✽Avery breathed in the wintry air as she watched snowflakes fall slowly from the sky. She loved snow. It was so magical, and caused the whole world to look like it was wrapped in a blanket. Though the blanket was cold. She hadn't heard from her parents yet. Avery thought about heading to the owlery, and sending them a letter, but, then again, she decided not to. There was no point, really. Who knows if they would even respond.
Avery watched as people walked through the snow. They all seemed happy. Especially since Christmas Break was coming soon. Avery wasn't happy that she was being forced to stay at Hogwarts, but hey, maybe she could actually do something productive. Like reading a new book, or working on learning Quidditch maneuvers, so she could join in the spring.
"Maybe someone will be here to hang out with this Christmas." Avery muttered to herself. Oblivious to the fact that the snow was beginning to make her look like the rest of the courtyard.
Avery sighed again and stood up. Deciding to do something instead of just sitting outside. Since she wasn't paying attention, she accidentally ran into someone.
"I'm so sorry. Are you all right?" She asked a girl with blonde hair. ✽

Speech -- Thoughts
Pam was running into people all the time here.
A fellow firstie? Let's bump into them. A senior? Let's bump into them. A random stranger you've never met before? Let's bump into them.
The only people left were the teachers. Pam was counting her days until she walked into one of them too. She hoped it was one of the teachers who liked her. Although knowing her luck? Nope.
Pam glanced at the girl she had walked into, hazel eyes looking into hers, Ooh she's pretty. Focus Pam focus. She smiled sheepishly, "Um sorry."
But let's rewind.
About thirty minutes ago, Pam had come out for a walk. She had been excited on seeing that it had started snowing gently and just so happened to be free at that time. It was no secret that she adored the snow. Walking through the snow had become a frequent activity for her. Winter was always so amazing. And she loved Christmas. The colors, the decorations, the sounds and the general festive vibe; she loved it all.
She couldn't wait to see her dad. Pam felt awfully homesick sometimes, having not fully gotten used to living so far away from him. It would take her some time to adjust to it.
She was brought rudely out of her thoughts as she ran into someone. A girl who was probably also a first year like her. She shook her head slightly as the girl started to apologise, "Don't worry I'm fine. Are you alright?"

✽"Yeah, I'm okay. Sorry for running into you. I guess you could say I haven't been fully paying attention to everything lately." Avery half smiled. She was embarrassed at herself for not paying attention.
Avery was actually glad that she had run into the girl. Running in to her caused Avery to come out of thinking and finally decide where she was going to go. She wasn't even thinking when she got up, so she walked back over to the fountain and sat.
She motioned the girl over to her and asked, "What's your name?" The girl seemed nice, so Avery was curious to get to know her.
She didn't remember ever seeing the girl. She looked like a first year, but she wasn't sure. She was a Hufflepuff, but she wasn't in Avery's Herbology class. At least, she didn't think she was in it. Avery usually payed attention to the teacher until the class ended and she could chat with her friends. Avery was shocked that she hadn't seen the girl before. Maybe she had, but she didn't remember?
"Are you a first year too? I feel like I might have seen you, but I can't remember. There are so many people here." Avery lightly laughed. Unsure of where to start. ✽

Pam raised her eyebrows as the girl went over to sit by the fountain before going over to join her, "I'm Pam. What's your name?"
She glanced over the girl. She looked like she would also be in first year. Or maybe second? She was decently taller than Pam. And Pam couldn't remember ever seeing the girl. Had she seen her in any of the classes? She wasn't sure. Which class did they share with the Gryffindors? Herbology? She didn't really look at people during the classes, much preferring to finish and move on to something else. And she was always with her friends so she wasn't very aware of her surroundings. Besides Herbology was difficult for her and she was always too busy trying to understand what the teacher was teaching them.
Pam's guess was proved right as the girl asked her if she was also a first year and she nodded, "Yes, I'm a first year. Are you too? I don't remember ever seeing you though." She subconsciously dipped her hand into the fountain water, drawing it back with a start as the biting cold hit her. Okay that's freezing. She wiped her hand quickly hoping the girl didn't notice it.
"Did you come out for a walk too?" She asked her.

✽"Hi Pam. I'm Avery." Avery responded to her. Pam came over to sit by her at the fountain. Avery smiled at her. Even though she didn't know the girl, she still seemed pretty nice, so Avery hoped she would be able to get to know her.
Avery was glad that the girl was also a first year. She wanted to get to know more people in her year. Especially since they would spend the next seven years together. Why not get to know them now. "That's awesome. I'm a first year too!" Avery responded.
"I don't remember seeing you either. Actually, I think the only class I have with Hufflepuffs is Herbology, and I'm usually too focused on it until after class. Then I hang out with my friend after it finishes. He's a Hufflepuff too."
Avery watched as the girl attempted to place her hand in the water before quickly taking it out and wiping it off. Avery smiled. She loved how warm the water was earlier in the year, but since it was December, she wasn't surprised that it was freezing. Avery was just surprised that it hadn't frozen over yet. There must have been some kind of spell to keep it from freezing.
When Pam asked if Avery had come outside to go for a walk, Avery said. "Kinda. I just found out that I'm stuck here for Christmas instead of going to my hometown in Wales to see my family. I pretty much began wandering around and ended up here. What about you?" ✽

