Charms, Classes, and New Friends

As the charms class ended Mikey moved away from his desk hoping he had taken enough notes on the lecture. He remembered working on projects and homework with his friends back in the muggle world and felt a pang of loneliness in his chest. He wasn't completely lonely at school. He had made several friends even. But he missed the comradery and teamwork that he had back in the muggle world.

He decided there was no point in dwelling on the past and decided to put his mental effort into the future. Fortunately for him unless his assumption was wrong, it looked like he was not alone in the need for assistance and group effort in charms class. Veda Lunar (at least he was pretty sure that was her name) had just walked up to two other girls focusing on their work and asked if they would mind helping.

He wanted to jump right in and say he wanted help too. Or at least see if he could join in with the group and trade thoughts on the subject at hand. His confidence or lack thereof kept him glued to the spot. He decided the best approach would be to see how it plays out with Veda and decide from there. Mikey remained in earshot pretending he was looking for something and repacking his gear as he waited for events to unfold.

Charms class was even better than Graci had anticipated. She had been looking forward to it all summer, and the teacher had called them cabbages. CABBAGES!

She sighed, spunky teachers were wonderful.

The homework was average. Interesting, but average. It was her favourite so far, out of all the classes.

At the beginning of class, Graci was completely oblivious to her surroundings and had tripped over air, thankfully managing to catch herself before anyone saw, though she had an inkling someone had. She blamed it on excitement.

She couldn't get a certain melody out of her head too, so that didn't help, with her mind preoccupied. And she couldn't even sing it, it was one of the four seasons by Antonio Vivalidi, of all things.

Though Graci didn't mind, it made class seem more dramatic, and it helped her to focus better.

Homework, Cici, focus on your homework.

"Do you guys mind helping me? I'm kind of lost."

Graci looked up, a girl stood before her, asking for help.

"Well, if you're in the wrong classroom, I don't think I can help you, but homework? Any day." Graci smiled, trying to see if humor was a good first approach. She had been experimenting with things like such, and it was a fascinating experiment.

Back in London she had picked up a book of the study of sociology, and decided it was too large of a subject for her growing eleven year old brain.

It was a horrible day for Emmy. She'd woken up on the wrong side of the bed or something, because she'd gotten angry at everyone she'd interacted with the whole day. Her hair was a mess, bits flying out in all directions. Emmy had skipped breakfast working on her Potions assignment. Stomping her way out of Charms, she shoved the door open with much more force than intended. It hit the wall with a loud bang.

Before Emmy could even walk out the door, she realized that Graci, her Potions assignment partner was also in the room. This was a perfect time to tell her to meet Emmy in the library tomorrow. She'd definitely look like a fool causing such a scene and walking back in.

Not daring to look at anyone, she strode over to her insufferable Potions partner. Emmy probably looked ridiculous, but she didn't care. Well, not at the moment. Deep down, even she knew that this embarrassing moment would bite her back at some point in the day.

"Hey. You. We're working on it tomorrow at the library during our free period. Don't even try arguing with me," Emmy said to Graci, tapping hard on the desk.

Emmy heard footsteps behind her and whirled around. If this person was going to get all up in her face on this horrible day-

"Do you guys mind helping me? I'm kind of lost,"

Emmy's gaze softened. The girl was lost, and didn't mean any harm. She probably wasn't even aware of Emmy's mood, and Emmy couldn't blame her for that.

"Well, if you're in the wrong classroom, I don't think I can help you, but homework? Any day," Graci replied with a genuine smile. Emmy rolled her eyes.

"Of course I can help," Emmy tried giving her a warm smile, like Graci, but it probably looked crooked because of her anger.

Sneaking a small glare at Graci, she wondered if she'd even heard her. Emmy took a seat near the girl, ready to assist her. Nearby, Emmy noticed a Ravenclaw boy standing off to the side, watching them. She looked at him up and down, by instinct. A little above average height, and okay looks. Emmy looked away, waiting for the other Hufflepuff's response.

Veda laughed at the Gryffindor girl's joke, and was about to respond when her fellow Hufflepuff offered to help. Veda sighed in relief, sitting back down at her desk.

Thank you so much, question three is killing me.

While the girl sat down, Veda followed her line of sight to a boy, Ravenclaw by the looks of it. He was looking at them, then immediately looked away at a random object. Veda could instinctively tell he wanted to talk, needed help, wanted to help.

Whatever the reason, she wanted to include him.

Hey, uh, Ravenclaw dude? Do you want to sit with us? Veda flushed in embarrassment. Ravenclaw dude? Really? While waiting for a response, she took out a piece of fresh parchment, not the one she had used as her makeshift planner, for the homework.

While doing this, she was thinking, Maybe I found some friends? So far into the school year, Veda was kind of a loner. She had met a few girls on the train, however they got assigned different class schedules. Don't get ahead of yourself she thought, quickly grabbing the parchment.

