Sebastian arrived late, per routine, to the study room the following Tuesday after his party the other week. When he thought things couldn't bring him down after kissing several girls, Monday arrived and served him a shit sandwich of homework and a group project. Which actually was a good thing for once, since Sebastian probably might have failed this subject if he couldn't piggyback on someone else's efforts. He couldn't even remember what subject they were writing about, just that he'd been paired up with Syrah Vintera, a Slytherin girl that he met at his party. Sebastian actually thought it was a good pairing, thinking they were friendly now when they'd shared saliva and all, but it was apparently not the case.

When Sebastian had smiled at her and made an effort to small talk, trying to be relatable--- they were like, friends now, weren't they? Syrah had all but acted as if she had no idea who he was, coldly demanding him to show up to study at one o'clock the next day before turning on her heel, sparing him no second glance.

Wow, harsh. He'd thought, startled before he'd rolled his eyes and turning to chat with girls that actually were happy to see him.

That was yesterday, though. Today was a new day, and maybe she would be in a better mood. He wouldn't let the other days mishap deter him, she could only act indifferent for so long. Besides, they were doing this project now and she was his only hope. Okay, not really; He would have found someone else to help him otherwise, but today she was his only hope!

He glanced around the room, spotting a certain blonde ice queen bent over some mysteriously looking books. Could be their study material for all he knew. Sebastian approached cheerfully, not reading the room at all, and sat down on the opposite side of her. "Hey darling." Maybe he had a death wish. "What are we studying for again?" He asked in obliviousness, grinning at her from across the table.

Syrah didn’t bother looking up when Sebastian arrived. She heard him coming from the moment he walked through the door—his footsteps were annoyingly casual, as if he had all the time in the world. He was late, of course. She had expected as much. He was the type who thought charm and a smile could get him anywhere.

She flipped another page, her eyes scanning the text. Defense Against the Dark Arts, focusing on counter-curses and protective enchantments.

Her fingers twitched, resisting the urge to hex the smug look off his face. It was bad enough that she’d been forced to go to his stupid party because of that idiotic dare. Just thinking about it made her stomach churn. She could still see her brother's words on the letter, taunting her that she was “too chicken” to show up .

She’d gone, of course. But she regretted it the moment she’d stepped through the door. And then she’d ended up kissing him. She felt her skin crawl at the memory. It was the one time she’d let her guard down, and she hated herself for it. Hated that she’d given him the satisfaction.

And now she was stuck with him as her partner for this stupid project.

Syrah forced herself to keep her composure as he threw himself into the seat across from her, far too close for comfort. She kept her eyes on the book in front of her, refusing to acknowledge him as he greeted her with that sickeningly casual “Hey darling.”

She took a slow breath, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. If he called her that one more time...

When he finally asked, “What are we studying for again?” Syrah looked up, her blue eyes icy and unamused. “Defense Against the Dark Arts,” she said, her tone clipped. “Counter-curses and dark protective enchantments.” Her eyes flicked over him, her expression one of barely concealed disdain. “Maybe if you weren’t too busy kissing half of Hogwarts, you’d actually remember the subjects you’re failing.”

Of course, he didn’t remember. Why would he? That would require him to think about something other than himself for more than two seconds.

Syrah leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, her eyes narrowing at him. “I’m not doing all the work. If you want to pass, you’ll contribute.” She let her words linger, a clear challenge. He could flash that stupid grin all he wanted, but she wasn’t one of his brainless admirers. If he thought he could charm his way into her good graces, he was in for a rude awakening.

To Sebastian, Syrah looked like she enjoyed torturing kittens for fun, so he wasn't even bothered by her obvious disinterest in working with him. Or even seeing him breathe in her presence. In the ideal world, she would of course adore him like everyone else he met, but he already knew what he had to work with. And that was a difficult bitch. Either way, it didn't stop him from smiling at her, unbothered and unfazed by her toxic glare that could have cut him with a knife. That was possible magic from all he knew, as a first year and grown up practically fully muggle with no prior knowledge of magic. Oh god, that would actually be pretty terrible, wouldn't it? His smile faltered just a bit at the thought, warily. He hoped knives wouldn't pop out of her eyes. But it remained just that: a glare.

