The cries of exotic birds happily sang their mid afternoon songs dancing in the bright pristine sunlight. Summer was coming to a close which brought a new start to some people's lives. A young petite girl laid in her bed covered with her light auburn brown hair displaying an unruly array of curls surrounding the golden skinned girl that rested among the covers. Her left arm was thrown over her face while ignoring the bustling of the quaint village outside her window. Of course Isadora had taken to the shelter of hiding in her room normally she would have her curtains closed to hide even further in her secluded den, but alas her mother Makaria decided it was time for the girl to awaken after all it has been a year since the girls ‘accident’ and hiding away in her room was not going to slide anymore.

Groaning from the sheer sunlight pouring into her room Isadora sat up, her sapphire blue eyes squinted while she frowned slightly. The girl debated on just closing the curtains herself only to find that the curtains were no longer hanging above her window. Blinking in confusion Isadora swung her legs over her soft heavenly bed, her bare feet gracing the cool wooden floor. Isadora felt her heart race as a sense of anxiety seemed to spring upon her like a predator hunting its prey. Gripping her chest with her left hand Isadora took a shaky breath before slowly walking towards her vanity mirror staring at her reflection.

The girl gazed softly at herself. Isadora lifted up her right hand pressing the palm of her hand against the cool glass mirror. Her sapphire eyes seemed to soften as she sighed once again looking at the mess her hair seemed to be in the girl brushed it out yesterday and the day before that and the day before that and none the less it always seemed to always be a mess whenever she woken up though maybe that was her fault.

Isadora walked out of her room heading to the bathroom to tame her hair first than the young girl figured she would eat until the smell of chicken, spices and steamed vegetables waft down the hall. Gulping the young girl thought for a second her hair could wait after all she was hungry and may get lucky and one of her mothers could tame her hair instead!

Isadora made her way down the hall peeking her head around the corner cautiously. Her ears burned as every little sound seemed to bother her. Still the girl gritted her teeth one would think she would be used to the heightened senses but she still has not adjusted as well as she liked. Of course it was her fault in the first place, she thought bitterly. Shaking her head quietly the young girl’s attention was brought forward as a thump of a plate echoed softly towards her. Makaria was setting the table placing the plated food while Luciana was finishing the last bit of lunch. Both women smiled fondly towards their daughter.

Smiling nervously Isadora inched forward taking her spot at the table. The young girl had to admit she loved the support her mothers have given her, but she also had to admit that support also scared her to pieces. The girl was a monster after all. If she ever forgot to take the wolfsbane potion she could be a danger not only to her loving mothers but the rest of her family that lived in the village. That fear seemed to drive Isadora into her hole in the first place, the fear of hurting those around her seeing the damage that she could do without knowing it.

A gentle touch was all it took to startle Isadora from her thoughts. Shaking slightly the young girl looked around frantically for a minute before realization hit her like a truck. The girls sapphire blue eyes gazed into Luciana’s bright forest green eyes that had a tint of light brown specks dancing in them. The woman’s dark golden skin seemed to glow lightly from the intruding sunlight as she knelt down beside Isadora the woman’s expression held a hint of concern for her daughter, while Makaria edged closer leaning slightly over the petite girl giving her a concern eyes with her dark chocolate like brown eyes as they locked with Isadora’s sapphire blue eyes.

Isadora bit the inner part of cheek slightly before feigning a smile to her mothers she did not wish to worry them more than they must already feel, because of the young girl. Isadora hated the fact that she seemed powerless if it wasn’t her mind overthinking about outcomes that have not happened or occurred it the fear of the unthinkable of the things that could happen.

“I’m okay really! We should eat before the food gets cold.”

Isadora spoke softly, her tone was sincere with a hint of a tremble. She could not help the anxiety that seemed to linger around her; it just slowly grew to be a normal part of her everyday life at this point and time. Isadora accepted that fate it was her destiny the girl had no doubt about it her destiny was something that seemed to be an every day nightmare. A constant nightmare some day’s Isadora would be fine. She would go on life like it was normal other days certain sounds would trigger her. The young girl could not even stand seeing the sight of small mice running past her without thinking a giant canine carnivorous monster would appear mere feet away from her.

