As upset as she was from the marks she earned in her first year, Kaitlyn knew she couldn’t stay in her dorm room forever. They weren’t even that bad, especially considering she was a muggle-born witch and knew nothing prior to coming to Hogwarts. Yet, she knew she could do better. So, she devoted herself to studying in her dorm in Slytherin. Sadly, that meant that all social interaction for her was cut off, which she wasn’t pleased about.

Even though she liked being held up in her four-poster bed in her dorm, Kaitlyn came across a topic in her studies that needed outside assistance. Mainly, the library at Hogwarts, which was one of her favorite places to be … outside of the Greenhouse and the Slytherin Common Room, of course!

And yet, walking out of her dorm meant that she actually needed to get dressed. Regardless, Ms. Kaitlyn Connor routinely dressed well, even if she was staying in her dorm. She wasn’t the type to randomly lounge around and do nothing. She needed to be productive. It was in her blood.

For now, the young second-year was dressed in her Slytherin uniform. The taps of her low-heeled shoes filled her ears as she glided her way to the library. Even though she hadn’t been at Hogwarts for that long yet, she figured she could manage the way to the library in her sleep … not like she ever wanted to try that. She entered the library and made no eye contact with anyone.

Instead, Kaitlyn immediately headed off to the side of the library and dropped off her satchel. She briefly left for a few moments to obtain a Herbology book off the shelf from the Herbology section. Taking out her quill and parchment, she began to work as diligently as ever.

Minnie was just about bored out of her mind. She didn't have much of anything to do, besides her homework, which she did not want to do. As the minutes ticked on, she decided that she would have to do her homework. Being bored was worse than doing homework in her mind. She didn't have any pranks she wanted to plan, any sketches she wanted to draw, or even any pets for her to groom. Lightning, her ferret, was looking immaculate as ever, and didn't really require her to brush her ferret's fur.

She had some potions homework, her least favorite. She had to give an essay on the uses of dittany in potions, and she had no idea. She hadn't exactly paid too much attention to the lecture, but this time it wasn't her fault! Her potion had been hissing strangely, and she found that that caused her to pay more attention to her potion than the lesson.

That meant Minnie had to go down to the library and figure out what the uses were for dittany. She wasn't thrilled with that, but at least it wasn't boring. As she walked towards the library, she was reminded of somebody else who loved school-like things. Kaitlyn, who had disappeared from Minnie's life. She had no idea why Kaitlyn had just gone missing, they had been dating! She had nearly forgotten about her now, having moved on to other crushes and thoughts.

Lost in her thoughts, she barely noticed she was at the library. So she reluctantly grabbed a book on dittany and set herself to work. After a few minutes of reading, she glanced up, trying to see if anyone else was in the library. She did love people watching. To her surprise, a girl was sitting not three tables away! Minnie knew that girl very well. It was Kaitlyn!

What am I going to say to her? I can't believe she's here, after being away from my life for so long! I guess I should just say hi to her. She supposed. She then got up from her table and walked over to Kaitlyn's, wondering what to say. In the end, she decided on a simple greeting. Minnie reached the table and shyly smiled at her. "Hello Kaitlyn, nice to see you again."

Kaitlyn crossed her legs at her ankles. Her self-imposed disappearance due to her grades impacted her socially. It meant she missed out on various activities since she was too busy studying in her dorm. She neglected her friends and her burgeoning relationship with Minnie, a fact that she was nowhere near pleased about. While simply a thirteen-year-old girl, she knew enough that what she did wasn’t right for those who cared about her, even if she needed to do better in class.

For her current trip to the library, Kaitlyn wanted to do more than just revise her notes. Although to put it frankly, her notes were pretty good! Regardless, it felt nice to get out of the Slytherin dorms finally. She wasn’t a fan of staying there the whole time, figuring that she really needed to get out of her dorm and actually socialize. She was robbing herself of having fun with her friends.

At first, Kaitlyn did not notice Minnie enter the library, nor did she start reading a book on Dittany. It wasn’t until the Hufflepuff came over to her that Kaitlyn looked up. Her blue eyes widened as she dropped her quill on the table.

“Minnie? H-hi, Minnie. Oh my goodness, I’ve missed you so much after all this time. My grades last year weren’t that good, so I stayed studying in my dorm all this time.” Her hand began to nervously play with one of her pigtails. “B-but … that doesn’t excuse me from not contacting you. I should’ve owled you. I’m sorry. I was a bad friend … and a bad date. I’m a terrible person. You can do so much better than me. I’m sorry,” she squeaked, tears threatening to spill over her cheeks.

Minnie watched as Kaitlyn slowly broke down in front of her. She inwardly panicked, not knowing how to handle sadness. I don't mind that she wasn't around much! Sure I missed her, but that doesn't make her a bad person! She hugged Kaitlyn, trying to figure out what to say. She had missed her so much, and had almost forgotten about her, trying to move on from the pain of losing her connection.

"Kaitlyn..." She began softly. "You're not a terrible person. Please get that out of your head. I've really missed you as well, but that doesn't mean you needed to owl me. It's fine that you wanted to focus on your studies, I really don't mind. You are an amazing date and...." She paused nervously, biting her lip. "I couldn't ever find a person better than you." Even as she said that, two faces popped into her head.

