Jade walked quickly through the hallways, carrying her books. She brushed past people, occasionally running into them and not bothering to apologize. A few called after her and muttered about her behavior, but she didn’t care at the moment. She just wanted to get away from everybody, to some place where she could just focus and get some peace and quiet. I cannot believe everything that happened today, Jade thought, sighing in frustration as she finally arrived at the library. She quickly walked through the doors, making her way as far back as she possibly could. Some other students had already snagged the seats in the furthest corners of the library, but Jade was able to find a table that was relatively far back.

She dropped her books down with a large thud, earning her an annoyed glance from one of the library house elves lurking about. Jade pretended not to notice, instead opening up one of her notebooks and getting out her quill. Her day had been absolutely horrible, all things considered, and she hadn’t managed to accomplish anything in class like she usually did. In every single class, she had been seated next to some of the most annoying students. They didn’t concentrate, they didn’t do their work, and they left everything to Jade. It was a nightmare, especially in Potions. On top of that, she had sat with friends during lunch, which had meant she had to make conversation. Jade had not been in the mood to talk to people by the time she made it to lunch, and she certainly wasn’t in the mood to talk to anybody now. No, what Jade wanted to do was get this stupid homework done, so she could go back to her dorm and read a book in peace.

Determined, she took a look at the homework assignment. I can get this done quickly, Jade thought, picking up her quill and setting to work.

* * *

Jade slammed her notebook shut with a frustrated sigh, pushing it away and dramatically dropping her head onto the table. “Ugh…” she complained, even though there wasn’t anyone to hear. It had been over an hour since she had first arrived in the library, and she had yet to make any progress on her homework. Sure, she had done some work, but she hadn’t finished any assignments and the work she had done was absolutely terrible. “I should just go and read,” she muttered to herself. It’s not like I’m getting anything done. Jade sighed, picking her head up from the desk and looking at her notebooks again. But... I should try to get this done still, she thought reluctantly. Sighing again, Jade reached for a notebook and started to attempt another homework assignment.

Pam had lost her pen.

Now you would wonder, it's just a pen, what was so special about it that it would warrant a return trip back to the Library?

Well, that pen was precious to Pam. Minus the fact that she was a major stationary girlie and the thought of losing any of her stationary collection hurt her brain, the pen was a gift from her father and had become a kind of good luck charm for her. Besides, it had only been about 3 months. That pen had been meant to last her for atleast the whole year.

And so, here she was, heading to the library. She knew where she was going to search, so entering the place, she made a beeline for the table she had sat in previously. Maybe it would be on the table or one of the chairs? Or maybe on the floor?

As she neared the table though, she spotted another girl sitting there, a brown haired girl, head dipped over a set of parchments and books. Pam guessed she might be in first year like her.

Maybe she would be able to help me.

As Pam approached the girl, she sensed that the latter was annoyed at something, presumably the homework lying on the table in front of her.

Well, then I won't bother her for too long.

Making up her mind, Pam asked her, "Uh hello. Have u seen a purple pen lying here somewhere?"

Jade had just started to get some notes down for the homework assignment she was working on, when she heard someone talking to her. "Uh hello. Have u seen a purple pen lying here somewhere?" Her initial instinct was to pretend she hadn’t heard, and she almost did just that. Then the question being asked registered in Jade’s mind, and she decided she could take care of it rather quickly. After all, she hadn’t seen any pens lying around - and anyway, most people used quills at Hogwarts. Why would someone be using a pen? It would just be harder to keep track of and replace.

Barely restraining a sigh, Jade looked up from her homework to see a girl around her age, with blonde hair. She must be the one bothering me about a pen. “No, I haven’t seen a pen anywhere,” Jade responded briskly, her tone of voice definitely rude, almost dismissive. “Go ask someone else in here, or the librarian. They can help you find it.” I certainly won’t. The thought was clearly conveyed in her tone of voice.

Feeling like the problem was sufficiently handled, Jade returned her attention to her homework, beginning yet another attempt to concentrate despite the distractions that just kept coming up. It was beginning to get a little ridiculous. Why can’t everyone just leave me alone?

Pam blinked, startled by the girl's tone. Okay rude. "Uh, alright..." She muttered and glanced at the papers in front of the girl again, wondering if she was suffering with homework. It would definitely explain her current mood. Although, if she was feeling so snappy, she shouldn't have chosen a public spot to sit in. What did she expect, to see no-one all evening.

Either way, it was n0ne of Pam's business. And she also did not really trust this girl saying she hadn't seen the pen. She didn't seem like she would lie purposely, but Pam had a feeling the girl wouldn't really be bothered to even look. She was practically itching to check the ground around the table, and sneaked as close as she could without disturbing her too much, scanning the grounds for a flash or anything purple.

After her rather lame attempt proved to be a failure, Pam figured she could leave. She frowned, feeling a little uncomfortable, and quickly turned around to leave, Well, best to not stay here if I can't find my pen here. I wouldn't want to bother the girl.

And so she made to move away, and since Lady Luck was not on her side, ended up tripping over one leg of the chair the girl was sitting in and smacking the girl across her head.

Oh, I'm so dead.

Jade let out a yelp of surprise as someone - the girl who’d been asking about a pen, she distantly realized - ran into her, smacking her in the head and sending her tumbling out of her chair and onto the floor. She landed awkwardly on the ground, anger already starting to surge up inside of her. How dare she! What was she even doing, anyway? Jade didn’t understand why the other girl had still hung around the table, after Jade had told her the pen wasn’t here, or why she had been so close to Jade’s chair. But the reason was obviously not good, whatever it was.

