february 24th, 2025 monday, after classwc: 400ish dhampir | terrible presenceinteracting with: @Aurelia Valentine mentioning: @Emily ShephardTransfiguration had just finished and Scout was at an all-time high in her positivity. The week she had spent at Beauxbatons had really helped her mental health, surprisingly. Instead of being worried about her negative image of herself, she had spent the time in arms with the group in her cabin, helping Casey piece together some of his brother's story. It was nice to not worry about herself for once. Even having to deal with two McCoire's at once wasn't too bad, all things considered.
She only caught a glimpse of Zyair once, though, and that didn't really make her feel any better about the situation at hand with him. But that was something she didn't need to focus on just yet. She had been way more concerned with the letter Emi had written her, but her friend seemed to be okay for now. Not focusing on her own problems was really helping her not deal with them. That couldn't be healthy, but Scout wasn't too worried.
Her bag was slung over her shoulder, and she stopped for a moment to sit on one of the benches in the corridors, tossing it on the other end. Emily's class didn't end for a little while longer, and there was nobody else she really wanted to bother. It was still just a little too cold to go outside and wait, so she made the decision to prop her feet up and wait around for her friends class to end. Or maybe she would get hungry early and sneak into the kitchens to grab a snack. That sounded fun!
"Huh? Oh, hey."
It's only ten or so seconds of her sitting with her legs crossed when a girl approaches her, a pretty wild mane of black hair. Scout quickly pulls her bag off the bench, assuming the girl wanted to sit as well. Cool, cool, she doesn't actually recognize the student, but she's wearing a Hufflepuff tie and badge so it's a safe bet that she's in Hufflepuff. Even though Scout's met a fair share of them before, Hufflepuff had a lot of students... and she really only knew those her age, Eugenia and Emily coming to mind immediately, but she knew Tesla, too.
She waves a bit awkwardly, smiling at the girl. She is not going away, is she?

It would be such a big, fat lie if Aurelia denied the fact that Professor Argento Perceval-Phelan is her favourite professor in all of Hogwarts. His teaching style, compared to other professors, had been so different; a whimsy in his nature combined with remarkable strictness earned exemplary results from his students—in her opinion, anyway. Although her preference in Transfigurations—a second favourite subject of hers, just second to Potions—might have influenced her impression of the professor, the fact that he looked down upon tardiness and held deadlines in high regard, plus squeezing in the difficulty of his assigned homework, challenges Aurelia's capabilities. She deems herself, of course, as diligent as she could be. But this subject and his grading system push her to be better as an academic student the most. With her long, bushy curls noticeable from miles away, the raven-haired badger could be seen standing in the Fifth Floor corridors, scrolls of parchments she is hugging against her chest, her enchanted leather satchel dangling and strapped on her shoulder. She is humming a certain song to herself, something she constantly listened to back at her life in Croydon, tapping the soles of her polished Mary Janes rhythmically against the marbled corridors. Her deep brown eyes are trained on the double doors of the Transfiguration classroom, mentally conjuring the information that on Mondays, Second Years are taught before First Years. Usually, students she shares the same year level with are in queue outside while waiting, but Aurelia purposefully went early in order to avoid partaking in the traffic that happens in the Grand Staircase whenever students stream in—which happens all the time and is already regarded as a natural occurrence. The bell finally rang in cue with students streaming out of their respective classrooms. Aurelia straightened, letting out a breath in relief. Although she had to wait for 30 more minutes, at least she is in time, and her homework is already done even a day earlier than what was expected. It brought a sense of pride in her, making her chest inflate. The young badger stayed out of the way, as being caught in the rush is such an unpleasant experience. Students eventually dispersed, group of friends arm-in-arm as they descended the stairs, some strides with a sense of urgency in their steps, and some preferred dilly-dallying and loitering right in the corridors, raucous laughters enveloping the area. It is such a familiar scene that Aurelia is used to it; this exact situation, straight out of a perfect description of a jungle, brought a sense of easiness to her, born from the simplicity of it all. Aurelia tilted her head in slight curiosity when a certain Second Year exited from Transfiguration classroom. She did not went straight towards the staircases in both ends of the hallway, she sat on one of the unoccupied benches that littered the corridors. Observing other people when she had nothing better to do—as she left her books categorised as for leisure reading in her quarters in Badger Bungalow—is a game to her. The badge that is pinned in the other girl's uniform robes indicated that she is a Gryffindor, and the fact that she just exited the Transfiguration classrooms is telling of her year level. She has pale skin and red hair, a sort of red that is somewhat unnatural, a shade that made her delicate face contort slightly as it reminded her strongly of blood. This certain girl has a