

As soon as she swung her leg over it, the broomstick nearly bucked her off until she forced it to let her sit properly, making her wish she can use the Sticking Charm so that the infernal thing would just let her ride it.

'You can do this,' Eira thought to herself, 'If you can manage to cast Incendio and Flipendo perfectly on the first try- then riding a broomstick should be as easy as catching a flobberworm'

The broom jerked for a bit before it finally let her guide it up to the skies, not too far from the ground that it would break a bone if she fell, but not too close that it looked like she was using a toy broom for younger children. At least if she got into an accident, her dignity would remain intact.

The broomstick flying (hovering, really) felt a bit freeing. She can see the appeal of flying for others, though she felt more secure with her feet feeling the floor, but the gentle breeze that swept through the grounds seemed to soothe some of her fears.

Until the broomstick started to buck-

"Don't you dare," Eira warned, but her threat remained incomplete as the broom suddenly sped up through the grounds, narrowly missing the trees.

Finally, it took a sharp dive down, making the Slytherin scream with fright before it successfully threw her off, mercifully just a scant millimeters from the ground. She tumbled like a gobstone before she was left lying on her back and staring up at the sunny sky, like the amazing weather was mocking her.

"... I hate brooms" she seethed.

Avery gripped her new Nimbus 1001 in her hands as she headed towards where her flying class normally was. She knew the Quidditch Pitch would be busy since the final match of the season was coming up sooner rather than later, so she decided to just do some simple flying for once in order to give herself a break and relax her nerves.

Avery's golden and red Quidditch robes flowed gracefully in the wind as she walked to her Flying class. It was a beautiful and sunny day with a light breeze blowing. Perfect weather to fly leisurely in. She couldn't wait!

That's when Avery heard a scream coming from the field. She quickly began to run to where she had heard the scream and was surprised to find a slytherin girl on the ground with a school broom nearby. Avery smiled to herself as she remembered the many times she had fallen off her school broom even though she had been riding brooms her entire life. It was just a part of broom riding.

Avery walked over to the girl with her own broom still in her hand. "Are you okay? I heard you screaming." Avery commented to the girl as she held out one of her hands in order to help the girl up from the ground.

"Are you okay? I heard you screaming."

Eira squeaked as she heard a voice above her and blinked owlishly as a hand shot out to assist her.

"Oh," she breathed out, hesitating at first, but ultimately accepted the preferred hand that helped her sit up. She studied the girl in front of her, the red and gold Quidditch uniform already clued her in that she was from Gryffindor, and in her gloved hand was a dark broomstick that looked menacing in Eira's eyes.

Then again, the charmed broom that was enchanted to clean in the manor was foreboding as well, as it didn't hesitate to chase her around when she accidentally left a trail of mud from the entrance to the carpeted sitting area when she was six.

Grandfather Niclas' portrait relished in retelling that story to guests every time.

"I apologize for creating a scene," Eira said as she slowly stood up, wincing at the thought of possible grass stains on her clothes. "I'm not one for flying. Well, broomstick flying to be exact."

As if to emphasize her meaning, she shot a disapproving look at the school broom that looked so innocent on the grass.

Sensing that the girl's hazel gaze was still on her, Eira belatedly remembered her manners and quickly straightened her clothes,

"Oh, where are my manners- My name is Eira Cravensworth," she said, giving the Gryffindor a quick curtsy, "I was trying to at least hover above the ground for more than a minute but it seems that the brooms have some sort of vendetta against me."

Hopefully, it came off as a joke. Circe knows that she didn't need any more schoolmates thinking she had gone 'round the bend and had her hauled to Janus Thickey Ward at St. Mungo's to have her own mum be the attending Healer.

Giving a subtle look at the girl's wardrobe, "I may as well be the only student who can't properly fly with a broom. You must be awfully skilled, not only being able to fly but part of the Quidditch team as well!" she exclaimed with admiration coloring her words.

What luck it must be for her to be found by a Quidditch player! And how embarrassing for Eira to be seen (and heard) as she failed, yet again, to control her broom.

Avery smiled at the flustered girl. She understood completely how hard it was to gain your bearings after a fall. Even if it wasn't a bad fall. She had had her fair share of falls this past year and had learned her lesson many times that she couldn't fly without paying attention to what she was doing.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Avery. Avery Gray, and well, I guess you could say I'm a decent broom flyer, but I've had my fair share of falls this year. Some better than others actually." Avery laughed after she introduced herself.

Avery glanced around and noticed that the area where they were was empty of all other students. Perfect. Maybe she could show the girl the ropes of broom riding? If she wanted, of course.

"Hey. If you want some tips on how to ride a broom, I could teach you, if you want. Once you get the hang of it, it gets a lot easier to handle the broom." Avery smiled at the girl in understanding. Before she had gotten her own broom, she had fallen off the school brooms many times thanks to her lack of knowing how quickly the brooms could stop.

Eira offered a grateful smile as she picked up the stubborn thing, frowning when she realized that she might look like a fool in front of someone else.

But what are her other alternatives?

Frankly, she'd rather have a dragon carry her in its jaws than fly on the broom, but she needed to clear the first lesson at the very least.

"That's very kind of you to offer, Ms. Gray" she replied, "I do hope you have some patience with someone of my... inexperience around broomsticks" she ended with a weak chuckle, hoping that her nerves weren't obvious.

Because she can definitely feel her palms rapidly getting wet against the grain of the wood. She looked up into the skies, the cheerful weather seemed to mock her current state but she refused to be trounced by a broom.

Eira looked back to Avery, seeing her expectant expression and nodded, "Alright, I'm ready to follow your instructions!" Showing her enthusiasm, she held the broom in place and firmly placed her feet on the ground, inwardly wishing that she could take root in the soil instead.

Merlin forbid Rafal or Harvey see her make a fool of herself but it calls for desperate measures.

Avery smiled a bright smile before saying, "Don't worry. I'm probably the most patient flying instructor there is. I understand how hard it can be to first start out with a broom, so we'll start with the basics."

Avery whipped her broom around and got into a position where she could safely kick off the ground. Once she was in a position she deemed safe for a beginner, she said, "So, the first step to broom riding is to make sure you're positioned correctly. This can help especially when you need to take off quickly."

Avery waited for the girl to mount her broom before she said, "Good. Now, this is the most important part of taking off. If you kick off too hard, you could injure yourself, and if you kick too little, you won't be getting off the ground. For now, we're just going to do a simple hover above the ground. The trick is to gently kick off, but be firm enough with the kick to just get at least a couple feet off the ground."

Avery watched and waited as the girl did this. She hoped her instructions were clear. She hadn't actually ever taught someone before, so she was hoping that she was doing a good job. Otherwise, she would have to come up with a different tactic.
