Matilda Mayfield ~ First Year ~ Hufflepuff

The start to Matilda's life isn't as cheery as most. While most parents who find out they are going to be growing their family would be beyond happy. For Matilda this wasn't the case. Her father never found out, and her mother well... Matilda was born to a young teenager. She was clearly not ready for the responsibility of raising a small child, she had been going through a rebellious phase perhaps, her family had been one of the old fashioned pureblood types - yet her mother had slept with a muggle while on a holiday - resulting in a pregnancy. Resulting in Matilda.

She was given up as soon as she was born, seen as no more than a stain upon the family bloodline.

But that wasn't the end of her story, far from it truly. At just a few months old, Matilda was adopted by an older couple who longed for one more child to raise as their own. Instantly she was loved and given all the attention she had lacked in the first few months of her life. Even as a young child - Matilda was aware that she had been adopted, but also - more importantly perhaps, that she was loved. She was chosen by her parents, to be apart of their family.

She knew nothing of her start to life, before becoming a Mayfield - just that her birth mother had been too young to raise a child - to this day, she still isn't aware of the rest although her adoptive parents have enough information to put the pieces together, they know of her bloodline - and also know that one day perhaps it would be best to speak to Matilda about it. Until that day however, she is a happy and bright little girl.

Her parents raised a well spoken young girl who has always been curious and has always loved to learn. But she grew up knowing to still have fun, to explore and learn all at once. Matilda adores her parents, having a close relationship with both her mother and her father - but also remaining close to her older siblings - of which she has three, two older brothers and one older sister. She is very much the youngest thanks to her parents adopting her when they were older, and all of her siblings have finished their schooling while Matilda is just begining her own.

While it was pretty much thought that Matilda would show her signs of magic eventually, it was a little surprise that it wasn't until she was almost six that her first real accidental magic reared. It was just before her sixth birthday and she was trying her best to stay up, to not go to bed and she was fighting the sleep the best she possibly could.

With small grumbles as she clung to her father, a pout on her face as she begged for 'just one more story' - always just one more was not a rare request for the inquisitive little girl, but this time as she rubbed at her eyes, begging for just one more. Her bookshelf shook, the books jostled and some falling down - others took to floating, and all the while the small girl with her head resting on her fathers shoulder, mumbling about 'just one more' didn't notice a thing until several books thumped against the wall.

It was rare that she had magical outbursts after that one event, but not uncommon. Like all small magical children, her emotions and her magic have always been very much intertwined. There were times when things around her would seem to take on a bit of a life of their own, and her temper.. well - it had always been a bit fiery but adding magic to the mix was not a very wise idea. Still, she learned to do her best to keep it under some control and as she grew the outbursts were far better than they had once been.

Matilda made a countdown to her Eleventh birthday, eagerly awaiting the owl that would arrive with her letter in tow. For Matilda it was far more exciting than Christmas, for she had grown up hearing the stories from her siblings about what they experienced at Hogwarts, and what her parents had even experienced. It was all rather wonderful and an amazing experience for each of them - as things grew closer, her excitement was even stronger. The morning that her letter did arrive however was one that she would forever remember even when she is old and grey.

For over a month her little count down had been going on, each day another day being crossed out on the calender - but along came the day she had been waiting for, and the letter completely slipped her mind until Ana came toddling over with an envelope in hand...

Description
Matilda is a sweet girl, she has a big heart and cares deeply for those around her. That isn't to say she allows anyone to walk over her, far from it - she is not afraid to speak up for what she believes in and she has a bit of a temper at times, but it takes a lot to get her temper flaring, usually a bad word about someone she cares for is what sparks her temper. She is very curious and loves to learn, although sometimes focusing on reading a book - as much as she likes to read, can be rather boring and often her attention can drift.

