Not once since his first year started had Sebastian sent a letter to any of his parents, nor had he received any from home. Honestly, he barely knew how owls worked; how could he send a letter to his dad when he wasn’t even sure where he was? How would the owl find him? After a conversation about this with Eldred, he wondered if it even possible to send letters to ‘muggles’? Texting was so much easier, but his iphone had been practically dead since the moment he arrived in the castle, promising radio silence on both of their ends. Sebastian hadn’t dwelled on it, hadn’t even considered it a possibility until that morning. A completely random morning during breakfast, he received an unexpected letter from his mom among the rest of the owl delivery. He’d watched letters fly and land around him for months, but this was the first time he was among them. His mom of all people.

Shocked to see her elegant handwriting 𝒯𝑜 𝒮𝑒𝒷𝒶𝓈𝓉𝒾𝒶𝓃 𝒟𝓇𝒶𝓀𝑒, 𝒮𝑒𝓃𝒹𝑒𝓇: 𝒜𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝒸𝑒 𝑀𝒶𝓅𝓁𝑒𝓁𝑒𝒶𝒻, Sebastian had abandoned his breakfast, ripped the envelope open to read the contents with eyes wide as saucers. Of course he had some contact with his mom— they called once in a while, but this was so unexpected he almost missed the woman. The contents, while short, made him a bit emotional, in a good way; She congratulated him for starting his wizarding education(almost a year too late). While it wasn’t Beauxbatons where she had studied, she wished him good luck in all his classes and social endeavours and hoped Hogwarts could give him everything he’d wanted. Whatever that was– Fuck if he knew!

The writing was basic, yet more than what he could have ever hoped for. What really got him though, was the attached photo she had found in some old boxes and sent to him. It was a picture of her, as stunningly beautiful as ever, and his father, classically handsome, holding a tiny baby Sebastian between them on a cruise. This must have been just a short while before she left him, or maybe they already had broken up but they had booked a trip that would be a waste to miss. Whatever the context was; they looked happy. Like a normal family. Sebastian barely had any photos at all with his mother since she’d left so soon, though plenty of with his dad; This couldn’t have been a better gift.

Some may think this was the bare minimum coming from a parent, but Sebastian was touched by the thoughtful gesture. He’d wiped a stray tear, though nothing but from happiness. This is what led him here to the owlery; His first ever attempt at owl mail.

After breakfast he’d run up to his dorm to write a reply. Two letters shoved into one envelope in hopes that she might be able to give one to his dad. In the letter(s), he’d written mostly basic stuff about classes, the party he’d hosted a while back, visiting a pink tea shop in hogsmeade with his new friend Eldred— and also about how he’d ended up in the hospital wing after a gruesome fight(he might have exaggerated some for dramatic effect)--- and most importantly, how some random dude with an ugly haircut had punched him in his stomach the other day in the bathroom! Completely unprovoked! Sure, he’d said he would sue the barber if they let him walk out like that– but still: unprovoked! Could you fucking believe it?! Sebastian imagined his dad reading it and demanding they sue the guy and his whole family.

Yuki had thought and scribbled in her head so many times the letter she wanted to send to her parents. But nothing was suitable. She didn't know what to tell them, other than the fact that classes were going well, that she hadn't yet received a Troll for a grade in History—which was highly surprising.

The day before, she had written drafts, sitting on her bed in the dormitories, leaning over her parchments late into the night and trying to find the right words, the right ideas, what she should —or shouldn't— talk to her parents about. It was crazy, she usually had no problem talking to them, but it had been so long since she had seen them that she felt like she didn't know them anymore. There weren't even any problems between them, as far as she knew.

Except for the fact that their letters had become less frequent. For her, anyway. This morning in the Great Hall, when she approached her brother, Brian, to greet him, he was holding a personal letter from their parents in his hands. And what about her? Brian had tried to reassure her, saying she would probably receive one later, but she didn't have much hope.

She didn't blame them; it wasn't like her. But it did bother her slightly. The most notable thing they'd done so far was that they'd forgotten to send her an owl for her birthday a month earlier. A week late, she thought sulkily. They'd apologized. But no gift. Just a happy birthday written in capital letters, in her mother's neat handwriting. And her father's smeared ink signature.
At least it had made her smile.

So this morning she went to the owlery with the goal of checking on her parents and reminding them of her existence. Well, she was their daughter after all. She summarized in her head what she should write—she would do it right there. The classes, the grades... Her favorite places, what else? Should she talk about the teachers? Or her schedule? Oh well...

When she arrived at the owlery, however, she found inspiration and knew what she was going to talk to her parents about. Or rather, who.

"Well, I'm feeling like I've seen it all before," she said with a smile when Sebastian Drake turned to look at her.

Okay, maybe the reason I’m not sending owl mail is because it stinks! Sebastian thought with a scrunched nose, slightly overwhelmed and disgusted by the sudden distinct smell of feathers and other less pleasant things as he entered the owlery. He didn’t know what he’d expected from a tiny room filled with birds— but maybe he’d hoped there would be some magic to keep them from shitting all over the place. Or maybe he’d thought these magical owls would be more clean than muggle owls, though he supposed they were all the same. Clearly, magic wasn’t a solution for bird poop. What a disappointment…

One barn owl was resting close by, but when he approached it, the owl took off with a hoot. Sebastian shrieked, barely dodging being slapped with a flapping wing during its departure. Ugh. How rude!