mysterious aura that will make a common folk automatically avert themselves away from her, which constrasted with her doe eyes, perhaps to make her inherently terrible presence somewhat redeemable. She bears such pale skin that is different from River Walker, an impertinent Slytherin that she had the pleasure to meet last year, sardonically speaking, of course. Lack of sun and looking naturally pale is something she can determine separately, utilising her observant eyes. River looked uniformly pale. No offense to him. However, this girl looked... like the Sun itself avoided her presence. She looked washed out; ghostly, even. She is also somewhat pretty. This curious combination of her contrasting overall appearance and presence intrigued her very much. She had never met such person before. Curious; because she already did. Something crawled beneath her skin that she barely noticed, her brilliant mind subconsciously reminding her that she had read such condition before a while back. That she had met someone like her, particularly Simon Kincaid, the former prefect of Hufflepuff. Unknowingly ambulating towards the girl, to perhaps to see better and confirm her assumptions, she almost jumped when the girl noticed her approach and urged Aurelia to sit with her. The young badger opened her mouth to speak, and when a valuable excuse eluded her usual quick wit, she closed it again. Aurelia saw her set of teeth. If she was immature, she would have laughed after the fact that the girl's couple of tooth are missing. She is not though; she could not draw a laugh too, as she noticed how the gaps are remarkably and evenly distanced from each other as though deliberate. The article she wrote last year about werewolves eventually led her to study vampires and dhampirs extensively, even if it is still out of her scope. It had been such a fun endeavour as the Wizarding World became closer to reach, her fingertips scraping the surface. Studying about this world meant compensation. Compensation that she grew and lived far away from here. Meeting Simon Kincaid is also a pleasurable and gracious chance she had, something to thank about, as their meeting helped cement and flesh out her by-the-book description of dhampirs. Aurelia is almost sure that she is right, as often she is, when the girl could not have been a vampire because of the gaps in her set, and the books distinguished dhampirs from vampires for having retractable fangs. Aurelia Valentine could have internalised her thoughts. However, she could not help but blurt out the words “you're a dhampir,” to the Gryffindor girl. |

february 24th, 2025 monday, after classwc: 500ish dhampir | terrible presenceinteracting with: @Aurelia Valentine mentioning: @Emily ShephardIf Scout were drinking something, she'd surely have spat it out in shock. "Wha- excuse me?!" She sputtered, confusion lining her pale face. What in the world? Who did this chick think she was, slamming out an accusation like that! She said it with such confidence, too, like it was a definitive fact that she already knew. How could... Scout had made it very clear that nobody else would know about her secret, it was the kind of thing only Emily (and a few select others) knew. Not even someone like Zyair or Casey knew- and most certainly not this unknown Hufflepuff!
Unable to collect her words on her tongue, Scout gave the girl a scathing look, dark brown eyes burning into the girl. For a moment, her mind fluttered with ideas on how to handle the situation. Does she deny, deny, deny? Does she intimidate the other girl in keeping her mouth shut? Does she admit- no, that wasn't even in the books for her. Nobody would know her secret, nobody would know anything about Scout Fu-Hai, with the exception that she was a twelve-year-old Gryffindor who liked to climb trees, play sports, and watch movies. That was all she wanted anyone to think about her.
An uncomfortable silence settled over the two of them as Scout tried to say something- her mind racing but staying silent. No thought was still enough for her to grasp at, no sentence or ideology locking onto her lips and tongue, nothing besides silence. "I don't know what you're talking about." She finally settles on, crossing her arms. Though she tries to keep her face even (the same way Zyair always manages to do), her eyebrows furrow and her lips press together. "And that's an awfully bold claim to make at someone you don't know."
She was projecting, of course, how couldn't she? Every moment where her secret had come just an inch close to being let out flooded her mind. Had Emily accidentally let her secret out? Had a letter about her dhampirism sent to her father make it into the wrong hands? Scout was never fond of signing her letters with her name- even more when the topic in the letters was something so discreet and careful. If anyone besides Emily knew her secret... Scout might get sick from the thought alone. How could this girl know?
There's a feeling of hopelessness growing in her stomach, dancing and lining her intestines and organs as she tried to think of any way to get out of the situation she was in. Where was Emily when Scout needed her? If only her friend could come swoop in and get her away from this Hufflepuff girl, and if only Emily could reassure Scout that she hadn't let her secret slip, that nobody aside from herself knew. She trusted Emily- obviously she trusted Emily, she wouldn't tell her about her dhampirism otherwise- but she couldn't ignore how horrible she was feeling in the moment.
Sick, that's how she felt. Sick, sick, sick.
"And I sure hope you don't make claims like that to just anyone! It's awfully crude to be so insulting, don't you think?"

