At first glance, the Tavern seems the same to any others described in a fantasy book. The lights in the room are well-lit, the fireplace is burning bright, and the drinks behind the bar are plentiful, all that's missing are the patrons. The lack of other people gives the room an almost eerie atmosphere, this isn't how it's supposed to be like. As you walk in you get a better look at the tavern. The stage in the corner is left empty except for the lute leaning against the stool in the centre, as if it is waiting for a performer. Oddly enough, if you look closely at the lute there seems to be pieces of something behind it. All the tables in the room are empty but one, if you look to your left as you enter, you see some drinks - potions- on that table, multiple potions of varying colours. If you look at the bar, there is an old fashioned gramophone on the end of it, but unfortunately no records for it to play, continuing the tavern's empty atmosphere.

Once everyone enters the tavern the door you all entered in slams shut behind you, and a "click" signally how it has been locked. One of the only clues you have toward how to escape is a old brass combination lock, appearing to be nothing special, just a muggle style combination lock.

The other hint being the paper nailed around head height on the door, once someone opens it, it says:

We are in a favourite place for bards,
and I can be found in a pile of shards.
I’m in need of a quick repair,
and then I’ll be out of your hair.

Welcome to the Twisted Tavern! This is an escape room based on the classic fantasy tavern, there are five solvable clues, and thus 5 rounds of moderation, as we aim to keep this a short activity to moderately long game.

1. Moderation will occur every week. Your characters are allowed one moderated action per round, like casting a spell or drinking a potion. Things like talking to other characters do not require a moderated action.
2. Make sure you specify your action somewhere in your post for easy moderation.
3. Please include stats and abilities in each post for moderation purposes.
4. If you are joining this thread from another one, please specify that in the previous thread, along with if you are leaving this thread, though we ask that if you are leaving this thread to please communicate it with your group and your moderator before doing so.
5. All normal H.io rules apply in this thread.

Oonagh loved spring, though she also associated it with a lot of hard work. It is the time of year when the farm needed the most support and work to thrive, so her weekends and afternoons were spent helping out her mother in exchange for a bit of pocket money to spend when meeting up with other kids and friends. All in all, it was a life she could hardly complain about, though it often left her feeling exhausted and in need of a nap across a hay bale.

Suitable to greet the time of flowers and sunshine, she wore a nice dress with earthy terracotta colour, that bore no sleeves. Sticking out from a pocket at the side of it was a, so far still wrapped, big lollipop that was about the size of her palm. After having been warned multiple times about the importance of carrying her wand with her, she had naturally left it stuck at the back of the desk's drawer in her dorm. If she ended up needing it, she was sure a randomly procured object tossed hard enough would do the job, if not she had her fists she could thus far always rely on to settle altercations. Unrelated to this the nice rock she had picked up from the lake during an afternoon walk, because it had been so smooth and pretty, sat in the opposite side's pocket of her dress. The shoes she was wearing was a pair of comfortable, neutral colored sneakers with a colorful, spring-themed stitch pattern that she had found pretty for the occasion.

Her mood was rather good and she was looking forward to the event she had signed up, 'Twisted Tavern' or something it had been called, so she headed to the meeting point and was taken aback by the appearance of the room she had found herself in. It reminded her of some of the taverns closer to home with an addition of whimsy, her parents would have surely loved it here and she wished her phone hadn't died the moment she brought it to Hogwarts, disregarding the instruction given that 'magic' would interfere with the technology. At the time she had been quite sure it was a trick, but at this point in time she had seen things that human logic could not explain, it was a weird world. Regardless she wished she had her phone so she could take a picture and send it to her mother, she would have liked it here very much, but once a group of students had made it into the room, there was a tell-tale, audible "CLICK" and Oonagh groaned. Now that was just stupid. "Hey whit is up wi' this? Any o ye pullin a prank or somethin?" she put a hand up against her hip and glared down the group, before walking over to the door and noticing the paper that was nailed to the door.

She got to about the second line and had an epiphany, "Oh they want tae have shards! That's no hard tae dae!". The exclamation was followed by swift action when she reached for one of the bottled up potions (preferably orange or red in colour) and threw it at the door, very sure that she must have solved the riddle now. Or at the very least gotten them one step closer to defeating whatever game this was.

Having almost spent an entire school year at Hogwarts made Noah much more comfortable with all the weirdly, wonderful, magical things that occur on the daily. Granted he could still be easily caught off guard and walking through a ghost he thought he would never get used to. However, it was this comfort that allowed Noah the courage to sign up for this Twisted Taverns event.

