The moon hung high over the Ilvermorny grounds, its silver light casting long shadows over the vast forest that stretched beyond the castle. Bare branches clawed at the clear sky. The scene was often beautiful in Mount Greylock. The cold mountain air was crisp, tinged with the faint aroma of pine and damp earth. A gentle breeze whispered through the trees, rustling the leaves as though carrying secrets too ancient to comprehend. The castle itself stood as a sentinel on the mountaintop, its spires gleaming like guardians in the night.
Ilvermorny was one of the several great wizarding schools. Serving north america, formerly led by Lazarus Plott, this school had heard hints and rumors of dark and dangerous creatures, read about terrible events but for the most part they were never really tangled in anything particularly dire. Yet Ilvermorny was not wholly safe, they had a few strange incidents. A break in, some items damaged, a few items missing. The mourning of students who died abroad and the absence of their former headmaster were recent incidents that plagued those that paid attention.
Increased security. Prefects patrolled the manicured grounds with greater frequency. The staff kept a watchful eye until late into the night. But they would hardly protect the girls that had escaped into the dark of night. They were out after curfew and they were warned it was dangerous to slip out at night. They simply did not listen to the warnings, but rather the rumors. The rumors of delights hidden in the dark wilds. A forest clearing of farities that danced the night away. Of singing plants that crooned under the stars. It sounded like a truly magical experience, but also like it might be too good to be true. The sort of story an upper classman might tell a younger student as a cruel prank.
Under the cloak of night, beyond the safety of castle walls, the forest pulsed with life—an untamed wilderness teeming with magic. Fireflies flickered like living stars among the undergrowth, and the occasional trill of a nocturnal creature echoed through the stillness. Somewhere deeper within, the wildness shifted, carrying an unspoken tension. The forest was more alive tonight, its energy humming with anticipation. It was as if the woods knew that someone was about to intrude on their sacred night.
Far away, a low growl broke the tranquility, reverberating through the trees like the prelude to a storm. The sounds of crashing branches hinted at something stirring, something dangerous. Yet the fireflies danced on, unbothered, as if daring anyone brave—or foolish—enough to venture into the shadows. The leaves continued to rustle and sway in the trees, the creatures of the night in quiet observation as two young ladies entered the dark.

Expectations are as follows:
- Actually attempt to survive. If you do something like ignore obvious danger to do some sort of meme or wacky thing, I will stop the thread and not do another one with you. I have rules against murdering players and cannot reconcile survival in dangerous scenarios so will be forced to drop the thread. When I drop thread, other members become angry so I will not be able to pick up a new thread with you if this happens.
- Do not godmod or metagame.
- Please remain active, I post usually within 1-2 days and I expect posts within a week, longer often results in a loss of interest in the thread and a loss of 'what was happening.' I understand things happen, but these threads should only be 4-7 rounds in length so please consider your obligations before joining.
- I often play villains or depict dangerous, even graphic scenes. This may assail some members sensibilities. I will not break site rating, however I understand and respect boundaries so if an element goes "too far" please notify me. This does not extend to the whole community, just those in the thread. While I respect readers also, a reader does not have to reads this adventure where a player in this adventure does. So if there are specific limits I should be aware of, please let me know and I cam make edits. Again, I will adhere to the site rating regardless.

