VIADUCT

The Viaduct is one of the grandest entrances to Hogwarts Castle. Constructed of stone, it spans the deep gorge that opens out into the lake far below. It is a broad space --- enough for two giants to walk abreast --- with stone railings and enchanted lamps upon beautifully wrought iron poles to light the way.

In fact, apart from the first years who make their entrance via a boat ride from Hogsmeade and across the lake, second years and up all arrive from Hogsmeade Station via thestral drawn carriages. While not many students are aware of the thestrals, they will certainly be aware of the vista afforded by the Viaduct as their carriages lumber along the old road from Hogsmeade to Hogwarts and across the mighty stone bridge that leads to the castle itself.

From the Viaduct, one can look down into the gorge. On one side there is the Boathouse and the lake beyond. On the other, the valley narrows and becomes lost in woodlands. It is a perfect place to practice racing manoeuvres and speed trials as the mighty stone piers offer challenging obstacles. It is also not a bad place to watch fliers test their stamina and hone their skills!

At the far end of the Viaduct, the way leads out through Hogwarts grounds. Here one might find a path that leads down towards Hogsmeade and further adventures outside of the school. The Viaduct also affords access to some interesting places to hike and enjoy the natural world outside the castle walls.

Historically, the Viaduct played a key role in the Battle of Hogwarts. It was here that the forces of Lord Voldemort broke through the castle's magical defenses, crossed the gorge and poured into the castle itself. This area is notable as the location Headmistress McGonagal unleashed the enchanted suits of armour and statues that usually stand so immobile around the castle.

Whether up on the surface level or below in the shaded arcades that support the roadway, students might find here places to study or converse or plot various schemes and pranks!
