Save a Horse, Ride a Cow Oonagh

Summer of 2024

Summer was a magical time. Dennis’ family took his first summer back as an excuse to do all the things. From going to Hogsmeade just to spend the day, to traveling to London and Glasgow. Anything they wanted to do they readily used the excuse of Dennis coming home to fulfill whatever dream they had while he was away. Dennis didn’t mind one bit. His family didn’t normally travel, preferring to save money and invest, but ever since Dennis started Hogwarts, he had seen a very different side to his family.

On this particular hot day in summer, the redhead boy from Edinburgh found himself in Stirling. A town nestled between Edinburgh and Glasgow. His family wanted to set up in the area but Dennis needed to clear his head from the whirlwind adventure. He chose at this particular time to go out into the countryside, the farmland, to take a walk. Muggle life was nothing new to the ginger. He grew up in Edinburgh with two wizarding parents who loved muggle life and muggle things. It was really nice, then, on these occasions to go out and enjoy the quiet country life. It was vastly different than Hogwarts, or even the international hustle and bustle of his hometown. Here is was just real people. Dennis appreciated that after spending a school year at one of the most eccentric places in the world.

As he walked the stonewall lined roads, he came across a pasture with cattle grazing. Dennis was oddly fascinated by cows. They were big, seemed kind of slow, but were surprisingly nimble when they had to be. Kind of beautiful, when he stopped to think about it, leaning against one of the stonewalls he had been walking along. Then, squinting against the sun of midday he saw something quite peculiar. Was…someone…riding a cow? Perhaps some have heard to save a horse, but a cow? Dennis shook his head, and no matter how many times he rubbed his eyes or shook his head, there she was. A girl was riding a cow in the pasture. He had no words but the sight beckoned for answers.

Dennis, without realizing, started toward the girl. Was this private property? Could he get in trouble? Would he annoy the girl? None of that really mattered because he just had to know… “What are you doing?”

Calling Oonagh a little bit pissed off would be an understatement, she was majorly angry. At her mom, at the letter that arrived and the world itself. Part of her wanted to believe that this was all an elaborate plan from the teachers to get her into a boarding school to punish her for misbehaving, so that they never had to see her again.

She had not even caused a lot of trouble in school before summer break! Yes, she had punched another kid's nose bloody on the last day of school, but that kid totally had it coming! And she hadn't even gotten into detention for it because it happened after classes in the hallway and everyone was just ready to go home and greet the summer. So had she been, until her mother had told her they had visitors who wanted to discuss a special opportunity just a few days after.

As on many days in which she felt incredibly insulted or pissed off, she made her way over to one of the pastures, the one that took hear at least a half an hour walk to get to without the tractor. But there was something oddly satisfying to stomp her boots across the badly paved roads, kicking stray pebbles like a small soccer ball occasionally. It cleared her brain somewhat at least, while she angrily chewed on a long, dry blade of grass, as she had seen cowboys do in some old time movies and cartoons, that her mom and dad watched every so often.

The highland cows were an interesting bunch. Fluffy creatures and very huggable. As she spotted one of the calmer ones grazing near the fence, she pulled herself up onto the wooden structure and then, after making the cow aware of her presence, climbed onto the creature's back. Aware and used to the girl's antics, and being one of the cows the girl had grown up with, the cattle barely paid the extra bit of weight now on her back any mind.

So eventually she laid back on her back, resting, as the cow moved lazily across the pasture, sticking close to the fence and occasionally attempting to reach the taller blades of grass past the fenced in area. Oonagh was not sure how much time had passed, momentarily dozing off for a while as the gentle sunlight made her feel all cozy and the sway of the cow's movement lulled her into a state of drowsiness, calming some of her frustration as her eyes drifted close.

It was an unfamiliar voice that drew her attention next. “What are you doing?” After furrowing her eyebrows, she opened an eye against the sun and frowned at the carrier of the voice. Quite a stupid question, if one were to ask Oonagh. What she was doing was quite obvious. "Whit are ye doing?" she gave, what felt like, a witty response mustered the boy begrudgingly from head to toe. The cow she had been resting on, after momentarily pausing to look up and locate the source of noise, flicked her ear in disinterest before stuffing her face back into the pasture. "Ye really niver stop yer eating, huh coo?" She huffed as she sat up, sitting pretty much backwards on the cow now as she looked down at the boy.

Save a Horse, Ride a Cow Oonagh
A fuzzy cow and a strange looking girl. Dennis never saw such a sight before and he was friends with a half-goblin. As he drew closer the cow was more interested in eating than anything else happening. Dennis’ question woke up the girl who was laying across the bovine. She sat up backwards on the cow and threw his question back at him. He blinked, flabbergasted by the insinuation that it was in fact him doing something he shouldn’t. She was the one sitting on an animal! “Well…I…” Dennis said, not really sure how to answer or explain what it was he was doing and why he was all the way out there.

“My family is camping nearby so I came out for a walk…” he said, his voice fading, now looking at his feet like they were more interesting than the girl. She seemed to ignore him and continued to talk to the cow. “Do you…uh…talk to them often? It seems quite comfortable!” The Ravenclaw said, ever the optimistic one. “Does the cow have a now?” He asked trying his best to turn this awkward conversation into a more friendly one. The girl had a look as if she were capable of attacking a complete stranger, good thing he never left home without his wand!

Apparently her throwing the question right back at him, stumped the other boy. Which, well, fair enough. But that was hardly her problem to solve, it was up to the other boy to find his words and speak up otherwise the girl would just go back to lounging across the back of her fuzzy friend that seemed to have an insatiable appetite for grass and clovers. However she did not have to wait for long and the boy actually did regain his capability of speech, causing Oonagh to look at him, waiting for what he had to say.

“My family is camping nearby so I came out for a walk…” the boy began and Oonagh gave a nod. She gave the cow a pat to warn it about the incoming potential to be startled and then slid off its side and landed in the meadow with a small thump. She approached the fence and leaned her arms across the wooden structure, the planks serving as the perfect underground to place her underarms upon and set her chin to rest atop them. "Are ye lost then or whit?" She asked, boldly with narrowed eyes. “Do you…uh…talk to them often? It seems quite comfortable!” She nodded. "Aye, thay make well good company," she explained, giving a half shrug due to limited mobility of her leaning on the fence now.

"Whaur are ye from then?" Based on the way the other spoke, but also the lack of confusion when she spoke, she assumed that the boy mustn't be living too far away from Scotland, despite him and his family clearly not being local as they were on a vacation for camping. Which sounded pretty fun, the girl had to admit. Regardless her mild curiosity, she was still clearly grumpy about the whole ordeal with the boarding school her parents had been talked into.
