The sweltering heat was going to melt Valkyrja like the Wicked Witch of the West. The weather was apparently a hair over 39°C from what someone around the estate had mentioned and whatever brain cells she’d had in her brain felt like they were falling out and splatting to the ground. People in the house (a modest word to describe their expansive abode) had been bustling around to get all the preparations in place for the incoming arrival of their esteemed guests. While she was usually far more on point with her participation in such activities, she found herself entirely disinterested in the idea of socializing at the moment. She had a feeling her brothers had more interest in meeting this other family than she possibly could.

While the Kapadias tended to frequent London and its respective society gatherings during the summers with her maternal grandmother taking charge of their social schedule, for some reason, they were the ones taking in visitors in their homeland. Valk had her hackles rising and whatever nefarious plots her nani* was concocting and was racking her brain to try to figure out if this was some complicated match-matching attempt yet again for one of the Kapadia siblings. Typically her oldest brother was the victim to her nonsense and even more so since he’d turned 17 it had been a painful year since. The last year had included a plethora of women visiting like a revolving door and he’d send them right back out with some excuse much to her amusement. Her nani was not pleased.

Valkyrja loved her parents dearly but with them off traveling on one of their various escapades often enough, her oldest brother somewhat busy with his beloved career, and her next older brother already at Hogwarts, there were moments where she found herself as the sole child seeking her nani’s attention which left much to be desired. All of this being said, this was the first time that they’d ever hosted someone from the wizard community, and that too directly from London at their Jaipur home. They must have been Slytherins. Purebloods too if she was a child with anything worth betting (she’d bet her sanity if there had been any left).

After wandering through the halls of the extensive palatial house (it was as close to a Jaipur fort as it was going to get) all adorned with rich history plastered on the walls, Valk quickly made her way to the family wing. Her room was by both of her brothers, both of which had stepped out of their respective rooms wearing a silver and green salwar kurta set. Her oldest brother Aashish had a devilish smirk across his face as he and Chandrajit, her other brother, both rolled their eyes at her antics. With a cheeky grin, she pushed into her room and found a dark emerald green choli** set hung up and ironed on the door of her wardrobe. For some reason, their nani thought if she forced them to wear greens they’d be guaranteed into the Slytherin house much to the amusement and chagrin of everyone in their family.

Knowing that she’d have to be presentable, she thought against fully burning the outfit that had been kept out for her and instead duly ignored it. If her nani was going to subject her to socializing with some boy from London (and according to what everyone wanted to remind her, ‘he was her age!’ as if she hadn’t gotten that nailed into her brain by the morning prior), she would be doing so on her terms. Shoving clothes out of her way and sliding them across the hangers, a bright blue kurti** set caught her eye. For an eight year old, it was nothing too crazy but she was at the prime age where she was on the cusp of feeling utterly exhausted of anyone else picking out her outfits.

With the bright blue colors on the salwar and kurti set matching her eyes, she found a pair of matching jhumkas*** and made her way out of the room where she found both her brothers conversing while waiting for her patiently. Aashish raised an eyebrow at the choice of outfit but did not comment while Chandrajit held himself back from letting the laughter escape his lips. “Oooh! You’re gonna be in some deep sh—” “RAJ. SHE’S EIGHT.” “Right. Sorry. Onwards we go then.” Her eyes flitted between the two of them with both towering over her. Boys were weird.

As they all quickly made their way downstairs and to the living room space, she found that her parents had arrived back from their latest adventure and she ran to them despite the protests she could hear in her periphery with something about manners and etiquette. One of those days Valk was going to tell the old lady where to shove those. Not that day but someday. Her parent’s warm embrace wrapped her up like a warm embrace and she could feel the bottom of her father’s 5 o’clock shadow brushing the top of her forehead as he brushed a kiss on hers. Suddenly, her mother’s arms were wrapped around her and they were squeezing each other as if it had been months and not just a few days prior. A tapping shoe in a sharp staccato took her attention away from the family reunion her brothers and their parents were receiving with a sigh.

Hiding behind her father’s shoulder, she hoped and prayed that the change in outfit would go unnoticed. A flutter of movement came from the entrance of the room with an elf popping in with a crackle. A quick exchange indicated that the guests were here. It was time to bring her A game. With her walking in between her brothers and her father behind her hand in hand with her mother, she felt both entirely protected and dwarfed at the same time. Standing nearly a foot or two under her brothers, she was itching for the day when she’d finally be able to reach everything and if she got her mother’s genes maybe she’d be somewhere closer to Aashish’s height. But for now, she was resigned to being a measly four foot and two inches.

Approaching the entrance of the residence, several of the female servants awaited greeting their guests with fragrant garlands. In another’s hands were a thali**** that had specific colorful powders (haldi + kumkum) fit to fulfill the traditions of their Indian household. Her nani was at the front of the group with the rest of the family fanned out beside her in order to respectfully welcome them into their ancestral home. Peeking around her siblings, she glanced at the family trying to take in as much as she could before they all seated themselves. With the commotion of the ceremony, she was mostly unnoticed as she perused the family and the younger boy. She had opinions but they’d been reserved briefly until further notice when she could determine if he was as strange as the rest of the male species her brothers. It was bound to be a very interesting holiday if she had anything to do with it.

AEIOUSA𝖕rat felt like a fish out of water wandering this new country with his parents and the potential sprawling estate his grandfather had talked about. His mind remained occupied with thoughts about the stark contrast between the biting cold of London and the fiery embrace of Jaipur. The enchanted clothes his mother had insisted he wear, only to be refused by him were a missing regret now amidst this alien heat. The vibrant fabrics of the local populace, adorned with intricate patterns, intrigued the creative in him. His father, even after being the ever the social butterfly, stayed around with him and his mother. Both eager to make an impression on their soon-to-be hosts. Prat on the other hand found himself dragging his feet, lost in a sea of unfamiliar faces and customs. The sweltering heat was yet another painful reminder that kept smothering his spirits.

Prat sighed inwardly as he surveyed his surroundings, his eyes darting from one unfamiliar face to another. The air was thick with the scent of sandalwood and the hum of hushed conversations that spoke of secrets he hadn't yet earned the right to learn, or the language. Despite the grandeur of the whole city in general, he felt as if he was a forgotten puzzle piece. Trying to fit into the picture of this ancient and elaborate world that was his stop for the foreseeable future. His curiosity for the exotic beasts of Jaipur was now a buried memory, a yearning that could very well be a child's stubbornness. The adults swirled around his parents, an intimidating tapestry of silk and jewels, their laughter and whispers echoing off, he wondered if all escorts were this chatty, or hospitable for the lack of a worse word. He already began wishing for the freedom of movement their own home provided. Where he could roam around without the constant attention or the need to be tied down to one of his parents. With his parent's attention needed elsewhere, he felt like a small fish in an even bigger pond, struggling to keep his head above the adult's idea of tradition and duty.

Prat's thoughts wandered far and beyond as the adults around him mingled, their words a distant language he understood nothing of. He couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy, his parents were easily conversing while he was left behind. Asked to behave himself, much unlike home where the only expectations placed upon him were to not break stuff or wander too far. Here in the sprawling estate of their hosts, who were frequent visitors to his grandfather's London townhouse, he was about to become a mere shadow. an afterthought in this grand social machination. The only solace he found was having his parents beside him, yet they knew the language and could hold a decent enough conversation. But Prat? He was the youngest there, he could still slip away unnoticed if it wasn't for his promise to behave himself. His mind drifted to the tales of the magical creatures that roamed the outskirts of the city, or so did his mother tell him. He was no longer sure if she meant it or if it was a mere joke from the woman, to scare him away from exploring on his own. If only he could escape this gilded cage, even for a brief moment, and find a piece for himself in the vibrant city.

Prat felt a peculiar sensation wash over him as he slipped into the embroidered white kurta his mother had handed him. The material was cool and welcoming against his skin, as if the fabric itself had a mind and intent to soothe his discomfort. The enchantment kicked in, and suddenly the stifling heat of Jaipur felt as distant as he could hope for. He gave himself a brief smile, savoring the comforting feeling, his eyes lingered on the unblemished white of the garment. This white was truly his color, fashionably enhancing and complementing his darker features. It was in deep contrast to the vibrant colors of the walls and the other locals, but somehow it made him feel more important. And he allowed himself a small smile with that delusion in his mind. Perhaps this trip wouldn't be so unbearable after all, it certainly got better with the addition of this enchanted. He straightened his shoulders and stepped into stride with his father, walking beside the older man. The coolness of the kurta seemed to bolster his resolve, giving him a coolness factor as he muggle cousin would say. He hoped that he too could find something more interesting soon in this overwhelming environment.

As the family approached this grand estate of their hosts, his steps changed into little hops with each passing second. The prior boredom was now exchanged with an innate curiosity as he bare witness to the majestic archways and intricate carvings. They seemed to hold intricate artistry and stories that were as foreign to him as the language spoken in these corridors. A further push for his own hyperactive imagination as stood in awe of their aesthetic.