Blinking softly Isadora was brought back to reality from her thoughts noting the worried glances both her mothers would give her once again the young girl feigned a smile as she began to dig into her lunch. Isadora felt guilty for worrying her mothers. Isadora glanced over at Makaria also known as Muma to the young girl while Luciana preferred to go by maman. It helped the two women to differentiate between the two. Makaria gazed over at Isadora watching her every moment like a hawk while Luciana glanced between her loving wife and daughter, also slightly concerned.

No matter what the women tried to do to help Isadora feel safe and open up about her feelings, the more it felt to the two mothers that their young daughter would shut down. Luciana wanted to send Isadora to summer camp with her sister in law and nephews but Makaria was a bit concerned about sending Isadora that far even though she had family and the other woman was concerned for daughter. While Isadora seemed to shut that plan down rather quickly she did not wish to be surrounded by other children in fear of being a danger to them.

Luciana continued to gaze softly at her small family placing her fork down gently beside her plate. It was time she brought up the news she wanted to speak about after all it was time for this conversation the woman thought to herself.

“While I have both of you in the same place we need to have a discussion about Isa’s education.”
Luciana spoke in an elegant tone. Her Spanish accent seemed strong as she directed her attention to her wife and loving daughter.

Isadora glanced up from her plate chewing slowly her sapphire blue eyes held curiosity as she tilted her head slightly to the left. Her mind grew curious to what her maman had to bring up and what exactly she had to say that involved all three of them. Isadora gulped slightly, feeling her heart race. Gritting her teeth slightly trying to calm her heartbeat slightly Isadora glanced over anxiously at her Muma then back at her maman.

“What about it my love?”

Makaria spoke softly, her tone was sweet and straight to the point as she gazed admiringly at her wife.

Isadora blinked quietly as a piece of chicken fell from the grasp of her mouth landing onto her plant. Her face dusted pink as she quickly wiped her face. Why did her mothers want to speak of her education? Did her maman not want to homeschool her anymore and if not what would she do? It was not like she could go to castelobruxo; she was an abomination and a danger to the other students. One reason why she refused to go to school her first year and be homeschooled. Even though she yearned to be around other kids her age she also dreaded it to the end.

“I prefer homeschooling. It is de safer option.”

Isadora spoke timidly glancing at both her mothers her eyes darting back and forth between the two quickly. Feeling her heart race once again as her hand gripped her fork the ends of her knuckles turned slightly white from her grip.

Feeling the air tensing slightly Luciana turned her full attention to Makaria finding it would be easier to convince her wife to allow there daughter to go to Castelobruxo with her cousins it would be a good learning opportunity plus the young girl could try and make friends which she desperately needed.

“I heard that Castelobruxo are allowing unique children into the school dis year moving forward. Wouldn’t it be nice to attend with your cousins and make friends?”

Luciana spoke softly as she took a bite out of her lunch focusing her gaze towards Markaria who gazed softly at her wife nodding slightly in agreement though she had to admit she knew Luciana wanted the best for their daughter Markaria was slightly concerned but also relieved if Isadora went to school she could try and have a normal life as she could and not like she would be entirely alone either she would have her cousins.

“That is a good idea, actually my love. Darling, don't you want to attend Castelobruxo with your cousins? It would be a good opportunity.”
Isadora blinked slightly as the young girl’s jaw dropped slightly and her muma lost it, not only that, her maman to! They wanted the girl to attend a school full of children and professors. What if she forgot to take her wolfsbane, what if she hurts somebody, what if she got sent to prison because she hurt someone on purpose. Many things swam in the girl's mind as she gritted her teeth. Standing up quickly Isadora glanced quickly at her mothers as if they truly lost their minds.

“Are you crazy? I’m a monster, I can not just go to a school full of people!”

Isadora blurted her words quickly, fear and anger trembling out of her mouth as she bolted out the door to her home.

Bare feet bombarded against the cool earthy ground as she made her way to the one place she knew was uninhabited at the moment. Her aunt Sarai’s home which was close yet far away from the girl. As the young girl neared her aunt’s home she barged through the doors not bothering to close the front door making a beeline to the one room she knew was her safe haven. Barging into Alphonse’s room Isadora grabbed the covers from his bed before darting into his closet covering herself head to toe like a burrito the young made herself home in the corner of the closet enjoying the darkness that was slowly closing in on her. Could the girl handle that situation differently yes but she chose to deal with her actions later right now she rather hide in fear from herself and others in her cousin's closet.