Keith Moore was the first. She had seen him and instantly started to crush. He was cool, nice, and very cute. If anyone could rival Kaitlyn, he was the person. Theo was the other one. Her childhood crush, he constantly talked with her and they spent amazing summers together. She had tried to forget her crush and just be friends, but it was hard when he smiled and his cute dimples came out, or when he picked out her favorite flowers from an orchid. So maybe Kaitlyn wasn't the only person she liked. That didn't mean that she was lying, even if it did give her a little guilt. Kaitlyn was an amazing person, and even if she didn't want to be with her anymore, they could hopefully still be friends.

Minnie let go from her hug, blushing from ear to ear. What if Kaitlyn no longer had feelings for her? Things could change over time, and it would be embarrassing to be rejected. She should wait it out a little before asking her out again. "I'm just happy to see you again, I'm really not angry."

A few of the tears fell from her cheeks as Kaitlyn sniffled. She hugged Minnie back, savoring the Hufflepuff’s warmth against her. As Minnie tried to calm her, Kaitlyn still felt pretty bad. What if Minnie hated her? It didn’t sound like it, but that may have been the surprise of seeing her in the library. She truthfully believed she messed up royally. Hopefully, it wasn’t too late to fix it.

Kaitlyn listened to Minnie, her body slightly trembling in their embrace. “Th-thank you,” she squeaked in response. She was curious about that last statement. No one was better than her. It was an interesting sentiment, and she hoped it was true. As it was, she barely deserved to be in Minnie’s presence. But, if that were how Minnie felt about her, then she’d have to re-evaluate her self-confidence. Then again, her confidence was never high to begin with.

The second Minnie broke their hug and let go, Kaitlyn missed having the Hufflepuff in her arms. But, she squashed her longing for now. After all, she hated herself in that moment. It was never her intention to hurt anyone, and certainly not Minnie. She valued their relationship.

Seeing Minnie blush, Kaitlyn blushed as well. She wasn’t used to having a crush, especially on a cute girl like Minnie. “I’m happy to see you, too,” she squeaked. She quickly rummaged through her satchel and took out a handkerchief. After gently dabbing her eyes, she blew her nose loudly into the handkerchief. It was nowhere near polite … her etiquette teacher would yell at her for such an act!

Her eyes focused on Minnie’s belongings at another table. Kaitlyn looked shyly at Minnie. “Would you like to join me? If you want, of course. We could work on our assignments … and, um … catch up? If you want. Sorry … I’m not good with any of this,” she gestured vaguely. “Sorry,” she apologized again, her cheeks flushing scarlet in her embarrassment.

Minnie nodded immediately as Kaitlyn asked if she wanted to join her. Maybe I should be taking this slower...I don't want to scare her off! She thought. It did calm her nerves a little to see that Kaitlyn was just as embarrassed as her about all of this. Hopefully she still liked her, and wasn't about to tell her that she just wanted them to be friends. As much as she wanted it to not be true, Minnie was sure that their relationship couldn't pick up where it left off.

"Of course I'd like to join you! I'd love to catch up with you, how has your year been going? And I'm sure you're much better at potions than me, so you could help me! Not that I want you to-I mean I-" Minnie paused, taking a deep breath and trying to stop the words from continuing to tumble out of her mouth. "What I mean to say is, thanks for the offer, I'll go get my stuff and move it over here!"

As she grabbed her stuff, she paused for a second, trying to let her mind wrap around what had just happened. I really can't believe Kaitlyn is here. I know I still have a crush on her-a few minutes ago proved that-but does she? I really hope nothing has changed between us. She let out a calming breath and walked back over to Kaitlyn, putting her stuff down on the table. Even if something has changed, I'll still try my best to be friends with her, while still respecting her boundaries. Minnie smiled at Kaitlyn, trying to appear more confident than she was."Okay, what do you want to do first? Catching up on each other, or our assignments?"

A light flush bloomed on Kaitlyn’s cheeks, and she chuckled at Minnie’s enthusiasm. ‘I feel bad completely leaving her before … but this sounds like a good sign? Dialogue is important, after all … maybe, I don’t know? I’m not good with these things … especially social interaction.’ She played with her pigtail braids, unsure of where to keep her hands for now. Staying silent for now, a shy smile formed on her lips as Minnie ran off to get her belongings.

Her eyes glanced at the Herbology assignment she was writing, and she gently laid her quill nearby off the page. While she had no idea what she was doing, the last thing she wanted was to ruin her work … even if it was an accident. Why put herself in that situation, especially if it was avoidable? Here she was, absent for so long; being careless was hardly an option for the young Slytherin. Mindfully, she pushed her inkwell away from her work for now.

Stretching her legs gently under the table, Kaitlyn played with her pigtails again … one of her many nervous habits. She seemed to have developed more of those habits over time … and interesting phenomena. A smile crossed her lips at Minnie’s question. “Any of the subjects are a good choice … But, I think you mentioned Potions before,” she teased gently. “Seriously, though … why not both? I don’t mind talking while working,” she offered. “Or really, whatever works best … I … I don’t want to tell you what to do … Honestly, I’m fine with whatever.”