His father's hand remained the only familiar anchor in this uncharted territory. The roughness of his palm remained a comforting contrast to the silky softness of his kurta. He hadn't seen his father this much in months. The very thought of sharing these moments together filled him with a warmth that was as potent as their bond. With every step closer to the gathering, he held on tighter, drawing confidence from his father's presence and the hidden sweetness within him. His father's holidays plans being his sole reason to even agree for this much regretful trip, he couldn't let even a fraction of his time escape his grasp.

Prat's gaze kept flitting back to the young girl standing a few feet away, surrounded by a flurry of activity yet she seemingly looked as lost in thought as he was. He watched her, even while he gracefully accepted the garlands and the smears of haldi and kumkum on his forehead. Her demeanor intrigued him, at last someone his own age. When the formalities concluded and the adults got momentarily distracted, he saw his chance as he subtly pulled away from the group. Making a beeline for her with the awkwardness of a boy who hadn't quite mastered the art of conversation yet. He walked up to her as he pointed to his chocolate and then mimed the act of eating it. Raising his eyebrows in question. He wasn't sure if this one could even understand him, yet he attempted to go slow. "YOU" "CHOCOLATE" "EAT??"

There were moments when Valkyrja felt like a black sheep in her family. Her parents were well-respected Aurors who somehow found themselves traveling for their various projects or escapades leaving a note sometimes or a quick owl as they departed before the sun had even risen. She’d always know whether they had been at home based on whether she was being woken up with her mother’s melodious voice floating through the corridors or hearing her father’s deep laugh. Everything felt magical when they had the whole family in the estate even if it was simply doing mundane things like eating a meal together with light conversations full of laughter and camaraderie.

Even with all of this, she never felt like she’d particularly fit into her cookie cutter family. She had nothing against them and she was extremely close to each and every one of them, even with a brother that was a decade older than she was. But even then, he’d already graduated and she was still years away from school let alone even discovering her magic. Aashish was already beginning his career as an auror, following their parents' path and her older brother was already at Hogwarts, their parents with him in London more often than not.

Her nani’s gaze was unforgiving. With no one else to parent in the house what with her family away besides during breaks and the summer, they entrusted the matriarch of the house to raise Valk which had played a part in how she felt, how she viewed herself, and her deep desire to get as far away as possible. The more her nani tried putting her into the box she thought the girl should belong in, the less it felt like it made any amount of sense. Sometimes, she found comfort in her father’s arms as the only Gryffindor in the family. The flag of green and silver was flown high in their household and she could feel her impostor syndrome kicking in at moments. She didn’t even know if she would be good enough for the House of Slytherin. She felt fiercely protective of her family but her sense of honor and pride ended there. The thought of disappointing her family scared the hell out of her sometimes.

It was odd being alone in such an isolated but large home. They were far away from Muggles what with elves popping in and out and their plethora of magical employees flitting around the large estate. She’d always loved the tiny zoo they’d had, the peacocks that had wandered the land, and the birds that flocked looking for grains. In the few moments of softness, she remembered waddling after her nani, the calluses of her aged hands holding hers tightly and teaching her how to care for the birds and serve Mother Nature around them. Those memories had been locked away as she’d grown older and her fingers had slipped away from her nani’s grasp.

The walls of the large estate held years of memories, some that she cherished with all her heart and were filled with their twinkling laughter, their family in casual wear curled up on the couch, her head in her mother’s lap as they shared stories of their family and she saw the adventures her brothers were on at Hogwarts. Her parents loved regaling of their missions and expeditions and she could see the stars in her brother’s eyes as that eventually became his future. She remembered her own wonderstruck expressions as she realized how remarkable her family was and how she…. was simply there. Even at eight, it felt like the weight of the world and responsibilities and expectations were still on her shoulders.

Years of tutoring ensued from when she was old enough. She’d been able to tear through Muggle stories as part of her lessons that her nani had insisted upon. A daughter of the Kapadia family would never be caught dead as being uneducated and untrained. She’d felt the ground under her shake from learning how to dance with the rivulets of sweat as she’d found blisters across her feet while learning the complexities of the dance forms of her culture. The arts and the etiquettes were ingrained in her mind and she’d never be able to unlearn them. All to prepare her for her future, her nani had said and her parents had simply nodded along in their marital bliss. The moments she had with her family, especially her parents were the moments she felt like she was a flower blooming and their presence were the rays of sunshine feeding and nourishing her.

As she walked into the corridor with her parents’ hands both holding one of hers, her brothers protectively behind her as the ever obedient sons, she looked up at them and then made her way to their guests. Her parents did all the talking for the most part introducing the boys and her nani was at the helm with her grandfather no longer around. Her eyes dropped and she shifted to stand behind her brothers letting the rest of them take the forefront. Her eyes flit to the large windows beside the entrance hall and she longed to go play in the yard and maybe find some monkeys to bother or birds to chase. And yet, she was forced to greet this London family and their son. Some things would never be changed. Her expectations for the trip were fairly low but one could hope.

No one thought too hard about it when she was no longer right there since she had been standing behind her father, holding onto his hand mostly out of sight. Her eyes flit across to the other tall adults in the room noticing their attire and she smiled softly seeing that they were also wearing Indian clothing acclimating to the city they were visiting. She loved it when people embraced her culture and she couldn’t imagine wearing one of her fluffy thick ballgowns or seeing her father in a bespoke suit in this weather. Her skin crawled at the idea.

While watching the other family, she noticed all the details standing silently taking it all in. No one expected her to be as observant as she was but as the baby of the family at eight, while she was the most loved according to her mother, they had a new group of people to focus on and greet.

After the customary greetings with the vibrate carnations, jasmine, and roses that had been strung into fragrant garlands adorned around their necks and the kumkum and haldi on their foreheads, her nani and parents ushered them to the living room area for chaat* and chai. It was then her eyes caught hold of the boy finally, one who was gripping his… father’s, she assumed, hand as tightly as she was holding her own. They both seemed to have acknowledged that they were nearly the same age though he looked like he might have been taller but then again they had years to grow so maybe she’d tower over him she thought.

Shaking her head and dismissing her odd thoughts, she turned her head trying to figure out if he was as strange as the rest of the boys she’d ever met and especially comparing him to her own brothers who were wild in her eyes. Both of them seemed to be sizing each other up and as their parents continued walking, they stayed stagnant and the elves around them popped away to go serve the families leaving them completely alone. “Valk, tum tik ho?**” She turned her head and noticed Aashish standing by the doorway waiting to see if she needed anything in their mother tongue. She nodded her assent that she was okay and he paused, eyeing the boy, and then nodded before continuing on.

The strange boy approached her, all gangly and bouncy and she raised an eyebrow watching him in a flurry of motions. She noticed his white kurta and smiled at him in approval realizing that it suited him and his skin tone. So far it was his best feature and she wondered if he was losing his mind. His hands were waving at her and then a brown thing came out of his… she had no idea where he’d pulled that from and she took a step back. Her eyes focused on it and realized it was chocolate and her eyes glimmered with interest but before she could even open her mouth, his signing continued and she was deeply concerned that this family had stolen a mime from the streets of Paris. Was she supposed to find a rupee to throw at him? She was sure her father might have one in his pocket in his kurta… maybe he’d lend one to her.

Once the words *"YOU" "CHOCOLATE" "EAT??”* left his mouth she froze and then pursed her lips to keep from bursting into laughter. She wasn’t sure she wanted to tell him she’d had the best tutors and could speak quite well in a few languages, including sarcasm and of course, English but the moment felt like it was one for the books. For a moment she was almost tempted to reply to him in Hindi not sure if he’d understand a word but instead, she kept her expression blank looking at him like he was an idiot. She realized that according to her research, he was in fact quite strange… like the rest of his species.

Putting him out of his misery, she finally grinned at him like a Cheshire cat and replied, “I” “EAT” “CHOCOLATE!!” and then cleared her throat with a laugh hidden behind it (it was not a subtle laugh) and continued, “So how long have you been in mime school? You might wanna consider a different job. Maybe a clown? I like watching them at the circus!”

She was laughing now and walking backward after snapping off a piece of the chocolate he’d been pointing to and popped it in her mouth. She walked backward towards the living room area knowing her nani would come snooping if she didn’t make her way soon. Looking at him expectantly, she was grinning at him. “You wanna come with? Or… maybe we can go play outside?” She knew if he suggested it, her nani would agree which made her eyes roll but she wondered what kind of boy he was. Would he join her or would he go sit with the boys and ignore her like the rest of the ones she knew did? She was full of curiosity all of a sudden, her earlier disinterest nowhere to be found.

AEIOUSA𝖀nlike Val, Prat was the apple of his family's eye, the sole focus of their love and attention. His mother's gentle melodies and father's hearty laughter had always been a constant in his life, always there to greet him upon waking up. The voices of his grandparents' stories filled the halls of their mansion, each word an attempt to pass down their knowledge and unwavering pride to their only grandchild. He had grown accustomed to the warm embrace of belonging as a child early on, the comfort of knowing that he was the star in their narrative. In his own home, he had always been the sun, the gravitational force that held the attention of his family in its orbit. Every reasonable wish was his to claim, every comfort provided without resistance.

