The Great Hall was alive with its usual First School Day activities: the crackling light of floating candles, the ceaseless hum of chatter, and the curious glances of first years taking in Hogwarts for the first time. Ula Takahashi sat at the Gryffindor table, idly swirling her goblet of pumpkin juice. Her thoughts flickering back to the train ride that had just ended an hour prior, the monotonous click-clack of the wheels still echoing faintly in her mind.

She cast a glance toward the Slytherin table, her gaze landing on Ulysses Drake, the boy she had shared a compartment with. Ula's lips twitched into the ghost of a smirk as she watched a first-year near the edge of the Slytherin table. They had their finger lodged firmly in their nose, and before Ula could look away, they flicked the offending booger straight onto Ulysses' immaculate robes.

He didn't notice.

"Of course not," she muttered under her breath, shaking her head slightly as she leaned forward to grab a piece of bread from a platter.

It was as she reached that a name cut through the noise of the hall, one that made her hand falter mid-grab.

"Gekko Phillips."

Ula froze. Her heart thumped hard in her chest, and she sat up straighter, her goblet forgotten. The name echoed in her ears, sending her mind spinning back to childhood summers in Japan. It couldn't be... could it? My freaking cousin? the ravenette thought to herself. She hadn't seen Gekko since they were six, hadn't thought of her in just as long.

Her eyes snapped to the Sorting Hat, where a girl with sharp features and jet-black hair styled into a neat bob now sat, her posture confident as the hat deliberated.

It didn't take long.

"Slytherin!"

The Slytherin table erupted into applause, and Ula's gaze followed Gekko as she slipped off the stool and made her way toward the table, her stride clearly showing her excitement to be sorted into said house. Ula stared, her heart beating a little faster. Was that really her cousin? The name, the face—it all fit, but the years had clearly changed her.

She forced herself to sit back and wait, her foot tapping impatiently under the table as the Sorting continued. Names were called, cheers rang out, but Ula barely registered any of it. Her attention flicked back to the Slytherin table every few moments, her gaze locking onto Gekko as she settled among the other first years.

When the last first year was sorted and the applause died down, Ula didn't hesitate. She stood and slipped out from the Gryffindor table, weaving through the lingering chaos of students talking and shifting around. Her steps were purposeful as she approached the green-and-silver-draped table, her heart pounding with a mix of curiosity and disbelief.

"Phillips!" Ula called out, her voice sharp enough to cut through the chatter still lingering in the Great Hall.

She hadn't planned on the words slipping out, but there they were, hanging in the air. Heads turned—most of them Slytherins—as she strode closer, weaving past students.

Her steps slowed as she neared the girl in question. Gekko Phillips. Her cousin. The name alone had rattled something loose in her memory, but seeing her up close? That was a whole different feeling.

The years had sharpened her features, sure, but there was no mistaking it. Those same sharp, dark eyes and the slight pout to her lips—Gekko looked so much like Ula remembered her. Except older. And now, apparently, a Slytherin.

"You've got to be kidding me," Ula said, more to herself than anyone else, though her voice still carried. She stopped a few feet away, arms crossed as she sized Gekko up, her expression a mix of disbelief and amusement.

───── Gekko honestly didn't care what house they appointed her to, as long as her father was happy about whichever one she got. If she could be appointed to his Slytherin house, that'd be great, but it wouldn't be a big deal to her. She knew she could make him proud from any house they gave her. Except Hufflepuff, father was very explicit about not being in there. Something about them being weak crybabies? Who knows. Thankfully, however, she didn't need to double her work to satisfy her family when she did indeed get placed into Slytherin. She wouldn't admit it, but she was very excited to write back to home about this to her father and tell him all about it.

A quirk on her lips indicated a smile as the other Slytherin excitedly welcomed her to the table, the feeling of comradery with people her own age inciting feelings of belonging. She sat herself down in the middle of the table to watch the other children go up and get sorted, fascinated by the various expressions of excitement and nervousness. After the girl had to go through it all herself, she couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for them, but it was entertaining in its way at watching the other kids squirm under the sorting hat. When it all finally calmed down and things seemed to begin to mellow out, Gekko was eager to try the food that was all over the table. However, she had a pause as she heard someone call out in her direction.

"Mm?"

Gekko looked up from her seat and blinked at the sight of an older girl approaching her. Her head tilted to the side in confusion and wonder, eying the Gryffindor with a barely quirked up eyebrow. "Kidding? I haven't told you a joke yet." The voice was monotone per usual, but her lips twitched in a barely there smile at her own words. The older girl looked familiar, and something itched in Gekko's mind that she knew her personally. Well, regardless if she did somehow know this pretty girl, her mother still taught her manners. The girl stood up from her seat and dusted off her skirt before offering her hand in greetings.

"Hi. I'd tell you my name, but you seem to know it already, so it's nice to meet you...?"
