Cirrus was jolted from awake as his head fell too far to the side, he quickly rubbed his eyes, trying to slow his racing heart. The boy scanned the surrounding area, his amber eyes taking in the space around him as if putting together pieces of a puzzle. He blinked a few more times as the two brain cells he had finally clicked together, like splicing two wires of a car together to create some sort of reaction, a spark of some sort.

Cirrus was in the the backseat of his parent's mini-van, he must've fallen asleep during the ride, which wasn't uncommon for the boy. He would often be found napping, or at the very least he was seen with his eyelids heavy and dreary, fluttering shut. The coffee-haired boy yawned attempting to stretch his arms, just to retaliate quickly as a shooting pain seared through his right arm. He looked down at the large cast with a furrowed brow, his nose twitching slightly in annoyance.

His broken arm had been why the plans had been rescheduled for today, as the last two days he had been back and forth between doctors after traveling back from England to Scotland once more. What plan? Well, today they were driving from St.Andrews to Edinburgh to visit his father's, Hotae, old friend from college he had met during his study abroad. The two hadn't been able to hang out for years due to clashing schedules and family life, but they had finally found a perfect opportunity so he took it.

In addition to this, they decided to bring Cirrus because the Mim's had their own daughter around his age that he could hang out with. It truly was a strange idea created by parents that they expect whoever their best friend's kids and their kids would be best friends as well, even though the children didn't even know of each other's existence before today. But Cirrus wasn't opposed to this idea, he would take any friend he could get.

It wasn't long before the car slowed in front of a beautifully made home made of birch, the family of three, soon to be four, got out and walked towards the house. Gently rapping at the Mim's door, his mother bearing the gift of her famous apple pie.

The scent of lavender and old wood hung in the air, mingling with the warm smell of freshly baked bread Mom had taken out of the oven that morning. The house was quiet, and from her spot on the couch, she could hear the faint murmur of her parents in the kitchen, their voices mingling with the sound of dishes being stacked and the occasional squeak of a chair being moved. Her fingers ran along the edge of a magazine open on her lap, but she hadn’t read it in a while. Her reason for picking up the magazine in the first place was overshadowed by the thoughts revolving around the impending visit. A family friend of her parents was arriving today, and with them, their son, a boy named Cirrus. She had never heard his name before Mom had mentioned it days ago, excitedly explaining that her father had been Dad’s college classmate and that, by chance, they had finally found time to get together after years without seeing each other. And of course, in their adult logic, it had seemed like an excellent idea to bring her into the equation. “He’s your age, I’m sure you’ll get along,” Mom had said with such confidence that it had made her frown. What if we didn’t like each other? What if we had nothing in common? It wasn’t that she disliked meeting new people, but the idea that her parents had already decided for her that they were going to be friends was strange, almost as if it was set in stone. As if friendship could be forced. She sighed and closed the book softly, leaving it on the coffee table before stretching her legs out on the couch. The light coming through the window had a golden hue, illuminating the dust floating in the air. From the kitchen, the sound of spoons hitting bowls indicated that Mom was preparing something else.

She stood calmly, feeling the wood creak beneath my bare feet. I walked to the window, slightly pulling back the curtain to look outside. The garden was quiet, with the leaves of the birch trees swaying in the breeze and shadows cast across the grass in irregular patterns. Beyond the street, the afternoon passed like any other, with the occasional sound of a car passing by or the chirping of a bird. Soon, a car would pull up in front of the house, bringing with it a stranger who, according to our parents’ plans, was destined to be their friend. She didn’t know what to expect from him, but deep down, the uncertainty had some excitement.

The sound of the knock on the door echoed through the house, and her mother rushed to answer it with the natural grace that always accompanied her. Stelle, however, remained in the living room, sitting cross-legged on the couch, absentmindedly twirling a pen between her fingers. It wasn’t that she wasn’t interested in the visit; she just didn’t know what to expect. She had heard her parents talk about Dad’s friends, about their time at college, about how life had changed since then. But now, one of those friends was here, with his family, and apparently with a boy her age. Her mom had told her it would be a good opportunity to make a new friend, but the idea seemed strange to her. How were we supposed to just fit in just because our parents knew each other?

