Well, shit, shit, shit.

Ulysses had finished quidditch practice as they were focused on their upcoming game in a few days and a letter from his father reminding him of the promise he made to obtain his newest broom — the Moontrimmer and only for the fact that he was being manipulated to attending Hogwart's social events to appease his mother. He hadn't bothered thinking that he had more time and now it was about a week away and he had absolutely no date to this stupid thing.

Broomstick in hand with sweat-stained clothes and muddy shoes trekked its way into the Great Hall as Ulysses' tummy rumbled in hunger. He hadn't the time to deal with that right now as his eyes narrowed in quickly trying to scan through the students currently there and if, perhaps, he could get a pity date with one of them if he asked nicely.

Irrelevant Slytherin first years, older witches, annoying Gryffindors, the list went on and on as he stood with gravitas until his eyes landed on the referee and announcer of a bunch of his Broom Racing games. " Alyssea! " Ulysses was quick to make his way onto the Hufflepuff table into an empty space next to the girl, probably reeking of sweat and typical after sports stench.

" Look, I need a huge favor. My mom and dad are on my ass about being more involved. You don't have a date already to the Ball, do you? Please say no and make my day. " Fingers clasped and intertwined into a fist, Uly looked far more desperate than he ever showcased in his life.

It was the first step but he'd much rather go with someone he at least sort of knew than a complete random.

As soon as her name was called, she looked up and looked around the room. It wasn't one of her Hufflepuff mates, that was for sure, nor was it any of her other close friends; she would know their voices without any hesitation. Her frantic searching would quickly stop at the arrival of a Slytherin boy at her side.

Ulysses Drake was not an unfamiliar face. He'd participated in the first race she'd ever hosted, then played an unofficial Quidditch match during the winter. A few months later, she was on the same pitch as him for that Quidditch game against Slytherin. That all said, they weren't close, but they weren't complete strangers.

Ulysses spoke so quickly that Alyssea almost missed exactly what he was saying. She'd also jumbled what he'd said about saying no and making his day; she almost thought he wanted her to reject him. Alyssea hummed. "No, I don't, so that's your day made. Did you need one to the ball?"

Ball was fast approaching. Not that Alyssea was paying very much attention to that fact, but people were buzzing so much about it that it was hard not to take notice. The theme sounded fun. She hadn't originally thought of going but—

"I guess I don't mind going, and with you, too. Though, I might be a bit late..." Alyssea chuckled. "Broom racing is on the same day as ball, so I'll be busy with my racers and all that. Hope you don't mind?"

The seconds between his ask and Alyssea's answer felt like an eternity. A face of sincere confusion washed over the Hufflepuff's features for a second until she said that she was dateless and that she would go with him. " You're such a lifesaver! " Relief relaxed Uly's furrowed brows as he relaxed himself into the bench before relaxing he was still at the Hufflepuff table.

" What? Talk about some poor timing. This school I tell you, what idiots. " He couldn't believe it and shook his head in disbelief. " I wasn't planning on going right at the beginning anyway. How about I come cheer you on and then i'll meet you at the Hogwarts steps once you get already. My dad already sent me this stupid outfit but you can wear whatever. " Uly wasn't sure if that's what she wanted to hear, but it was nice, right? He didn't care what she was going to be wearing.

" Food should be good too. Although, i've never been to one of these balls so i'm not sure what goes on. I'm usually at the kid's table. " At that point, Ulysses figured he probably yapped too much and got himself ready to stand up. " I guess, let me know if you need anything before then? Thanks again, I owe you big. "

Alyssea shrugged. Truth be told, when they planned the date for races, she'd completely forgotten to factor the ball in the decision-making process and part of that was also her initial hesitation in going. "Something like that. Races don't go for long, fortunately, so everyone should still have enough time to get ready if we schedule it right. But I'll definitely meet you by the steps." Alyssea nodded.

Right, this was also the time to panic for an outfit. Was a week enough time to potentially owl her parents about sending her some extra clothes? She brought closet staples this time around, so she probably had a black dress she could just throw a jacket over. "I'll have to double check the theme and my wardrobe, but it won't be that flashy," she chuckled, "I'm sure your outfit is fine." It would probably be miles better than what she'd wear.

Alyssea hummed as she remembered the last two balls she'd been to. "Food and drinks are up to the planning committee. We'll just show up and have a good time. It's usually really fun." She elected to omit the part about nearly drowning this time last year. Her fear of the water was getting better now, but the drowning sensation would stick with her for a long time.

As Ulysses headed to his own table, Alyssea nodded. "It's no problem! Guess we'll keep in touch during the week." Alyssea waved. She quickly added, "Oh, and good luck for Quidditch this weekend!"
