After nearly two years of being at Hogwarts, Lottie had grown quite accustomed to the Owlery. Not that she enjoyed it any more knowing it like the back of her hand, but familiarity was always pleasant to the young Winfield girl. And the owls of the Owlery were very, very familiar.

The moment she entered into the large, brightly lit tower, the sound of high-pitched screeching and excited flapping rang through her ears. The chill of winter's slow approach drifted through the paneless windows and sent chills up her spine. The culmination of discomfort from all ends was off-putting no matter how many times she made the trip to the old tower, but at least she had grown to expect it. She placed an annoyed hand over her ear and continued into the room.

Clutched in her other hand was a cream-colored envelope addressed to her sister. She had meant to send it a week prior, but her classwork had gotten so overwhelming that thoughts of her sister completely- and, quite frankly, miraculously- managed to escape her mind. But, of course, as soon as her last assignment was turned in, the reminder of her sister's absence returned like a thorn in her side.

Before stepping into school, Ira had naively assumed she'd enjoy unfettered freedom, but that assumption was far from the truth. Owling her parents has turned into a bigger ordeal than actually doing her homework. They always bombard her with inquiries about her grades and constantly complain about why she didn’t achieve Os in certain subjects— If her first year was this overwhelming, she shuddered at the thought of fifth year.

And as if that weren't enough, they criticize her eating habits, sleeping patterns, and everything in between. That’s why Ira has long preferred to lie to them about everything, rather than speak the truth, whenever she gets the chance.

To avoid dealing with their incessant pestering, Ira delayed sending them an owl for two weeks, citing the excuse of studying. It would only take five minutes to craft her usual web of lies, but it never felt worth the effort. Still, she couldn’t procrastinate any longer. Soon, she'd be home, and they’d want to know why she hadn’t owled them, a question she really didn't want to face. And so, with a letter in hand, Ira walked toward the owlery.

Upon entering, Ira spotted a girl with short brown hair already in the owlery. Though they had never met before, Ira smiled politely and said, "Hello," before she opened her letter to double-check that her parents wouldn’t criticize her way of life. As she’d always thought, managing her parents’ expectations was more difficult than managing her homework. "I can't believe how frequently people send owls home," Ira murmured as she read. Wasn’t it such a bother?

Lottie played out her little dance of indecision, making slow steps to her owl as she wondered if it was really worth it. There was always the fear stuffed away into the back of her mind that one day her owl would somehow find its way off-course and her mother would be able to intercept it. The repercussions would be monumental, and the ropes around Lottie's wrists would tighten exponentially.

Eventually, though, as she always did, she got over it. Just as she was about to tie her letter, though, footsteps alerted her of another's presence. She turned slightly, suppressing a small note of annoyance in her expression at being interrupted during her little ritual. It took her a few seconds to assess the younger girl before her, and even longer to realize that she had spoken.

"Hello," Lottie replied quickly, swallowing thickly and averting her gaze. She re-adjusted, putting on a more neutral expression and continuing to tie her letter onto the owl's leg. She was constantly having to remind herself that yes, obviously there were other people in this school and yes, obviously she would eventually have to run into some of them. She glanced back briefly, tucking some loose strands of hair out of her face.

Lottie considered this point briefly. Her mother expected only monthly letters containing grade updates and occasionally small requests or notes. Her little siblings did not have owls of their own, making it difficult for them to consistently send letters back and forth. The only times Lottie owled her brother was just to ask questions about Quidditch. Anadil was really the only one that she kept consistent contact with.

"I suppose its subjective." Lottie gave a one-shouldered shrug.
