Emily decided on a day off from her halfbreed investigations and rumour hunting around the school. She was back in her second home in a hope to unwind and recollect herself before she'd be due to share her findings with Casey at the upcoming Autumn Ball. She was in her one and only spot, the one that felt like was made just for her. The back of the library, at the same desk below the high arched window, the one that generously let the sunlight rest atop her books and head without burning nor blinding her. Her tarot cards, charging energy under the rays after an earlier divination, sat beside her arm as she engaged herself with a novel. A good novel. A sad novel. She already teared up at several points as she read it. She had a feeling she would need to put it away soon before risking shedding tears in public, something she didn't feel confident in today. She'd done it already in the past on other occasions. Twice was enough.
She softly pushed her ponytail out of her eyes as she kept reading, however her intuition proved right when she began reading a paragraph that foretold an upsetting revelation to its narrative. She aptly closed it over with her bookmark slotted in the page she left it at. She turned to a book on divination. What was meant to be an alternative to her light reading was decided to be a form of distraction at the last second.
She opened the book up to a random chapter. It was something she wouldn't cover until next year, but it was worth it to stop herself from compromising her emotions to a compelling yet upsetting story. Even though the textbook before her wasn't as easy to digest, it at least wouldn't emotionally twist her.
She sighed softly. She reached a finger to her cards for reassurance. She could feel the heat it gathered from the sunlight, permeating her skin and becoming positive energy.
She felt herself relax. There was a time and a place to let tears run, even if for something as trivial as gritty and nuanced characters in a fictitious setting. But right now wasn't that time.
For now, Emily just wanted to chill.

A soft bang from across the ways made its way to Emily's ears but she kept her head down with her nose still buried in her books. However, soft footsteps and a voice quickly followed.
"Are you one of those 'mystical' types of people or something?"
"Hmm?"
Emily's eyes finally lifted up to see the familiar curious glance of another student that's managed to land their eyes on her tarot cards and books. The lucky student to behold that gaze was a Gryffindor boy, whom seemed to be younger than the Huffie herself. In contrast to the last few quizzical glances she got over her possessions, this young lad appeared to be a lot more open and genuinely curious, rather than the somewhat suspicious approach to her cards and reading material. Not that there should be anything suspicious about someone simply wanting to read their textbooks anyway.
She smiled softly, finding amusement in how invested the boy seemed to be, a welcome change from the often debate portion of this type of discussion. "I'm afraid I'm no mystic or seer... But someone I know once told me that everyone has some kind of spiritual sense inside them. Some people's are more apparent than others."
She took the first card in her deck, threading it in between her fingers as she talked. "I don't think I have that strong a spiritual connection, in fact I'm quite certain it's become incredibly faint as of late, so for the last couple years I've been trying out little divination and self-healing techniques to see if I can feel anything...!"
She scooted her chair over to let the boy get a better look, remaining friendly in her gestures.
"Don't suppose you find it... Bizarre to tap into such enlightenment?" she asked gently. She may as well get that part of the discussion over with to spare her the usual, "You do realise that doesn't exist" conundrum like everyone had said to her in the past.

Well, well, well... That was quite the opposite answer Emily was expecting. It should have been something along the lines of, "That's Muggle superstition" or, "That's a folly made up by crackpots" or even, "It's not magic!" But this boy spilled none of that. He was as opposite on the fence as anyone possibly could be, as his response indicated - much to Emily's surprise but encouraging enthusiasm in equal measure.
"W-Well, yes! Heh... I suppose it wouldn't be too farfetched to say that there might be some truth to spiritualism...!"
Emily was very easy to please as a person, but this boy already managed to get into her good books in quick succession. His follow-up question cemented that notion.
"Oh! Well... I usually find it easy to unwind and let go of any weight in my body. I attributed that to my spiritual sense, or rather, a little more closely to the spiritual side of nature and the natural world, to be a bit more precise. I like animals and plants, you see, so I've always seen them as an outlet to my stress, aside from the fact that I see pleasant company in them. But nowadays, when I feed the mice and foxes outside, I don't feel... Connected, I guess? I'm not sure how to explain it, really... All I know is that I don't feel that same sense of ease or energy when I communicate with my animal buddies... Even the flowers smell a little off to me when I walk past the greenhouses..."
She sighed, before a half-hearted chuckle escaped her. "I must sound paranoid, maybe even a bit mad saying all that."

