Detention A Pair of Socks PV Finished

Following the events in this thread: In the darkest hour of the night
"You two, follow me." Melisande demanded to the two first years after finishing her class. Her tone didn't allow for any other type of reaction or response, other than to do as she told. Even if they decided to give her any type of reply, she would ignore their whining, complaining, or any other way of addressing their impending doom, and would continue to walk through her classroom's door.

When the three of them arrived to their final destination, at the Abandoned Toilets, that abominable place, Melisande opened the door that sang on its hinges. There was nothing attractive about the place, yet inexplicably, it seemed that the place was quite busy and witnessed some of the most unimpressive activities and gave birth to the most doleful ideas. Meli lost count of how many times she saw her students leaving there with tasteless hair colors, and hairstyles that would only have been trendy during the Paleolithic Period.

"Common in." She told them and crossed the threshold into the chaos that awaited them. As soon as they peeked in, they would realise why their professor was looking at the scene with such a disdainful and disgusted expression on her pretty face. It looked as if a hurricane had passed through and left only destruction in its wake. Meli's first guess was that someone, or someones, had spent too much time practicing their summoning spells and conveniently forgotten to put everything back where it belonged afterwards. There were all sorts of objects and belongings scattered everywhere, some, due to their weight and lack of casting practice, had knocked into some of the sinks and broken them, leaving some small fountains of water gushing onto the floor.

"There was some luck today! That someone prepared the right, fitting task for you two!" Melisande started in a light-hearted way, turning towards Miss Moon and Mr. Armani, "One of your colleagues approached me after lunch," She continued, "Poor sweet soul." She muttered, her eyes darting over the dreary scene before turning back to her students, "And she told me that some of her belongings suddenly disappeared from her dorm. Especially a certain pair of socks that apparently have sentimental meaning to her." Go figure... Meli thought with sarcasm, "So, it is your noble duty today, to clean and repair all this...mess." She almost let slip a less polite word to describe all of that, certainly a word not fitting for a History of Magic professor.

With a wave of her wand, Meli summoned a few boxes that aligned close to the bathroom's wall, "Separate the items by type within these boxes, write down what you found and keep the lists attached to the respective box." She told them, "See? Easy! And you don't have to rush, apparently you don't mind staying late and spending some extra hours." Melisande gave them a bright, sarcastic smile, "I'll be back in a few hours, don't leave until I say you can leave. Your best friend will keep you company to make sure you do what I said." She finished pointing at the door. There, with his usual unfriendly face and his tall, muscular frame was Asdrúbal, "He will let me know if you attempt to leave here, and he will also let me know who did the work and who just stood watching." Melisande gave them a wink and turned to leave, "Oh! Right! I was forgetting, no magic allowed of course! Good luck!" She patted Asdrúbal's shoulder and left the two miscreants with their task and with her faithful stone guardian.

As per usual, History of Magic was as painfully dull as it possibly could be - at least for Novalie
Fortunately, Ollie was there to keep her company and listen patiently to her most recent discovery she’d made that very morning, which was that her dormmate was really hard to wake up and naturally, Novalie jumped at the chance to see how many marbles could be placed in said dormmate's mouth before they finally woke from their stupor.
“So turns out it’s sixteen.”, she chattered on to her friend who sat right beside her like alwayss, “And then she started choking. You know, we killed two birds with one stone there - she woke up before class and I got this extremely useful information. Oh! Speaking of which -”
The redhead leaned in as if they were sharing a secret. “How many marbles do you think you can fit in your mouth? I would say over twenty! You have, like -”, she leaned her head to the side and gazed at his face for a moment, “- you actually have a huge mouth! How is that even possible?”
Unfortunately, their intensely academic conversation was cut short when the professor concluded the class and told them to follow her. But the disappointment did not last for long. Unaware that she and Oliver would soon experience the consequences of being caught the previous night, Novalie leaped out of her seat with joy, “Yes!”
The girl tugged on Ollie’s sleeve, in excitement, “Come on, come on! Bet she’s showing us something really fun!”

Novalie did not waste a second thinking about why the professor picked only the two of them or why they stopped in front of the abandoned toilets, a place the Metamorph actually liked to visit sometimes. She had made friends with a few of the spiders there and often practiced her magic in front of the cracked mirrors.
But today things looked quite different. Belongings littered the floor, suggesting that someone had tried to use magic on them and accidentally smashed the sinks while doing so. The sight made Novalie giggle, because whoever did this must’ve had such a blast! She’d definitely have to try that too.
Lost in her own thoughts and wild imaginations, Novalie barely registered the professor’s voice until she dropped:
“So, it is your noble duty today, to clean and repair all this...mess.”

...Wait, what?
Novalie blinked, her eyes widening slightly as she realized what that meant.
Noble duty? They were supposed to clean this all up? Without magic? Why?
As the professor swept out of the room, Novalie’s gaze drifted to the stone gargoyle resting by the door and instantly her mood lifted.
“Ohhh, okay now I get it!”, she said, turning to the Slytherin boy, “She called him our best friend. That has to be code or something! Like, she’s giving us an excuse to hang out with him, you know, without openly playing favorites and all.”
Yeah! That totally had to be it. Why else would they get a punishment, right? They hadn’t done anything wrong ever!
And maybe there were even little treats hidden around here for them to give him, the mention of socks being a code in itself as well.

