It was a beautiful, cool noon in spring, an unusual occurrence in the scorching week it's been so far. At the moment, it was a free period for most first years, and Emmy was spending it by taking some time to explore the castle a little more. She'd been to most of the common places already, but she hadn't investigated places like the Trophy Room or the Duelling Room. It was either because she didn't have the time to, or she was too scared to ruin anything. But those worries had disappeared, and right now was the perfect time for her.

Emmy went up to the fourth floor, making sure not to slip on the stairs as she had done so a few times already. She strolled through the mostly empty hallways, occasionally spotting a few first years walking by, chattering away. As she turned the corner, she spotted a pair of large doors, which Emmy knew was the Duelling Room. She pushed them open, ignoring the regulations printed on a placard outside. It wasn't like she was going to duel anyone in there.

Peeking through before actually entering, she noticed that it was empty, in a way that made it seemed it was abandoned. She tiptoed in, and her elbow hit something, causing it to crash to the ground. It was a dummy, and she quietly picked it up, wincing, hoping no one had heard the noise.

There were stairs leading up to the stage in the middle of the room, which Emmy used to get herself on top of the surface. She patted her left pocket, making sure that her wand was tucked safely inside of it. Seeing that it was, she let out a sigh of relief, even though there was no specific reason for why she had even checked.

Emmy considered pulling out her wand and testing some of the spells she had learned in her Defense Against the Dark Arts class. It couldn't be too bad, right? But she knew she would get into some sort of trouble. But what if she didn't get caught?

Luisa stretched her arms. Some practice with her magic would be fun. There weren't very many places to practice some of the spells she was learning, professors were too worried about people’s safety and all that. What was the point of worrying about stuff like that? Most injuries could and would be patched up rather quickly, honestly she would have just practiced in the courtyard or something, but the school did have a place for this, and while she didn't mind losing a few house points over a bit of fun, getting lectured over stuff did limit a person’s fun having time
She pushed the door to the dueling room open, now that she thought about it she wasn't sure if she was allowed to be in here without a professor present, not that it mattered really she thought, less of a problem if she practiced here than anywhere else. She noticed the other girl in the room.
“Oh hey, i think i saw you at the sorting ceremony,” she smiled, if another first year was here she was probably allowed to be here “what was your name again?” sheesh if she could remember very many peoples names from the ceremony. She had be rather focused on if she would be sorted into Gryffindor or not.

Hand on top of her pocket, Emmy prepared to pull out her wand. All of a sudden, she heard footsteps, but light ones. Luckily it was silent, so she could hear almost any noise. Emmy rushed to put her wand away, forcing it down her wand. She quickly jumped off the platform and pretended to be lost.

A Gryffindor girl emerged from the doorway, with curly-reddish brown hair, which is what Emmy noticed first about the girl, but not in a bad way. After that, Emmy's eyes met the girl's, which was a pretty green. Emmy's shoulder released all the tension they were holding when she realized it was just another student. Judging from her height, she seemed like a second or third year. Or maybe she was just a very tall first year.

The girl said something about recognizing Emmy from the sorting ceremony, further proving that the girl was just above average height. She asked Emmy for her name again.

"Wow, you must have really good memory. I'm Emmy, what's your name?" Emmy asked, picking at her brain to see if she remembered this girl from anywhere.

Emmy started wondering what Luisa was doing in here, too. Was she exploring, like Emmy? Examining her face, Emmy realized Luisa didn't look like she had been caught off-guard, so she assumed that she had an actual, productive purpose to be in this room.

"What are you doing in here?" Emmy inquired, trying not to sound nosy.

Luisa gave the other girl a smile. She seemed nice, at least so far, well polite at least. That had to count for something. She seemed surprised that Emmy had recognised her from the ceremony. Shed been staring at the hat the whole time, it was hard not to at least not see the people beneath it, even for a moment, so she at least had a vague idea of what most of the other first years looked like, even then she hadn't been positive, but what the other girl said practically confirmed it.
“OH, uh, I'm Luisa Duncan. It's nice to meet you,” damnit, she knew she should have paid more attention to her father’s lessons, he would have probably said something about introducing yourself before asking for somebody’s name, but really his lectures could be very dull most of the time, so one could hardly blame her for not paying attention very often.
“Er, I wanted to see if I could practice a spell I just learned down here… it's technically not a dueling spell but I wanted to test something,” she shrugged. “What are you doing down here? I thought I'd be the only one poking around in here where there wasn't an active duel going on.”

The Gryffindor introduced herself as Luisa Duncan. Emmy racked her brains, and she vaguely remembered a Duncan being called at the ceremony. Or was it Davis? Whatever it was, it didn't matter. Based off of the girls manner and behavior, if Emmy were the sorting hat, she would have also put Luisa in Gryffindor.

Observing Luisa, Emmy noticed that she was a little awkward. Not in a shy way exactly, but it was pretty hard to explain. Maybe she wasn't that good when it came to social interaction. Emmy personally thrived on social interaction. Talking to people was her strong suit, and it just made her very happy.

“Er, I wanted to see if I could practice a spell I just learned down here… it's technically not a dueling spell, but I wanted to test something,” Luisa explained, jolting Emmy out of her wandering thoughts. "What are you doing here?"

Emmy tilted her head at Luisa. Interesting. The "er" in the beginning made Emmy wonder if Luisa was hiding something. Then again, Emmy was jumping to unsupported conclusions.