However there also came moments where without choice he could feel the weight of his lineage pressing down upon him. Every corner of their residence was a reminder of the legacy he was born to uphold. It was a role he had been groomed for from the moment he began to grasp the tangible world around him, fashioned to be the perfect heir his grandfather had so meticulously envisioned in his own son and failed. Amidst this tradition and , there were hints of a subtle dissonance that even Prat had grown accustomed to over his years of growing up. He was aware the love and attention they showered upon him were as much a part of the family's duty as they were genuine affection. He knew deep down that his place in their hearts was often tied to his potential, to the future they hoped he would one day achieve.

It was a silent pact, woven into the very upbringing of his, dictating that he would be the one to continue their lineage. While he cherished the warmth of his family's embrace, the attention and affection towards him, there was a tiny part of him that wished for something that transcended his destined role. He silently wished for a future where he was valued for simply being ,not just the next title holder to the family's storied name.

His grandfather's stern gaze, unyielding expectations and his usually valid opinions had been the compass that would guide his path in early life since he could remember. The old man had taken over the mantle of his upbringing when his parents were swallowed by their demanding careers, leaving their son in the care of his grandparents. The mansion was a bastion of discipline and tradition, with every crevice built to be less a residence and more a visual that could display his pride in all that coursed through his veins. Yet, amidst the cold exterior and unyielding expectations, there was a slight warmth that Prat clung to – the belief that he could make his grandfather proud, or rather the fear of failing him. He never questioned the endless hours of tutoring, the rigorous sessions, or the silent dinners where his every action was under watch. The fear of disappointing this one person was a specter that haunted him, urging him to push beyond his limits.

Prat often found his thoughts drifting to the dichotomy of his family's beliefs. His grandfather's purist views of the wizarding world painted a stark contrast to his parents' more progressive stance about it. He recalled the whispers of his aunt's muggle marriage, the gentle way his mother spoke of her sister's choices, enriched in enjoyment rather than acceptance. Prat's heart swelled with confusion as he tried to reconcile the warmth of his parents' love with the cold shoulder his maternal aunt would often receive during family gatherings after making her choices. He couldn't bring himself to despise muggles, not when the very essence of his aunt's happiness was intertwined with one. Despite the mansion's echoes of pure-blood pride, Prat felt a quiet pull towards the more inclusive world his parents were in support of, a world where love was not tainted by the prejudices of those rooted in the past.

In the quiet recesses of Prat's mind, the muggle world beckoned with a strange, different connection that his grandfather's estate could never quite match. Memories of the handful of times he had ventured beyond , into the realm of the non-magical, were like beacons of joy and freedom. The humble abode of his aunt and her muggle husband was a beacon of simplicity and peace. He could still feel the thrill of sitting in a car for the first time, the wind rushing through his hair as he sped down a country lane with her husband on a bike. Or the awe of watching television, where moving images told tales of a world so vastly different from the one he knew, their imitation of how magic worked even worse. The muggle games, so primitive for his taste, yet intriguing all the same, they sparked in him a curiosity for the unexplored.

These experiences were a secret, nurtured by the gentle aunt of his. He marveled at the way muggles built bridges with nothing but their own two hands, the way they painted with colors that didn't move, and the music that didn't require a wand to play. It was during those visits did he feel a connection calling him towards the muggle inventions. He hoped, with all his heart, that one day his grandfather could see the beauty of these creatures he deemed beneath him, wishing he too could experience the simple magic of a world that didn't need spells to be enchanting. But for now, these thoughts remained his secret.

Prat these days found his thought usually stumbled upon the whispers that danced just beyond his hearing. The hushed tones of his grandparents' conversation, the furtive glances exchanged between them. He hadn't had his First instance of magic yet, and the silence grew heavier with every passing moon. In the quiet of his room, he could feel the doubt his grandparents harbored – the fear that he might turn out to be a squib, a failure to their lineage. Yet, his grandfather remained steadfast in his words, his voice a beacon of denial for others, yet one of support for the nine year old. "He just needs more time," the old man would insist, his eyes gleaming with a fierce protectiveness that made Prat's heart swell with hope and dread in equal measure. "He will grow into his role," he declared, as if speaking the words could will the magic into existence. He clung to the belief that his grandfather had placed in him, Each day was a silent battle, a struggle to find the spark within himself that would prove them all wrong.

Prat's eyes widened as he stepped into Val's Nani's house, a whirlwind of new smells and unfamiliar warmth approached him. His father's firm grip around his hand offered a semblance of comfort, but it was truly the promise of the outside world from his mother that truly intrigued him. The stories of the exotic animals and the beauty of the gardens called to his adventurous spirit. He wanted nothing but to run towards the grass and play around in it, yet, the weight of his own duties clung to him like an invisible cloak, reminding him of task duty to mingle with their hosts. To be the approachable and poised young wizard he was expected to be. Even as his heart raced at the thought of discovering the wonders that lay beyond these walls, his feet remained rooted to the floor. He could not even in his right mind defy his grandfather's expectations, the silent disappointment that would etch itself into the very essence of their relationship. And so, with a heavy sigh, he turned his gaze to the faces of their host family, burying his intent for adventure beneath a mask of polite interest.

As the adults mingled, sharing pleasantries and stories of their journey, Prat waited patiently for an opening to approach the new kid. The moment presented itself when the conversations grew louder, and the room was filled with the clinking of teacups and the laughter of distant adults. He took a deep breath, Slipping away from the throng of adults, he approached her, his steps tentative yet filled with purpose.

Prat felt a slight flush of embarrassment creep up his neck as he realized he messed up. He had made a fool of himself, assuming she would be as uncouth so as to not be able to speak his language. He had been taught to be graceful under pressure, a trait that had served his ancestors well in the past. With a mental shake, he cleared his thoughts, reminding himself that he was not here to pick fights or succumb to childish antics. He was out of his element, He took another step closer, his hand still extended with the chocolate in his palm. He said, his voice a tad softer, "Take it."

As Val took the piece of chocolate , Prat couldn't stop himself from letting out a soft giggle. Her comment had caught him off guard, piercing through the armor of his self-consciousness. Her playful jab about mime school and the suggestion that he might be better suited for the circus as a clown made him think she was a recruiter. With a cheeky grin, he replied, "Have you seen the circus I attend as audience? It's quite the spectacle, maybe it's the same one where you practice your comedy routine as their resident joker?" His eyes twinkled with mirth as he took in her reaction, finding himself surprisingly at ease with the unpredictable current of their banter.

When she invited him to explore the place with her, his heart leaped with slight excitement. Here was a chance to explore so different from the one he had grown up yet as exquisite and grand. He nodded eagerly, his thoughts racing. "Yes," he said, "I'd love to, Let's go." And as they moved towards the door, running to catch up beside her. He had no idea what them wherever she was taking him, but he was surely looking forward to finding out.

Prat's took in the vibrant scene around him. He had heard tales of people keeping zoos or collections of pets at their home, but the prospect of seeing these majestic creatures up close was exhilarating. He glanced at Val, attempting to match her energy and excitement. "Do you have peacocks here?" he inquired, hoping to keep the conversation light and casual. His grandmother had often spoken of the exotic birds that roamed the grounds of their estate, and he was always left fascinated by their beauty. But it was the mention of food that truly piqued his interest. His stomach rumbled at the mere thought, betraying his curiosity. "And is there something for us to eat," he added, trying to keep the eagerness from his voice, "I'd love to sample the food to make sure it's tasty."

Moments later, Prat's eyes lit up with wonder as he took a bite of the crispy samosa, the flavors of spiced potato and peas exploding in his mouth. It was a taste so far removed from the food of his usual taste palette, equally rich and alive, yet touched with the essence of a world he was yet to discover. He had followed Val through the bustling halls, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and anxiety. The house was alive with the vibrant chatter of what felt like a thousand different worlds to him, and he felt a thrill of seeking adventure with every step he took. The courtyard she had mentioned was like a secret garden to him, As they approached the doors that led to the courtyard, the sounds of these exotic animals grew louder, and he could feel the anticipation building within him, his excitement ready to jump out at a hair's trigger. He took another bite of the samosa, savoring the warmth and crunch, and whispered a silent thanks to Val for inviting him on this tour, for offering him an escape from what could've been a stifling gatherin with the adults. As he stepped out into the sun-soaked yard, the smell of unbridled life filling his nostrils, Prat allowed himself time to soak it all in.

In the middle of the bustling yard, Prat's excitement overtook his usual poise. He jumped around Val, his eyes wide with wonder, as he fired questions about the inhabitants. "Do you have lions here? Back home, my grandpa has a place with lions, you know! They're so majestic, like super big," he gushed, his voice filled with a childlike enthusiasm that had been buried under layers of stoicism. He went on to tell her about the horses they had at their estate, his voice softening as he spoke of his favorite, a white stallion named Icarus. "He's the fastest in our stables," he said with a touch of pride, "I've ridden him a few times, when Dad was there to keep watch and other times when he wasn't looking." The memory of those stolen moments of freedom brought a smile to his face.