Ever since returning from Hogwarts Kaya became more worried. About Amber, about that day. Any possibility of something similar happening again with her bestie was forcing her to be constantly worried. However, she still had the desire for adventures.
Today was starting just like any other day, with getting to the evening where she knew she won't be able to fall asleep for a long time. Stories that she heard some time ago all seemed unreal even in the world full of magic. And she would simply dismiss them as those. Something older students could tell to make younger ones away from it. However, whole week she was finding herself dreaming about all sorts of creatures and trees. So today she decided to go to the forest. Perhaps it wasn't the smartest idea, but the adventurous side of her was desperately forcing Kaya to go and discover everything.
She planned to sneak out past curfew. It would be much harder during the day with all staff and prefects patrolling the area. They said it was dangerous. Kaya was supposed to listen and not question, staying in the potential safety of castle. But how she wouldn't question the feeling of them hiding something from students? They were not in Hogwarts, yet their former headmaster was never found, as far as rumors went. They had new headmaster now, new safety measures. Kaya couldn't ignore it. Forest, so attractive yet by some reason not reachable. Certainly she was going to go.
As night was approaching Kaya quietly prepared her wand, enchanted satchel where she put more warm jacket and clothes she would wear. Pretending to be ready to sleep, she was waiting for a right moment to come. Unexpectedly, she heard some quiet noise and looked in time to see Amber going somewhere. Kaya didn't know where her bestie was going now, but today she wouldn't follow her, or so she thought.
Waiting for some more minutes she stood up, put on sweatshirt and warm leggings, collected her hair in a braid and put on sneakers. Forest was no place for any other type of shoes. Grabbing her wand and satchel Kaya made her way out of the room and then out of castle.
Night was a special time and it felt like it was containing more magic, or was it because there was no people? She didn't bother with it and continued making her way to the forest. What was waiting her there? She was prepared to know.
Near the edge of the forest soon after she entered Kaya noticed fireflies. Their glow was so attractive in the darkness of the night that she didn't even notice that someone was already standing there. It wasn't until she heard a voice that she looked away from the fireflies and looked at the person, now standing in front of her. Amber? I didn't know you were here. I... She paused for a second not wishing to admit that she was planning to come here. I couldn't fall asleep so decided to walk and explore the forest. After all it sounds amusing that we could see something more magical and never came to look. She replied quickly, hiding behind enthusiastic side of her character. She'd never tell Amber the reason why Kaya couldn't fall asleep and now it wasn't important. Now this journey seemed to be destined for walking together.
Kaya felt Amber's soft grabbing her hand and nodded. Getting caught by staff so early definitely isn't something I plan. Not when we are here, so close to exploring. And since we came here together, let's just try to stay close to each other? They came here with their own questions without agreement, but now they could help each other if it will be necessary. She glanced at the fireflies again. Why was it so distracting? Were they a potential danger or potential allies? If Kaya wouldn't be so distracted, perhaps she would feel the slight tension that was slowly waiting for her to notice. Kaya decided to move further into the forest. After all they wouldn't find anything out by standing there looking at fireflies. As they were slowly making their way, Kaya was trying to observe the surrounding area in attempt to notice anything. Her wand resting closer to her right hand, seemingly ready to cast spells.

The forest about Ilvermorny was not the same as the dangerous wood about Hogwarts. Hogwarts had named their forest 'forbidden' as a means of deterring students, but like anything that should not be entered, it seemed to only entice the children further. The forest about Ilvermorny was merely a forest. Magical creatures were drawn to this place, the magic thrumming from the school and the concentration of students drew these creatures like moths to a flame.
It is for that reason there was still 'risk' in this forest, especially at night. The darkened wood held many secrets, but none were considered dangerous beyond the notion that wild beasts were indeed untamed. They could bite, they could scratch. Or that was what the Professors would always tells the children and often this was enough to deter most. There was no secret. No dark legacy that needed to be uncovered. No dark and dastardly plan that needed to be thwarted.
The only problem with this claim, no this lie, was that it gave those with an adventurous heart a peace of mind as they ambled into the nocturne wood. The sounds of the wood, the chitter of creatures, the snap of branches and the rustle of leaves. The calm, cool breeze that nipped at them.
The woods were a nighttime delight, pulling their curiosity further from the safety of their stone walls. But then they would hear it, a strange and terrible noise. A wild animal, a cougar perhaps? A growl, low and menacing. Then the rush of something moving fast through the underbrush. The girls, undeterred by the noise of something approaching. Like the fireflies that continued their dance, the girls ventured onwards.
An unseen force crashes into Kaya's side, sending the girl sprawling into the leaves. She would be knocked off her feet and sent prone, sliding on the uneven earth until the trunk of a tree stops her movement. They would hear the sound of movement, of something large coming their way. But Kaya would never see what hit her, it took her from behind. As for Amber...Unseen attacker strikes at Linda