"That's cool. What were you going to test?" Emmy probed, trying to get some more information.

What if it were something dangerous yet intriguing, like one of the three Unforgivable Curses? If that were the case, then Emmy would probably have to somehow exit without seeming awkward. But also, she'd wanted to see one of them actually happen.

"I was just exploring. I've finished all my homework, so I figured I might take a look around,"Emmy responded. It sounded like a dumb excuse, but it was the truth.

Emmy realized she was getting more interested in what Luisa was going to try. If Emmy wanted to become a more skilled witch, she would have to try to do cast some spells, even if it meant getting in trouble. She wasn't going to be a goody-two-shoes. Plus, what was there to lose.

"If you're doing something involving magic...could I help?" Emmy asked, an excited and mischievous gleam in her eyes.

Luisa shrugged at the girl’s response
“If you'd like, I suppose. I was going to try out the sparks spells I learned in class earlier. Not the most thrilling thing i suppose but it is the first spell i've learned” she sighed at this, she really wished they would be taught something more interesting, really, a sparks spell? Hardly the most useful of spells out there, just made bits of color burst out of them. “I get the appeal of exploring, though the duelling area seems a bit mundain when it's empty like this though.”
She moved across from one one of the dummies and practiced aiming and shooting one of the sparks spells she had learned. She really hoped to learn more duelling spells later but she supposed this would help with aim at first. She turned to Emmy “have you learned the sparks spells yet? If you have, why don't you give it a try quickly?” she hoped this girl would be someone she could practice dueling with later, it would certainly be interesting. Her family had told her a lot about how duelling worked, and her parents had done some friendly duelling in the back yard several times, some for practice others to show students what it might look like, Luisa herself was exited to get into it.

Shrugging, Luisa replied that she was going to practice a sparks spell. Emmy thought for a little bit, referencing back to the list of rules she had seen hung up in her common room. Magic was allowed, for extracurricular and studious activities. Technically, since all the first years had learned about the sparks spell, it could be considered as "studying." Whether it was against the rules or not, Emmy did not care.

It's not like it was a dangerous spell or anything. No one would get hurt, unless you somehow failed to do such an easy spell. Emmy thought it was a really simple spell, but she kept this to herself, not wanting to seem snotty.

All of a sudden, Luisa walked over to one of the dummies, that were probably stuffed with sandbags, and shooting spark spells at it. The reflection of the bright, colorful sparks lit up both of their eyes, as the sparks collided with the dummy with a crackle. A slight wisp of smoke rose from the spot she had hit it with and dissolved into the cool air.

"Why don't you give it a try quickly?" Luisa offered.

Emmy nodded, pulling out her wand slowly out of her pockets. She did the sparks spell the same way she had been taught, and it hit the dummy with a similar crackle to Luisa's, except a tad bit quieter. Or she was just delusional. A small puff of smoke arose, just like Luisa had done. Emmy stared at it for a while, and looked back at Luisa. Suddenly, she wondered if the slight traces of smoke or loud noises would attract someone. But it was probably fine. The fact that this might not be allowed was what added to the fun of it.

"Are you in the duelling club?" Emmy asked, thinking of the way Luisa had so gracefully cast her spell. The way she did it was more skilled than the average witch/wizard.

Luisa shook her head no “I really want to join though. I think the team is full but ill be giving it a look over later to see if i can sign up. It does look like a lot of fun though!” it did, and besides if she wanted to be a curse breaker being able to duel would be a very important ability.
She watched Emmy try the spell a few times. Not bad she supposed. “Are you thinking of joining? It would be fun to duel together once we learn a few more spells.”
She herself was glad the club was still intact. Her parents had told her about doing it as students, practice duelling during their free time. She hoped she could be as good as them one day. Not that it mattered of course. She still had a lot of school to go though before she could even think of being a cursebreaker, too bad she actually needed to get decent grades in so many classes, or she’d just drop school all together as soon as she could.
She looked at emmy, perhaps having someone with her to practice with, either duelling or anything really would be helpful. She should ask. Though it might be rude to interrupt thier conversation

In response to Emmy's question, Luisa said she wanted to join, but couldn't because the club was already full. Nodding at this, Emmy did hear a lot of noises every time she walked past the duelling room. It had always seemed crowded and chaotic. Duelling was pretty dangerous, especially if you give some immature students the privilege of using magic freely. But no injuries had happened yet, at least none of that she was aware of.

"Are you thinking of joining? It would be fun to duel together once we learn a few more spells," Luisa said after watching Emmy cast her spells.

"I mean, the idea has crossed my mind a few times, but I think i'm more interested in Quidditch," Emmy explained, stopping in the middle of casting her spells.

Her arm aching from doing the same spells over and over again, she stopped casting her spells. She took a seat in a small wooden chair nearby that creaked of age when she sat on it.

"Did you want to practice any other spells?" she asked Luisa.

There was still a lot of time left until the free period was over, and maybe they could spend some time working on more spells. Luisa had an expression on her face that made Emmy think that she needed to say something. She could've just been imagining it though.

From her seat, Emmy did another sparks spell out of boredom. Unfortunately, because of her horrible posture, it missed the dummy terribly. Emmy watched in hopelessness as the sparks flew past the dummy and hit the portrait of Professor Flitwick. He gave her a hard glare and opened his mouth. Please don't call a professor, please don't call a professor. Emmy thought wildly.