Then these next words escaped her lips, and he was no longer amused. “Maybe if you weren’t too busy kissing half of Hogwarts, you’d actually remember the subjects you’re failing.”

Sebastian balked at that very incorrect assumption, his smile twisting into something reminiscent of a scowl. Excuse me? Even then when he tried to look mad, he still looked as harmless and sweet as a summers' child, but the intent was there. "I'm not failing," he retorted, with an attitude of disbelief. "That's why you're here." Partly, anyway. "And I'm not kissing half of Hogwarts! There was only--- what, ten people there?" He'd honestly forgotten the details of that night, but what he hadn't forgotten was that Syrah had been one of them. Even better, she'd been the one to spin the bottle on him, though it was just random.

Still, he turned sly when he reminded her, "You were one of them, remember?" Two could play that fucking game. "... I do." The way he said it sounded too indecent to match the sweet look in his doey eyes, knowing very well what he was insinuating.

Syrah barely reacted. If she had any thoughts about his exaggerated outrage, they didn’t show. She simply blinked at him, slow and unimpressed, as if she were waiting for him to finish his little performance.

His sly reminder didn’t faze her either. If anything, she just looked bored.

“I remember,” she said flatly. “I also remember wanting to disappear immediately after.”

Her tone was even, quiet, and void of embarrassment—just an observation, like commenting on the weather. If he was hoping for some flustered reaction, he’d be disappointed.

She didn’t care. Not about the bottle, not about whatever assumptions he had, and certainly not about his ridiculous attempt to rattle her.

She turned back to the parchment in front of her, apparently already done with the conversation. “You’re still wrong, by the way,” she added, dipping her quill into ink. “I’m not here because you’re failing. I’m here because the professor asked me to be. If it were up to me, I’d be somewhere else.”

It wasn’t even cruel, just honest. Working with Sebastian wasn’t the worst fate imaginable, but she wouldn’t have volunteered.

She started writing, her script sharp and neat, as if this entire exchange hadn’t happened. “If you’re done being dramatic,” she murmured, not looking up, “we should start.”

She flipped a page in the book before her, gaze already moving on.

“Then why were you even there, honey?” Sebastian followed up sweetly, arms folded over the table as he leaned closer with an expectant look on his face. It was a fair question, since no one had forced her to be there. And the fact that kissing was the main, if not only, activity had been well established from the start. He didn’t buy her void-of-any-emotion persona. There had to be something more behind those icy eyes… Sebastian was determined to figure out what.

Syrah could insult him as much as she wanted— few things actually fazed him. Playing at his intelligence was not one of those things. Sebastian had never claimed to be clever, nor did he really think it was particularly important. His future plans mostly revolved around becoming a trophy husband, ideally one who never had to work a day in his life—at least not at a job where the revenue didn’t go straight into his own pocket. Ordinary business establishments weren’t for him. Actually, he couldn’t imagine anything worse than slaving for a boss for a fraction of the money. No, if he was going to work, it was going to be his own business.

“I’m not failing!” He reminded her again, more aggregated this time. “You think I want to be here? I would currently be at a spa getting a deep tissue massage if I were to choose.” Though he added curiously in an attempt to get to know her, after a moment of silence: “And where would that be?” Where she would rather be, that was.

The girl began scribbling something on a piece of parchment, seemingly fed up with conversing with him. Sebastian sighed and reluctantly shoved a book towards him to read. Defense Against the Dark Arts– Counter-curses and protective enchantments. One skim read through the first page and he could conclude that it was heavy reading. He sighed, fucking great!