Carefully navigating the owlery like he was afraid of getting contaminated by something if he touched anything, Sebastian tried to clock down an owl to give his letter. Most of them were preening and hooting on a bar further up in the ceiling, which meant he had to climb the narrow little stairwell to reach them. Why did it have to be so hard to send a letter?

A voice behind him distracted him from his sulking. Turning around he was met by a familiar face. The only Slytherin this far that wasn’t a complete bitch to him. “Oh, hi Yuki!” He grinned, tone cheerful and without any signs of his previous suffering at the wings of owls and poop. While his memory wasn’t great in general, unless someone had wronged him, he obviously remembered her from the greenhouses a few weeks back. Whether it was her adorable name, her love for sunflowers or her sweet face, he didn’t know. Funny enough, he’d thought about her the other day and now they ran into each other! It must be fate– if Sebastian had believed in something like that.

“I’m trying to send a letter to my mom but these owls make it so difficult!” He sighed, glaring up at the birds in annoyance. It was mostly due to the dirt. The owl didn’t give a shit, tilting their heads and hooting tauntingly at him. He glanced back at Yuki again. “Are you also here to send a letter?” Maybe a stupid question, but he never said he was smart!

Yuki stepped forward from the Griffin and wrinkled her nose as the scent of the owlery caught her. Nonetheless, she continued to smile at her friend .

They had met at the greenhouses earlier that month, and she had good memories of their conversation and Sebastian's presence.

They had exchanged like everything was normal. At that moment, he was trying to retrieve a wilted peony. He had given it to a close friend, but this one had not taken care of it and had returned it to Sebastian. The story had seemed strange to Yuki but she'd said nothing. She was still curious to know what had happened that day but she was not the type to rummage through other people's things. She laughed slightly when Sebastian asked her if she had come to write a letter, unbothered by the strangeness of the sentence itself, and replied ironically.

"Mm, no, I came to kidnap an owl", she said, keeping a straight face as much as possible, then she smiled before rolling her eyes and responding in a amused tone, "yes I'm here to write a letter. What about you? Did you receive anything?"

Her last sentence was slightly humorless, unintentionally. Yes, she had come to write a letter, but not to reply to one she received this morning. No, she was NOT angry with her parents. Not at all.

Well, maybe a little.

In fact, she hadn't even replied to their belated birthday letter, she was so offended at the time. Okay, better late than never, but still, her BIRTHDAY?
She didn't understand. They usually told her everything, and when they ignoring her like that, it was because they were hiding something from her.
They'd done this once when she was a kid. She'd asked them over and over if they could go to that famous amusement park all her friends had gone to. They'd spent two weeks avoiding her and whispering behind her back. And the next week, they were all together as a family at her much-talked-about amusement park.

She might find out more during the next vacation when she got home.
By the way, even Brian —her brother— was acting strange these days and seemed preoccupied with things other than his studies. She would confront him too. Granted, she loved her family, except when they ignored her.

The ironic comment of kidnapping an owl was pretty funny, realizing how dumb it must sound to ask if she was here to send a letter. That’s was the main reason anyone would be here, he thought now. Sebastian grinned and shrugged like he was clueless to owlery customs. ”Well, you never know. This is only the second time I’m here.” It could have been a popular hang out spot for all he knew, though doubtful considering the smell.

Yuki bounced the question back to him and he visibly lit up thinking about the letter from his mom, oblivious to the humorless tone in her voice or how his words might be pushing the knife in deeper. He of course didn’t know about her reasons for sending a letter or her family dynamics.

”I did! I received a letter from my mom this morning! It was the first time she’s sent me one— the first letter from home since I got here, actually.” Sebastian blurted out in excitement before he could stop himself. This being the first letter in almost a year probably sounded a bit sad, so he clarified, calmer: ”My dad is a muggle.” Assuming Yuki knew that there might be limits to communicating with muggles through owl. At least that’s what he believed. It was alright though, he was just happy he got something.

Reaching for the photo inside his robes, he walked over to the girl and held it out to showcase it like a precious prize. It was, to him, despite probably being nothing special to her. ”She even send an old photograph that I haven’t seen before. I have no photos with her, so I was really surprised.” And happy.

After his rant about his mom and dad, Sebastian glanced at the Slytherin girl curiously. ”Anyway, who are you writing to?”

Sebastian chuckled at the irony of the situation, making Yuki smile a little wider.

— "The second time then... I think for me too."

Her smile faded slightly, but she straightened up and turned her back on Sebastian, taking out her parchments and placing them on the table.

God, what was happening to her? She wasn't one to feel sorry for herself, much less show it to those close to her. She didn't want her new friend to see her in a weak position. But she was tired and didn't want to force a smile, so she kept her back to him.
Still, she admitted that at the sight of the Griffin, her shoulders had relaxed slightly. She actually wanted to talk to him about it. But then again, what would he think? And why did she care?