The forest seemed to be alive, a thought that never came across Kaya's mind. There was no need to think about it. Fireflies distracting her enough from keeping her mind from what it was supposed to do in this place.
The sudden noise finally breaking through the fireflies dancing reached her all too late. Remembering where she was and what they were told Kaya was confused. A growl that she could disregard as some wild animal threatening to be a higher danger now. Fast approaching someone, no, rather something with a rush couldn't mean anything good. The journey to the forest in attempt to know the answers was giving unexpected ones. The questions that should have never been asked.
No matter how much she tried to understand from where it was coming, trying to understand where it would appear, it was soon proved ineffective. One second she was standing with Amber, listening to their fast approaching unwanted company. Next moment she found herself flying after unnoticed impact. Luckily, leaves and tree were there to help her stay not too harmed. Her mind couldn't comprehend what just happened but hearing Amber Kaya knew she had to say something. I'm alright, don't worry. She replied with a calm voice. I just experienced a bit of flying without broom. My advice to you to not try it, there might be no leaves or tree to save you. She laughed warmly. Standing up she made sure she was really fine. Don't blame yourself. I'm really fine and if anything, it was my own decision to come. So let's figure out what's this. She spoke with a warm reassuring voice. The last thing she needed now to have Amber going into panic. They had to be ready. As much as it was possible. And if it would prove to be too much for them with their knowledge, they will try to get out of here. A single thought catching up with her between thinking about spells: they lied.
The forest here was supposed to be without secrets. Not dangerous except for probably a wild animal. A lie they heard before. A lie now proved to be quite dangerous one. What else did they not know? How many lies there were that Kaya trusted up to this moment? She didn't have answer. Now was not a time to think about it.
Taking her wand Kaya focused on what she was about to cast. With a wand movement and concentration she was ready to cast. Caeruleus Inflamarae. It was dark and they had to try to have something to let them see better. Be more prepared. They needed to know from where it was coming.
An afterthought came to her mind, seemingly finally catching up with her. Did Amber say ouch? Are you okay? I think I heard you saying ouch. The forest seemed alive. How did tree appear to be exactly in a way of her brief flight? What happened to Amber when attack seemed to come for Kaya mainly? Or could it be that they were attacked by two different things? Without fireflies distracting her, Kaya finally took a moment to take in the air and focus more on forest. Tension, that growl. A strange and rather terrible sound to the ears. It was more than a wild animal. It was not so simple. Did they know about it and chose to lie about all beauties and wonders in the forest? At this moment her time in Hogwarts' forbidden forest seemed to be more peaceful than their own school's forest. There was a chance that they were simply lucky that day, but it doesn't explain what they were facing now. Whoever spread the rumors about all sorts of magical wonders couldn't mean anything good. Not if they knew about this thing.
Ilvermorny forest, that seemed to not carry any danger within it, should have been called something like "forbidden" as well. They could not lie. The lie that was only attracting students like herself to discover the woods they should've stayed away from. However, she would be lying to herself if Kaya wouldn't admit two things: her adventurous spirit was beyond happiness to finally get a sense of real adventure. And second, the lie could be considered as means of protection. No matter how ironically it was. If parents of students would know about what was in the forest, what was the forest itself, there was a high chance many would be afraid to have their children in Ilvermorny. But because of realizing this lie Kaya now was starting to wonder: did they really not know where the former headmaster was? The girl was doubting how trustworthy they were, but she didn't believe that they were truly oblivious to what was happening in the school they were working in. Ilvermorny staff might lie to students, but they ought to know much more in fact. Much more than they were sharing with students.
Looking at Amber, she had to shut down her thoughts and remind herself that her bestie was with her and could be scared at this very moment that Kaya wasted in silence. Listening to their approaching company and thinking about things she could think about later. What a waste of time. Are you scared? Don't worry, I'm with you. Whatever it is we can get out of it together. I believe in us. She spoke softly. Warmth filled her voice as she reached for Amber's hand. They were in this together and she had no intention of staying here, letting it harm them too much.

The tension in the forest grew unbearable as Amber and Kaya confronted the eerie reality of their situation. Amber saw Kaya get thrown aside by an unseen force. Her first thought was guilt, the mystery of this attack and she struggled to keep her composure. She clung to her instincts, casting Lumos to bring light to the night.

