Swan was about to break down, right here, in the corridors of Hogwarts. The young girl was in distress. Why ? After all everything seemed to go well, she was settling in with no complications, she loved studying here and learning more about magic, her sister was there to guide her, so what could possibly cause such a state ? She lost her necklace. It wasn’t just a necklace, it was her necklace. It was a tradition in her family, every time someone was born, her grandma would buy them a jewel. For Swan, it was a gold chain, with a water drop charm attached to it. She always wore it, no matter the day. And this morning, while putting it on she must have fastened it wrong, because it wasn’t there anymore.
When she noticed it, about twenty minutes after her last class of the day, she started to panic. She first went to her dorm, maybe she just forgot it ? But no, of course she didn’t. Quickly, the young girl started to go back on her path, going to the classroom she went to today, asking the professors if they found a necklace, if they weren’t here she would go to their office and ask. She walked on the corridors, inspecting every corner closely, in case it dropped. The Badger would also ask the students that she came across if they found a necklace, and every time she had to talk to someone it asked her all her bravery to speak with a stranger, but at the end of her investigation, it was nowhere to be seen.
She arrived at the Courtyard, but it still wasn’t there, and the few students here only had negatives answers when she questioned them about finding a necklace, which only reinforced her panic.
She sat on a nearby bench, trying to hold back tears. It was her most important belonging, her lucky charm, she needed to find it. She could already picture the disappointment and sadness on her grandmother's face if she had to tell her that she lost the precious jewel. It wasn’t an option, she needed to have it back before dinner time.

Jade walked down the corridors of Hogwarts, attempting to flip through the pages of a book without running into anyone. She had brought the book to Hogwarts in hopes of having something comforting to do when she was feeling down, but she hadn’t found time to read until now. The first few weeks of school had been rather busy for her. But school had been rough, and navigating everything was just so tiring, Jade had decided to read anyway. Even though she still had homework to take care of. I hope I’ll be able to find a spot to read…

After almost running into an older student, and hurriedly apologizing, Jade tucked the book away and quickly continued to the courtyard, not wanting to run into someone again. She let out a sigh of relief when she made it outside into the sunshine. Thankfully, there weren’t many other people sitting on benches. Jade was about to take a seat on a nearby bench when she noticed something sparkling on the ground. What is that? Frowning, Jade bent down and picked up the mysterious object. It’s a necklace, she realized. Did someone lose it here? That was worrisome, but… Jade didn’t know what to do about lost objects, and there was no way she would go around asking people until she found the owner.

I can ask a Professor if Hogwarts has a lost-and-found during one of my classes tomorrow, Jade decided, tucking the necklace into a pocket in her uniform and taking a seat. She was about to open her book and get started reading, when she noticed a girl sitting on a nearby bench, who looked upset. Should I go over and talk to her? Jade looked down at her book. Though, I really want to read… But no. I should be nice. I’ll never make any friends if I don’t talk to people.

Course of action decided, Jade got up and walked over to the other girl. She seemed to be about the same age as Jade. “Hey, um, are you okay?” Jade asked. “Is everything alright?”

Swan was lost in her thoughts, going through her day step by step in her mind to see if she had missed a spot, if she removed it at any time of the day. She just sat there, trying to find a solution. If she really lost her precious necklace during her first month here, then it was probably a bad sign, she didn’t have her lucky charm anymore, everything could go wrong. This thought made the young girl panic, but she quickly recovered, trying to stay rational.

Maybe her big sister found it, recognized it, and was waiting to see her to give the jewel back to her ? That would be quite a coincidence, but at this point she was ready to envisage anything to reassure herself. Perhaps there was a lost-and-found somewhere? After all, she for sure was not the first student to lose something. This possibility gave her a little hope, and she kept in mind to find an adult or a prefect to ask about it.

Her mind was swirling with thoughts, she was now trying to figure out when she lost it. During her first class of the day, she had it, she remembered playing with it, same for the next one and the lunch. Suddenly, a voice, asking her if she was alright, put an end to her mental turmoil. She looked up, seeing a brown-haired girl that seemed friendly. What was she supposed to say? “Hey, no I’m about to cry because I lost my necklace.” No, that sounded silly. Swan has never been good at social interaction, and it was so unusual that people came to talk to her that she hesitated a bit before answering, “Hey, yes I’m okay and you?” but her voice was betraying her true emotions.

Should she ask the name of the girl? Or why was she talking to her? No, that seemed rude and awkward, but she knew she needed to be better at socializing, so she added, “I’m Swan, by the way.”

Jade frowned at the other girl’s response - she didn’t look okay. She looked rather upset, but… Jade didn’t think it would be polite to point that out. This was a bit silly of me, she thought, while struggling to come up with something else to say. She didn’t know this girl - why had Jade expected her to tell her what was wrong? And what am I supposed to say now? Overall, Jade was feeling a bit embarrassed. The conversation was sure to take an awkward turn now. “I’m, uh, glad to hear you’re doing okay,” she said hesitantly, “I just asked because you, um, seemed a bit -” Jade gestured vaguely, as if that would magically convey what she was trying to describe. “Uh, anyway… Glad to hear you’re feeling alright…” She trailed off, her feeling of awkwardness coming back in full force.

Oh, this is going terribly, Jade thought to herself. I should have just stayed on my bench and read my book. That would have been a thousand times less embarrassing. She could feel her face getting a bit flushed with embarrassment. “I’m Jade,” she said, taking the safe route of continuing introductions. That seemed a little less awkward than what she had been saying previously. “It’s nice to meet you.” Jade tucked her hands into her pockets, as if that would somehow help with her awkward feeling. It didn’t. “So, uh… what brings you to the Courtyard? Are you just enjoying the afternoon, or are you… doing something else?”

Jade sighed to herself, a part of her feeling like what she had just said had made the conversation even more awkward. She closed her hands into fists in her pockets, accidentally grabbing the necklace she had found in the process. I still have to figure out what to do with this, Jade thought to herself. I suppose I could use it as an excuse, to get out of the conversation? But, no… that would make things feel even more embarrassing if Jade left suddenly. She would stick around for a little while. Swan seemed pretty nice. Jade just felt anxious, for probably no reason at all. It’s totally fine, she tried to convince herself. She probably doesn’t even think I’m acting weird. Probably.