When the door opened, she heard her mother’s voice waving excitedly. Stelle leaned a little on the couch to get a better look. There was a woman holding an apple pie (her nose picked up the scent of cinnamon even from a distance) and next to her a man who must be Dad’s friend. But what caught her attention the most was the little boy behind them. He had brown hair, tousled as if he had just woken up from a nap. His amber eyes scanned the room with a mix of curiosity and tiredness, as if he wasn’t fully awake yet. Then she noticed the cast on his arm. —Mama could help him—. she murmured softly from her spot. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to go; in reality, she knew perfectly well that she would end up running to them at any moment. She wrinkled her nose and jumped up from the couch, adjusting her soft yellow (or as she put it, chick yellow) dress so she could make a good impression. In the few steps she took between the living room and the entrance, she pushed her curls back, ready to say hello. She stood in front of the boy, and without waiting for any kind of signal, she stretched out her hand towards him, looking him straight in the eyes. —I’m Stelle, let’s be friends. How did you break your arm?—. she said with a casual smile looking at the boy.

The smell of caramelized apples and cinnamon seemed to sing through his nose, it was a pleasant scent that also followed his every move. The boy was seemingly intoxicated by the fragrance, drowning in it like a pungent perfume. Cirrus just earlier that day had assisted his pregnant mother with creating the apple pie to put less stress on her, and before he knew it his father also accompanied them since Cirrus's arm was currently broken.

This morning had been filled with joy and the peace of familial bonding, it was the first moment they had shared as a full family with Chamomile. The vegan apple pie had small ornate leaves made of pastries and braided plaits covering the filling in a grid-like pattern. Cirrus couldn't help but fall in love with the architecture and character of the Mim's home by the exterior alone; The glowing warm light of the sun made the paint shine a pearly iridescent color that took the boy's breath away.

The wispy boy watched his father's hand intently as it rose, his knuckles gently tapping the door with a quiet rhythm, one, two, three! Before he drew back again, Cirrus having now tuned back into all the sounds surrounding him he could hear the quiet rustling of the breeze flowing across the yard, the lush green taking the form of small waves, the blades at the mercy of wherever the wind pushed it.

The door opened revealing a woman maybe in her early to mid-thirties, her champagne locks falling into a perfect bobbed haircut, her face glowing in the warm hue that had cast itself upon her as she stood in the entryway. The boy only half-listened letting his mind and thoughts drift elsewhere, or what one might say is that his head was in the clouds. He followed along like a mindless robot, still not fully awoken from his car nap as he entered the house.

He stood with an almost detached curious expression as he let his amber eyes scan around the new area he found himself in, giving a polite friendly dimpled smile whenever it seemed prompted by the adults. His toothy smile sometimes revealing the small chip in his right front tooth. Cirrus nearly jumped by what seemed like teleportation, before he could process what was happening an outstretched hand floated in between him and the sudden figure.

"I’m Stelle, let’s be friends. How did you break your arm?"

Her straightforwardness as her blue eyes stared into his, had caught Cirrus completely off guard, by instinct he subconsciously raised his left arm, his tanned hand wrapping around hers to politely shake it. The girl was fair-skinned, her golden hair falling in long ringlets that cascaded down her back, there were also a few sparse curls that seemed to frame her slightly rounded face perfectly. Cirrus looked down at his right arm which was all wrapped up in a a light blue cast, his ears tinging a light crimson. His lips puckered out slightly in an embarrassed pout.

"Hi, nice ower meet ye stelle, ma name's cirrus,"1 He said looking back up at the girl adorned in a simple yellow dress, which didn't contrast much to Cirrus's simple button-up and black trousers. "A guess we can be friends, A canae figure why else no... An as for ma arm i-"2

He cut himself off for a second as he scratched the back of his neck with a sheepish smile.

"A slippit on ma pant leg at a party... Um sae... A like yer house! it's pretty!"3 The mousy brown-haired boy said honestly yet eager to change the topic away from his awkward accident. Cirrus let his eyes rest on too his parents who were deep in conversation with hers, on whatever boring adult-ish things adults talked about.

"So..." He turned towards her. "Dae ye have django? or got anythin fun tae dae?"4

Stelle watched the brown-haired boy with a mix of curiosity and tenderness. Her cheeks, barely flushed, matched the crimson hue that colored Cirrus's ears as she spoke. The directness of her question seemed to have taken him by surprise, but her answer, despite the shyness, was sincere.