𝕭efore Aurelia Valentine could force her blabbering mouth to shut it, words immediately escaped her as though demanding to be released. The Gryffindor girl looked beyond horrified; her response rang through the corridor—something akin to a bell chiming with how high-pitched it was. Her confused expression mirrored Aurelia's, as the young badger never saw an issue with being a half-breed. It is an ignorance the unknowing usually bear, especially when one did not have the experience to live in the Wizarding World from a young age. Ignorant of the discrimination against most of the half-breeds, the young badger chose to stay quiet for a moment in order to assess the situation she inevitably hopped into. Tension gradually enveloped the air, with the girl's scathing look focused on her, her deep brown eyes flashing as anger and a sort of underlying fear swirled within them—something she could not comprehend. The air is suffocating, closing in on her and eventually around her neck, making her take a step back as she clutched her rolled parchments against her chest defensively. The Gryffindor smoothed her otherwise pale face, crossing her arms also in defence, a snarky response escaping her lips. All in quick succession. The crackle of the fire in each torch around them only filled the silence, along with the soft clicks from the impatient taps of the badger's school trainers. Aurelia has no idea what approach she should take, as blurting out her assumptions would be completely a mistake on her part. The girl is right—she had been a complete stranger; both of them were unaware of each other's existence until, of course, today. The raven-haired badger learnt to mind her own business ever since she was a child, and if the person before her refuses to admit the absolute obvious, then who is she to acknowledge that truth the girl is forcing to hide behind closed doors? Clearly, there are important matters she should bother herself with. Refusing to sit beside the pale Gryffindor even if it was the last bench in the Wizarding World, the young Hufflepuff witch settled for assessing her rolled parchments and making a mental note of each lecture she reviewed and the homework and essays she had to write for this one class. Transfiguration is a subject that proved itself difficult, and she found herself doubting the information she had acquired before choosing to refresh her mind with the material again. There are terminologies that need to be remembered, mathematical equations of absolute importance in transfiguring, and a large array of spells she finds useless for everyday life. Burying her face within the assorted parchments, the strong smell of ink overwhelming her senses. There is a joke among students back in Croydon where they cup their hands between the textbooks—cupping the air—and make a gesture of transferring the air to their head... namely, the information they have to review before exams. Aurelia has this notion that the Wizarding World and magic know no boundaries; perhaps there is a spell that makes it inherently possible? Perhaps her unyielding determination will suffice? Oh, the exact thirst to be academically smart. The thought that the dhampir conversation ended there was wrong. The Gryffindor girl appeared distraught as she said her piece, her deep brown eyes still flashing inexplicably. Aurelia could not help but lift a thick eyebrow in confusion, her own set of deep brown eyes enquiring as she stared at the girl. She was almost sure of her dhampirism, although it is still a claim if not backed up by evidentiary support. Her second statement piqued her interest, clearing her mind off Transfiguration for a moment and the struggles of her academic life. It would appear that there is a lot of @Edwin Westbridge's version in here; any different from wizarding folk they deem dangerous and insulting to exist within their vicinity. “Whenever did I insult you? Being a dhampir and being called one is definitely not an insult unless you think otherwise,” Aurelia snapped, her delicate face overly contorted to showcase her disgust at the other girl's notion, an expression she was not ashamed to show everyone, even in front of authority. “People like you actually prevent everyone from living in harmony. Is it really that difficult to co-exist with people who have proven themselves worthy of another chance? They do not pose such a threat like most of the world is implying.” All her answers came from ignorance. She is not aware of the struggles of the dhampirs firsthand. She is not aware of the danger vampires could pose. All came from the innocence of her young heart, which will be squished later on in life whilst she matures. This girl is a dhampir for sure, as her defensiveness from the matter must have come from something she does not know. Not her business, of course, but it would be stupid to take her for a fool. Her observation never failed her, rooted in the fact of how she lived her life in Croydon and her previous schools. Being an outcast honed this skill. Envy of others participating actively when she can only watch from afar with deep hatred sprouting in her heart helped her keenness. She does not care why this girl actively denies the obvious, but one does not need to descend to such atrocities in order to prove a bloody point. |

i'm just like a monstrous flower that bloomed too soon / there's no turning back to a bud
mild cw for internalized racism
Scout can feel bile burning in the back of her throat, the taste of lunch earlier that day tickling the back end of her tongue. She wasn't particularly a fan of fruit, always thinking the sickly sweet of grapes and plums being just too much, but still being far from the inherent sugar of chocolate. If only she could go back to then, she would've made a decision to not wait outside for Emily, and instead go back to her dorms. If she could only go back in time a little.