Quirks & Habits

• Matilda loves to be outdoors, if she could - she would be outside as much as she was possibly allowed. However with her fair skin, she burns rather easily - and no amount of sunprotection seems to be able to completely help her to not end up burnt.
• She can often be found hanging out in trees, her body mostly hidden from the sun by the leaves and branches, more than once she has fallen asleep in a tree - much to her mothers concern.
• When nervous, Matilda tends to ramble on - barely even knowing what she is saying as often the topic shifts as she's speaking - going from one subject to a complete other one. This usually ends with the young girls face a bright red.
• She can be incredibly protective of those she is close to, which can be both a good and a bad thing - although she personally sees it as a good thing. This has led to her ending up in trouble more than once as she is determined to make sure anyone she cares about is okay.

Elizabeth Mayfield ~ Adoptive Mother, 49

Matilda adores her mother, while she is well aware that she was adopted she has never not thought of her as her mother. For a few years she had her parents mostly to herself as her brothers and sister were either at school or out in the world, but then Alex's daugther, Ana was born and her parents were also grandparents. It was a little odd at first, but Matilda loved to help her mother take care of Ana while Alex was busy at work. Elizabeth was born into a Pureblooded family, less of the purist type and more open, despite others bad words upon these choices.

Matthew Mayfield ~ Adoptive Father, 51

As much as she loves her mother, there is little doubt that Matilda is very much a Daddy's girl. She is incredibly close with her father, who has always highly encouraged Matilda's curiousity and adventurous side. The father and daughter often have been known to cause little pranks and jokes, all well meaning of course. Matthew was born to Muggle Parents, although sadly they died when Matilda was a toddler still, she still has heard many stories of them and her father made sure the children knew the muggle world growing up, particularly as it was known Matilda's biological father was one as well.

Alexander Mayfield ~ Adoptive Brother, 27

Matilda isn't as close to Alex due to the large gap in age between them, but she still adores her oldest brother and proudly speaks of him, she also sends him regular letters asking how he is and how her little niece is doing. He currently works as at St. Mungos, and she is beyond proud of everything he does.

Katherine Mayfield ~ Adoptive Sister, 24

Kat is her only sister and in many ways Matilda believes her big sister is way too protective of her, that isn't to say she doesn't like it. Far the opposite, she finds it to be comforting knowing her sister watches over her - but she does miss spending time with her sister and can't wait to see her again, like with her brothers - she sends regular letters to her sister, who in return sends them back. Katherine is currently working as an Auror much to Matilda's pride.

Christopher Mayfield ~ Adoptive Brother, 20

Better known as simply Chris, is the closest in age to Matilda, he had been just about to start his own first year at Hogwarts when Matilda was brought into their family and had the most time with her compared to their siblings. As such they are naturally a little closer and he often sends her letters and small packages filled with sweets.

Anastasia Mayfield ~ Niece, 4

Little Ana is the daughter of Matilda's oldest brother Alexander, her mother died when she was a baby, and while her father works - Ana spends time with her grandparents. In many ways, Ana is more like a baby sister to Matilda, or at least she often liked to pretend - its a little strange to not see the little girl every day now Matilda is going to Hogwarts and she is certain she will miss her a lot more than expected.

Henrietta Woodrow ~ Close Friend, 11

Henri has been Matilda's friend since they were six years old, her parents moved near where Matilda's lived, just down the street. Like her parents, they were magical, although their oldest son was a Squib. There weren't a lot of kids her age nearby for Matilda to befriend, but when Henri and Tilly met, and they clicked quickly - the two little girls often would go off on small adventures outside, climbing trees and bringing home tiny animals who they claimed 'need help' usually small birds with injured legs or wings. Henri got her own letter a few weeks before Matilda did.

Timothy Barton ~ Close Friend, 10

Timmy was one of the first friends that Matilda made that attended the small school that was arranged near where she lived. Timmy's father is a wizard, while his mother is a kind Muggle woman. The school they attended was one that any Muggle children attended, but magical children did as well, at least until they turned eleven. Timmy was a little younger than herself, but very smart and a sweet boy, Matilda did her best to always look out for him after they met when the small boy was being picked on - it was then that Matilda decided she didn't like bullies at all. Despite him not attending Hogwarts, Matilda sends him letters regularly promising to tell him everything she can about her new school.