Syrah’s hand moved with practiced precision, the quill scraping against the parchment as she ignored Sebastian’s prying eyes. She didn’t owe him any explanations. No, that wasn’t how she worked. Her reasons for being at that idiotic kissing party were irrelevant. He didn’t need to know about her brother's silly dare or the damn journal she was desperate to get her hands on. Her motives were her own—simple as that.

Still, Sebastian pressed on, and it grated on her nerves like nails on a chalkboard. The silence between them stretched out, but he didn't seem to take the hint.

She could feel his gaze, eager and expectant. Where would you rather be? he had asked. She almost scoffed. As if he could possibly understand where she would rather be.

The words formed in her mind but didn't escape her lips. The forest.

Not just any forest. The one near the manor in Inverness.

She'd spent countless hours there. The solitude, the ancient trees, the smell of fresh earth and moss—the peace she found among the wild things, where no one bothered her, where she could simply exist without the weight of anyone’s expectations. It was where she felt most like herself.

And, of course, Merlot. Merlot didn’t need words. He was always there, his sharp eyes watching over her, never judging, never asking. Just there, in the most comforting of ways. . No questions, no expectations. Just a bird with a wicked intelligence in his eyes, who would follow her around the forest, flapping his wings with the grace of a phantom.

The thought of him settled Syrah’s nerves, her usual icy calm turning into something a little softer. It was strange, how such a simple thing could have that effect on her.

A small, soft smile crept onto Syrah's lips as she imagined him, a rare expression that seemed almost foreign on her usually stoic face. She pushed the smile down quickly, unsure why she let herself feel even a flicker of warmth at the thought of him.

Her eyes flickered up at Sebastian, but she was careful not to let him see her brief moment of vulnerability. She focused on the parchment instead. "Keep reading," she muttered, her blue gray eyes cold again on him.

A strange look glazed across Syrah's eyes at his question. It was the most emotion he’d seen on her face this far, that wasn’t pure despise. So far gone in her mind that she didn’t even seem to notice him watching her enough to glare at him. He’d clearly hit some kind of spot, though it was difficult to tell exactly what she was thinking. Didn’t make him any less curious, though.

Sebastian leaned forward, expecting her to fill her in when she finally snapped back from it, but she just gave him an empty look, as if she hadn’t just been transferred back from dream land, and told him to ‘keep reading’. He sighed, glaring at her and her dismissive tone, flipping the page in the boring book.

“Fine,” he muttered, trying to focus on the text without his eyes glazing over in boredom.

It was really fucking difficult. He nearly snoozed a few times, quickly wiping the drool out of the corners of his mouth before anyone noticed. Hopefully.

Not sure how long it had been, but after he’d been rereading the same paragraph a thousand times and still not comprehending the words, he groaned loudly, running his hands through his hair and gripping it lightly. Not too hard, since he didn’t want to accidentally rip it. “It’s so fucking BORING! I hate DADA!” On the contrary to certain beliefs, Sebastian had some skills. Not many, but he was, somehow, getting straight O’s in charms, Transfiguration and herbology. The difference in this case was that those subjects were much more hands on. Reading was the fucking worst! He couldn’t focus.

“How the fuck do you do this? Can't we do something fun instead? Maybe you can finally tell me what you were reminiscing about before?” Futile attempt, probably, but it was way more interesting than this!

Syrah let out a slow, dramatic sigh, dragging her eyes up from her parchment as if Sebastian’s mere existence was the greatest burden ever placed upon her. She studied him for a moment, slumped over his book like a dying man, and clicked her tongue.

"You act as though I care about your struggles," she remarked flatly, not even sparing him a glance. "I don't."

"I hate DADA!”

Defense Against the Dark Arts was Syrah's favorite subject, and she had no intention of letting some lazy, unfocused distraction keep her from her work.

She ignored him at first, answering only with the soft scratch of ink against parchment. It was almost laughable how easily frustrated he got—like a child throwing a tantrum over homework.