The tip of Amber's wand erupted in a warm, bright light. The shadows were pushed back, revealing Kaya prone on the ground. The light would quaver in cadence with the grip of Kaya's wand. She was going to protect Amber no matter what.
Kaya's form was disheveled, leaves strewn about her hair, her jacket dirtied by the forest floor. She was still conscious, pulling herself back to her feet. Mildly disoriented and scuffed, she diminished the incident perhaps in hopes of allaying her friend's fears. Only, perhaps she should have been honest about her fear. Perhaps she should have told her friend to run. If she knew what was there, she would know it was for the best.
Kaya tried to remain calm, her natural warmth shining through even in this dire situation (calming presence). Despite her own doubts about the forest's supposed harmlessness and the lies surrounding it, she reassured Amber, casting a bright Caeruleus Inflamarae to illuminate their surroundings and keep whatever was hunting them at bay.
Blue orbs would cast their cool glow over the forest floor, outlining the trees and the barren undergrowth. It seemed magical, but the marvel would be lost in the moment. Something was very wrong.Kaya Caeruleus Inflamarae Cast

Their attacker revealed themselves in the combined flickering light: a Hidebehind—a spindly, shadowy creature from nightmares, its form constantly shifting to stay just outside their direct line of sight. They were using the darkness to hide their presence. The creatures are rarely seen by the eyes of men. Masters of camouflage, they were monsters that older prefects would tell the younger students. Many likely thought they were tall tales to keep the children in their beds, but sometimes the danger is real.
The Hidebehind is a creature that they likely heard about in class, hide behinds being unique to North America due to the unexpected coupling of a ghoul and demiguise. The resultant coupling escaped in New England and these dangerous, carnivorous creatures have hunted their human prey ever since. It sounded like a Germanic fairytale to say that their favorite thing to eat is people.
It growled, its voice reverberating like the groaning of ancient trees. Long, gangly limbs would attempt to shift and move behind a warped branch. It would not be able to hide in such direct light.
Where fear might have been, there was also resolve. They stood together. They were outmatched, unprepared—but together, they were determined to face the danger head-on.
The Hidebehind shifted through the shadows like liquid darkness, its movements erratic and unnerving. It let out a low, guttural growl, its body twisting unnaturally as it prepared to strike.
From the corner of Amber’s vision, the creature’s form elongated, its spindly arm extending impossibly long. The Hidebehind lashed out with a whip-like tendril of shadow, striking at Amber’s wand hand.
The lash would hit Amber hard (300 * 2 crit = 600 damage) The impact sent her wand spinning into the underbrush, extinguishing the light of her Lumos and she would be gasping for breath (100 health remaining). She would feel disoriented and dizzy, barely standing. The creature seemed to thrive in darkness, moving more nimbly as the the lights dimmed.Hidebehind performs shadow lash on Amber

Kaya didn't care much about how she looked. Her fall couldn't potentially leave her clothes and hair untouched. It was night, and they were in the forest. In the shadows with a company of the creature they had heard about but never met before. Tension in the air was all she needed to notice earlier, instead of enjoying fireflies. Perhaps, she'd tell her bestie to run. Forest was adding its shadows and darkness, and Kaya needed light. Adding to Amber's Lumos her own spell, she was relieved to see it worked. However, her happiness regarding it didn't last for long. Revealing it, hiding in the shadows.
The Hidebehind was the one meeting them here. Kaya remembered stories and reading something about these creatures. Shadow. She could see it constantly shifting, attempting to stay in the shadows. Its growls were scary enough to her ears, but stubbornly, she didn't want to admit how scared she was. Now was not the right time for it, nor was it the right place. However, strangely enough, the way this creature looked wasn't as scary as its growls. Maybe she didn't realize that it was supposed to make her more afraid? Perhaps the willingness to protect Amber was stronger than anything, and thoughts would catch up on her later. Combined light of two spells seemed to be not enough to keep Kaya and her bestie out of danger.
Her thoughts were soon interrupted as she saw changes in the hidebehind. Something that couldn't mean anything good to both girls was about to come, and Kaya had no time to voice her fear. She didn't see or didn't completely comprehend how this attack happened. But the next second Amber was suffering from Hidebehind and was no longer holding her wand.
Without Lumos, Kaya forced herself to focus on sounds. The Hidebehind's growls were much like thunder, and it felt so loud. Amber's gasping for breath and seemingly trying to stand up was not a good sign at all.
As she took a brief moment to look at Amber, she saw her lying. Stand up, Amber. Don't you dare give up so easily. Words she wouldn't say out loud as she desperately tried to not let go of the Hidebehind, following it with her eyes. Hearing the movement from Amber that sounded like attempting to stand up, Kaya sighed. She didn't want to leave Amber here, but she wasn't naive enough to think she could cast a spell and carry the girl out.
As the shadows were now once again stronger, Kaya thought about light. She needed more light. Her wand still ready in her hand, Kaya breathed out, calming herself just enough to cast the next spell. Lumos Solem. If she could cast it successfully, she hoped Amber would be able to grab her wand and leave this place. If it's cast, try to get it back or just get out of here. We need to leave, even if it means that your wand is staying here a bit longer. She said quickly to Amber. Not the best words if one wanted to keep another one more calm. But Kaya needed Amber out of here now. Wand could wait or at least could be bought. Life couldn't be brought back so easily.
Kaya considered herself wise, and now seemed like the best time to just run. If her spell wasn't successful, they will be attacked in no matter of time. So she decided to run. Out of the forest, back to the place that had more safety. Even if her spell worked, it was all the better to leave the forest. They could return another time when they will be more prepared. Trying to stay closer to Amber Kaya was running not as fast as she wanted. Her bestie and the Hidebehind were still two main things she tried to focus on listening to.