As Val continued their conversation, Prat found himself imagining the camels they had seen earlier, their majestic forms swaying as they carried locals around through the streets of Jaipur. He let his curiosity get the better of him, as he leaned closer to her, his eyes lit up with wonder. He whispered, "Do you think the camels from the street would ever come here? I've never been so close to one before, and they seem so... fascinating." The idea of such a creature, a creature from his mother's stories was almost too thrilling to fathom.

Prat felt a twinge of nostalgia as he thought about Icarus, his heart's yearning for the wind in his hair and the thrill of speed as they galloped across the fields. He watched Val as she interacted with the animals. He wished to share the majestic sight of Icarus, and the simple joys of riding his horse, the unbridled freedom that came with it. Perhaps one day, when the time was right, he would find a way to introduce her to him.

As per expectations with guests, Valk was almost certain that she would have been dragged against her will to be a good daughter and be attentive. Quiet unless spoken to, following proper pureblood etiquette, most of which made her roll her eyes so hard, her Nani was sure they were going to fall out of her head. There were some buttons to be pushed and knowing hers would be pushed, she enjoyed doing the same. Badla* as her brother had so eloquently whispered in her ear once and had been their shared secret.

The family had disappeared to the living area and she could vaguely hear her nani and parents guiding the family through the vast halls, giving them a tour of the place. As per the usual traditions or maybe it was nosy behavior, she could never tell, it seemed like people loved seeing all the nooks and crannies of another person’s living place. It was something that she’d never understood and her mother had shaken her head with a grin telling her she’d know when she grew up. Valk had thought she was crazy. At what point in her life was she ever going to care about if there was a dustball on top of some vague shelf somewhere? Shrugging at the thought, she let the adults do their thing knowing that they’d have at least a while before they’d all settle into the living area to chatter on about. Adult things they said.

Facing the boy in front of her, she did her best to hide her humor but his plethora of expressions that had crossed her face had made it hard to keep her amusement from him. She hadn’t meant to embarrass him but she’d been hiding her emotions from her family for far too long and the dam had burst. He’d become her unknowing collateral. She bit the inside of her cheek as she noticed the blush on his skin and smirked.

Seeing his olive brand, she thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate as it melted on her tongue. She had been curious if he’d brought this from his home especially knowing that most Indian sweets were made of things that weren’t chocolate but…. were delicious. Her eyes closed momentarily as she took in the taste and rich flavor missing her time in London with her parents at their other estate and knew that in the next few years, it would be something of more permanence. She’d miss the vibrancy of India and the variety of foods and things to do, her freedoms, and the constant change of the city that the moody one of London barely encompassed.

Valk’s eyes took him in and all of his expressions carefully noticing his seeming embarrassment and his quick adaptation to his laughter. There was a sense of innocence at that age that she enjoyed. While she’d been forced to grow up in ways that had been quicker than expected, in moments like this she knew she felt safe. And it was a new feeling, one she rarely felt except with her brothers. The young girl wasn’t sure what to make of it but pushed the thought aside for a later time.

Quickly, her mouth moved before she could think about censoring herself and the quips left her lips rapidly. He thought he was smart and she had two brothers. All boys seemed to think they were all that and it appeared he was no different. She’d casually called him an amateur mime and of course, he blabbered something about being a joker at a circus. Her eyebrows raised at him. Was this his best retort? “Using my own jokes on me? Tsk Tsk. Your species is very strange I think…” Maybe it was all boys, or maybe she’d been lucky or unlucky to be surrounded by strange ones like him and her brothers. The lot of them were all odd but then again so were most people at the age of eight. She was grinning at him nonetheless, slowly warming up to him after seeing his matching expressions. They both seemed to be comfortable around one another but maybe it was just her easy take on him.

─── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚. ───

Her shoulders had been tight and she’d been waiting in anticipation to see what kind of boy he was. She’d almost prepared herself for him to be as uptight as the rest of the society ones she’d seen robotically trailing after their parents and maybe he was one with well bred etiquette but she also realized they were kindred spirits. Both explorers and adventures. Innocent really maybe even despite circumstances. She wasn’t sure how he’d been raised but knowing that he was likely to be a Pureblood based on her limited eavesdropping, she took all of this into consideration and nodded toward the hallway where her brother had been leaning against earlier while checking on her.

She’d heard the words 'I'd love to' and had stopped tuning in besides hearing his assent. With a quick movement, she stole another piece of chocolate and popped it in her mouth before moving away backward to the hallway their parents had disappeared through. He easily caught up to her and without thinking too hard about it, she grabbed his hands not caring too much about propriety, and tugged him towards the gathering room, zipping by most of the halls. She’d been raised here for her entire life and all of it was scenery she knew like the back of her hand. If the fort was like the Minotaur’s, she was Daedalus and their destination was the center of the maze. Quickly scampering in that direction, she grinned, occasionally looking over her shoulder moving them as fast as her short legs could take her. A sudden excitement to show him her house and the wonderful and vibrant sights had suddenly made this visit so much more interesting.

Without any kind of warning, she came to a full stop and released his fingers unconsciously. Her mind was whirring and realizing the implications and not wanting either of them in trouble, especially when she was about to make a big ask. In the time they’d been casually chatting, the families had found their respective ways to the seating area, all spread out on low baithaks*, comfortably conversing with warm chais in their hands and small plates filled with sweets and savories. She noticed the steam wafting above the fine china and smiled knowing that it smelled like home. The spices were rich, warm, natural, and strong. The aroma spread around the room until she could tell that it had just been prepared and in between were slivers of the scent of warm veggies and corn syrups which she knew were used as fillings for the samosas and kachoris* and that the gulab jamuns* had been dipped in.

Her mouth was watering but she noticed all eyes had been on their sudden burst into the room. Her brothers of course had mirth in their eyes and matching smirks as they looked between each other and then back at her. Her father’s eyebrows were raised with a hidden grin just for her and her mother of course looked expectant but lenient. She wasn’t sure what to make of his parents yet since she knew nothing of them…. nor did she particularly have an interest in adults. But of course, she could feel her nani’s boring stare into the side of her skull and her chin dipped out of practice and respect. Maybe even a bit of ingrained shame, though she wasn’t sure why.

Turning her head, she looked over at the boy and found her resolve. Straightening her shoulders, she looked up at her mother and father, and in a much softer tone giving them her most innocent look, she inquired, Kya me use baahar le ja sakata hoon?* While she didn’t know how the other parents would react, she knew if she asked them, and they replied, it would likely make her family and the guests both uncomfortable. Her eyes were filled with muted excitement and hope and she held her hands in a prayer form, closing them together and widening her eyes dramatically.

A soft laugh fell out of her father’s lips and he nodded his approval, her mother leaning into him and softly smiling. She lifted her chin as if to indicate to take care of him properly and looked over at the appetizers. Her fingers reached and she quickly put two of everything before handing it off to Valk and sending them on her way. Of course, her nani was looking at her like she was a devil spawn. She’d already gotten her way and all eyes were on her so she resisted the urge to stick her tongue out. She might have won the battle ignoring her nani and going to her parents but she knew she’d have to be careful.

Before she could leave, her mother’s voice casually fell behind her in a soft reminder. Voh hamaara mehamaan hai, iska dhyaan rakhana.* Her eyes were serious on her daughter and Valk quickly nodded her understanding, again holding back a smile. Thank god this boy didn’t seem to understand the back and forth. She wanted to take him on an adventure, for him to remember this trip and remember her. In fact, she was going to make sure of it.

─── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚. ───

Being the extraordinary host that she was in her nani’s wildest dreams, Valk realized that while she knew this house like it was… well hers, this boy probably had no clue where the heck they were not to mention how many directions there were in the large estate. She thought it might be nice to give him the general tour before taking him to her favorite areas outside. They could examine dustballs in vague corners later or count cushions later. Whatever it was that adults did. There had been a low mahogany table that was sleek and the perfect place to stash the snacks her mother had left them while she gave him the quick tour, eyeing them and knowing that they’d be back soon.

She turned back towards the boy and nodded for him to follow her. Her hands were behind her back and she casually walked through the halls, her hands occasionally gliding across the white walls. They’d lost their pearly shine ages ago but there was history and stories that she knew of and many she’d never know existed before her. Paintings and sagas were splashed across the estate, each sharing bits and pieces of the past, the secrets that the walls whispered, and the occasional breeze of wind caught them.

It was a fairly open style with terraces and pillars scattered across the property. The arches and the building were gorgeous and she could see the sky and the bright vibrancy of this city. Despite knowing that the city and world were at her feet the moment she stepped out of the large iron gates that kept them protected, she could feel how tiny she was in such a big world.

Inserting words here and there, she attempted to tell him as much as she could about this place she’d grown up in, regaling him with fun stories about the royals of her bloodline who’d apparently resided there and ruled or something her grandmother had told her and she’d attempted to parrot to him. There was an innate sense of pride despite moments of her upbringing of sharing this secret and intimate part of her. She hadn’t realized it till then but she enjoyed telling him all these things and hoped he was as excited as she was to see all of the sights.

