Amethyst Jenalyn Castillo was excited ever since she had received the letter.
She was excited when she checked off the last item from her letter.
She was excited when she had finally packed her trunk.
She was even excited when, on the morning of 1 September, she had finally said goodbye to her parents, knowing she wouldn't see them till Christmas.
Perhaps it was merely a hope to escape her grandmother's tyranny.
But the dread of being away from home loomed over her once she had finally reached the station, alone with her Grandma. The young girl's parents had failed to accompany her; they had to rush to work. She counted a total of 3 months and 24 days of staying away from her parents, grandfather and even grandmother. Nothing looked too exciting anymore.
Amethyst pushed the trolley through the King's Cross, her hands cold and clammy against the handlebar. She felt nervous, and worse was the fact she could not say it out loud or she would have met with a lovely lecture from her dearest grandmother.
The trolley was even heavier than her, and it was hard to push it straight without tripping or trudging.
As if on cue, the young girl's right foot made contact with a stone, and she tripped, almost letting go of her trolley as it lightly collided with her grandmother. Amethyst Castillo went cold as her Grandmother turned around to give her a sharp disapproving look, "Keep your eyes ahead, young girl. Walk straight and don't trip. It is not even that hard. Try and keep your nose up". Amethyst could feel her face flush with embarrassment. She nodded quickly and straightened up. She looked around at the other children who were busily pushing their trolleys, laughing and bumping into each other while their parents helped them along. It seemed so carefree compared to her own experience.
Lost in her thoughts, she softly called out for her grandma before realising she was already walking forward. Pushing her trolley ahead quickly, she matched her grandma's pace, her heels making noise. "Grandma", she called out again, and her grandmother looked down at her, her lips pressing in a straight line. "Can you not make this noise, Amethyst. It is irritating and might as well be disturbing people around us.", she asked, which sounded more like an order.
Amethyst was quick to reply, shuffling her feet and holding her grandmother's palm to stop her from moving forward, "Why can't I do that, Grandma? Being silly? Other kids are doing it too, look at them."
"They are not Amethyst. "
"But what if one of them has Amethyst as their name too?'
"They are not Amethyst Jenalyn Castillo! Stop asking useless questions.", her grandmother replied, irritated but still never raising her voice.
"I do not understand Grandm-", Amethyst tried to continue.
"Just walk straight. Don’t bump into anyone with this trolley. You don’t want to send someone flying.", Jenalyn May Castillo replied, signalling the end to the conversation.
"Oh, I won't Grandma!", Amethyst mumbled, her voice tinged with a mixture of sullen frustration and the desire to roll her eyes. It wasn’t easy to keep quiet when everything felt so unfair.
The two of them soon reached the wall between platforms 9 and 10.
"So... I am supposed to make a run through this wall?", Amethyst whispered questioningly.
Her grandmother offered instructions, "Yes, dear, go inside calmly. Walk confidently, you don't need to run; just pace yourself."
Amethyst, however, misinterpreted the advice as her cue to sprint, or maybe the misinterpretation was intended. She charged toward the wall, her heart racing as she closed the distance.
With no time to think, she collided with the solid-looking brick, and for a split second, everything went dark.

𝓥iolence was buzzing. Not literally (yet), but it felt like her whole body was just one giant, buzzing spark. She was going to Hogwarts. Hogwarts.

Her trunk had been packed for weeks—okay, fine, it had been packed early, and then re-packed several times because she kept remembering things. Potions ingredients, her hairbrush, an emergency stash of chocolate frogs, her notebook full of random theories about magical creature ecosystems. Stuff she probably wouldn’t even need but needed to have. Her parents, Artemis and Drakon, had driven her to King’s Cross early. She had barely slept the night before, bouncing between excitement and nerves like a Snitch trapped in a jar. But her mum had braided her hair just the way she liked, and her dad had made her laugh the entire ride there by doing dramatic Hogwarts-themed voiceovers. They weren’t perfect, but they were hers, and they made everything feel just a little bit less scary.

“Got everything?” Artemis asked, brushing something off Vi’s shoulder, even though there was nothing there. Vi nodded. “Wand, scarf, snacks, secrets—check.” Drakon gave her a wink. “You ready to run through a brick wall?”