—A skateboard?—. Stelle repeated, letting out a soft laugh that sounded like the tinkling of a small bell. —That sounds... interesting. Although perhaps not very safe—.

Their hands were still linked, and when Cirrus let go, Stelle realized that she had been swinging her arm slightly, as if her energy could not be contained. Her yellow dress fluttered a little as she moved, the light fabric catching the warm light that filtered through the windows. She began to walk, waiting for him to follow.

—Thank you, I'm glad you like the house—. she said, her blue eyes brightening, shining with the same warmth as the afternoon sun. —Sometimes I think it’s too big, especially when I’m playing hide and seek. I get lost even when I’m not trying to hide—.

The girl let out a small dramatic sigh, a gesture more fitting of an actress than a child, and then refocused on Cirrus. Her attention was intense, but in a welcoming way, as if he were the only one in the room who mattered at the moment.

—Django? No, but I have a lot of games—. She bit her lower lip thoughtfully. —I also have a collection of books, but… I don’t know if that’s very fun—.Her lips curved into a mischievous smile.

—Although…—. she leaned toward him, lowering her voice as if sharing a secret. —We could sneak into the back garden. There’s a small pond, and sometimes there are frogs. Or…—. she dragged out the last word, letting the intrigue build. We could look for my aunt’s cat. She’s like a little ghost, always hiding, but if we find her, maybe she’ll let us pet her.

Stelle took Cirrus’s hand without waiting for his response, her grip gentle but determined. Her energy was contagious, like a whirlpool that sweeps everything in its path.

—Come on, I’ll show you!—. she said, pulling him into the house but not pushing him to get out.

As the two children disappeared down a hallway, the voices of the adults faded into the background, becoming a distant echo. Stelle no longer thought about how they would look in the eyes of others, or how her mother insisted that she always be a perfect hostess. Now all that mattered was the adventure, the crunch of leaves under her feet, and the excitement of sharing a moment with her new friend. And in that instant, for Stelle and Cirrus, the world was a place full of possibilities, of secrets to discover, and of friendships that were just beginning to blossom. At the back door, she kicked off her shoes and set them aside before opening the door.

—This way—. she said softly as she stepped out, letting her toes play with the grass beneath her feet. She smiled contentedly and looked up at him, inviting him to follow her.

Cirrus squinted in small confusion at the mention of a skateboard, did he skateboard? He just nodded politely with an exaggerated shrug, just writing it off as a simple misinterpretation of his words, which had happened a lot more common than one would be lead to believe. Orginally this had frustrated him very much, but after this same problem had brought him his best friend Geek, he didn't have much complaints anymore. I wonder how she is doing?

The girl let out a small laugh, which sounded like a small tinkling that reminded of the boy of a fairy, much to the likeness of Tinkerbell. Now that he thought about it some more, the girl really did look like tinkerbell in her yellow dress that twirled around her as she swayed, her blue eyes sparkling in the drifting rays of sun, which Cirrus enjoyed the warmth, letting himself slowly become a bit more lethargic, like a basking iguana. The comparison was rather comedic, as the girl was bout ready to bounce across the walls whilst the boy found himself struggling to not close his eyes.

Cirrus tilted his head at the girl, looking at her with half-lidded eyes of honey as she spoke, trying to figure how to fix this growing situation of boredom, someway to entertain themselves. Stelle then leaned in slightly with a smile that hinted of micheveious nature, her hair falling in golden swirls around her face as she did so. Cirrus did the same leaning over slightly in curiousity, as if they were sharing a deep secret that no one could know about. He strained his ears to pick up every word that left her lips in a whisper of the willows, shedding any sort of sleepiness that was left in the boy's system.

Cirrus couldn't do anything but smile as Stelle grabbed his hand and dragged him away, the only thing Cirrus could see was beautiful gold swirls dance around as he curiously let himself be taken away to their new expedition. Next thing he knew they had arrived to the their first destination, watching first what Stelle did before following suit, taking off his white vans before stepping onto the soft lush grass.

A large gust of wind whipped itself through the large vast land and over the rolling hills of the valley. A small sprawled across his features as he took a deep breath of fresh air, letting it fill in lungs as he exhaled, the warmth of the sun bathing him, it felt as if he had been wrapped up in a warm blanket. He slowly opened his eyes to look back at Stelle, before jogging up to follow her. Not bothering to talk and ruin the peace and serenity of nature.