Her fingers pointed at parts of the city in the distance as they climbed up higher in the fort, their tiny statures attempting to look over the rails. Her eyes closed for a moment as she felt the wind kiss her cheeks and she let her hair fly behind her as the breeze danced with the strands of her thick pitch black hair. The blue fabric sparkled against her tanned skin and she could feel the soft jingle of the jhumkas as she continued on.

Valk turned her head to look at him and smiled softly, simply enjoying the silence and the pleasant weather. Her eyes finally properly took him in. He wasn’t too tall from her perception she thought her oldest brother was a giant towering over her in retrospect and was even more surprised to realize that she thought he looked very well dressed in the traditional Indian garb. The white material against his skin under the Jaipur sun stood out and the soft material was a good color. Not one she’d expected but it seemed to suit him. She distantly wondered if he also wore a lot of green and her expression fell for a moment as she looked away and back towards the city.

The fort/estate was in a bubble of its own from her view. While it wasn’t in the epicenter of the city, it felt like she could see everything from all the different views. The architect of the historical manor had left his mark on the care and detail in the buildings. The manor had long loved the land, for its stone carried the memory of its creation long ago. Each arch was symmetrical, all a creamy ivory color, slowly changing with the sun and passage of time, showing its age. It had withstood the test of time and still hosted her eons of family. The buildings around the property closely embraced theirs and she could see the vivacious nature of the city she called home. As her fingers glossed over a nearby pillar, she knew that this view was uncontested, especially with a warm cup of chai wafting from her parents' cup as the sun rose or as it tucked away for the night. Her favorite moments had been lying outside with the stars twinkling and waving back at her, their own stories and mythologies intertwined with hers.

After a few more moments of pointing out a few more things from her family’s courtyard and the city beyond it from the verandah they’d found themselves on, she carefully pulled him back towards where their destination was, taking him down a few other hallways, giving him more to see. She was softer now and showed him all the pillars as they passed by a few animals that were in the grass. A few rooms with all kinds of things in them. A musical room full of classical Indian instruments, a room that she’d learned to dance and practice in, the vast library, and a few other rooms, each with its own patterns and bright color schemes, all somehow well coordinated. A few had been renovated and modernized for events but the majority had been left as is to encapsulate the history and lineage of the Kapadia family. Her nani and their ancestors would have had an aneurysm had anything else been altered, even if the current renovations had been her own doing. Valk had been tempted to disagree purely on principle but knew better.

They walked back towards the entrance together and she answered his questions, nodding at his excitement. She hadn’t realized how much energy she’d exuded and realized how overwhelming that probably was. Reeling it in, she smiled at him softly and pointed toward the grassy courtyard that was in the middle of the estate. There were several exotic birds, all with feed surrounding a few of the servants and staff. She could see a few stray animals, birds of all natures flocking and screeching in their various languages and a few peacocks peacefully stalking by, pecking at feed at their leisure. “We have peacocks here, parrots too! I think it’s called an airy or… a rarity?* She hadn’t been too sure so she shrugged and focused on the pretty birds. Her eyes were fixated on the feathers as they gently fluttered before spreading into several shades of blues, browns, and greens, all brightly catching the sunlight. The proud birds strolled around as if they were the rulers of the estate and not simply guests or frequent visitors.

“There’s quite a few animals who are on the property here and there. Some to see, some to feed, some to pet, and some to simply admire but keep distance… unless you’re fond of not having all your fingers and toes.” Her voice was full of humor, casually quipping at him. Her default setting was humor and sarcasm and hopefully, he’d match her energy but it would be a first. Especially of a visitor.

The two of them came back to where they’d been earlier and she found the plate full of their snacks, extending her hand to him as he’d so graciously done earlier with his chocolates. She’d appreciated the olive branch if you will and was extending one of her own in the form of Indian snacks and sweets. They were staples of her culture in her quite humble opinion (she’s clearly so humble), and wanted nothing more than for him to see how delicious they were. Something to share with him. He seemed to have grabbed hold of a samosa first and she grinned in approval. He clearly had good taste, just like her. Samosas were flaky but full of flavor. Her fingers grabbed another on the plate and she showed him the chutney* options, a green spicy one and a brownish tamarind flavored one. There was nothing like this in London and she almost frowned wondering if he’d been subjected to such poor bland food all his life and if he’d been missing out on such delicious offerings. She’d have to educate him. “That’s a samosa. It is delicious. You have to like it because it’s perfect. And I know best. I’m always right. Try the chutney if you like!” Her words were firm and confident leaving no room for argument.

They were both standing together in the hallway and she showed him all the different sweets, each more colorful than the last, a few of the more savory items to balance the sweet syrups that were sticking all over their fingers and soft lips and she was laughing in merriment with him. Once the plate was left with nothing but a few crumbs, she set it down and casually but deviously looked over at him. “So… do you wanna see some cool animals with me? I think if you’re nice to me, I might even introduce you to my favorites. And if you’re especially cool, I might even let you ride an elephant with me.” She knew she wasn’t playing fair but if this was going to be her only opportunity to hold this kind of all mighty power, what kind of idiot eight year old would she be to not take advantage?

She beamed at him with his soft thanks and she felt the same way, grateful they wouldn’t be forced to sit and hear their parents drone about whatever the heck parents spent hours yammering about. His eyes seemed wide as he continued crunching the last samosa that still remained in his hands and she smiled behind her hand, allowing him to soak it all in. There were moments when the switch from London to Jaipur had been jarring. Going from a rather bland and morose city to one full of chatter, vibrancy, and well… life, she couldn’t imagine what it must be like for someone who might not have seen such a place before. Fanatical or mystic even she supposed. “How… are you liking Jaipur so far?” she asked almost hesitantly, wondering what his impression had been but also genuinely curious what he thought.

Leading him towards the courtyard, closer to the animals, she stopped in her tracks and gently offered some of the seeds to the nearby birds, most of them fairly comfortable with humans for some reason. It softly pecked her skin as it nibbled and then hopped away. She continued towards the animal enclosure across the estate, crossing the entirety of the courtyard, through another hallway, and towards the stables and pseudo zoo.

As they neared closer, it seemed like he could sense it and his entire personality flipped on its axis. She could barely blink before he was spurting words and she was doing her best to keep up with his excitement. His jumps and hops were like a bouncing bean though she wasn’t sure what flavor he’d be. Shaking her head from her thoughts, she raised both eyebrows at him, sensing that he’d found something to be excited about and she was more than happy to show him the ropes.

“A lion? More like a big cat’s cage. We have pretty white tigers in India and there’s a big lion with a floofy mane, two even! I like the tiger better… she’s prettier. Her paws are so BIG! I wish I could pet her and that she wouldn’t eat me. I think we’d get along swimmingly…. besides that part.” Her face was slightly sullen and she wondered if the tiger’s fur was as soft as it looked. “Ooooh, and we have a pretty panther too! It’s just a cub though, but sometimes my dad takes me with my brothers to feed it! Its name is Andhera*! My dad let me name it!”

Valkyrja was slightly in shock, fully attuned to his words and paying attention to every syllable nodding at all of his regaling with his special horse. She was smiling at him softly, completely understanding what that meant. “You…. like horses too? And you know how to ride them??” Her question was equally as soft and sweet as if left slightly speechless. "We have two horses! Poseidon and Pegasus! Me and my brothers take turns riding them when my nani isn’t looking…. ” She’d been in a Greek phase, one of her tutors telling her stories the PG edition of Greek and Roman myths and educating her through vivid storytelling.

Her lips pulled upwards and she couldn’t resist referencing his prized animal. “Does your horse like the sun?” She hadn’t expected to like this boy much less have anything in common with him. In fact, she’d even prepared to be indifferent to him and let the trip pass by as quickly as possible but something told her that wasn’t going to be the case. In fact, she was mourning their eventual end of the trip. Maybe boys were really weird…. and that was okay.

The two of them were nearly at the animals and she could hear some of their distant roars… but more than that, she could smell them. Some were familiar and some smelled like dirt and other things. She wasn’t sure what to make of it but it felt normal, and natural, and didn’t deter her from going to see her beautiful creatures. Despite them being in gilded cages, she knew they were powerful and deserved respect. They exuded strength and she had been taught from a young age to acknowledge that while they might be easily accessible, they were beasts and deserved admiration and healthy distance depending on the creature.

Her head swiveled and a soft laugh escaped her soft lips before she whispered back as if she were sharing a secret, “Camels? From the street? Why would we bring them here when we can go to them later and ride them around the city… or in the desert and play in the sand?” Her head was tilted in genuine but lighthearted curiosity. “They’re very cool. Lots of fun to ride and very very tall. I felt giant! They’re also…. a bit stinky…” Her nose scrunched for a moment but she noticed his bewilderment and wanted to encourage it. Leaning closer to him, she cupped her lips as if she was telling him something no one, not even the nearby animals could listen in on, “But I think if we behave… enough, we could convince our parents to take us on a little adventure in the city. Would you want to ride a camel with me?” Her expression was open and vulnerable, innocent even, as kids were at that age.

─── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚. ───

There was a soft of wistful look shared between both of them and her eyes flit between him and the animals in front of them. There was a groundskeeper there and an animal tamer or something along those lines to protect the animals as well as them as needed. Knowing that it was well into the day, the creatures had likely just been fed which meant they probably could venture in if they’d like to. She was curious if he’d like to see all the animals native to the country or if he was missing home and feeling nostalgic.

A lightbulb went off in her head and she realized something suddenly. They’d been meandering throughout the house but she had no idea what his name was and she was almost entirely positive that she’d never introduced herself. They’d seen most of her house and she’d generally reacted to him or pulled him here and there with no idea of what to refer to him besides ‘another strange boy’. Maybe it was time to resolve that. “Um… Don’t tell my nani that I forgot to properly introduce myself. My name is Valkyrja Hjörþrimul-Kapadia… You can call me Valk if that’s easier, my brother does too! I’m eight and my nani tells me I have to be a Slytherin. I’m not 100% sure what that is but it involves a whole lot of green! I like blue more though.” She pointed at her kurti and did a little spin letting her hair fly and the tendrils of her hair strands fell into her face with momentum.

Valk was torn between doing something slightly risky that she knew she was allowed to do but she wasn’t sure if he could. They were her family’s guests after all and should anything happen to him, she knew she’d be held responsible. Plus, it seemed that she enjoyed his company and didn’t want to put that at peril. If he was to be whisked away, she would have been troubled if it was her fault. She could only imagine the disappointment from her parents and the anger from her nani. All of it scared her and she dipped her chin down as she attempted to think this through.

At the end of this, she looked up at him and smiled even if it was smaller than earlier, “You never told me your name…. What would our parents say about that? We seem to be quite the pair. Both entirely bored of our parents being such…. grown ups, looking for an adventure, no?”

Her fingers were fidgeting and then she opened and closed her mouth like a fish, suddenly doubting herself before looking at him earnestly, “Do you… want to see my horses? Or would you rather see some of the animals? Maybe we can go say hello to the pretty haathi* in the animal area? The uh…. the ELEPHANT! There are some other cool animals there too, some I could show you how to pet?” Her eyes held his and she tried to decipher his thoughts, wondering what he was thinking about. Hopefully, he liked her ideas or this was going to be a bust. She couldn’t imagine it all ending so early. She had so much to show him. They’d barely just begun!

Prat felt a small sense of relief as he observed the gathering from sidelines, his grandparents' absence created a noticeable gap in the usual rigid family dynamics he was accustomed to. His parents were the ones who truly held the reins of their household, yet it was his grandfather's choices and grandmother's will that often set the tone for similar family occasions. Without them here, the air seemed to smell akin to freedom, almost a gentle breeze of relaxation unlike rapid gusts of wind that could upend one's life or motives.

He had learned to hide his usual disdain or feelings of being uncomfortable or unwilling better, to play the game with a smile and a nod while secretly dreaming of when he could; at the soonest cast aside these customary shackles, and stop playing the role of this perfect son.

While Valk’s Nani led his parents through the cavernous halls, Prat trailed behind them. His mind wandering to the countless times he had heard similar stories recounted several other times by a proportion of people he'd managed to be guests at with his parents. The portraits of distant ancestors, with their olden gaze and their painted eyes, their stern expressions used to be a constant among so many pureblood houses he'd been to. He had long ago gotten used to hearing hosts speak about the details of their lives and their ancestors, the battles they might've had won, and the glories they had claimed or something of the likes, they liked clinging to the past and yapping about it.

Yet, as the tour continued, Prat felt a disconnect to those around him, his thoughts remained drifting to the unexplored lands beyond these high walls. The mysteries to witness out in the world that laid beyond the confines of this huge estate and pre planned tour.

Soon after she accepted his olive branch, Prat watched with a warm smile as Valk savored the chocolate he had offered. He hoped the gesture would help bridge the initial gap between them, and for now, it seemed to be working. Their first meeting, when the sharpness of her tongue had caught him off guard was not the impression he would have started off with if possible. He had not meant to come across as joker or aloof. Prat's curiosity about her only grew stronger.

“Using my own jokes on me? Tsk Tsk. Your species is very strange I think…”

A little smirk played at the corners of his mouth as he listened to Valk's sarcastic remark. To him it seemed like a defense mechanism for her, a way to keep people at bay or she was just that rude and out in the open he guessed. She seemed feisty, and he found it both intriguing and entertaining. They continued to walk, his gaze flickering over the priceless tapestries and ornate furnishings.

Strolling further into the estate, he felt a strange sense of ease that came only from being around someone who didn’t feel the need to put on airs for him. Most of the adults here talked in circles, their words wrapped in layers of unspoken rules and expectations. Val however, he found her quite refreshingly straightforward. Her quips were not layered in backhanded irony or snide remarks.

He found himself looking forward to her reactions as her grandma, kept going on about the grandiose stories. In his mind, he was already rolling his eyes at the old lady. He wondered if she'd have the same reactions or if she was as stuck up as those she was surrounded with. The thought brought him a sense of amusement. A welcome reprieve from the solemnity of the occasion.

Even before their arrival, he had been dreading this trip, the thought of being confined within the suffocating embrace of tradition and propriety was a heavy burden he had carried at his own home for so long.

But the moment he saw someone similarly aged, something within him shifted. Her presence was not a possibility he had predicted and he felt a little less unwilling when showed the prospect of conversing with someone who wasn't as rule enforcing as the adults. The ease of her demeanor was as foreign as it was strange, and the young boy would soon find himself abandoning his usual cautiousness and proper etiquette. The idea of behaving according to his status was now a distant concern, a worry so far away. Replaced by the excitement of getting to know this peculiar girl.

Without missing a beat, Prat found himself being whisked away by Valk, her enthusiasm was contrasting to the solemnity that had been weighing on the london boy. This instance however, he allowed himself to be led, awaiting some sort of excitement as he gave in to the moment. Her grip on his hands was surprisingly firm, yet gentle, and he felt his own heartbeat quicken as they weaved through the grounds familiar to the one leading. The walls of the estate seemed to melt to background as they approached the gathering room. The laughter from conversation inside echoing off the high ceilings.

He pondered the absurdity of it all, feeling somewhat alive in the moment while being dragged along by a virtual stranger, but he quickly dismissed the thought. This was a rare opportunity for him to not have a day that was already planned, a constant set of activities he had to perform or accomplish.

He had always been the composed one, the usually stoic child who was aware where he stood in the hierarchy of the world, his place in said world and played his role impeccably, even as a child. Yet here he was, allowing himself to be led by the whims of a girl who had only known for a few minutes now.

The hallways of her home, seemed capable of transforming into a playground of possibilities, and with each passing moment it was becoming more apparent. Each step they took away from the stifling formalities of the adults' world brought about a sense of liberation within him. He wasn't sure know where this spontaneous escapade would lead, but the thrill of the unknown was invigorating, it was also a new found concept for him as most of the events that occurred in his life, he was aware of.

The thought of being trapped in a room with his parents and their peers, discussing politics and social standings, was quite disheartening for him to think about. The gathering room grew closer, and with it, Prat hoped some much awaited delicacies in the form of food awaited him.

When they entered the bustling gathering room, Valk released Prat's hand without a word, and to him it felt like a strange sense of loss.

He didn't question it, though, choosing instead to focus on the scene set before him. His eyes were drawn to the ornate tea set, the steam rising from the cups hinting at the familiar blend of spices that filled the air, Tea, he was sure that's what it was.

The sight of glistening gulab jamuns, golden-brown samosas, and crispy kachoris laid out on silver trays made his mouth water. The aromas intermingled, creating an inviting vibe. His mind wandered briefly to the quiet moments he had shared with his grandmother in the kitchen, her hands deftly rolling out the dough, filling it with all the ingredients and then goodness, and then baking her cakes to perfection. he allowed himself to revel in the nostalgia, if only for a moment. Before Valk's question to her parents in a language unknown to him, pulled him back to the present.

As Valk disappeared towards her parents, Prat approached his own with anticipation in his stride, hiding nervousness deep down. He knew they would be watching him closely, their eyes assessing every move he made, every word he uttered.

Voh hamaara mehamaan hai, iska dhyaan rakhana.

Turning to his mother with a hopeful expression, he spoke up, "Mom, could I possibly join her in her exploration of the estate?" He tried to keep his voice casual, but the eagerness was evident. His mother looked at him, her smile never wavering, and nodded graciously. "Of course," she said, her eyes held a sense of amusement upon his action that made Prat's cheeks warm. His father, on the other hand, offered a curt nod, his gaze lingering on his wife before returning to the discussions he had been engaged in.

The relief upon gaining his mother's approval washed over him like a cool breeze. He had secured his temporary permissions, and now, all that was left was to join Valk again.

With a newfound sense of excitement, Prat wove through the shallow crowd, making his way back to Valk's side. He didn't know where she would take him, but for the first time in a long time, he chose to let it play out, putting his trust in the new being.

Prat watched silently as Valk's mother piled her plate with an assortment of snacks. He felt his own stomach rumble in response, reminding him of his earlier hunger. He had always had a bit of a sweet tooth, especially for the homemade delicacies that were so meticulously crafted for occasions like these. But he knew better than to indulge in such a manner, that too in public.

