The letter was sent without a moment's notice, the writing in a neat crimson-red font. Its contents may have made little sense for any onlooker who could have read the letter.

Only the receiver would understand what the sender wrote.

труп,

Beware of the calm dog.

Boram had considered using invisible ink to ensure the contents were not mistakenly read by someone else. Paranoia, secrecy... privacy? That was hard to tell.

Perhaps all of them and more.

In a sea of people, there were some hidden amongst the chaos—listening, waiting for any mistake. Boram had overheard her mother and aunt talk during her past break. Their voices were low and hushed as if they were conspiring.

Nabi's name came up.

She knew her only cousin was sent to Hogwarts, the reasons? Unknown. Well, that was not entirely true; the excuse was her dear Aunt wanted Nabi to try something new. Her jaw clenched as she sealed the letter, the wax hot on the paper She belongs here, not there. Boram had heard stories and rumors of the things that happened at that damned castle, when the news broke out she could not understand why her Aunt deemed that school worthy of their family.

Aunt Jung-Hwa never acted without a plan in mind. There was something more to all of this.

Boram watched the owl fly with the letter fastened to its leg, with a sigh she ran her hand through her hair, deep in thought as the bird disappeared into the distance. Do be wise...

Cousin.

A nickname she gave Nabi due to her features. Lovely, isn't it?

Nabi did not need to open the letter to find out who sent it; the wax stamp was all too familiar. I see she still has her letter privileges... Giving the owl a light pet, she hummed and watched the owl fly away before looking down at the letter.

She glanced around for any on-lookers before calmly opening the letter, her eyes narrowed at the sight of her cousin's horrid calligraphy. Sighing, she began to read the letter in her head, I thought she was over the труп joke... it has been years. The letter's content was merely five words worth, Beware of the calm dog. Even the gentlest dog would bite the hand that feeds it.

But control ensures a dog will not bite.

Tilting her head, Nabi smiled slightly, she had never been one to trust anyone— not even her own shadow, but Boram was far more paranoid than her. Making her way to a corner, she produced a paper and her quill. Using normal black ink she began to write:

Boram.

I see you have not changed, dear cousin.
A dog bites the hand of someone it is no longer afraid of.

'Fear brings order and respect. To be respected is to have control over things— even people.'

Her mother's words echoed as Nabi wrote the letter. She did not always understand how being feared could benefit her, frankly, she preferred her mutual... agreements. Everyone benefitted and was content, but the world was not perfect; sometimes a slight push was needed to get what was wanted, and her mother was more than willing to twist an arm or two if she had to.

A rare thing from her well-composed mother.

Merlin knew if Nabi had the potential to twist some arms.

She calmly folded the letter and sealed it with hot silver wax before attaching it to the owl. Her hand held her quill as she watched the owl leave. Mother did say emotions are tools. She hummed softly and looked down as her quill broke in half with a loud crack, her hand tainted with a few splatters of black ink.

Like her quill— emotions are fragile— easily making a person breakable.

And broken things are dispensable.

Boram looked at the letter her cousin sent. The paper was the same as always—perfect. The silver wax acted as a reminder of the times they would accidentally burn their fingers as younger children who insisted on sending letters weekly.

Children. Stubborn children.

She quickly opened the letter, her eyes scanning with a sense of urgency. A sly grin appeared as Boram read Nabi's reaction to the carefully crafted nickname. Oh, how she loved annoying her beloved cousin. Continuing to read the letter, she tilted her head as she leaned against the nearest wall. "Of course, you always have something smart to say..." she sighed.

Boram may have been a couple of months older, yet she always looked up to her cousin. Her mother always told her she should be more like Nabi— excellent. She was always the one causing trouble and Nabi was the one fixing it in an ease that was almost... admirable. Her father always told her she was the sword and Nabi was the swordsman.

But what was a sword without its swordsman?

Just a beautiful piece of blacksmith collecting dust as time went on.

Boram ran her hand through her hair, no... she was not going to let her shine dull beneath a coat of dust. Nabi and her were different; she knew her cousin was not as strong as she appeared to be. Boram was her older cousin, she had to protect Nabi.

In haste, she grabbed her quill and paper. Scribbling away a response for Nabi.

труп,

Fear may be a double-edged sword that could cause a dog to rebel. Please be wise, Nabi. I can not help you from here.

She blew on the paper, making sure the ink dried before folding it as she glanced around. Why did you have to go there? Should she have told her cousin, she had overheard their mothers talk amongst each other? Perhaps it was nothing important...

Yet why did she get the feeling of dread?

Boram sealed the letter and sent it off with the owl, hoping Nabi would listen to her. They only had each other...

And she was not going to let her swordsman fall.

Actions show power, but words are the core of it.

The ability to twist and guide things at will was something her mother always said to be true strength, an ironed fist? Barbaric. There was a certain beauty in the art of establishing control with merely a handful of words, and her mother did prefer maintaining her appearance and keeping her hands clean.

It was only natural she would want Nabi to be the same way.

Nabi was the future of the Park bloodline, she had to know which pawn to play.

Every pawn is useful, a worthy sacrifice.

The paper rustled as she opened the letter, her grey eyes narrowing as she read its contents. Out of the two of them, her mother did say Boram's caring nature would be her downfall one day. That rebellion was just a pathetic outburst for a momentary false sense of control. Oh my sweet naive Boram...

One day, you may end up caring for the wrong person.

She folded the letter before taking out a fresh piece of white parchment and a quill, the ink ran smoothly as it curved with each letter.

Boram.

Rebellion is a fool's weapon. Do not worry, cousin, it may also be an opportunity to put down a rabid dog. As always,

burn the letters.

Rebellion was destructive, lit in red and orange hues, thick in ash.

Volatile.

However, its unpredictability gave way for something more controlled to emerge. All it took was a simple nudge, a pull, a word, to get a good reaping. In chaos, lambs look toward their shepherd to lead them away; without thinking of where they may be led, perhaps to safety...

Or their demise.

She hummed softly to herself, her hands moving with such ease that her fingers appeared mechanical. The letter was folded and sealed before being sent on its way, her gaze shifting back down to Boram's folded letter.

I see you still have not learned.

A clicking sound echoed in the silent area as she began to walk away, already planning on discarding the letter in her common room's fireplace.

There was no need for a third pair of eyes.
