A sweet spring day, with warm temperatures outdoors. Hogwarts provided just the place for students and staff to cool down. It felt nice for something other than the freezing cold that the winter brought. Emmy had a few assignments to work on, and since she had a free period, it was the perfect time to get something done. She'd already been to the library countless times, whether it was to explore or to do something productive.
Emmy pushed through the dark, heavy, oak doors and the familiar never-ending bookshelves came into sight. Today was a little more crowded than usual, with everybody either in a small group or studying in a corner by themselves. Emmy went to her standard spot at the sitting area, which was at a wooden table, accompanied with a wooden seat and a soft cushion. There were always two or three extra seats. She left them there both out of laziness and the secret want of someone to sit there.
Pulling out her study items, she looked outside the window closest to her, squinting through the rays of sun. She could even feel the heat through the library's thick walls. At least she wasn't outside, where she'd probably smolter to death. Emmy leaned back on the cushion and stretched. Her books and homework were finally unpacked.
Looking through her stack of homework, she decided to start with her Potions homework. Potions was her favorite subject of all classes, aside from Defense against the Dark Arts, but she didn't have homework for that class. Emmy pulled out her quill and started to take notes.

✽Avery loved the library. The old scent of books, the old tables scattered around, the bookshelves piled high with books, everything. It gave her a sense of peace. A feeling she needed after everything that had been happening lately. Before the break, her mind had been reeling with one thought constantly. Her grandfather. All she could hope was that he would recover from the deadly dragon pox that attacked his body. Avery still didn't know why he refused treatment. She knew he was stubborn, but she didn't expect to outright refuse treatment for a deadly disease because he believed he was strong enough to fight it on his own.
Avery was distracted. She didn't even realize how many people were actually in the library that day until she began searching for an empty table to read and do homework before she had to go to class again. She just hoped she would be able to focus, but, with how things were, she would probably end up doing anything but her homework. That's why she always spent late nights staying up and doing her homework. She didn't mind it, though. It was always relaxing to chill by the fire and let the warmth soak in.
Finally she found a table with only one person at it. A girl around Avery's age sat there. She seemed friendly enough, so Avery decided to ask if it was okay for her to sit there. She didn't recognize the girl, so making a new friend could also be on the agenda of doing anything but homework. Avery would much rather chat than do homework at the moment, though. Especially since her head was reeling with a million thoughts.
"Hi. Is it okay if I sit here?" Avery asked. Hoping she wasn't being rude by disturbing the girl while she was doing homework. ✽

Halfway into her homework, Emmy looked up and decided to give herself a break, both physically and mentally. This was so she didn't lose any "academic steam," where she completely gives up on her work, causing her to procrastinate. Emmy sat up, opening the window a little wider, letting in more light and air circulation.
Emmy stretched in her chair, looking around. The crowd had grown even more, and it had gotten a little louder. She wondered how the librarian could even deal with all this noise. Sighing, Emmy continued to do her homework, this time starting with Transfiguration, occasionally perusing a book or two.
She had to admit, being alone had its benefits, but it definitely had some major downfalls. It was very boring. There was no one to talk to, but at least Emmy could get some work done. After a handful of minutes, Emmy gave up. She'd do it another time...hopefully. This procrastination would definitely come back to bite her in the future.
Emmy was just packing her books and homework away when another first year approached her. By instinct, Emmy looked her up and down. She was a Gryffindor, as she could tell by her robes and posture.
"Hi. Is it okay if I sit here?" the brown-haired girl asked.
"Of course! I just finished my homework," Emmy replied, smiling at the girl, "I'm Emalyn, just call me Emmy, though."
The girl looked preoccupied, and maybe a little stressed. Emmy could tell by the expression on her face.

✽Avery smiled and set her bags onto the floor before pulling out the chair and sitting on it. She was glad that the girl didn't mind that she was joining the table. She glanced at the homework the girl had just finished and realized it was potions. Avery had finished that assignment a little while ago, and all she had left was transfiguration, so she wouldn't mind having a chat with her new table partner if they girl didn't mind. "I'm Avery." Avery responded when the girl asked her name.
Avery carefully pulled out her transfiguration book as she waited for the girl to respond. When she checked her paper, she realized that she only had a couple questions left that seemed relatively simple. Avery quickly got to work on finishing those. Better to finish them now so she could hang out more than worrying about it later.
Avery smiled once she had finished her assignment. She was proud of her work since it was one of her better assignments in the class. Though, she had always enjoyed learning about science, she did know that it wasn't easy. Especially when it came to transforming something from one thing to another without messing up in the process. ✽

Folding her legs in the soft armchair, Emmy listened attentively as the Gryffindor introduced herself as Avery. It was a pretty name, to match such a pretty face. When Emmy looked at the assignment, she realized she had the same ones as her. Maybe they'd been in the same class but Emmy hadn't noticed her. Or perhaps maybe she was in the other class, and it was just a coincidence.
Emmy twirled her quill in her fingers out of pure boredom, glancing around at her surroundings. The soft whispers had risen to a gentle murmur, as more and more people filed into the library. Was the library the new courtyard or something? Emmy's wandering attention shifted back to the girl in front of her. By the look of her paper, Avery had gotten a lot of questions done, so it would be okay if she started some sort of conversation.
"Do you do any extracurriculars?" Emmy asked curiously.
From first glance, Avery appeared to be a well-rounded person, excelling in both academics and possibly other areas. Then again, Emmy was just making up things.
Emmy couldn't help but keep looking out the window. The sky was just so pretty today, and it wasn't even dusk or dawn yet. She hoped she didn't seem distracted or uninterested. The outdoor landscape was just irresistible, and she had a great view of the greenhouses below, all the other students attending Herbology. The shine of their robes reflected back at Emmy with the strong beams of sunlight.
"It's a very warm day. Is that why it's so crowded in here?" Emmy inquired out loud, staring at the growing amount of people in the library.