Noah had put on his favorite grey t-shirt, dark brown khaki pants, his rotting indigo Chucks, and Jean jacket for the day. When it was close enough in the day, Noah made his way to where the Twisted Taverns event was being held. It looked as though one of his teammates had already gone inside. He entered with the others and the door clicked behind him. Despite having been in escape rooms before. His most recent one was a friend's birthday from back home. He should have been used to something like that, but regardless it made him jump.

A girl from his group wearing a dress with an earthy terracotta colour made her way past them after yelling at them for what he was certain was locking the door. He noticed as she read the paper on the wall and he did so himself. We are in a favourite place for bards,
and I can be found in a pile of shar… Before he finished reading it, the girl had grabbed a potion off of the table and threw it at the door. Noah backed away slowly trying to figure out what had just happened. “We probably did not need that one anyway?” He shrugged.

He moved over to the stage in the corner. If Noah knew anything it was Bards. It was his favorite class to play back home in Dungeons and Dragons. He thought about how that game would be forever changed for him now, being an actual wizard and all. Noah examined the lute, having never gotten to see one in real life before.

Louca had been intrigued by the Twisted Tavern’s event, figuring it sounded like an adventure, and that was something he was always up for. He had put his name down and then almost forgot to arrive on time. Timekeeping was not his strongest suit. He had had to rush to throw on his t-shirt, jeans and converse, his wand shoved into the back pocket of his jeans where it would remain until he inevitably leaned against something or went to sit down and was reminded with an uncomfortable feeling that that was where it was. But he had made it and was equally as shocked when the door locked with a very audible click.

He was waiting for something more to happen, expecting thrills and chills, but instead the thrill seemed to come from another student involved in the game as they shattered a potion bottle. Moving closer to the pile of shards, he pulled his wand out of his jeans pocket, casting reparo at the remains. “I mean it does mention a quick repair, but pretty sure that that potion might have been meant to drink. And I don’t have those skills yet, or at least not that I recall.”

Shrugging, Louca had taken a moment to decipher what the person had said prior to throwing the potion bottle and added “I mean I’d play a prank, but I didn’t do this one. I figured this was going to be more thrills and chills, but it seems like there’s more to it then that.”

She'd been mostly absent from school events this year. Between her parents splitting up, losing her sister, losing ger beloved pet rabbit, things were taking a toll. Not to mention that many of her friends were abysmally quiet. She'd not had much contact with anyone. Hence, why she was curious about this Ball. And this game.

She'd been put with absolute strangers. At first they had seemed competent, but that was all to change. She reserved judgement on most, but the girl with wild hair. She sighed, both inwardly and outwardly. "Are you stupid?" she hissed. "Of course shards didn't mean that!" She wanted to facepalm herself. Seriously, Beatrice was never going to get out with this lot. Thankfully some of the others also voiced concern for the potion. She nodded in agreeance. "I think you're right. We can always repair the potion, but it says a place for bards."

The girl turned around the room, surveying what was there and relatively untouched. "The lute and gramophone seems more like it." She wandered over to the gramophone, since the boy (introductions hadn't been made), had gone to check the lute. Once she reached the instrument, she swiveled on her feet, facing them for a quick moment. "I'm Beatrice, by the way. Fourth year Ravenclaw." She didn't know why she felt compelled to announce the last part. Perhaps to say that her age and house came with some wisdom. Something they were, apparently, in need of.

This group seemed to be off to a rather...violent start, with Oonagh picking up a purple potion and throwing it against the door, successfully shattering it. Oh well, surely they can find a way to break out of here without it. At least that seems to be the players' thoughts about it, thinking that if they really have to they can always just repair it right? Among the two people who would go examine the two music related objects in the room only one of them would find what seems to be a step in the right direction. Noah Wells, who went off in the direction of the lute, excited to see a medieval instrument like this right before his eyes. As he observes the instrument he would find tucked right behind it a pile of plain white shards. Perhaps the multiple Ravenclaw students in the room would find a use for them, or the thunderbird that was quick to deny the pranking allegations. Alas, hopefully Oonagh would soon lose the doubt that this was just an elaborate prank, the ball planners put quite some effort into setting this all up and would surely be disheartened at their credit be taken like this.

A fleeting attempt at social interaction was what Ari had signed up for in wanting to participate in this escape room. He had heard of these before but had never been in one. They seemed quite fun, and what could a Ravenclaw love more than a mental challenge?

