If someone would ask what pet would fit Eric, they would think of...anything...other than a ferret. Sure the mustelids were sleeping more than half of the day, but when they weren't, the chaotic (and lovable) energy they were giving off was anything but possibly associated with Eric's temperament. At this point even Eric himself was debating whether or not he made a good choice by getting one of these animals. But something...whether it be those mischievous eyes or that cute face that promised trouble, or maybe their boundless energy whenever they were not sleeping, maybe it was even reminding him of a certain someone he met here at Hogwarts, was most likely what got him to be so intrigued by the little fellas.

He did his research on them as well. It seemed like a possible pet to own, and the school was no against it so at this point, all he had to do was go and buy it. One...tiny...problem. Once he was at the magical menagerie shop, he was a bit...conflicted. There were quite a few there, and he knew that he was only supposed to choose one pet. Well, that was not really easy when there were at the very least 5 or 6 ferrets all seemingly getting his attention and all very much cute looking. Right.... this was...slightly more difficult than he anticipated.

So as to make it easier he decided to buy the essentials for the ferret first. That was a much easier choice to make yes, indeed. It did not change that after that was said and done he had yet to decide on the actual ferret but all at their respective time. Once the essentials were crossed off the list he returned his attention on the animals playing with one in particular. The ferret was energetic, playful, but also in a way seemed to almost get along quite nicely with Eric who was a bit more reserved still. So as soon as Eric noticed it as well, he made up his mind. Picking up the sable ferret and going about the process of getting it as a pet. The mustelid made himself comfortable on Eric's shoulders almost wrapped around him, not like Eric put him there but well, it was a nice comfy spot.

"Emris...I'll name you Emris" he muttered as he exited the shop and walked alongside Diagon Alley, the supplies in one hand and the other moving to pet the ferret a bit. It sounded good, that was one reason why he named the ferret like this. Yes usually, Eric was one for overthinking stuff, but with things like this, it was simplicity that fit best. And Emris both sounded good and meant, at least to his understanding, a long life. So it was in a way also an auspicious name. Not that he believed much in that sort of things, but maybe...if such a thing as auspicious names existed...may as well use it.
