12:30-13:30 on Sunday, 9th February, 2025...
Who knew that this day would come.
Raizel had stood on this piste so many times now, whether it was during her short time as an official member of the Gryffindor Duelling Team, her unofficial duels and some times where she had lent a hand in helping out a couple folks by looking over their duel. Who would’ve thought she would be back here, not as a duellist, but as an official moderator? It felt unreal, not after she thought she had left this sport behind.
No matter, there was no time to contemplate about the past for she had a duel to start. Looking over on both sides of the piste, she was hoping to find some familiar faces at least, maybe some acquaintances at most but most of the duellists here are unfamiliar, except for a couple of people on the Hufflepuff side. Emily Shephard, one she had seen before in the past months just by the edge of the Forbidden Forest. A long time ago, surprise she could still remember. Minnie Duke… wasn’t she a broom racer? That race still has that lingering bad taste in her mouth. Joining them is Costanza Jewelweed, a first year. On the Ravenclaw side, there’s Yougle Crenshaw, Tracey Bailey, and Maisie Gemmell. She needed to jot all of those names down to remember them.
“I expect you all know the rules by now.” The Gryffindor said, looking from the Badgers side and then to the Raven’s. “If not… well, guess you’ll have to figure it out while you duel. Wands at the ready!” She paused to gather her own courage. It was more unnerving standing here as a moderator than a duellist. “Begin!”

Okay! New season, a new crack at the whip for duelling!
Emily was still reeling at the outcome for her last match up against Gryffindor, getting triple blasted by all three members of the opposing team while she alone had to take it all in a dying whimper. But she wasn't ready to quit just yet. There was still time to bring back some dignity into the team.
She arrived at the piste and immediately looked for friendly faces in the crowd spectating. She was hoping Scout would come and watch her. Emily also looked for Colin and Ava, an habitual instinct after spending so much time at them. Between those two and Scout, she felt instantly at ease when any one of them were nearby. She reached on her tippy toes to try and peek around every nook of the crowd to find them but so far she couldn't see Scout waving erratically at her, or Ava standing cool and collected as she watched over her, or even Colin's messy hair among the heads of the spectators. Not yet.
She greeted Raizel with a friendly nod before taking her place with the other badgers.
"Alrighty... Game face on, head space in... Let's do this!"

Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw: Match 7

It felt different: being here for real. There was a heaviness as she stepped up on the dias with shallow breaths, but a focused eye. The nervousness could gnaw at her and she knew that was too great a risk. She just had to breathe and remind herself that none of this really mattered—even if she did end up in the hospital wing. It wasn't an exam or an attempt at the greatest dress ever made. It was just a few minutes.
And for these few minutes, she had two fellow housemates. Giving Tracey a broad smile and Yougle a polite wave, she hoped they'd be able to make it through. Now, it felt like that practice duel against Tracey had all been worth it—all the lightning—because it had built up some trust, nevermind some practice. She was sure others had been practicing too; that was only expected.
Ahead of them would be the moderator, Raizel, and three Hufflepuffs—all new faces to her. Not knowing anything about them, the thought did occur to Maisie that they might be more experienced in duelling and spells more generally. By her words, Emily certainly seemed to have enthusiasm. Despite this, she still wished them, "Good luck, Hufflepuffs." After all, this was not about winning. This was about trusting in oneself and one's team. Looking across at her teammates, it seemed to Maisie they were in a good position to do just that.

Back on the duelling team, Costanza wondered if this was a mistake. The match she lost in first year wasn't exactly a fun experience and while she did miss the hubbub of preparing for stage one, she couldn't deny that the peaceful first term was lovely. Now, she was willingly subjecting herself to get whacked by spells and she hadn't even gotten back into the groove of classes yet. But the witch only felt comfort while climbing onto the stage. Minnie, who was present for her first duel, was here too, which made things better. Costanza hoped that they had better luck this time around.───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Raizel was expecting fire, dancing, and many more for usually, the first round is the most exciting one with duels often mellowing down in the middle. That was only based on her own experience as a duellist and guess there were rare times when spells decided to never hit until the last minute. That was probably just her duels though. In any case, while most spells decided to miss their target, one of those landed.
The Badgers were out for blood with all their wands aimed at Tracey Bailey. An Obscuro, a classic duelling spell and a super effective one at that if it ever hits. A good choice, perfect for rendering one helpless and an easy target. Then, a double Flipendo. They sure look like they are looking for a quick knockout. Fortunately for Tracey, she was quick on her feet but dodging three spells so early on must’ve caught her by surprise or something. While two of those spells missed, one hit and boy, that one packed a punch. Getting hit by a Flipendo is no joke, those hurt a lot, Raizel speaking from experience.
The Birds weren’t as lucky as Minnie though. They, too, have a similar tactic of at least focusing their spells on a single target. Yougle aimed for Emily who nimbly avoided that incoming spell and the other two went for Costanza, a blindfold spell and a fire spell. Those would’ve been devastating if they hit. Unfortunately, Costanza was just as slippery as Tracey. Only the birds suffered from damage this time but it’s still too early to say the badgers have the upperhand already.

Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw: Match 7

Tracey had just echo'd her call for good luck when the whistle blew and somewhere in the crowd, she heard her name. Squinting she scanned it and there she was: Avis, her very best friend, in the crowd cheering her on! Butterbeer in hand, she was ready to watch this all go down. And that gave Maisie some confidence: they could do this.
And yet there seemed to be some hesitance—or perhaps some expert dodging—across all sides as only a single spell hit. Minnie's Flipendo knocked right into Tracey, sending her flying backwards. Hearing Tracey mutter as she got back up, Maisie told her softly but firmly, "It's because you're good. Don't forget." After all, Maisie had experienced it first hand. No matter how much Tracey was unsure of her past performance, she was still a contender. She just had to believe it.
Holding her wand taut, Maisie glanced around the room for a second. Many of these faces were those she didn't know—they could have stood like the dummies Mylo had used to help train her. But she had a friend in the stands and a friend here besides her, if Tracey would agree. Whatever happened, she wasn't alone. And that—not victory—was the important part.
