Stage 36: Secrets in the Greenhouse

Stage 36: Secrets in the Greenhouse

You step carefully around the shards, scanning the cluttered tables and overturned pots. Someone’s been here.

A corner of the room reveals a makeshift bedroll—blankets stolen from the infirmary, bundled atop a pile of burlap sacks. Someone had been sleeping here recently. A half-eaten apple. A threadbare scarf. A broken teacup.

And something else: an empty glass vial with pink residue inside.

Some notes, you're probably unsure of who wrote them.
Weird weeds have been sprouting up all over the grounds. Ugly, dark plants with a bulbous, fleshy bloom that smells of rotten meat. They are mostly found in the Forbidden Forest as well as the grounds near the border of the Forbidden Forest. These plants have thick, deep roots and are considered to be an invasive plant.

Description: A pale stalk and cap with crimson pustules that could be best described as zit-like, that bleed when popped. The dark scarlet fluid that escapes these plants has a foul, rotten stench that most closely resembles rotted meat. Whatever these plants are, they are spreading. They appear to prefer shaded areas and remain close to the ground.

The house elves have been attending to the grounds the best they can and thus far there have been no reported injuries associated with these plants.

2023: Students assisted in a clean-up project where they assisted in the eradication of these mushrooms.

Findings:
- The plants can scream.
- The roots are very fibrous and thick
- Herbicide is ineffective
- A student ate some of these mushrooms and became very sick with gastrointestinal symptoms.
2024: The mushrooms thinned out and eventually disappeared. However, roots near Hogsmeade identified after a terrorist event suggest that the mushrooms might have a life-cycle.
Then—

Crunch.

Your breath catches.

From behind the greenhouse, just past the broken pane, the unmistakable sound of a footstep crushing glass. Slow. Deliberate.

Someone—or something—is approaching.

A shiver ran up her spine as she pushed herself as fast as she could into the greenhouse, pulling the door shut behind her. She took a few moments to simply catch her breath before looking around.

It was, honestly, a bit of a mess in here—kind of like someone had been living in here. Weird.

And it just got weirder: pink vials and notes. As a Ravenclaw and curious reader, she couldn't help looking them over. The plants described were like nothing she'd ever read about in Herbology.

Her eyes were near the bottom of the page when she heard a noise: broken glass. Ducking down, she'd take cover where she could while she tried to think of a plan.

Stage 36: Secrets in the Greenhouse
Mellani entered the greenhouse, looking around. It looked like someone had been there recently, which was suspicious, but as long as Mellani was getting some shelter away from the stupid doll, she didn't care.

After making sure the door was locked, and sliding a table against it just for precaution, Mell went to the window and shut it too, taking another table and keeping it against the window. She then settled on the bedroll and looked around a bit more carefully, noticing a pink vial and some notes.

Mellani started reading the notes about the weird plant. The plant seemed very similar to few of the mushrooms she had helped clean for the herbology teacher in the past. She had decided to get some more information about the plants later, but that later had never come.

Just then, Mellani heard footsteps and glass crunching from outside. Hopefully it was someone who had come to help her...

Stage 36: Secrets in the Greenhouse
The herbology lesson over Kafelé decided to explore the area in and around the greenhouse. As he entered he noticed signs of someone or something taking residence within. Tables haphazardly cluttered up the room. Shards of clay and ceramic pots littered the ground beneath his feet. Several pots were still intact but scattered and overturned, their contents long spilled.
As Kafelé approached the far corner of the room he noticed bedding. Some blankets atop a pile of burtlap. There appeared to be vials of some unkown pink liquid. Kafelé decided to secure a small amount in one of his glass vials with a cap on it. He could ask a professor about it later. As he was collecting a sample careful to wear protective gloves and use his pliers, he noticed some notes scattered about. As Kafelé read about these frightful plants he became intrigued. "Plants that scream and bleed. How curious..." he whispered. His silent monolog was cut short by the sudden sound of footsteps drawing near. A slow deliberate crunch as they walked ever closer. Kafelé wasn't sure where he should hide so he dashed for a table in the other corner of the room huddling behind the table as best he could. Wand at the ready, Kafelé wasn't the strongest wizard when it came to combat magic. But he knew a few spells that might allow him to escape if things got bad.