She was genuinely happy to hear that her friend had received the first letter from his mother since arriving at Hogwarts. She felt a pang in her heart for him and selfish. He had waited much longer than she had, and she suspected he didn't have an easy relationship with his mother.

— "I'm so happy for you, Sebastian. But... without wanting to sound indiscreet or rude, why didn't she write to you sooner?"

Usually she didn't allow herself to ask personal questions, but this seemed important to her and she felt close to Sebastian. If he didn't want to answer, it didn't matter, she would understand. He approached her and she leaned over his shoulder to look at the photograph her mother had sent.

She deduced that the couple standing there were Sebastian's parents. His mother was as beautiful as she had imagined, and his father just as handsome. As for Sebastian... He was an adorable child! She smiled, slightly teasing.

— "Oh, what a beautiful baby".

She found it sad to learn that he had never had any photos of his mother, but she didn't mention it. One day she would know more. She turned her head and looked away when Sebastian asked her who she was planning to write to.

— "My parents, actually. I have... things to tell them".

Yes, time would do things.

Seb smiled at Yuki, even if the news about his lack of letters might have sounded sad speaking about it. He was so used to it that it didn't cross his mind to be bothered. "Not rude at all, I'm just not in much contact with her." Sebastian answered in his usual bubbly cheer, like he didn't have a care in the world. Well, when he wasn't insulted by evil Gryffindor girls, he didn't. Then added to clarify, "she lives in another country." His expression turned thoughtful. "France? Maybe? I just know that she went to Beauxbatons at some point in her life." Considering how little he knew about the woman, including the half-breed heritage that was still unbeknownst to him, that was a lot.

The compliment, albeit teasing, made him preen. Of course he was a beautiful baby. "But hopefully more beautiful now." Sebastian said, glancing at the pretty brunette beside him with a charming smile. While he did love himself, he was of course not shy to compliments others. "Too bad you didn't receive a baby picture too. I'm sure you were a super pretty baby." No, he obviously did not consider that the reminder might hit a little too close to home, given the reason she was also in the owlery today.

Yuki did have things to write to her parents however, and Seb glanced at her curiously when she turned her head away. It seemed like she might not be very eager to talk about it, but Seb was not the best person at reading the room. "Oh, I'm sure they will be excited to get a letter. What are you going to tell them?"

Yuki was relieved, at least that's what she felt, when she saw that Sebastian didn't seem to be affected that much by the few letters his mother sent him. Good for him. However, she quickly frowned.

— "Have you ever asked about your mother? I mean, you don't seem to know much about her.... Well, that said, Beauxbatons seems like a good school," she changed the subject, looking thoughtful.

Sebastian looked rather proud at the girl's mocking compliment, without even saying she was wrong. Yuki rolled her eyes, smiling in spite of herself when she heard the comment he added and didn't respond when he gave her a charming smile —it didn't work on her. She nevertheless smiled back when he returned the comment.

— "Well, of course I was. I guess these photos are way too precious to send by owl."

Sebastian seemed to understand that Yuki didn't want to talk more than that about her parents but still asked her, more or less cautiously, what she planned to tell them. She turned around quietly. In fact, she was sure she could start to trust Sebastian. So, after a last moment of hesitation she answered him.

— "Well, it's a bit complicated to explain. But I will somehow confront them. They... My parents have been acting very strange for the past few months. Like, their letters got spaced out. They are vague in the few I receive. As if they were avoiding real discussion. They even forgot my birthday..."

She said all that at once, herself not very sure that Sebastian heard everything.
But in fact, she felt relieved to have finally spoken about it.

Sebastian looked sheepish. Has he ever tried to ask questions about his mother? Not really… They were always so busy when they met up! And their phone calls were always short and mostly revolved around Sebastian, his life in England and what he was doing. She never complained or tried to talk about herself, so whe must not mind it? Damn, now he felt kind of bad when Yuki put it like that.

“... No… But we're always so busy! When we do meet it’s like running a marathon, just more fun,” he hated running unless it was around a mall. “I guess I haven't thought about it.” Seb admitted, still feeling a bit guilty. Sincerely, he looked at Yuki and wondered, “Does that make me a terrible son?” He could take it if she called him a dumbass. Things rarely got to him, except when he was called ugly like a troll by some gryffindor bitch. Stemmed in jealousy no doubt. To call him ugly was criminal.

He was happy to talk about something else, namely why Yuki was writing to her parents. Seb hadn't expected an honest response but was pleasantly surprised she decided to trust him with the information. Though what she said was not so pleasant. Kind of sad, judging by her energy. “They forgot your birthday?!” He barked, flabbergasted. If his dad forgot his (he could give his mother some slack since she was never around), he would have sulked for weeks. Or more likely just thrown a fit. “Then you should definitely confront them. That's such an important day.” The boy gave Yuki a sympathetic smile.

“When was it? Maybe we could celebrate somehow, to make up for it.”
