A Quiet Morning Closed

(Open for interaction!)

Sitting at breakfast, Cecily wishes for the first time that she wasn’t in Hufflepuff; had she been put into Ravenclaw, she could be sitting with her sister right now, and not having to sit here, quite alone at a table bustling with people chattering merrily. She glances over to the Ravenclaw table, scanning it for Mia, and she soon notices an unmistakably pretty and serious face; Cecily gives her sister a nervous smile, but Mia is absorbed in conversation with two other third-years, one lanky and red-haired, the other dark-eyed and olive-skinned.

Somehow, the Great Hall looks even bigger this morning than it did last night, and the Hufflepuff table even more full of people. Cecily sighs, and draws her focus back to the food, but it’s difficult to stimulate an appetite. Some of her excitement has waned, and her stomach flutters as she thinks about everything that’s going to happen today. Starting classes — what if she’s rubbish at everything? What if she has to sit all alone, in every single one? What if she doesn’t make any friends — what if she never makes any friends? Cecily chews anxiously on one of her long plaits as she looks around, wringing her hands slightly under the table.

Right. Breathe in, then out again; panicking won’t help her. Dropping her plait and swallowing anxiously, Cecily picks up a small piece of white toast and, with shaking hands, spreads a thin layer of butter on it, then forces herself to tear off a piece and put it in her mouth. It scratches her throat as she swallows, and she isn’t hungry at all, but it’ll be better to face the day with something in her stomach, and she makes herself finish it.

Sipping on a glass of water, Cecily begins to look around, for anyone else sitting by themself, or who looks like they might be willing to talk to her. If she doesn’t want to have to sit through another silent meal, she’s going to have to make some friends, and what better time to start than the present?