Pam smiled at the girl, "Nice to meet you Avery!" She seemed pretty nice, and Pam liked the vibe she gave off. Perhaps they could be friends with each other. She nodded her head at the Herbology statement, relating to it easily, "Right, I normally like to focus during class too." Especially since I barely understand the stuff, she thought, but didn't put it into words.
"Oh, are you friends with a Hufflepuff? What's his name? Maybe I know him." She tilted her head considering, "Although chances of that are rather less—" Pam found it hard to remember people, especially those she met once. Hopefully this time it wouldn't come down to that. After all, Hufflepuff had a number of students, and she hadn't met so many of them yet.
She cleared her throat and said, "Are you not going home for the holidays? That's pretty sad. I'd be very upset if I wasn't going home for Christmas." Pam hesitated, unsure of what to say after that. Comforting was not a part of her meagre skillset. "Well," She said softly, "I'm sure you won't be alone. Others will be staying back for the holidays too I'm sure."
"I'm here for a walk too." She continued, "I saw it was snowing and I was free so I came out here!"

✽"His name is Joseph. He's also a first year." Avery responded to Pam's question about who her friend in Herbology was. She wondered if she knew him since she said the chances were rather less. The girl seemed super nice and friendly, so Avery wasn't sure why the girl didn't know the whole school already.
Pam seemed nervous when Avery had brought up Herbology. It was an easy class for Avery, but that was because she loved being outside and loved science. "Hey, if you ever need any help with Herbology, just shoot me an owl. I'm decently good at it thanks to my dad. He made sure I knew all of the plants in the woods on my grandparents farm by the time I was five."
Avery laughed at the memory of her dad attempting to teach her. He thought it was going to be easy, but turns out it isn't that easy to teach a five year old the difference between two plants. Avery was grateful for his lessons though. They had really helped her get through Herbology so far.
"Yeah. Unfortunately I can't go home because my parents are busy, and I haven't even seen or heard from my grandparents and other family for about three years. That's why I'm stuck here. I do hope that there will be something to do. I'm sure someone will get up to mischief and cause some fun." Avery said.
"You came out because of the snow too? I love the snow! How about you?" Avery asked. ✽

Pam's eyes widened as she did, in fact, recognise the name she was given. "Oh! I know him! We met in the Astronomy Tower one day! It was...." She trailed off as memories from that night came to her, "...awkward." She couldn't help but grin and told her, "I think we were both surprised to see each other. I also think neither of us really wanted company that night. He was still nice though."
She smiled sheepishly, "It's not that I'm exactly bad at Herbology.....it just.... doesn't really interest me a lot. So I don't like the classes a lot. Never been a big fan of plants."
Pam laughed at the girl's enthusiasm, "I do in fact like the snow a lot. And winter in general. It's better than the heat. Also you can always dress well in winter. And there are hot chocolates and warm blankets. And Christmas. I do love christmas, it's always so pretty. Oh, and leather jackets."
Pam stopped abruptly, realising she had been talking too much and flushed in embarrassment. She didn't normally talk so much in a go, unless it was a topic that interested her and she was with a person she was comfortable with. The first one was definitely true, as for the second, well, the older girl seemed to have a way of putting Pam at ease. She cleared her throat and smiled sheepishly, "Er, sorry."

✽Avery smiled as Pam talked about winter. She agreed with her. Winter was a time that still held her fondest memories of her childhood. She could almost feel the cold mountain air of Wales and the light breeze in the forest as she played for hours with her cousin.
After long days of playing they would come home to a house full of joyful people and the smells of a delicious dinner cooking in the oven. Avery sighed quietly. She missed those days. All she hoped was that she would be able to be there again soon. Maybe next year would finally be her chance.
"It's no problem at all. I tend to also talk way too much. Especially about winter. I used to visit my grandparents with my family during the winter and it was always my favorite part of the year." Avery smiled. Still remembering those days.
"What is your favorite part of winter?" Avery asked since the girl also loved this season.
Avery hoped that she would be able to become friends with the girl. She seemed super nice and friendly. Avery also loved that they both had stuff in common. Especially about their love of winter. ✽

Pam chuckled and shook her head, "I don't actually talk so much normally. But, I've always been more lively in winter, and less.....irritable? Because in summer I'm like, ' don't talk to me, I'll kill you '. The heat is....annoying let's say." She shrugged, thinking about her past summers. She was always alright around her dad. He had a way of getting out the best in her. When she went to school though? Well, she had been told she could be scary.
That was not to say she was irritable in general. She was always nice to her friends and to people who were nice back to her. She also tended to avoid new people and had zero tolerance for nonsense. Which was a far-cry from her behaviour in winter. Sure she still refused to take bullshit, but she'd turn them down nicely. In summer she was an angry, untrusting cat.
She wasn't sure why she had volunteered such personal information to a girl she met a few minutes ago. Maybe it was a weather. She considered Avery's question, "I don't think I have a specific favourite part of the season.. Christmas? The snow? Hot chocolate?" She grinned at her, "Let's say a mix of everything."
She was happy about the fact that she had met a fellow winter enthusiast. One of her friends absolutely hated the season and that made her sd. "What's your favorite thing about the season?" She asked her.
