It was a pleasant Saturday morning, marking roughly a month and a half since the semester began. Oliver was starting to feel that familiar itch he always got after too many weeks of nothing but studying, resting, and a few run-ins with other students. It wasnโt the itch from his condition or the lingering, sickly side effects that came with itโit was for the one sport he loved above anything else, the one thing that could truly take his mind off everything.
Quidditch.
Gripping the school broom tightly with his dirt-ridden fingers, as though he had been gardening for hours without gloves, Oliver's thoughts were far from his hands. The Quidditch Training Pitch was beautiful even beyond it's purpose. The aged, mossy stone walls, crumbling at the edges, adjacent the pitch, dark-brown wooden benches layed across the field an area to sit countless mock-games and practices, offering flyers a place to rest or converse. Oliver's gaze lingered up, on a couple of seniors who soared effortlessly through the air above him, their luxurious brooms cutting through the sky with a speed and stability that was almost otherworldly. It was hard for Oliver to fathom just how modern brooms could perform with such grace, the thought leaving him in quiet awe.
He looked back down at his own broom. The pale, scratched shaft bore the marks of years of wear, with indentations from where generations of student's fingers had gripped it so many times before. The broom looked more like a relicโa clumsy, makeshift creation of wood and twigs haphazardly bound together, its design so far removed from the sleek, high-performance brooms soaring above him as he stood. It reminded Oliver more of a cleaning broom from the 1800s, the kind Muggles would have used. He sighed, glancing enviously at the seniors' brooms that cut through the air with effortless precision.
Oliver nodded to himself, determination simmering in his head. He promised he would save every last bit of his pocket money until he could afford one of those broomsโsomething fast, something that could keep up with the rest. When he had mentioned his plan to his father, Coriolan would only chuckle, his voice warm but teasing. "You'll be a senior yourself by the time you can buy a Firebolt!" Oliver could almost hear his father's laugh now. Maybe it would take years before he could afford the broom he dreamed of. But one day, he'd have one just like the seniorsโsomething to call his own.
He sighed, shifting his old broomstick between his legs before reaching into his pockets, pulling out a faded yellow ping-pong ball. He rolled it between his fingers, feeling its smooth surface as he stared at it, his mind plastered with the image of a Snitchโits delicate, intricate carvings and those gold, fluttering wings that would unfold with a vibrant buzz. With a determined, loud grunt, Oliver tossed the small ball high into the air, his arm curving in a blur with lycanthropic strength, watching the ball shrink out of sight as it climbed higher and higher. Without hesitation, he crouched low on his broom, pressing the soles of his shoes against the worn, dirt path from many harsh landings and take-offs like the land had felt across it's years. In one powerful leap, he shot into the air, his broom rocketing with him as a rush of wind pressed onto his face and pushed his hair back. That feelingโthe feeling of flying like an eagleโwas something Oliver could never forget.

โ Oh, I missed that.
The crisp morning air gently brushed her blonde locks, as a smile stretched across her delicate features. Her hand, steady and sure, clutched the handle of her Comet 180 - a gift from Cass, whom she had met during summer camp. The ravenclaw made a few steps in the training field, still shiny from the morning dew. Quidditch had always been a passion close to her heart - an interest she shared with her father. It was one of the rare times he truly opened up, teaching her the art of flying and revealing some of his tricks. The skies had become the young girl's sanctuary, bringing her a deep sense of freedom she rarely experienced elsewhere. Now, she stood determined to earn her place in the Ravenclaw quidditch team as a seeker. Her keen eyes and sharp instincts, honed from years of observation and practice, made her a natural. She trained as often as she could, dreaming of wearing the uniform.
Shifting her broomstick between her legs, her hands gripped the handle with steady determination. She paused for a moment, taking a deep breath as a grin began to widen across her face. Then, with a powerful push, she shot in the air. The cold wind brushed past her cheeks, an indescribable feeling rushing through her veins. For several minutes, she practiced her flying techniques, weaving through invisible obstacles and testing her speed, her focus unwavering. Eventually, she slowed down and let herself hover over the ground, casting her sharp eyes over the training field below. It was then that she noticed a boy with dark hair nearby, tossing a few balls into the air. Curious, she tilted her broom slightly to get a closer look.
He seemed to be playing a game of throw and fetch with himself, likely practicing to become a seeker. He looked about her age, so the blonde haired girl guessed he wasn't on a team yet. Hovering above him, she tilted her head, watching him with curiosity. He hadn't noticed her yet, and Elena was in a playful mode. Waiting until a ball was up in the air, she gave a quick, calculated push and rushed right above him, her fingers wrapping around the ball. Stealing it from him, she lowered herself until she reached her level, a light smirk lingering on her face. Tossing the ball lightly in the air before catching it again, she tilted her head with feign innocence. "Looking for this ?" She asked, eyes sparkling with amusement.
Elena wasn't usually this playful. She was the type to keep her distance, preferring the company of books and silence. When she did speak up, it was typically with a calm, measured tone that mirrored her peaceful demeanor. But quidditch awakened an unknown flame inside of her - a spark that made her laugh, smile and let go. A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she tossed the ball back to the dark haired boy, her broom swaying effortlessly as she circled him. "Training ?" She asked, her voice carrying a touch of warm and curious kindness. "I'm Elena, by the way."

