Jade's hands were shaking as she walked through the train, dragging her trunk behind her. It was rather inconvenient - her shaking hands, that was - because it meant her grip on her trunk kept slipping, and she had to pause periodically to get a better grip on it. The frequent pauses were certainly not helping Jade's anxiety, which was already skyrocketing. The anxiety had been... sort of manageable, during all the things leading up to this event. Learning about Hogwarts - and magic in general - had been scary, but... Jade thought she had reacted rather well. Packing, leaving behind her home in Dublin to come to London, going shopping for magical school supplies... Those had been... less manageable. Jade had freaked out at least four times. But, at least then, she had been able to sort of pretend that she was going to have to go off on her own. Now... that fact was difficult to ignore.
Deep breaths, Jade told herself. You can do this. You have to. She was on the train - she had made it on the train! That's no small accomplishment, she reminded herself. I'm handling this remarkably well for someone who only learned about this a few weeks ago. Those thoughts didn't help the feeling that everyone was watching her as she walked past train compartment after train compartment. Everyone around Jade, whether at the platform or on the train, all seemed so confident. They all seemed like they knew what they were doing, like they had known about magic and Hogwarts for more than a few weeks. Jade could feel their gazes digging into her, undoubtably judging her. This was a mistake, a part of her thought. I should have just stayed at home. Tried to avoid this issue of magic. It couldn't have been that bad. It would at least be better than this.
Oh - I've almost reached the back of the train. Jade had gotten so caught up in her thoughts she hadn't been paying attention to the compartments she passed. Suddenly worried that she had missed something, or that all the compartments were full, Jade quickly peeked into the nearest one. It was empty. Empty! Perfect, Jade thought, stepping into the compartment and dragging her trunk in behind her. She quickly got her things situated (she didn't have that many, after all), and curled up in the seat by the window, hugging her knees and trying to disappear into her hoodie. Finding an empty compartment was a great relief, but Jade still felt stressed out. She stared out the window, looking at the scenery and waiting for the train to get moving. It won't be that bad, Jade thought. Probably.

A New Beginning
Jade had been starting to zone out, finding some peace in the quiet of the window and the empty train compartment. She had just begun to relax and start thinking that this train ride wouldn't be completely horrible when someone entered the compartment. Jade was so startled, she nearly jumped up from where she was sitting. Why is someone here? I'm at the back of the train, no one should be bothering me... She managed to stop herself from jumping and instead turned towards the other person, sort of calmly. They looked to be around Jade's age, which was a relief. She wasn't sure what she would have done if she'd run into an older student - that would have been too much, for reasons Jade couldn't quite articulate.
Jade forced herself to listen to what the person had to say, and tried to smile. It came out as more of a nervous grimace. "Oh! Um, uh, of course, you can sit here," Jade said, cursing herself for how awkward she sounded. It's not like there's any way to tell this person no, anyway... She reached down to drag her trunk out of the way, though it wasn't necessary - it was already up against the window, like Jade was. "Oh, um, I'm Jade." She wasn't sure if she should introduce herself with her last name or not - was that normal? Jade didn't go around meeting new people all that often. "What's your name?"

A New Beginning
Jade blushed slightly at the compliment - she hadn't been expecting it, and it sort of threw her off balance. She rarely got compliments from people - probably because they didn't pay much attention to her. "Oh, um, thanks," Jade said, awkwardly. "It's nice to meet you, Leyah." She decided to simply call them by the first name they had introduced themselves with. Easier to remember and keep track of. It's also easier to pronounce than the other name, Jade thought. She didn't want to try and pronounce it and accidentally get it wrong - that would be embarrassing.
"I'm eleven," Jade said, in response to Leyah's question. "How about you?" Maybe they're the same age as me, she thought, hopefully. Maybe... maybe I could make a friend. The idea seemed daunting to Jade. She wasn't sure how to go about making friends, let alone remaining friends with people. Her old friends, back home, had just sort of... happened. Jade didn't know what she'd done specifically to befriend them. I can't get ahead of myself. I barely even know Leyah.
As she was sitting there, another thought occurred to Jade. I wonder if they know more about magic than I do. She was extremely new to everything, and she couldn't help thinking about her incompetence and lack of knowledge. The thoughts had been bad ever since she'd gotten on the train. Jade had managed to get them to go away for a bit, just watching the window, but they were quickly resurfacing. Probably because there was now another person. Just... go for it. Just ask. "Are you... new to all this? Magic, I mean. Or have you known about it for a while?" The words came out in a rush, and Jade almost immediately regretted asking the question. It might have been rude... She had no idea what magical people considered polite or not.

A New Beginning
"Yeah, I guess we are both first years," Jade mumbled, nervously fidgeting with her hands as she spoke. She always felt like she got so much... nervous energy whenever she had to interact, or meet people, or really do anything that involved talking. It was really annoying sometimes, but most times Jade didn't pay it any mind. "Are you, uh, excited about your first year?" She asked. It seemed like a good way to keep the conversation going. Jade had often talked about the upcoming school years with her friends back home - so that was probably a fine conversation topic. Even if they were going to be attending magical school and not regular school.
"I... don't really know anything," Jade admitted, smiling sheepishly. "My parents are both, uh, what's the word... muggles. Right? That's the term for non-magical people? Sorry, I'm really new to this..." She trailed off. Did I say something wrong? Are they going to think I'm stupid because I don't know the term? Jade did her best to ignore the thoughts. "My dad's trying to understand, but... he doesn't really get it. To be honest, neither do I. It's all so overwhelming."
Jade cut herself off from saying more - she suddenly felt incredibly self-conscious again, like all her failures were on view for everyone to see. Surely most people without magical parents have a better handle on this than I do, Jade thought. I'm an absolute mess - I can't even remember the right term for non-magical people! "Oh, sure, I'll try one," Jade said after Leyah offered the candy, grateful for the distraction. She hesitantly reached into the bag and took out a candy.

A New Beginning
Jewel was late. Per usual of course, no surprises there. In spite of countless warnings from her mother, she had left her packing until the very last minute, resulting in her misplacing her wand only to find it snagged between some clothing in her trunk that she finally found after much frantic searching. After getting an earful from her mother, the Hwang family was finally ready apparate to King's Cross Station to send the youngest off as she took her first steps to starting her first year at Hogwarts. Previously, Jewel had always yearned to go to Hogwarts ever since she was young and would be devastated every time she had to bid farewell to her older sisters after they left on the steaming train without her. Her time had finally come! In spite of the fact that she would be starting her schooling years alone, given that by the time it was her first year, her sisters who were much older than her had already graduated, she was undaunted and couldn't t wait to get to the castle.
By the time she had gotten on the train, most of the compartments were already full. As she lugged her trunk further down the train admits the noise and chatter, she finally found a compartment with two girls who appeared to be around her age already inside. The both of them looked exquisitely pretty and seemed to be sharing a bag of sweets. Tentatively, she slid open the compartment door and flashed her widest smile, "Hi could I sit with you guys? Everywhere else is almost full.." Maybe this would be her first two friends at Hogwarts...!