"Confidence...? Ah... I never quite thought of it like that before... But now that you mention it..."
In spite of usual appearances, Emily was a still a bit of a nervous wreck if the circumstances pushed her far enough. Her constant strive for finding the inner strength she wanted to awaken and call upon instead of people-pleasing and perfection - if not close to it - didn't really help either. Everything seemed to clash unless she was thrown into the thrall of problems before her. Hogwarts helped change a lot of that thinking for her however, the whole Halfbreed conundrum being a good example of that, but much of the self-doubt sentiment still lingered outside of her studies.
Emily smiled, though a bit weaker this time, once the lad's words had time to properly sink in. "You have a very good point... Perhaps it's a mere case of burn out on my end. Still, I can't stand not being able to find pleasure in my usual outdoorsy activities. I was hoping a bit of self-healing could help with that..." She gestured to the cards. This was usually the point where people gave her "The Eyebrow"; the one that said, "Huh??"
There was no time for that reaction however as the Gryffindor boy went on about-- "-- an evil tree that got planted somewhere and is sucking the spiritual life out of everything as we speak..!"
Emily blinked before bursting into a giggly fit. "Or that could be an option!" she just about managed to get out as her laughs contaminated her speech. "Perhaps that could be attributed to the fact that there seems to be a lot of tension in the air around the school lately. Negativity can more than often breed quicker than any sort of positive willpower, like an evil tree permeating the spiritual good, as you delightfully put it..." She stifled another laugh before being able to breathe again.
"Knowing Hogwarts, I don't think I'd be surprised if that were the case," she commented, rolling her eyes as if welcoming the prospect.

A Lil' Lesson in Cards with @Aodhan Shaw
Speech: #cfa120
Thoughts: Italics
OOC Notes: Credit to Stacey Demarco where mentioned in revelio notes
Emily wasn't going to lie; she was liking this banter between them. It was certainly a bout of fresh air in comparison to the long dribble of depression that managed to spread amongst parts of the school. This Gryffindor boy was the lucky exception clearly, going by his unintentional downplay of Emily's claims on the matter. "What do you mean by 'tension around the school'?" he said.
Probably for the better all things considered. On top of that, it was nice to be in company with someone who wasn't riddled with thoughts of division and doubts to their own safety in such a renowned school. Had Emily not stumbled upon her peers when they were on the home run of leaving a shaken past behind them at Hogwarts, she would've more than likely still had that same level of blissful ignorance her young Gryffindor acquaintance did.
She waved his question off with a polite wave of her hand. "Oh, don't mind that. Just me being paranoid," she responded, maintaining her bright persona.
She could see him eyeing the cards again. He didn't seem like the kind of guy to muss them up so she let him look at his leisure. She was proud to admit that they were beautiful cards, remarkably illustrated with a shining crimson lining on each card, all marked by a little red crest on a black background on the back of all of them.
Emily blinked when he suddenly lifted one up. She didn't think she'd seen anyone this invested in this kind of thing asides from herself, lest of all expecting it from a fellow student after so many seemed dismissive of her own interpretive practice of it. To anyone else, he would be sprouting nonsense but he wasn't technically wrong in Emily's eyes. The cards were there to guide her on how to best uplift her energy and dispel of any negative blockages. His reasoning was pretty much on the money... If only made to sound farfetched in his words.
"Do a spiritual reading, you say...?" she mused. She hummed approvingly as she politely took back the card he took, another chuckle escaping her.
"Evil tree or not, it's not a bad idea at all!"
A single card reading would suffice, she thought. With all the cards together she shuffled them and splayed them out face down. After a minute to herself to decide, she picked a card at random. OOC Note: Picked one at random with my own OOC deck, which I've canonised as Emily's IC deck - Check it out here.

"Oh...! That's interesting..."
She consulted her handbook. It had been a while she drew upon that card;
"Respect the land and especially the land you live upon. Find comfort and joy in the changing of the seasons and the green places you come in contact with. Protect and defend Mother Earth. Before you attack someone, make sure you have all sides of the story." OOC Notes: Word for word description of the aforementioned card as seen in the deck
Emily smiled amusingly. "It's not like I haven't been doing that already...!"
