Elizabeth hunched up as she sat down at the table. She didn't want anyone to stare because her hair had changed colors. If there had been a hole, she would gladly have jumped into it.

"At least dad wasn't mad about it." She muttered under her breath in Irish, stirring the food around on her plate. Dropping her hands to her lap, she stared down at them, wishing that she hadn't lost her appetite upon sitting down. On the bright side, she knew her brother was studying and didn't want any dinner.

Knowing that she couldn't keep it in any longer, she pushed her plate away, laid her arms on the table, and put her face into her arms. A silent stream of tears coursed down her face as she wished that she could reverse time. Alas, what she had done over Christmas break was done and she had to face it until it was gone in a few weeks time.

Knowing that she couldn't eat at that moment only made her feel worse. It seemed like nothing could cheer her up. Even the thought of her cat made her feel worse. Nothing, nothing at all seemed to be able to cheer her up one bit.

Avis slipped into the hall slightly late. It wasn't her fault, of course, but rather that stupid painting that had gotten her distracted on her way over from the library. She scanned the mostly crowded Ravenclaw table, to no avail. The only free seats were either by some upperclassmen or next to a sleeping purple mop. Avis was pretty, generally, the opposite of self-conscious, but she was not about to sit in the middle of an upperclassmen clique. Realistically, they probably would have just ignored her, but Avis headed toward the purple mop nonetheless.

Slipping into the seat next to the girl, Avis filled her plate and began eating in silence, occasionally casting glances toward the girl next to her. She knew she had seen the girl before, (Presumably, since it's January) but she could not for the life of her remember what her hair had looked like before Christmas break.

As she ate, it slowly became evident that the girl was not sleeping, rather crying, annoyingly enough. Avis. Didn't. Care. At least, that was what she told herself. Then again, she told herself that quite often, and rarely was it true. She let out a soft sigh, rolling her eyes as she pushed her plate of food away. Fine. She would be a decent person, as well as she could be.

Avis laid her arms on the table and rested her head sideways, hoping to get a look under the purple mop at the girl underneath. It messed up her hair a little bit, as it splayed a bit across the table, but sacrifices had to be made. Plus, ignoring people was always harder when you couldn't see their eyes, and it was awfully hard to ignore a direct question if the asker was staring directly at you. "Quite the hair. Why'd you choose purple?" She kept her tone even and neutral, at least for now.
