As Your Friend
january 31st, 2025 fridaywc: 700ish dhampir | terrible presenceto: @Emily Shephard mentioning: @Colin McCoire & @Ophelia NorthwellLips dry from rereading Zyair's letter for the nth time, Scout sighed as she crouched in the owlery, torn-up shoes protecting her from the feathers and hay on the ground. She stood up, dusting her skirt off and changing positions to lean against the wall, and shoves the letter back into her jacket pocket. She wasn't going to be able to get a reply out today, just like she hadn't been able to get one out for the past week.
As soon as she turned away to dig a treat out of her pocket for Pebble, her eyes widened as a familiar brown owl flew right into her face, dropping a letter at Scout's feet and swiftly flying away. She froze, but quickly raced out to one of the windows to watch as Tavra flies away. "Tavra- what?" She called out, waving her hand to try and beckon the owl back to her. When it (obviously) didn't work, she turned around to grab the letter, only tilting her head when she realized it wasn't actually a letter, but a poorly scrawled-on sheet of paper.
Am I wrong for trying to help? Or do you think I'll bring you destruction?
Scout was... baffled, to say the least. The note came from Tavra, so it had to be from Emily, but... what did that even mean? Trying to help- well that could be referring to just about anything between the two of them. But that last word, destruction, that felt a little too real for it to be something simple. A terrible pit was forming in her stomach, a thousand things springing to mind at the idea.
Destruction, did Emily mean something like death? That was all a little too much for Scout to even think about, maybe she meant something like Scout's dhampirsm... could the secrets Emily had kept about Scout get out?
No, thinking like that wasn't going to help anyone. What would Emily say in a time like this? (Would regurgitating her own sayings even help?) Scout was going to have to come up with something to say to Emily on her own, no help from someone smarter than her like Zyair- though he'd probably give better advice than Scout ever could.
Tentatively, she picked up her discarded quill and began writing.
Listen, Emi, I think there's something you need to hear. I know I'm probably not going to word this in the best way, but I just need you to know how I feel even if it doesn't sound nice or pretty.
I don't care.
I don't care if the world is beating you down, or if you feel like you're not accomplishing your goals at the pace you want them to be. I don't care if you struggle and fall a thousand- million times, and I don't care if you can only make a small dent in the issues you're trying to resolve. Do you wanna know why I don't care?
Because no matter what, you're trying your best. You're doing what you can, even though it's hard and it sucks, and you keep trying. Every single day I'm amazed by how much you keep pushing for what you know is right, and every day I'm reminded that you're my best friend because of it. You know about my struggles, you know about the monster I am, and you still try every single day to help me with them, with who I am.
Even if you feel like you're not doing something, I just want you to know that at the very least, you're helping one person. I don't care if you're not saving everyone, because you are saving someone. I hope you can see that, and I hope that means as much to you as it means to me, because you're my best friend. You'll always be a hero to me, a sweet human who wants to help us non-humans.
And I know it's not just me. You're helping normal people, too. Even if he bugs me to death, I know Colin's happier when he sees you. There are other people too, like Ophelia, who I know is just always chipper to see you around, because you are a shining beacon of love in this world.
I hope that means something to you.
don't look at me; you can't understand, right? i'm just like a monstrous flower that bloomed too soon