“Absolutely.”

She gripped the trolley and took a deep breath. Her heart was racing, but in a good way. The kind of rush she lived for. Vi didn’t hesitate. She didn’t walk slowly like the books said. She ran—not full speed, but enough to make people stare. Her scarf whipped behind her like some overly dramatic cape. And then—whoosh—she was through. She landed on the other side with a little stumble but kept upright, chest rising with excitement as she took in the Hogwarts Express sitting there, big and beautiful and real. She actually laughed, giddy and breathless.

Then, suddenly—

CRASH.

Something slammed into her back with enough force to send her stumbling forward into her trolley.

“What the—”

Vi turned around fast, hair slightly messed up, half an insult on her tongue—until she saw the girl who had just body-checked her.

A kid about her age was sitting on the ground, wide-eyed, hair flying everywhere, cheeks already red with embarrassment. Her trolley had skidded sideways, and she looked like she was trying to disappear into the platform bricks.

Vi blinked.

Then blinked again.

“Wow,” she said. “You really went for it.” Vi exhaled, shook her head slightly, and crouched down. “Here,” she said, offering her hand. “You okay? I’m Violence,” she added casually. “Yes, that’s really my name. And yes, I know it sounds like the start of a villain origin story.” She gave the girl a quick once-over. No blood. No broken bones. Just very, very flustered.

“You alright?” she asked again, more softly this time. “You hit me so hard I think I actually saw a flash of my past life.”

She smirked a little, but it wasn’t mean. Just teasing.

“Cool. First crash into another student—done,” Vi said, glancing at the Hogwarts Express. “You’re off to a dramatic start.”

She paused. “So… what’s your name? Or should I just keep calling you The Girl Who Tackled Me at Platform 9¾?”

Rash decisions are thrilling, and nobody knows it better than Amethyst.
Perhaps it was simply part of who she was, or perhaps it was the excitement of doing the exact opposite of what her tyrannical grandmother wanted, no matter how small the rebellion.

She crashed.
Quite literally.
Into the wall, into another person, and then ceremoniously onto the ground. For one dizzy second, Amethyst thought she was flying before her trolley rolled away without her. Her dark hair flew into her face, and embarrassment burnt bright across her cheeks as the thrill of recklessness quickly died.

The person she had crashed into crouched in front of her, offering her a hand. Amethyst stumbled over her words, managing a small, breathy "I am o-okay" in reply to the other girl's question.
Amy took her hand while the other girl continued talking. She couldn't help but admire her; how effortlessly cool the other girl seemed. Violence's introduction sounded rather funny, dramatic and yet admirable as Amethyst giggled, dusting off her skirt. Her own voice surprised her, as she collected herself before she could embarrass herself more.

"Really, Violence? Next I know, your surname is going to be something bloody." Amethyst tried to joke, breaking character. Amethyst never joked, but perhaps the company was simply too pleasant.

She smoothed down her hair as she affirmed again that she was alright to the other girl's question and giggled as Violence joked.

She liked her already.

"I am all in for the drama," Amy said, following Violence's gaze. "I am Amethyst by the way, Amethyst Jenalyn Castillo, although I am fine with you calling me 'The Girl who Tackled Me at Platform 93/4' " Embarrassment crept into her voice again near the end.
“Are you alright, though?” she added hurriedly, her ears turning pink.

It wasn't long before a stern voice disrupted the moment.
"Amethyst"
Her stomach dropped.
Jenalyn Castillo called out to her.

Amethyst had totally forgotten about the fact that she was here with her grandmother. She looked at her grandmother, walking towards them gracefully.

"I told you not to rush," her grandmother added. Amethyst looked between her new friend, whose friendship was yet unconfirmed but something the young girl was looking forward to, and her grandmother.

"I am fine, Grandma," Amethyst said calmly. "I saw you falling down," Jenalyn had said, her gaze piercing. The last thing Amy wanted was to be scolded and get embarrassed in front of the girl she found cool.

She wished, for once, really hard that the Earth would swallow her up.

Nothing of that sort, however, happened.