Oliver soared through the air, his dark hair swept back by the wind, a wide grin spreading further across his face with each meter he climbed. The yellow-tinged ping-pong ball stood out sharply against the blue sky, almost convincing him it was a real snitch. The thought of this very moment, being an actual Quidditch match, filled Oliver with adrenaline. Before he even realized it, Oliver's imagination had transformed the vast, vacant Training Pitch into a grand, roaring Quidditch stadium, every little detail surreal to his mind.
The tinged ball swerved to the side, overcome by a light breeze and changing it's trajectory, Oliver steered haphazardly in the same direction, a very novice reaction, his mind had already calculated the ball's swerve as some disorderly flight of a proper snitch. Oliver closed onto the 'snitch', his breath racing in anticipation, the wind died down as the ball slowly begun to fall, Oliver leaned down, his path intersecting with the ball's own motion as his arm became outstretched, grasping for the so-called 'snitch'.
Suddenly, in a whir another broom zoomed pass him, the ball disappearing with it. Oliver, looking upwards to a degree that could have hurt his neck, saw a young girl with an amused glint look down at him, with the yellow ping-pong ball in her palm.
"Looking for this?" she said, Oliver only retorting with amazement, she was riding a Comet-180, a decent good broom for a young girl, a broom Oliver had glued his eyes to several times in several magazines and Quality Quidditch Supplies, it was a broom he could afford right now, yet it immediately reminding Oliver of the old, shabby broom he was currently perched upon. The girl continued, gently tossing the ball from her hand into Oliver's, "Training? I'm Elena, by the way."
"Oh- I'm Oliver, Oliver Thorn." Oliver sighed, startled, he reached his hand out, forgetting the ball was in it and quickly retracted it awkwardly. "Training... Yes, I'm training, I'm going to become Hufflepuff's Seeker."
Oliver spoke in a mostly humble tone, originating from both how experienced the girl was to snatch his 'snitch' from him the last second, how high above she still was to him, and overall the total advance manner of the scenario. "Well- I'll try to."

| xxxxxxxx | The boy - Oliver, as she would learn later - had thick brown locks tousled by the wind, a rich and deep color that made her own golden strands seem even lighter in the morning sun. Still hoovering above him, the raven examined the boy's almost disappointed expression - a feeling she could understand, given how she'd stole the ball from his very hands. Still hoping he wasn't the type to hold a grudge, Elena initiated the conversation while throwing his ball back at him. He caught it with ease, confirming her initial hypothesis - a future seeker in training. A future rival, that is. Running her navy eyes over his figure, she firmly planted her hands on the broom. She wasn't used to staying in a stationary position that high in the sky (preferring loopings and other adrenaline seeking activities), and even stumbling right now would stain the good impression she was trying to make. Her smile faltered at the mention of his name. Unwanted and unpleasant memories flashed in front of her eyes, as the young girl lost a few centimeters of altitude. He couldn't possibly... An imperceptible frown growing between her eyebrows, she tried to rationalize. After all, what would be the odds that a child related to her grandparent's family end up in front of her ? To her knowledge, her cousins were somewhere in France, learning the savoir necessary to be "the family's future". Snickering, she left the hollow places of her mind to focus back to the present moment. A badger. A Thorne could not possibly be a badger. It must have been another family. Feeling now foolish for letting her fears wash over her rationality, Elena let her smile become genuine, and nodded at his tentative to shake her hand. "Well that makes both of us," she replied, regaining the altitude she had lost. She slightly drifted, the wind shifting to follow her ascension, positioning her to Oliver's left. "Would a badger and a raven," she started, tilting her head, "put their differences aside to focus on a shared goal ?" House rivalry was something she had not quite grasped during her short time at Hogwarts, yet she had witnessed many interactions that led her to be careful while approaching other houses. Or not, she thought after a short reflexion - strongly believing in humans inherently good nature, Elena was often keen to approach others that seeked comfort or friendship, without being too wary. However, quidditch was an entirely different subject. Quite proud of her house's team, she believed any student would feel the same playful animosity towards other players - which reminded her of the competition between what muggles called football. A fight had never sparked between her person and another but she had heard of several broken noses and detention being distributed around games periods. But that badger didn't seem aggressive. Perhaps that was a common feature to Hufflepuffs, as Elena couldn't think of a single aggressive badger. Concealing a smile, she darted forward. As she brushed past Oliver, her fingers closed on a single ball, one she showed him before throwing it high in the sky. With a playful wink, she exclaimed, "Think fast ! Last one to reach it !" |
