After This

The darkness still clouded her thoughts—a deep blanket that had protected her when it seemed like all was lost. And somehow, it seemed safer, easier to just stay there. Twirl amongst the wisps of smoke and watch her skirt drift into dreams where maybe it had all gone better. But eventually, you had to—

wake up.

Her head throbbed as her eyes blinked once and then twice before throwing themselves open to whatever the day looked like now. And it was bright—brighter than she recalled. And the dais had been replaced by wide rectangle of a room with all these orderly little beds—and her little body was in one.

Again.

And it was that thought that caused her to grasp at her head and then her stomach. Flipendo was turning out to be a spell she really, really did not like. That and the one with the stormcloud that the second years all know. And the one with the blindfold. Gee, the truth was that being a first year was hard, even if you studied and practiced. You'd just never keep up with a second year (or worse).

But that was perhaps the one thing that caused a small smile on her face, despite the injuries that were healing: she had, somehow, kept up with them, all three of them. She followed them into the end. And unlike Mylo, she had never ever given up, leaning on her creativity to keep her there as long she could. For that, she was proud.

Moving her head around, she saw a face come into focus, one she didn't recognize. "So, when can I get out of here?" she asked meekly. Hopefully, it would be soon. She hated lying here; it was so boring. There was training to do, sewing to finish, essays to write. So, she held her breath, fighting back the pain of it, hoping for a positive response.

After much thinking, Linda finally decided to sign up for the internship. What was she doing here anyway? She wasn't sure. But healing was her hobby and she wanted to learn more. So here she was. Hospital Wing was a place she was passing by occasionally. Just to see if she could be of help.

This day was nothing new. Or so she thought making her way yet again to the Hospital Wing. However, upon entering, she found a girl laying with some injuries. Deciding to help her, Linda took the paper to log her work.

Providing the necessary healing for injuries caused by Flipendo, Linda waited for the girl to wake up. There was nothing serious, so it was not requiring a lot of time to stay here. At this thought she heard the girl's voice asking her a question.

Don't worry. You will be good to go soon. She replied with a small smile. Does anything hurt? She asked, trying to think of any question. Not that often she got to deal with healing people. Although she wasn't as nervous as she could be. After all, she was here under the supervision. She wasn't alone. This meant she certainly wouldn't do anything wrong. You can call me Linda. I'm one of the interns here and third year Gryffindor. She continued in a small attempt to make this time less boring. Perhaps even less formal.

Her eyes seemed to flutter in and out. So, there was a haziness to the older girl's face and figure. She seemed to be a redhead, Linda she called herself and third year. Well, that was a good sign. Surely all the pain had been relatively rudimentary if a third year could handle it.

So, when she said she'd be able to go soon, Maisie let out a little sigh of relief. "Uh," she let out, unsure. Frankly, so far, she'd barely done anything other than open her eyes let alone observe her body. Digging her elbows into her pillow, she tried to sit up. "Ugh, my stomach," she said. The Flipendos had connected straight through the trunk of her chest so there was no wonder there was residual pain (and perhaps some bruising) there. She didn't dare look.

Instead, she just blinked as her head fell back against the pillow. This was the worst place to be, not matter how responsible it might be to be here rather than back in the common room. Her brown eyes looked around for something to do, but she feared the only thing to do in here was wait.

And Maisie wouldn't stand for that.

"Do you have my satchel?" she asked, not seeing it from this vantage point. It would have boring things inside like her Potions essay, but it would also have some cross-stitch she was working on. That'd pass the time. She'd put the bag to one side before the match began, but she'd hardly given it a thought after it was all over. Either Avis had grabbed it or someone would have brought it here.

And failing that: "Or do you have any books in here, Linda?" Not medical that was. Though somehow she didn't have her hopes up on that one.

Linda sighed. She'd also prefer to not spend more time here than it was necessary. Was it a good decision to join internship? She didn't know. She spent quite a long time thinking about it. At the end still choosing to join. Linda wondered if Reyna was anywhere close now. Time with her bestie would be certainly more interesting. The girl in front of her had pain in her stomach and it looked like there were some bruises. Luckily for both of them, it didn't require much time to heal.

She applied all the necessary treatment and looked at the girl again. It should be better soon. I'm sorry you have to wait here a bit more time. Linda spoke, her voice filled with kindness and understanding.

I didn't see it, I'm sorry. I just came a moment before you woke up. A satchel? She looked around, still not noticing it. Although it was possible that it was somewhere here. Someone could bring it when the girl came.

The next question was easier for Linda. She had some books with her. She intended to read something after a quick check here. Now, spending here a bit longer than she anticipated, Linda was certain she won't read anything after finishing here. I have some in my bag. Though I don't know whether you'd find anything interesting or not.

Maisie could only roll her eyes at the inevitable: "It should be better soon."

Uhuh.

"I'm sorry..."

Sure.

"...you have to wait here a bit more time."

Well, great.

With a breath, she sunk her back deeper into the sheets. She knew the older girl was trying to be nice from the way she spoke, but it didn't matter. Her cadence didn't change the truth: she was stuck here. And without her things apparently.

This sucked.

She stared up at the ceiling, trying to find anything remotely interesting about the patterning of the stonework up above.

There was nothing interesting.

But after a few painfully slow moments, there was a spark: this Linda had books. There had been no description of the books, no indication of what they were—if she had to guess at least one was a textbook—but no matter, no matter. There were books—an escape from the boredom of the hospital wing. "Okay, swell. What do you have?" she asked eagerly, trying to sit up a bit. The bruising around her midsection was still uncomfortable as she let out a groan, but she would push through it—just has she had on the piste. Blinking, she tried to look around for where they might be. Hopefully, Linda would bring them out fast. Fiction was best, but at this rate, she'd take anything.