Ragged breaths tore from the pubescent boy, beads of sweat snaking down his determination-etched face from his coiled hair. Steadfast was the pounding of his heart that drummed wildly against his chest, the rhythmic beat identical to the tune of the basketball bouncing against the ground.

Through the vestiges of his determination were short-lived glimmers of Alphonse’s smile, beaming a bright as the sun. He was, without a doubt in his mind, a star in the making - boisterous and unapologetic.

Muttered, curses and slur-riddled exchanges were thrown with abandon under the breath of the Alphonse and his friends as they maneuvered through the other with equal tact. Phillipe Bedgine, a neighbor from his oceanside village, would toss the ball with accuracy to the elder Toussaint progeny, and with a practiced leap, Alphonse would accumulate yet another few points for his team. Following was the exclamations of both jubilee and aggravation, and a demand of another game.

”Nah, nah, I’m done,” Alphonse retorted in native patois, waving his mates off with a humored grin, “I’m done carrying y'all on my back. Take the L and give me my ball.” And with that, the athletic teenager would begin the short trek back to his French-colonial styled villa.

Greeting his father who quietly labored outside tinkering with his motorcycle, Alphonse stepped indoors. The rhythmic thumping of a dribbling basketball echoed the towering giant’s presence through the hallway. Alphonse remained verbally mute as he clamorously sauntered through the house while skillfully recoiling the basketball off the floor, walls, and between his long, sturdy legs.

A hefty sigh resounded from his closed-eyed mother who was meditating on the wooden floor in the center of a white, intricate, chalk-scrawled veve in the spare room. As Alphonse treaded down the hall, his darken gaze fell upon his twin brother, Briar, who was nose-deep into a book in his own room. The boys exchanged polite nods to one another as the Alphonse swaggered by before lightly kicking the door of his room wide open before dramatically shooting the ball into a wall-mounted hoop from a distance. The basketball would land in the hoop with a swish before bouncing off the floor and onto his bed.

It was then that he noticed his duvet on his bed was missing and some knick-knacks on the floor scattered about.

”Ma, did ya take the bed cover?” Alphonse bellowed out while scratching his sweat-lined forehead. His mother would respond back with a curt “no” before the sound of a door clicked from the hallway.

A muttered curse of annoyance aimed at his mother escaped his lips as he closed the door behind him and stooped down to pick up his things from the floor. If his mother intended to meddle in his belongings, she could have had the decency to have at least tidied up the mess she so rudely left behind — that was his thought, of course, until Alphonse slowly opened the closet door to find a pair of blue eyes boring into his closet wall.

Those sapphire eyes belonging to none other than his cousin Isa, who burrito’d her lithe body in his thick navy duvet. So, it wasn’t his mother who had barged into his room after all. Whoops.

His smile was kind and welcoming despite his earlier frustration that quickly vanished upon greeting Isadora. The boy soundlessly stepped into the closet before shutting them in the darkness, only cracking the door to offer a sliver of light. He’d take a seat on the other side of the space before leaning his back and resting his head against the cool wall.

”Hey cousin,” he greeted in a voice barely above a whisper, “Kind of nice and cozy in here, no?”

It didn’t take much to discern there was trouble on her brain, but Alphonse didn’t desire or intend to pry into Isadora’s woes immediately. The elder boy would rather try to take the edge off his cousin’s mental with pure charisma and humor before diving into her woes — that was, of course, assuming she was in a good headspace to share her worries with him. Either way, Alphonse wouldn’t judge.

Isadora was lost in her own world, her sapphire blue eyes downcasted staring down at the closet floor. The young girl's heart ached as she wondered deeply to herself. The young girl knew deep down she should be delighted to go to school to make friends and be around other children, but that feeling of delight was nothing but dread for the young girl. Maybe she was too insecure about her situation or the fact if anything were to happen she could be a danger.

Isadora gripped the blanket tighter still lost in her mind, everything seemed to drown in her ears that was until she heard a familiar voice shout something. Isadora blinked in confusion. Did summer camp end and when did it end? Was the girl too focused on hiding away from everyone she did not realize when the occupants of this quaint home returned?