The sound of his thick-soled combat boots echoed in the tavern along with the constant jingling of a belt chain and creasing of his leather jacket as he walked. He recognized the face of Beatrice, a fellow Ravenclaw in the same year as him. The other students in the group were younger students he was not well acquainted with, and one was from one of the visiting schools. He hoped that with enough teamwork, their minds could solve the riddles to get out of here. That teamwork, however, apparently including breaking things. Hopefully that wasn't an introduction of things to come from his teammates.

"Certainly creating more shards isn't the answer here. How careless..." He spoke more to himself than anyone as he watched one of the boys repair the broken potion bottle before anyone could get hurt. "I'm pretty sure the only one of you all I've seen before is Beatrice, so allow me to introduce myself as well. Ari Gwild, also a fourth year in Ravenclaw."

Ari brushed his hair out from his gaze and approached the other boy who seemed to be wrapped up in examining a lute. He knew those instruments to essentially be a more dated version of what modern culture knew as a guitar. "Bards are known for their musical prowess and storytelling. You seem very interested in that..." His words trailed off as he noticed the pile of shards where the lute had been placed. Very carefully, he picked the pieces up one by one, trying to avoid cutting his hands with the edges. Could this be what the riddle was referring to? There was only one way to find out.

After picking up all of the shards from their hiding place, he carried them over to one of the empty bar stools and set them on the surface. Then, he pulled out his wand and hoped his spell would work as he focused his attention. "Reparo!"

After that exciting beginning to the game everyone seems to have more or less chilled out a bit and got back on track of solving the riddle, hopefully Oonagh won't wreak more of the potions the ball planners made. Among the players Ari Gwild found the solution, true to the Ravenclaw name. He cast a mending spell that would surely make the broom racing team proud and fixed the item the shares made up, which was an almost plain white mug. The only thing making it distinct being the number "2" that is engraved on the side of it, the next clue was also found in the mug. If Ari or anyone else looked inside they would find not one but two pieces of paper, one of them said:
It appears your wit needs to be enhanced,
look for the potion where you entranced.

the other was quite a bit more confusing, instead of plain old english it looked to be written in some sort of code, on it said:

Louca was pleased when Ari he believed it was, was able to get them moving forward in the game. Though admittedly the potion clue was kind of confusing. But not near as confusing as that last one, what the heck was that even supposed to be? For someone who knew a lot of sleight of hand, codes and code breaking had never been his thing. Shrugging, he said "Well, let's take a chance." Reaching out to the green potion, the one that seemed to be the second in line, he was surprised when someone else's hand reached out. It was the rather violent person who had first broken a potion bottle, and had an accent that at times was difficult to discern.

Slapping at their hand, Louca snapped "I doubt we need another broken bottle. Someone needs to drink it and I offered first." Then it simply became a battle to try to keep this stranger from taking over what Louca had so clearly decided to do. He was the daring one and gosh darn it he would drink the potion no matter the consequences! Louca's hands rained slaps down, doing his best occasionally to reach out to the potion and grab it. After all, if he could drink the potion then it wouldn't matter what the other person wanted. It would be too late! He mostly stuck to the hands, but if a stray arm or wrist offered itself up, while at least it wasn't the face.

Noah watched as Ari approached the stage area. He noticed an older girl go over to examine the gramophone and introduce herself as Beatrice. Ari cast Reparo on the shards that Noah did not even realize were there. He was in awe of how quickly the older Ravenclaw solved the first clue. I guess that's why they are in Ravenclaw and I am not. Then, Noah came to the realization that he never introduced himself to the group. With all the starting chaos it was a bit overwhelming. He felt shy and apprehensive. Is it too late now to introduce myself? Noah thought to himself. He often would overthink social situations and would come off awkward. He went for it anyway. “Hi,..everyone, I’m Noah, first year Hufflepuff.” He was not sure if anyone would hear as they all now seemed to be focused on the next clue.

Noah felt out of his element a common theme this year. Being a muggle-born student definitely had its drawbacks and not being the brightest bulb did as well. “What does this gibberish mean? Are we supposed to drink the potions? We don't even know what they will do to us?” Noah questioned out loud. Before Noah could even process anymore, he glanced over at the remaining potions. An older boy went to reach for the green potion and so did the girl who shattered the first one. A slap fight ensued. Noah was not sure what to think. “There are a couple there, you both could each drink one?” Noah said in an attempt to calm the situation. Noah hated conflict and this slap fight made him anxious.