Jade got to her feet, her face flushed with a mix of embarrassment and anger. “You better watch what you’re doing next time!” She exclaimed in a whisper-shout. It was still the library, and Jade did not want to get in trouble for talking too loudly on top of everything else. “You’re lucky I didn’t end up hurting myself,” she grumbled, angrily readjusting her robes. As it were, she’d probably have a few bruises later.

“What were you even doing, anyway?” Jade asked, giving the other girl a glare. “Why were you - snooping around my desk? Don’t you realize that’s a bit rude?” She snapped. Distantly, Jade realized she was being a little harsh, but she didn’t care. This girl had interrupted her, caused her to fall, and obviously was horribly inconsiderate. All I wanted to do was just get my stupid homework done!

Pam's eyes widened as the girl tumbled out of her seat, and she reached towards her, intent on trying to help her up. However, she was cut off as the girl got to her feet pretty quickly, her face red. Was she embarrassed? Pam would have been too in her place though. "I'm sorry--!" She started, but it probably did not come out loud enough, because she girl spoke over her, sounding disgruntled. Pam noted the fact that although she was clearly annoyed, she had enough presence of mind to speak softly in the library. Okay, respect.

Pam found herself frowning at the girl's words, even if she had good reason to be annoyed, it was still an accident. Why am I so clumsy. Is there an unspoken agreement between my limbs to fall over random objects and into obviously annoyed human beings? She cleared her throat, and said, "Yes, erm, I apologize. I'm pretty clumsy. I didn't mean to hurt you."

The other girl was practically glowering at her and Pam's instincts kicked in, making her flash the girl a sheepish smile. Later on, she would wonder if smiling at the girl in the situation had been a good move. She added, "I'm sorry, I really wasn't snooping, I just wanted to see if there was any pen here."

Jade sighed sharply in frustration. Her initial burst of rage had faded slightly, giving way to an extreme annoyance with this girl in particular. Why did she have to be bothering Jade? She had already told the girl that her pen was nowhere to be found, yet she still insisted on disturbing Jade’s space to look for it. Did she think I was lying about it? The thought brought a fresh wave of annoyance to Jade. How dare she!

It wasn’t like a pen was important, anyway - certainly not important enough for this girl to keep bothering her. If she was truly in desperate need of a writing utensil, the girl could simply use a different one! Get one from somewhere else! Borrow one from a friend! The options that did not include Jade were limitless.

Jade’s annoyance softened a bit - just a small, little bit, she was still very annoyed - as the girl apologized, but it quickly snapped back into focus at the girl’s next comment. "I'm sorry, I really wasn't snooping, I just wanted to see if there was any pen here." What is it with you and that pen!?

“Well, there certainly isn’t one,” Jade snapped. “If there was, I would have told you, and then this whole mess could have been avoided. But I didn’t say anything, so clearly, there isn’t any pen, and you can go about your business now and leave me to mine. If you’re truly in need of a pen, just go use a different one. It’s not that hard.” Jade couldn’t help herself from adding, “Or do you only have one pen?” Her tone wasn’t quite a sneer, but it wasn’t that far off from one.

Pam narrowed her eyes at the girl, feeling a little apprehensive. She wasn't sure why exactly the girl was so annoyed at her, after all, mishaps happened all the time, it wasn't such a big deal. Besides, it wasn't like the girl had passed out, or died, or even gotten a scratch really. I should stop thinking about deaths so casually. Either way, she was fine. Pam glanced at the doorway, already planning her exit. Although she felt a little guilty, she had no reason to linger in this place which had failed to magically reproduce her pen, "Right, well I already said I was sorry, and I'll be leaving anyway."

She turned to leave, attempting to run away from the girl who's bad side she had gotten on, before her next words stopped her dead on her tracks. “Or do you only have one pen?” How do I tell her that I totally don't trust her and that her current behavior was not helping her first impression.

She turned around to face her, feeling a wave of annoyance rising up in her, "Look, I don't have any intention to bother you, I'm not that extra on time. It's also not illegal to search for something. It's not like I told you to get up and move or something. What happened was an accident. Accidents can happen, it's not such a big deal." She inhaled deeply, the girl's last words specifically running over in her head.

Damn, that hits deep for no apparent reason. I don't have only one pen.

She cleared her throat, adding, "Also, no, I do have more pens, but the one I've lost is important to me, that's why I need to find it."

Jade felt oddly satisfied upon seeing that her comment had struck a nerve with the other girl. If she had to show up and disturb Jade’s work, making an already bad day even worse, she didn’t get to have a good day either. Still, even with her satisfaction, Jade was still incredibly frustrated. So frustrated that it took her far too long to come up with a suitable snappy response.

“Well, since you have more, I recommend you go use those, since as I’ve already said, your pen is clearly not here,” Jade snapped. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have homework to be doing.” With that statement, she sat back down in her chair and looked at her notebooks. All filled with homework. All the homework she still hadn’t done. This is going to take forever at this rate, Jade thought, irritably. I’m never going to get any of this done! Never mind the fact that the obnoxious girl still looking for her pen was still around.

“Ugh… this is pointless,” she muttered. “Absolutely pointless.” Suddenly everything - not just the obnoxious girl, but everything, the other people in the library, the giant pile of homework on the table, the sounds of people flipping pages as they read - it was all too much. I just - I just need to get out of here!

Jade slammed her notebook shut and hurriedly gathered her supplies. She was so frustrated she almost dropped her pens several times, which only made her more irritated. When she finally had all of her belongings, she stormed out of the library, brushing past the obnoxious girl on her way out.

What a wretched - absolutely wretched - day.