Covering herself further with the covers the young girl stayed as silent as a mouse not wishing to cause any problems further. Sapphire blue eyes gazed anxiously at the door just when Alphonse opened it slowly, her eyes catching his. Staying huddled up against the wall of the closet, Isadora watched Alphonse curiously as the boy sat across from her.

Isadora feigned a soft smile hearing Alphonse voice drift slightly towards her from his spot across from her. Isadora rested her head atop of her knees gazing softly at her cousin; her mind seemed to be lost in her own little world.

“It is especially sense that Muma stoled my curtains and made my room too bright.”

She spoke softly, still resting her head upon her knee caps. Isadora seemed conflicted as she stayed quiet for a bit. Her mind seemed to be lost in thought she was conflicted on many things though she slowly wished to be normal the young witch knew she was nowhere close to it.

“Alphonse? If you were a monster and you maman told you dat you would go to a school full of people you would think it’s crazy wouldn’t you?”

Isadora asked curiously her sapphire blue eyes were soft while she seemed a bit uncertain. Isadora at one point would have been excited to go Castelobruxo but now with how fate has turned the young girl has a bigger fear of going around people of course her main fear are people learning about her condition. Who would wish to be friends with a monster in the girls eyes Lycanthropy is a danger she is a danger. Even around her family who she treasures, the girl fears the worst possible scenarios. Suppose that was a major reason she hid most of the time rather than be seen by others.

The young golden skinned girl had no idea what to do nor think she truly wanted to fit in but she also knew that was long gone for her. Stuck to live life alone or at least in her world she did have her family but having her family closed scared her even more. Only if she could get over her fear only if she could be normal.

afternoon, summer break 2024 in jacmel, haiti

At the notion of Isadora's meddling mothers stealing her blackout curtains, the boy couldn't contain the subdued yet warmhearted chuckle that escaped his lips, subsequent to the eyeroll that the dimly lit closet space concealed. Mothers—they were always meddling, and it seemed Isadora was also a victim of this curse as was Alphonse.

“Well, my closet is always yours if you need shelter,” he responded in a murmur with an offering of a docile smile, “Next time I'll make sure it's cleaner for you." He paused a beat as his passive smile shifted to a mischievous grin as a notion came to mind: "But if you want, I can come over and pin one of my blankets up in the windows. If your mamas take it down, I'll come back and pin another one up, hm? Until they give up?”

With the small sliver of light of the afternoon Caribbean sun that peeked through into the closet, the Toussaint boy caught a glimpse of the troubled, faraway glint in her sapphire eyes. His younger cousin had cocooned in his polyester duvet and sensed her inner turmoil as if it were a living, breathing entity sitting along beside them. Closing the closet door with a soft click, Alphonse presented Isadora the refuge from the sunlight that flooded his bedroom that she had longed for, and the silence that filled the space would belong to her however the girl decided to utilize it—to talk, to think, to meditate—just as long as she wasn't alone.

As the seconds turned to minutes of silence, Alphonse’s gaze reluctantly peeled from the wall that was adjacent to him and shifted his eyes to where she was seated in the pitch dark. His gaze couldn't make out her shape in the dark, but the sound of his polyester duvet brushing against itself caught his ear like a whisper before her inquiry filled the void.

Humming outwardly in thought to her query, Alphonse shrugged nonchalantly before muttering: “I would say that it’s a blessing, maybe.” His gaze turned downcast as the pubescent boy attempted a more serious and refined answer to satiate Isadora's inner turmoil.

After some additional thought, the Toussaint boy quickly muttered, “You are a good person, Isa. You're more than your curse, you know? Our familia would not let you go if they didn't trust and love you. Your condition—" he took a staggering breath upon memory of that night, "—it is scary, but that's not who you are. You're better. You're a good person who deserves joy, new adventures, and new friendships. I swear this on all the gods."

In a desperate bid to temper the tension and melancholy surrounding them, Alphonse sounded a bombastic chuckle, “Besides, you’ll have me with you every step of the way! I will protect you, and my maman will stuff my bags full of potions to ensure you'll be okay.”