Without hesitation, Novalie dropped to her knees and began sorting the scattered items into boxes the Professor had previously summoned.
“What do gargoyles even eat anyway? Stones? But, like .. I don't eat another human because I am a human. It would be somewhat cannibalistic. So it has to be something else..”
The redhead picked through the chaos until her hands brushed over a familiar shape... marbles.
“Ah!”
She inspected it in her hands.
Was this a sign from the universe? A message that she was destined to test gargoyle marble capacity? That As... Asdrubi? - yes, that’s what Professor Melisande had called him - was the true master of marble storage?
With newfound purpose, Novalie gathered every marble she could find on the floor, stuffing them into the pockets of her robe until she was sure not a single one remained. Beaming, she marched over to the gargoyle.

Novalie looked up at him with the sunniest smile she could muster, not minding his very obvious lack of enthusiasm and began, “Best friend Asdrubi.” - clearly, that was the correct way to address him - “Do you like these?”
She held out as many marbles as her hands could carry,
“You can have them all!”, she declared, stretching her arms toward his stony face like she was offering a priceless treasure.

The day had gone by in a haze. Oliver looked forward and took down the notes on the board, he did all that he was expected to. Everything that he expected of himself. And everything his family told him to do. He was there, going through the practiced motions. He knew how to do it, he didn't even have to think about it. Who cared about if he was getting the information in his head, that's why he took the notes. They may have been a little messier, and Oliver may not have asked as many questions as he would normally. But he was there and doing the work.

Part of him hoped- prayed really -that it would all be forgotten. That when he steped into the History of Magic classroom everything would be just like it had last week, perfect. That the night before had been some kind of sick nightmare and Novalie Moon didn't ruin his life. Wishful thinking was all it was. He did the same thing he had done with his previous classes, taking the notes, half listing, his own thoughts overpowering the Professors voice. Novalie's was there to. Nagging in his ear about something he could care less about.

"Yeah.. right, sixteen." He repeated, not having retained a single word she had said. Sixteen what exactly? He didn't know. Didn't care. As he packed away his things in his bag, keeping them all aligned neatly. The inkwell in this pocket, parchment there, notes bound and placed here for later. Book in the back to support the parchment and help keep it from creasing. Everything had it's place. It brought little comfort here. And Novalie kept chattering on. So perhaps... yes perhaps it had all been a dream.

He looked at her, making eye contact. The first time he'd done so with anyone since that night. And he had heard her, listed to what she said. Marbles. She'd been talking about marbles. Oliver let out a breath, taking another deep one. He was fine. This was fine. And Novalie was just a chatty girl. "I'm unsure, and not keen to find out." He didn't know if he should take her comment on a large mouth as a complement or insult. But it didn't mater. The one thing that had, had been a bad dream. It would all be-

"You two, follow me." He was sure his heart stopped. Oliver gripped the strap of his bag tight, and dropped his eyes down again. Not a dream. Foolish to think that. That was Novalie's plan wasn't it? Oliver bit his lip. Body tense as a bow string. Again, he walked, going trough a simple task he knew how to do, and like most things, knew how to do well. And he followed Professor Lennox, next to Novalie. He could feel Novalie tug his shirt, and in a way he appreciated the small action. It kept him moving, despite knowing how to walk, his feet felt like led. His body heavy. 'deep breaths, keep moving. It won't be that bad. It can't be.'

The location of the detention was really dirty, a mess. One that would have sent his family into a fit. And maybe would have been the push to hire a house elf so they didn't have to clean it. He kept looking at the floor. Hardly taking it in, some sorry story about socks... or something. The Tl:Dr was Oliver and Novalie had to clean up someone else's mess, like they were maids, and presumably find a pair of socks to. Under the watchful eye of the gargoyle this had all been about. Asdrúbal. Were Oliver a more fearful man, he would have quivered under the watch of the stone guardian. And were he more stupid, he would have spit at it.

Fuck him. It was his fault over this, Novalie dragged his ass down past curfew to what? See it. 'Well, do you see it now Novalie? Hmm? Do you see how much trouble were into now Novalie? No shitty stories now Novalie?' He wasn't a mean person. He didn't think so. So he kept his thoughts about the silly girl to himself. And was sorting with a little more force then was ever truly needed. He ground his teeth when she tried to talk to him. Make conversation to have it feel like it was going faster or something like that.

"Sure. Yeah. Whatever." He shoved bits and bobs into the boxes being short with her. Oliver didn't know how he felt, angry. Disappointed. Upset. Sad. More disappointment. Anger then disappointment. And he was sure the sad was blending in there to. He used the sleave of his robes to wipe at his eyes. Less he cried here. In a place that was already 'crying' it's self. With the broken sink. How the hell did she want them to fix it without magic? They weren't plumbers.

No, Oliver was not. He was a student. A good one. He didn't deserve this. He should have pleaded his case, made Professor Lennox truly believe that he wasn't at fault. He had gone to 'protect' Novalie and her foolishness- but no. He was here. As he didn't lie. Didn't lash out. And didn't do anything to lessen the blow on him. He had just stood there and taken it. Like some sort of coward. He again wiped at his eyes, and walked over to the sink. And Oliver just stared. He didn't know what to do. And he didn't like that.