She had very little care for what the girl said. 'Being a dhampir and being called one is definitely not an insult,'- to who? Who could it not be insulting to? Who could hear such damning words, and not feel hurt in their soul? Of course a human wouldn't understand it, of course this stupid Hufflepuff wouldn't understand... it doesn't matter what vampires are doing to change- the red-haired Gryffindor with a vivacious personality will always be seen as a monster. There is nothing she can do to possibly change that outcome or ideology- it bleeds through her eyes and mouth when she looks in the mirror:
You're a monster.
Scout can hear those words being whispered from her classmates in school, can see the newspapers commenting the same thing (albeit in a more formal way). Monster, there was nothing she could do to change the way people saw her. Maybe a part of her felt guilty, it was a negative way of thinking, after all. But really, maybe she just felt tired, and angry, and sad, all at once. It's not an insult to be called a dhampir- sure-, but how could she ever think differently? How could she ever be called a vampire and feel the self-hatred bubble over in her chest?
You're a horrible, horrible monster.
'Is it really that difficult to co-exist with people who have proven themselves worthy of another chance? They do not pose such a threat like most of the world is implying.'
It's very kind, the way the girl worded her sentence. It almost makes Scout feel not so guilty, it almost makes her feel like she did when she met Emily the first time. Hushing out her beloved secret because she wanted to trust, she wanted to understand, and be understood. Whispering the words 'I'm a dhampir' to Emily, if only to keep that stupid girl from going into the Forest and getting eaten, just once. She couldn't stop Emily every time (though that was more of an indication of Emily's personality, rather than Scout's), but she stopped her once. Her being a monster did something good.
Scout didn't think she posed a threat to anyone, although the same couldn't be said for when she snapped at Casey, at Sage, or when she let Zyair do something like hurt Sabrina. She wasn't a thread, but what she was might've been.
'People like you actually prevent everyone from living in harmony.' Yes, that was something Scout could agree with on a more philosophical level. Of course, what the girl meant was not what Scout agreed with- her words were (broken down) essentially a "you're disgust at vampires is what makes the world so unharmonious", but that wasn't really how Scout heard it in her ears. "You're a monster, and you keep the world unsafe" felt more apt.
How does she even respond, because Scout has no interest in diffusing the situation, has no interest in telling the girl her secret, and certainly has no interest in fighting someone again. In a way, any response she gave would be an admittance of sorts. Either that she really is a monster, a horrible, horrible monster... or that she's someone that has no problem hating nonhumans.
She didn't hate vampires, or dhampirs, or really any nonhumans- that was something reserved for only herself.
"Sure, sure, whatever," Scout lets out a slow breath, "yeah, whatever, you're right. It's absolutely insulting that I wouldn't wanna be called a gross bloodsucker- Christ." That last sentence sounded almost too much like Casey, but Scout filed it away into the back of her brain. She didn't need to think about him right now... "Listen, you don't know me, you shouldn't be saying that stuff to anyone- how would you like it if someone came up to you and said that your mangy hair made you a werewolf? Just keep those kinda comments to yourself."

| ISSUE NO. 003 | [ CORRIDORS • FEB. 24TH, MONDAY ] |
| xxxxxx | The slow, soft breath which escaped @Scout Fu-Hai's lips concealed a certain shakiness to it that did not go unnoticed by Aurelia. The young badger initially assumed that the additional time which her Gryffindor counterpart allowed with that slow breath will be used to think things through in an entirely different way, specifically, her way. Not until the girl opened her mouth to share her piece, garnering a murderous glare and an unconscious twitch of the fingers, currently grasping the poor scrolls so tight it begun to crumple, what with the sudden urge of running a hand through her disheveled, frizzy hair. It is only obvious, especially with the dhampir Gryffindor's initial decision to take an offensive stance instead of pausing, that this never-ending roundabout will acquire no desired progress whatsoever from both parties involved—like what resulted in that debacle Aurelia had with @Edwin Westbridge a few months prior; debacle which included matters pertaining to werewolves in general. In that day in October, whilst soft drizzle of rain traced the surface of the windowpane in the Hogwarts Library, the young Valentine failed to change his perspective about those certain beasts. It will be of no surprise to her if this also ended in a similar note. One thing about Aurelia is she prioritises coming from an academic standpoint—this is her initial mistake, unfortunately. Walk it off. And so she did. One merely cannot save another if the said person refuses to save themselves. That, people, is simply the truth of this god-forsaken world. With the haughtiest scoff she could muster, the young badger walked off, her stride the proudest of them all as the clicking noises produced by her school trainers hitting the squeaky clean marble floors reverberated against the castle walls. However, she decided against the idea of exiting without a parting word. “I sincerely apologise if I was wrong and I did mistake you as a dhampir. You are either playing as one or the fact that you are an exact textbook definition of them is simply... unfortunate coincidences that occurred collectively. However, if there is nothing to be defensive about, then by the gods—act like it!” |