She barely suppressed a smirk as he groaned again, dragging a hand down his face. “Oh, come on, DADA is useful. What’s your plan if you ever get attacked? Bat your pretty little eyelashes and hope the Dark Lord is in the mood to negotiate?” She rested her chin in her palm, lips curving slightly. “Actually… knowing you, that might work.”

“How the fuck do you do this?"

She tapped her quill against the table, watching him like one would observe a particularly dimwitted Kneazle trying to chase its own tail. “Well, first, I open a book. Then, I read the words inside it. But I understand that might be a bit too advanced for you.” Her lips twitched as she feigned deep sympathy. “Tell me, Sebastian,do the words wriggle on the page when you try to read them? Do they personally offend you?” She gasped in mock horror. “Are they… mean to you?”

"Maybe you can finally tell me what you were reminiscing about before?” He asked.

Syrah let out a short, dry laugh, shaking her head. “Oh, you’re still on that? How persistent. I’d almost be flattered if I didn’t know it was just because you’re trying to avoid studying.” She twirled her quill between her fingers, considering him for a moment before sighing dramatically

He opened his mouth to speak when Syrah asked how he planned on protecting himself without DADA, but it quickly turned into a smug smirk when she immediately followed up that batting his lashes would probably work for him.

“Of course it would work, have you seen me?” He flashed her his iconic charming smile to prove the point. He didn’t at all care if all he received was a dry glare, that was her default expression anyway. “Though I have a hard time imagining anyone attacking me.” The boy was essentially harmless, only a dumbass would be hellbent on killing him when there were probably way more threatening people to focus on— and most of all, too pretty to die!

Not that Syrah was aware, but Sebastian had never in his whole life had to lift a finger. Ever! His charm got him everything he wanted, including personal bodyguards anytime his comfort or security was challenged. It was quite luxurious to be him.

“I might be taken as a hostage or slave though…” Sebastian considered this like it was legitimately a plausible outcome that might happen. Well, if they ever were attacked by a dark lord. And why did that actually sound pretty hot? If, of course, the dark lord in question wasn’t an ugly old man. Obviously.

The topic returned to reading, and when she suggested that he might be dyslexic, Sebastian scoffed. “I’m not dyslexic. Reading is just boring.” Then he actually paused to consider it. Deeply. So deeply it reflected in his face as he pondered to himself. Was he dyslexic? He didn’t read much to begin with, but maybe there was a reason for that? Well, even if he was, that didn’t make their study session any less terrible. What did, however, was try to pry for more interesting information.

Resting his chin in the palm of his hand, he gazed at the girl with a smile. “You should be flattered. I don’t ask everyone questions about themselves.” In general, he was not very interested in people unless it revolved around him.

Syrah gave him a slow, unimpressed blink. “Wow, I’m honored” she said flatly, tone so dry it could’ve turned to dust. The corners of her lips curled up just slightly, though—more in amusement at how absurdly self-absorbed he was than anything else. Sebastian was ridiculous. It was almost impressive.

She shifted in her seat, stretching out her legs beneath the table, arms still lazily crossed. “If you ever do end up taken hostage, I doubt it’ll be because you’re a threat,” she mused, tilting her head as if seriously considering it. “More likely some poor idiot just couldn’t stand the idea of being without you.” Her tone made it unclear whether she meant this as flattery or an insult. It was intentional.

Her gaze flickered toward his book again, unimpressed with his complete lack of effort. "And of course you think reading’s boring. No instant gratification for that head of yours." She exhaled sharply, something close to a laugh. “Bet if they printed books with a mirror on every page, you’d be the biggest reader in Hogwarts.”

She was probably pushing it, but she doubted Sebastian had the self-awareness to be offended. Besides, he clearly liked the attention, even if it came in the form of insults.

Not that she minded. He was a distraction, at the very least. And in this miserable group project, she supposed that was better than nothing.
