The 14th Attempt of the First Letter PV Avery Gray

I usually don’t have difficulty writing letters to my friends and family.

Usually when I write, I have a set purpose, like asking for a restock of milk, or asking when the homework is due.

Writing to a new person I barely know shouldn’t be that hard I would think, but I am finding difficulty in expressing myself.

I apologize for the bluntness- I am unsure how to begin, I know for sure however- that I want to be your friend. Perhaps the best start is the beginning; As you may know I am Curtis Gates, first year Ravenclaw. I am born England and lived a life without magic- and I am absolutely excited about this new experience.

Sincerely, your Quill Pal.

C.G.

P.S. Do Quill Pal’s give each other pen names?

To Curtis,

It's nice to meet you, Curtis. As you may already know, I'm Avery Gray. I am a first year like you, but I'm a Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw.

I was born and raised in the town of Swansea, Wales until the age of three. At the age of three, my parents and I ended up moving to London, England where I reside now. Since I am a pureblood, I have grown up around magic, and I can understand the excitement that magic has.

Since you have never grown up around magic, what's your favorite part about it or what is your favorite part of Hogwarts so far?

Your Quill Pal,

A.G.

P.S. Pen names sound like a fun idea!

Favourite part has always been exploring the castle- and even classes! It feels like its straight out of a fantasy book or movie. I've never gone into a castle before- let alone lived in it!

I've been in Alpington most my life, though I've came by London on holidays and such, I've visited the castles then before, but I was quite young- maybe 3-5? I don't really remember them as much.

I didn't know there are magical families that's straight up living in England though! How is it like? Do you have your own secret magic communities? Or do you just live in similar day to day houses?

I shall also think of a pen name when eureka strikes!

Sincerely, your Quill Pal.

C.G.

To Curtis,

It really is like a fantasy book! I always loved reading those kinds of muggle stories! My old friend used to lend me tons of those kinds of books! The castles here in London are breathtaking too! That is probably the one thing I enjoy about London.

As far as magical families, there are a lot of us that live here in England, Ireland, and Wales. Actually, I have friends and family in other countries too! I guess you could say magic is a whole world thing. It's actually really fun to grow up around magic. It's quite useful, and it's fun to watch!

Before my family had to move, we had a really nice house in a small wizarding community in Wales. There are some towns like Godric's Hollow or Hogsmeade, but there aren't a ton that I'm aware of. Now that I live in London, we pretty much live like muggles unless we are in private. Then we use our magic.

Your Quill Pal,

A.G.

Speaking of- what do you think about our fantasy books? Are they too crazy or are they just right? Maybe they're also written by actual witch and wizards!

That's amazing, I never can imagine another world inside of the pre-existing world, though I suppose I'm in it now so it can't be that hard to believe. What do you think about how we muggle's do things? When I learnt a bit of magic I realise they can be extremely handy and makes what we do horrifically tedious, but perhaps its just a different way to do things? Do you still prefer magic over it?

Sincerely, your Quill Pal.

To Curtis,

Your fantasy books are so interesting! I love the way of how they work! They are so different to books in the wizarding world! I can't wait to uncover more of them since I am kind of a bookworm.

Muggles actually have an interesting way of doing things. When I used to hang out with my muggle friend, her parents were very particular about which silverware goes where. I had no idea what a salad fork was until I had eaten dinner with them.

As for using magic, I still use it even though I know how to do it without magic. Magic makes things so much easier, so that's probably why I prefer it. It gives me a better chance to do things I like.

Your Quill Pal,

A.G.

Haha I'm glad! I suppose its similar to our sci-fi books where it sounds ridiculous but it's bizarre enough it might just make sense in the future.

Ah the silverware! I admit our family doesn't really follow them- 'tis an old tradition. But I think I remember them, I sometimes got to do it when I visit my friends places too or my cousins.

What kind of magic do you use at home? Are you able to teach me some? I suppose I won't be able to use them as often- as you said, without being caught. But I'm still all for giving it a try! Maybe in the future I'll live somewhere where magic is more common.

What made your family want to move to London if I may ask?

Sincerely, your Quill Pal.

C.G.

To Curtis,

That's exactly it! It fascinates me the things that muggles create. Some you your stories are so fun! I love it whenever my father finds a new book for me that I've never read before!

Normally we use magic to move the dishes to the sink or we usually used it to clean the house. Though I didn't really get to do anything since my parents wouldn't let me do magic. I could probably teach you, but I would probably have to read up on it first.

My family was forced to move to London for my mother's job. Though, I don't think it was really the case. I was about three though when we moved, so I can't remember exactly. All I can remember is my parents talking about leaving for work.

Your Quill Pal,

A.G.

What are your favourite muggle books so far? I'm not much of a reader, but if its popular enough I might know it! If not, it might be a good read for me too.

Wow that sounds real handy! I don't like handwashing dishes, a dishwasher is nice though, but we still have to kind of rinse the plates otherwise some hard crusts don't come off.

Ah I think I know what you mean, my family likes where we are right now so it's fine, but I had school friends that I used to go to school together with having to move to another area because of work, I sometimes keep in touch but it's not the same as seeing each other.

Well, I how do you find London? You probably don't remember much since you moved when you're three, do you visit Wales often?

Sincerely, your Quill Pal.

To Curtis,

So far, I believe my favorite book may be the Hunger Games. I love this book probably because I can relate to Katniss in some ways. I love being out in the woods, and I love to explore the woods. She is someone that I would look up to if she really existed.

Since I have lived in London for a while now, I'm used to it, but it just isn't home. Home, for me, is probably still Wales. I loved the freedom I had there. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to visit Wales for a couple years now since my mom won't let me because she is "too busy" to go. I hope to visit there for the summer, though!

Your Quill Pal,

A.G.