"Hey, uh, Ravenclaw dude? Do you want to sit with us?" Mikey heard a girl's voice call. Apparently, he was not as well versed in looking like he was doing nothing as he had hoped. His cheeks started to turn red in embarrassment at getting caught but he had planned on going over to talk to them anyway so it wasn't all bad. Recollecting himself as well as his position he took a step in there direction.

Moved across the classroom over to them trying to recall any past experiences he had with any of them but he drew a blank. He couldn't tell if it was from nerves or if he had not really had any interaction with the three. None of them were Ravenclaw so he guessed it made sense to not know them but it was also a sign that he needed to start meeting people outside of his own house.

He made it to a comfortable distance of about three feet from the table and reached out his hand to shake hands with the one girl he thought he knew the name of. "Your Veda right? I'm Mikey." Handshaking seemed overly formal but he wasn't sure what else he should do to introduce him self and hoped they didn't think he was weird.

"Hey. You. We're working on it tomorrow at the library during our free period. Don't even try arguing with me." Before Graci had talked to the girl that walked up to them, she was in a conversations with a different Hufflepuff. Emalyn, her potions partner from the other day. The horror. Graci didn't feel as though she was the cause of their strife, but she very well could be.

"I wouldn't dream of arguing, see you there I guess." All of Graci's words were clipped with what she hoped to be either sarcasm or indifference. She didn't know which she hoped had come out.
~Back to current convo~

Emmy said that she could help, and they all sat down together. Question three. Graci was just reading it over when the girls said something. Seemingly beckoning a Ravenclaw boy to sit with them.

She looked between the three, mentally face palming for missing their earlier words. The boy held out his hand to the unnamed Hufflepuff girl, and announced his name. Mikey Forville. Cool. A nice name.

Graci observed as they shared pleasantries, hoping to hear the last name she needed for this homework project.

Her mental playlist did a quick one-eighty, turning from classical to whatever 'I Hear a Symphony' by Cody fry was. She found herself humming so silently most everyone probably couldn't hear. Probably. ~I used to hear a simple song, that was, until you came along~

"I wouldn't dream of arguing, see you there I guess," Graci replied. Emmy shot her a glare.

Ignoring Graci, Emmy redirected her attention the Hufflepuff, who voiced that she needed help with question three. She rummaged through her crossbody bag and retrieved her quill and ink bottle just in case. Placing both carefully on the desk so they didn't spill, she heard the Hufflepuff call someone over to them.

Emmy observed as the other Hufflepuff beckoned the standoffish Ravenclaw boy to them. He seemed shy. Or maybe he was the type of person who was shy until you got comfortable with them.

"Hi, I'm Emalyn Waverly. But you can call me Emmy," Emmy said to everyone, watching as he shook hands with the Hufflepuff girl, introducing himself as Mikey Forville.

The assignment seemed simple, but it definitely wasn't something to leave for last minute. Emmy was a pro at leaving things for last minute. At least she'd finished all over her assignments already. Besides the Potions one, but she'd get to work on that tomorrow at the library.

"What does question three say?" Emmy asked, leaning over the Hufflepuff's shoulder, using the dim candlelight to help her see.

Charms wasn't her strong suit, but it was worth a try. Also, it would help her get her own work done.

"Oh, I'm Veda Lunar," she said, feeling weird after everyone else introduced themselves.

Veda grabs her paper and reads off the question to the new group.

"Uh, it says, What should you never use the Mending Charm on and why? I might have blanked out during that segment," she said, scratching the back of her neck awkwardly.

Great Veda, now you look like an idiot in front of these people! she thought. Oh well, that's something to dwell on in the middle of the night while I should be asleep.

While waiting for a response, she took the opportunity to observe this group. Graci and Emmy looked like the had some... tension. They were snarking back and forth, in a way Veda hoped was more sibling than enemy. Mikey looked a little unsure of himself, so she shot him a smile before looking back down at the paper.

She did not know why Emmy was still angry at her, Graci was being completely civil. It'll be fine eventually, she cannot stay mad at me forever. Can she?

She felt kind of conflicted, apologize or stand her ground? Ah, I have just the right answer, get back to charms.

"Ah yes, question three, uhm, well, just things that you wouldn't fix with this kind of magic, right, so, as Ms. Fresnel said, anything living, so like plants or people."

Graci wondered if she was going overboard. Her favorite class was charms, and she seemed to have a knack for it. She did not mind it at all, but she also did not want to be seen as a know it all.

Realizing she had not yet introduced herself to Mikey, she smiled at him, "I'm Graci, by the way, nice to meet you."

He seemed nice enough, and she hadn't had the pleasure of meeting many Ravenclaws yet, if any.

Graci looked over the rest of the homework. Not too complicated, but it would still be nice to have something to discuss with friends- and less than friends- about something. As opposed to normal chatter, of course.

She really wished this whole thing with Emalyn would just be over already, it was getting tiring, unreasonably so.