These manners had been drilled into him since childhood, and the thought of his grandparents' disapproving gazes was enough to keep his hands from reaching for the food.

Prat felt the warmth of the sun on his skin as they stepped outside, the cool marble of the floor giving way to the soft chill breeze. The grandeur of the estate stretched out before him, the meticulously manicured gardens were the evidence of generations of care that had been invested into maintaining the property's beauty. His thoughts flitted to the endless hours he had spent under his grandfather's watchful eyes, learning the history and significance of every tree, bush, and statue that adorned the grounds near their estate.

They approached the mahogany table, which was indeed sleek and well-positioned for their impromptu snacks to be placed upon. Setting down their snacks, Prat glanced at Valk, he was hoping to eat this snacks the same instant, she however seemed to have different plans.

Walking through the terraces, Prat had a sense of awe at the intricate carvings that adorned every wall and pillar of val's estate. The architecture here was a quite contrasting to the grandeur of his London home, with its arches and vibrant hues that sang the stories of it's native land's rich history. His eyes followed the swirling patterns, tracing them with his fingertips, each line and curve telling a tale, he wasn't sure if it was about love, valor, and wisdom; or if they were just filler text, He couldn't read it afterall.

He thought of the artisans who had painstakingly crafted these masterpieces possibly decades or centuries ago, their passion and creativity was now forever embedded in the very fabric of the estate's reality.

This made his thoughts drift to his own future, wondering if he could ever leave his own mark on the world, one that was as enduring and beautiful as the artwork around him. Prat felt a sudden interest to learn more about this place, to understand the stories that this vibrant city whispered in every corner, to find a way to weave his own mark into the tapestry of the whole world's destiny as a whole.

Valk spoke passionately about her estate, her eyes alight with the tales of her ancestors and the rich happenings of their lives. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and he found himself nodding alongside her eagerly, absorbing every word as if he too was discovering these stories for the first time(he was). Currently. she was acting as a living, breathing embodiment of her heritage, and it was a beautiful experience to witness, a moment that stirred something within him, higher curiousity.

With the chill breeze playing with his hair and the sun casting a golden glow over the estate. The stories of battles and alliances, love and loss, seemed to resonate deeply with the very fabric of his soul. He marveled at the way both val and her grandma spoke of their family with such pride and affection, despite the obvious weights one would assume them to be carrying; weights of their own secrets.

Her openness was a welcome difference in comparison to his own guarded nature, and he found himself slightly opening up, sooner he might even be ready to share his own aspirations with her, to reveal the dreams he had kept hidden beneath a veal, a mask he had maintained for the sake of his title. For now, though, he was content to simply listen, to bask in the glow of her words.

With the wind whipping through his hair as they reached the high point of the fort, Prat felt a sense of weightlessness that was both exhilarating and terrifying to the young boy. He leaned over the rail, the city sprawling out before them like a miniature painting which had suddenly come to life. The hustle and bustle of the streets looked like the scurrying of ants, and the towering structures that had once seemed so imposing now resembled mere playthings. He smiled at how the world shifted perspectives when seen from such a great height. It was as if he was the ruler of a tiny empire, a huge king for a tiny kingdom. The vastness of the horizon, all his to conquer.

Prat's eyes only widened as he took in the panoramic view further, his heart racing from adrenaline in a way that had nothing to do with the exertion of the climb. The height made him feel a strange sense of freedom up here, Looking down upon the world from a place where expectations couldn't reach him.

"So...," he began, his voice just a bit higher than a whisper, "have you always lived here?" His curiosity about her life was growing by the minute. Her estate was so vastly different from his own, yet he could see the same sense of pride and belonging reflected in her eyes as he felt for his own.

He sighed, his thoughts drifting to his own sprawling manor back in London, filled with mysteries and secrets of the past and the weight of his uncertain yet pre decided future. "My family has had our estate for generations," he said, "It's been passed down through the bloodline, a symbol of our lineage and excellence." He paused, his gaze meeting hers. "But sometimes, I wonder if I'll ever truly be able to belong there, or if i could be somewhere else, something else." the last few words almost a whisper, it'd be a surprise if she even heard them.

From the fort's high rampart, the sun's warmth caressed his skin, the vibrant colors of his kurta's mirror-work reflecting the light like a thousand miniature stars. His eyes continued to scan over the vast landscape, noticing the way the light danced across the city's textures—the varied difference between the gleaming modern buildings and the earthy tones of the old city's architecture. The way the merged old with new was fascinating to witness. He stood there taking it all in with Valk as she pointed out the landmarks of her city. Her words painted a vivid picture of a place rich in culture and history, one that he was unfamiliar of. Yet, he found himself intent to explore it all. As the mirrors on his clothing sparkled in the fading sunlight, Prat's thoughts mirrored the vibrancy of the city below.

Soon, Valk led him back downstairs, her excitement seemed to grow with each room she revealed, or that is how it appeared to him. Prat adored the way the light danced off the strings of the sitar in the music room, the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves of the library filled with ancient books and modern wonders, and the intricate work adorning the walls of the dance space, casting a kaleidoscope of reflections. Each space held their own allure, and he found himself drawn to the vibrant colors in the life that seemed to pulse through the very air of the estate.

His own thoughts wandered to the more subdued tones of his own home, his family's estate. The vast library that had always been his sanctuary and playing ground. A music room where he had been taught how to play the piano.

He felt a sudden urge to share this part of himself with Valk (just like kids do, it's called being relatable and showing off), to show her the parallels between their worlds despite the huge distance between the two. "this place is so pretty," he began, his voice carrying the same enthusiasm he heard in hers, "we have a music room and a library much like this back at our place in London. They're filled with history and story books of our own. My parents maintain a huge collection," He went on, describing the grandeur of his home, the multiple books that possible held some secrets of his ancestors, Seeing as he was not allowed to go through them specifically. Their connection seemed to be growing stronger with each shared detail, and he missed to realize how in that moment, the shell he had created over himself was breaking open, and he was letting someone else into his world.

As they descended the grand staircase, Prat was suddenly courageous as he offered a tour to her. "you know" he said, his eyes alight with excitement, "you must come visit us in London sometime. I'd love to show you around our estate. We have a library and music room that I think you would absolutely adore!" The words tumbled out of him, unbidden but earnest. Normally he would not have even thought about sharing his own piece of the world with her or anyone for that matter. Revealing the secret sanctuaries that had been his refuge amidst the rigidity of his own personal life was not a usual occurrence. He hoped she would see the sincerity in his offer, that she knew it was not just a polite gesture but rather a genuine invitation.

Upon reaching the courtyard, Prat's eyes widened with childlike wonder at the sight of the exotic birds that filled the space. He watched as a particularly vibrant parrot perched on a nearby branch, its feathers a riot of colors that seemed to be syphoned out from the very skies above. Valk's enthusiasm was about the birds was a sigh too. Her voice was filled with excitement as she pointed out each species, sharing tidbits of information that she had probably picked up from the adults or her own experiences. Prat felt as if they were gently tugging at his heart strings. An unknown feeling of warmth that spread through his chest. He had always loved animals, finding relaxation in their simple joy and uncomplicated existence, their mundane existence was remarkable. A stark contrast to the complexities of his own life as a pureblood.

"Some of them are quite rare, aren't they?" He knew the value of rare creatures, of things that stood out from the norm, and he wondered where these feathered beauties came from; where their home was.

Approaching the peacocks, their majestic tail fanned out like a crown of jewels, Prat felt a sudden urge to touch the softness of the feathers. He knew he should ask permission, but the excitement in his eyes as he watched the animals was too much to resist. "Could I...pet one?" he asked, his voice tentative.

Returning to spot where they had first placed their snacks, Prat felt a sense of accomplishment, he had managed to explore a whole new place by himself and had not manage to break or ruin anything so far. He had managed to steal himself away from the suffocating embrace of elderly conversations or responsibilities for a very brief but significant moment. This little uncharacteristic taste of freedom and free will was intoxicating. He picked up a samosa, the warm, crispy pastry filled with the familiar yet tantalizingly different blend of spices. As she suggested, "You have to try it with chutney, Prat. It's the perfect pairing." He obeyed, dipping the samosa into the vibrant green spicy chutney and popping it into his mouth. The flavors exploded on his tongue, a symphony of heat and sweetness that he had never experienced before. His eyes widened in surprise, and he let out a small sound of delight.

The samosa was indeed delicious, but it was the dip/chutney that truly made it special. The taste was contagious as it coated his tongue, and as he chewed, he felt his own previous hesitations beginning to crumble. His mind swirled with thoughts of the evening ahead, of the food they would have, and the stories that the adults would discuss within the confines of their aristocratic lives. Prat wondered if this newfound connection would be enough to save the evening and more or would it just be a fleeting memory once they left.

The array of sweets provided to him were a delightful assault on each of his senses, each bite revealed new flavors and textures that danced on his tongue. Prat attempted to maintain some semblance of decorum as the sticky syrup from the gulab jamuns and jalebis clung to his fingers. But the sweetness in those sugary bombs made it difficult to resist them.