Amber's world spun, her heartbeat thundering in her ears. The searing pain from the Hidebehind's slash radiated through her body, but it was nothing compared to the icy fear creeping up her spine. The creature loomed above her, its shifting form a mass of shadow and malice, blending into the surrounding darkness as though it were part of the night itself. She couldn’t see its face—if it even had one—but she felt its hunger, its primal desire to hunt and devour. She should just lay down and die. A defeatist notion that took over her thoughts. If she died here and now, Kaya might escape. The hidebehind would have no need to hunt with a prime meal.
Die... just die...
The forest seemed to close in around her, the tall trees swaying ominously as if complicit in her terror. That sort of fear that shuts everything down. That breaks the ego, shatters futures. Every rustle of the leaves, every crunch of twigs underfoot echoed like the drumbeats of an impending end. But nobody wants to die, not really. They just do not want to fight anymore. They find oblivion preferable to a losing battle. To the pains of defeat. A sort of want to skip the journey and reach the destination, even if it is not a place someone should end up.
The Hidebehind let out a low, guttural growl, the sound vibrating through the air and into Amber's chest. Amber's hands scrabbled desperately in the dirt, searching, hoping, praying for her wand.
A sudden blur of motion—a dark, elongated limb lashed out again, lashing Kaya's face as tried to duck to the side. The creature was toying with her, enjoying the chase, the fear. Amber knew she had seconds, maybe less, before it struck again and this time it would take down either her or Amber.Hidebehind performs shadow lash on Kaya

Amber mind raced. Where had her wand fallen? She needed it, but the darkness was suffocating, her own light extinguished with her stumble.
Then, a flicker of movement in her periphery—a faint glint. Her wand! It was just beyond her reach, half-buried beneath a cluster of leaves. Amber lunged forward, her injured arm screaming in protest, her fingers clawing at the forest floor. Amber needed her wand before she would even try to escape.
The Hidebehind shrieked, a chilling, bone-deep sound.
Her fingers brushed the wand, just as another swipe from the creature grazed the air above her. She gripped the wand tightly.
The forest erupted with light as Kaya’s Lumos Solem spell surged forth, a brilliant sunbeam cutting through the oppressive darkness. The Hidebehind shrieked, its guttural growl turning into a pained, high-pitched wail as the intense light forced it out of its shifting shadows. The creature’s form, once elusive and formless, was revealed in its entirety—a strange, tall, thin bear-like creature with silver hair, cloaked in writhing, black tendrils that recoiled and twisted against the searing glow.Kaya cast Lumos Solem

Kaya's light was powerful but fleeting—her grip was trembling, and the creature, though stunned, was not retreating. Instead, it paced the perimeter of the illuminated clearing like a predator searching for a weak point, its eyes locked on them with burning intensity.
They needed to move, to run, but Amber was busy retrieving her wand. Neither of them had much left, another hit and either or even both of them would go down.
