Christmas morning had never felt so good. Robin stood at the cat food section, perusing her options of cat food. When she googled on her iPod back at home, it had stated the importance of the first ingredient labeled on the nutrition was some form of actual meat and not anything processed. Robin knew that she could ask the sweet grandma lady who offered her assistance when she first walked in, but Robin felt confident that she knew what she was doing. At least she knew what to do with a kitten from the normal world and not some super needy magical crap-dog that probably required more galleons than she could comprehend.
She knew that being a mom would be a difficult job - she didn't expect it to take her entire savings in galleons to be a successful one! Robin knew that it didn't matter. The moment she saw her sweet little Tabby, she knew she had to take her in. Robin had never had a pet cat; their family only having had a Frenchie pup once that had died when she was younger. She had always begged of course but it all seemed to have been for a lost cause.
Then Robin had met the kitten in the bush at the park. There was a park close to her house, less than a block down the street, that had an array of bushes on the side of a lined fence. There had always been a few stray cats that roamed the area, but none of them seemed too particularly interested in any human interaction. She didn't blame them - living on the streets has got to be a rough, scary place for anyone let alone a mere cat in a big, industrialized world.
Robin had to pass the rows of greenery to reach her favorite tire swing. When she did, she swore she heard a faint cry coming from one of the bushes. Robin, and her bleeding animal heart of course, couldn't help but investigate.
Laying on its back in the dirt, paw over its face and back squirming into the ground, was a small gray kitten. It had a few dark stripes along its bodice and a distinct "M" shape crowning the front of its face, which was soft, heart shaped, and absolutely adorable.
Robin immediately let out a squeak of surprise and plopped down to her knees in the dirt next to the kitten. Its eyes had never left hers the entire time, purrs trailing from its chest that were disproportionately loud for a cat of its size to make. Robin immediately cooed at the small thing, reaching a few fingers out to allow the kitten to sniff her hand.
It was immediately interested and friendly, bumping its face up against her fingers, tail vibrating in the air and the low rumble of delicate purrs gently massaging her fingertips. Robin knew she was an immediate goner for this cat- she always told her mum that once the right one came around, she was taking it to Hogwarts with her. She checked the vicinity for any potential littermates but after finding nothing, she grabbed the tiny cat and cradled it in her arms all the way home for a warm bath and some water.
Her mum's reaction was exactly what Robin expected - exasperated yet amused. Robin knew it was an act - her mother was just as kind as her, extending a hand to someone in a vulnerable position, and would have done the exact same in her position. Besides - it was Christmas Eve! The spirit of joy was in the air, and she wasn't going to tell Robin no when she so clearly was determined to add to the family. The agreement came down to Robin being the one to be responsible for the kitten, who after some searching, was determined to be a girl. She seemed to be a couple months old and in quite the exploring phase of her young life. Robin knew that they were going to get along wonderfully.
This had all been the night before. Robin had gotten permission to take the train to the city with her older brother Jeremiah and allow him to experience the wonder of Diagon Alley firsthand. To say that he had grown quite grumpy after seeing the world he was missing out on would be a complete understatement. He tried to stay in decent spirits for her, she could tell, but he couldn't ever be a part of this world no matter how much he wanted. It was the unfortunate reality of having no magic, but she took great joy in allowing him a glimpse of her life, even if it is just to see a few Pygmy Puffs and flying quidditch brooms.
Robin grabbed the perfect bag of food and added it to her bucket that already had a purple collar with a small silver bell on it and two ceramic bowls with blue striped around the edges. Her kitten, Tabitha, lay at home with her little sister, waiting for her to return with the things that will make her truly a part of the family. Robin was so excited to see the look on her classmates faces when she comes back from Christmas break with a kitten! It was a great thought to enjoy. With that, Robin grabbed Jeremiah by the collar and dragged him to the register to checkout. It was time to get home to her new cat.