When she suggested they go see the animals, something in her tone made him feel as if she had read his mind, this was like getting offered the perfect escape from the monotony of the day's proceedings, lectures about the local culture and then having food was good. But that was definitely not the best things Prat would pick if he could make those choices.

He questioned if the girl who'd accompanied him was also into exploration more or if she was the conversation kind; like their parents and this was merely a favor to keep the guest's child occupied.

However, the promise of riding an elephant was too tempting to pass up, and he found himself nodding eagerly; ignoring all else while a smile played at the corners of his mouth. He knew he had to accomplish it now, even if he had to play along. To be whatever charming and obedient guest she might expect him to be.

Deep down however, he was already planning the mischief he might get into, the elephant ride they could share. The only con was the occasional horrid smell from menagerie that lived around. But in comparison it was a small price to pay for the chance to break into a completely new experience. An unexplored avenue if you would; if only for a short while. He promised to be on his best behavior, not just for the ride, but for every moment he was spending with her.

Prat took a deep breath, the scent of the exotic spices and blooming flora mingling with the sweetness of the gulab jamuns. "Jaipur is..... it's incredible," he spoke gently, his eyes meeting hers. "There's so much to explore yet, and it's been such a refreshing change from London." He paused, his smile genuine, but tinged with a hint of sadness. "But," he continued, "I know in a few days, the novelty will wear off, and I'll start missing the familiar comforts of home." His gaze drifted to the horizon, the sun painting the sky with strokes of gold and pink.

In that brief moment, he experienced a strange sense of melancholy, knowing that soon enough he would have to return to his real self, to the life that awaited him back in the city of grey skies and Colder climate. This trip had stirred something within him, a yearning for a life filled with vibrancy that the whole of world so naturally exuded. He wondered if he could somehow find a way to explore the world more, with this newfound sense of wonder and spontaneity. Instead of going back to his London home, to breathe life into the somewhat routine disciplined life he was beginning to live. Halls that had began to feel more like a golden cage than a home.

"Honestly," Prat began, his voice tinged with a hint of melancholy, "I've always felt torn between the idea of exploring different places and staying at home. London is home, with its order and predictability; it's what i'm familiar with, what i know how things work and how they work. But it's also where the pressure of my grandfather's expectations is heaviest." He sighed, his eyes reflecting the sun. "Sometimes, I wish he could see that I'm more than just what i'll grow into as an adult. I don't want to be micro-managed everyday. I have dreams and aspirations of my own, stuff that doesn't fit neatly into his meticulously crafted plan for me."

His thoughts drifted to the many nights he had spent staring out the window of his home, wanting to live a life unshackled by duty, something more akin to the commoners. "I wish he could be more, more understanding, less... obsessive." He took a deep breath, "But" he added with a shrug, "I guess that's just the way it is." The sun dipped lower, casting a warm glow over their faces, and Prat knew he had revealed more of himself than he had intended.

Upon approaching the enclosures of the big cats, Prat could no longer contain his excitement. His heart rumbled with joy at the thought of getting up close to such majestic creatures. He didn't care if others might find his behavior unbecoming of a young heir; for once, he was going to indulge in the moment.

"WOAH!!" he exclaimed, pointing at the sleek panther that was pacing gracefully in its enclosure. "It's so beautiful! But why did you name it Andhera?" He was genuinely curious about the name, his mind racing to try and decode the meaning behind it, if he knew the language it'd probably help his case. It sounded mysterious, almost magical, much like the girl beside him.

(this is for the filler dialgoue val adds in her post later, i ooc alr know what the word means. Prat does not.)

Prat nodded, understanding dawning on him. The name suited the panther perfectly, and it was clear that Valk had a deep connection with the animal here, you'd expect as much seeing the way she spoke of them, carried herself around the diverse amount of menagerie. He took a breath, the air filling his lungs with the scent of the makeshift sort of zoo they had, a mix of the animals and the earthy aroma of the plants that surrounded them.

This was a side of her he hadn't seen before atleast not from most of pureblood kids he had met during his other visits to various households. It was a refreshing change from the poised and sometimes guarded persona they all were meant to display in their daily life, much like her earlier in the day.

He couldn't stop himself from opening up more, sharing stories of his own life with his favourite buddy on the field, like the one about his horse, Icarus. "He's a beauty" Prat said with a fond smile, picturing the majestic creature galloping through the fields of their English estate. "White as fresh snow and just as fiery." He had always loved the contrast, the way the horse's gentle nature belied its fiery spirit.

Prat looked over at Valk, his eyes still shimmering with excitement from their earlier discussion about the animals. "You know," he began, his voice filled with a hint of nostalgia, "my family has a big ranch in England. It's my mother's pride and joy, really. She started it with her mother as child, and it's become a sanctuary for horses that now have nowhere else to go."

He paused, watching the panther's graceful movements, drawing a parallel in his mind to the horses that roamed his family's land. "We mostly have ones that have been abandoned or can't be ridden anymore, but they're all so beautiful in their own special ways." His thoughts drifted to the rolling green fields of home, the sound of hooves against the ground, and the gentle nuzzles from creatures that had found refuge in his family's care. "It's a place where they can just... be," he confessed, his gaze lingering on the majestic creature before them. "They aren't employed in any kind of work at all either, except eating a lot of grass i suppose."

He missed his horse friend, feeling a pang of longing for the simplicity and quiet companionship he found in those moments with his four-legged friend, sitting under the shade of a tree on his mother's ranch. "I think you'd like it there," he added, his voice softening as he turned to her. "There's something about him that makes me feel so... alive, you know?" The thought of sharing this piece of his world with her brought a warmth to him, him a few days back wouldn't have even considered such an act to even happen.

He chuckled at Valk's playful tease. "Yeah, i'm at a loss of words for that one, but If you really want to know," he continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "you'll have to meet him and ask. He's quite the character." It was a piece of himself that he hadn't shared with anyone outside his immediate family.

Prat listened to Valk's words with a mix of amazement and skepticism. Camels? From the street? The very idea was as ludicrous as it was fascinating to him. In his sheltered life in London, the only camels he had ever encountered were the ones depicted in exotic stories or displayed in the zoo. Yet, the way she spoke of them, with such ease and familiarity, made him feel like he had been missing out on an entire world of adventure. His curiosity was now piqued, he couldn't wait to enjoy the thrill of riding one through the desert, the wind in his hair, and the sand beneath him. It was a easily going to be different from the stately horses he was used to, or what it be similar? The allure of the unknown was undeniable to the young boy since forever.

But as quickly as the thought came, he pushed it aside, reminding himself of his duties (to stay alive and not die under a camel) and the expectations that awaited him back home, he knew he would eventually have big shoes to fill. He couldn't just run off into the desert leaving behind all his responsibilities. No matter how much the idea appealed to him.

Instead, he chuckled softly, playing along with her whimsy. "I think we'd have quite the adventure, my parents won't mind as long as i don't get hurt," he said, his eyes sparkling with the same mischief that danced in his usually when committing as act of mischief.

Prat watched as Valk introduced herself with an air of nonchalance that was both endearing and slightly intimidating. He couldn't help but chuckle internally at her bluntness, a stark contrast to the carefully cultivated manners he had been taught to uphold. When it was his turn, he stepped forward shrugging off her concerns, "Don't worry, I won't tell your Nani, whatever that means" he assured her. "My name is Prat Raphael Pass." He took a moment to appreciate the way the blue of her kurti brought out the vibrancy of her eyes, so unlike the cold, calculating gazes he was accustomed to. "And i think the blue looks absolutely splendid on you." He knew the compliment was unorthodox, but he meant it sincerely. There was something about the simplicity of her attire that stood out amidst the grandeur of the estate. A significant difference from the previously established and expected opulence. The way the fabric draped around herself, the soft hue complementing her complexion. He hoped the words didn't come across as patronizing, but rather as an acknowledgment of truth and not flattery in a world that often demanded otherwise.

Prat's eyes lit up at Valk's mention of horses. "Oh, I would love to see your horses," he said, the genuine enthusiasm evident in his voice. "And then the elephants, of course. They're such incredible creatures." His thoughts swirled with imaginary images of majestic steeds galloping freely across the vast fields of his family's estate, and the gentle giants that were a symbol of wisdom and strength in the books he had read. The prospect of experiencing this part of her world, so vastly different from his own, was exciting. He thought of of how refreshing it would be to leave the stuffiness of this place behind and go on a trip, if only for a short while.

As for the food, Prat was already smitten with it. The kachori's warm, spicy taste had been a delightful surprise, and he found himself craving more as more time went on. "And perhaps," he added with a hopeful smile, "we could indulge in a few more of those delicious kachoris along the way?"

With every passing moment, Prat felt the tension in his shoulders ease, and the weight on his little shoulders slip away just a little more.

"And if we happen to come across any more of those heavenly gulab jamuns," he said, raising an eyebrow Along with a gesture of his own right hand, raising it up , "I won't object to indulging a bit more." The sweet, sticky confectionery had been a delightful surprise.