✽Avery smiled and looked up from her completed work when the girl asked if she did any extracurricular activities. She nodded and said, "Yeah. I'm the backup Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. My first game is in a few weeks, actually. Do you do any extracurricular activities?"
As Avery waited for the girl to respond, she saw the girl look out the window. Avery glanced out it and saw an amazing sight. Bright sunshine poured through the window and bathed the library in light. Avery could see the greenhouses from here too as people walked in and out of them. What a beautiful day. Avery made a mental note to herself to practice some Quidditch later if she had time before dinner. It was too beautiful of a day to not be outside later.
Avery shrugged her shoulders when Emmy asked if everyone was inside because it was warm out. "That might be the case, but, if I were them, I would love to be outside right now. It looks so clear and warm. Too bad I have to go to class after this period ends."
Avery smiled and turned her attention away from the window. Whenever she looked outside, all she could wish was to be out there, but she had things to do, and, if she wasn't careful, she would probably miss class since she would be enjoying the warm weather. ✽

As Emmy listened to Avery's response, she felt the sun breathing down her back, warming her dark robes. Since it wasn't a bright color, it absorbed more heat and light. Emmy slipped her robes off, leaving her white t-shirt on. She immediately felt the change, feeling more cooler and lighter. Emmy stuffed her robes into her bag, uncaring about how unusually disorganized she was acting.
Avery explained that she was part of the Quidditch team, as a backup Seeker. Emmy's jaw dropped at this. She was so lucky to have that sort of opportunity. Quidditch seemed so fun, even though Emmy had never touched a broom in her whole life, aside from tidying up. The desire to become a Chaser had stuck with Emmy ever since she'd been a child.
"Wow. That's really cool," Emmy replied, "I don't do anything yet. Quidditch seems really fun."
While double checking to make sure she'd completed all of her homework, she listened to what else Avery had to say. She was a very interesting person, raising Emmy's respect for Avery.
"That might be the case, but, if I were them, I would love to be outside right now. It looks so clear and warm. Too bad I have to go to class after this period ends," Avery spoke.
Emmy nodded her head in understanding. Personally, she wouldn't want to be outside in this scorching weather. Being inside already made her feel like a pile of coals.
"What time does this period end again?" Emmy asked, too lazy to take out her schedule after she had just packed up her things.

✽Avery smiled when Emmy's draw dropped at the mention of Quidditch. Avery also had similar feelings about it. She loved the sport so much that she was shocked when she had found out that she had been accepted onto the team. She couldn't wait to finally play in a match. Even though she knew she would be backup. That's when an idea popped into her head. Maybe she could show Emmy some of the ropes of Quidditch? "Hey! I just had an idea! You seen like you want to play Quidditch! What position would you like to play, and, if you want, maybe I could show you the ropes sometime?"
Avery smiled. The idea consuming her and making her more excited. That would be a lot of fun! Even though they were both from different houses, Avery didn't care. All she wanted was to help a possible new friend out with what seemed like something she was passionate about!
When Emmy asked what time their free period ended, Avery thought for a moment. They had't been in the library for very long as far as she knew, so they probably had only about 30ish minutes left. "I think we only have about half an hour left of this period until we go to class." Avery sighed. She was enjoying her free period and didn't really want to go to class yet. ✽

There was a brief moment of silence that broke when Avery said she could show Emmy the basics of Quidditch. Emmy's face lit up, visible excitement at this opportunity to finally pursue something that she loved. Also, it would be another distraction from all her stressful schoolwork. Overall, it sounded very beneficial and fun.
"Really? That sounds perfect! I've always wanted to play as Chaser," Emmy responded, a big, genuine smile stretching across her face, "What position are you?"
Excitement was bubbling inside of Emmy as she immediately began creating scenarios in her head, visualizing herself wearing Hufflepuff's Quidditch Robes. You mustn't get ahead of yourself, Emmy. she scolded herself You've only touched a broomstick a few times. At this thought she regained her composure, but deep inside her she was struggling to contain herself.
But also, Emmy would have to do something as helpful for Avery too. Emmy would have to figure out what sort of things Avery was interested in, so she could return the favor. She didn't want to probe, and maybe Avery had a lot on her mind, so maybe it wasn't the best time to ask.
Avery said that there were about 30 minutes left of their free period. To confirm this, Emmy glanced at a wooden grandfather clock not too far away from her. Honestly, she really wasn't ready to leave. She had History of Magic after this; so she'd much prefer to talk to her new friend instead.

✽Avery smiled at the girl's enthusiasm and also became excited when she agreed to practice with Avery. Even though the girl wanted to be a Chaser, and Avery was a Seeker, she had learned some valuable lessons from one of her fellow teammates that was a Chaser before she was on the team.
"Sounds good! I may be a Seeker, but before I was on the team, one of my now teammates whose a Chaser taught me some valuable lessons. Whenever we practice, I could teach them to you too! They really helped my playing improve even though I still have my moments." Avery laughed at the memory when she ate dirt on the field. Even though it wasn't funny in the moment, she knew she could laugh about it now since it was so far in the past.
Avery was enjoying chatting with her new friend. She couldn't believe how much they had in common when they had only just met! Avery couldn't wait to show her the ropes of Quidditch. With an enthusiasm for the sport like hers, she would make a great Chaser. Maybe Avery could get her introduced with her bestie who also wanted to be a Chaser for the Hufflepuff team! ✽
