Absolutely Charming!

@Reyna EvergreenFor some, the autumnal weather provides a sense of comfort and coziness. From snuggling under a blanket in front of a crackling fire, to indulging in a rich hot chocolate drink laden with melting marshmallows, October was a season so many enjoyed. Karlie did not. After the slightest whisper of cold air brushed against her cheeks, she had donned her Gryffindor scarf and whisked on her warmest cloak. She couldn't understand anyone who would prefer icy rain to the glow of sunshine, yet she knew that being outside in all weathers was certainly better than hibernating inside for months. So, with great internal cursing, she made her way out into the Hogwarts Courtyard.
The courtyard was busy, as usual. There were students of all ages walking through to get to their classes, some stood in small groups discussing how their days had been, even a couple of boys were animatedly describing what they had seen in Transfiguration. It was a pleasant atmosphere. Whilst the library was warm and soothing for a spot of reading, Karlie thought that it would be a good change of pace to sit herself down somewhere different. Besides, she wasn't inundated with friends; this place was as good as any to try and strike up a conversation. The waves of anxiety that flooded her insides at the thought of conversing with strangers were gently subsiding. In fact, she had experienced a few positive interactions already, which was more than she had been anticipating for the whole year! Feeling determined, she stepped out into the forecourt.
Almost immediately, something, or rather someone, caught her attention. It was a girl a little older than herself seemingly practicing a charm. Karlie hadn't seen a lot of this outside of the classroom, mainly due to her own avoidance of being anywhere remotely social, and she watched from a distance intently. The way the girl's wand gently danced in the crisp air was encapsulating. After spending so much time at home reading all about the theory of charms, it was wonderful to see something being practiced in the flesh, save for the household ones she was so familiar with.
Karlie's nerves seemed to disappear as she focused her attention on the girl's magic. Intuitively, she padded forward, her thick scarf tight around her mouth and chin, and she quietly stepped into the girl's eyeline.
"Excuse me," Karlie started, untucking her chin from her scarf. "I wanted to see if... er-I... you're practicing a charm, aren't you? The lessons here are simply fascinating, but I wanted to ask what you're practicing? Is it...?"
Karlie's brow furrowed in thought as she analysed the girl's wand movements. Her mind thought back to all the books she had read in the past to see if she could recognise the movements, as if she was scanning an index of spells.
"Is it some sort of healing charm, perchance?"

Maybe some would say Reyna was in too deep. She had read almost every healing spell she could think of from the books that her grandpa had given her that summer. She was obsessed. Those who said that were not wrong. She took time out of her every day to go get some fresh air and practice some healing magic. Especially with the new bandaging charm she had learned. She had found a pole that seemed relatively okay with her bandaging it many times in a row. Okay maybe that was a little much but, the pole wasn't biting her or anything. So she took that as a yes. Not that she expected the pole to bite her anyway. That would be totally weird. So on October 4th that day in Autumn, Reyna made her way to the Courtyard to practice this charm again. She was getting quite good. She stood near the pole and chanted, she chanted, “Fer-rool-lah” putting an emphasis on the “rool” part like she had done hundreds of times before. She even remembered doing it on a person once. The bandage charm worked like she expected and wrapped around the pole. Suddenly, there was a voice beside her questioning about the charm that she was doing. From the looks of she looked like a first year. She smiled. The Gryffindor from the looks of it seemed quite into Charms. "Yes, it is! You're quite smart! I am practicing a healing charm. It is called the bandaging and you will learn it in your third year in Charms." she said. Reyna motioned to a nearby bench where she had her things and she sat down. "I'm Reyna Evergreen by the way, third year Hufflepuff. What's your name?" She grabbed her water bottle and drank some up. Checking her watch, she noted that she had quite some time until her next class, so she began to talk to this girl. "Are you enjoying Charms so far?" she asked. |

Absolutely Charming!
It wasn't usually in Karlie's nature to approach someone and strike up a conversation. In most cases, it was something she actively avoided. Perhaps it was the castle's fascinating charm or a change in her character, but slowly, she was realizing this desire to befriend and become a lot more social was becoming ever more prevalent. The feeling was very curious.
As the girl spoke, Karlie was awash with an inner calm. She felt her tense shoulders relax and she took a silent breath in. If every interaction she had was initially as good as this, she'd never stop talking, especially if it was about magic! Her eyes darted to the pole (which was looking very secure and healthy thanks to the impressive bandage) and she smiled. There was a very vague and glassy image in her mind that may have been a memory. She could have sworn she had seen her mother use this very charm once upon a time on her sister, possibly rectifying an accident that had occurred in the garden. Although not certain, knowing her sister, who constantly climbed trees and ran around, it was probable.
Karlie let out a shy smile as Reyna invited her to sit beside her on the bench. She sat slowly and nodded eagerly.
"I love it," she breathed, visualizing her lessons. "It's really incredible and so interesting. Reading all about charms is wonderful, but it's amazing to see the magic appear in front of you, especially made by your own hand!"
She rubbed her hands together in a feeble attempt to warm them up.
"I'm Karlie Keys, and I'm a Gryffindor; it's my first year here. Do you want to keep using charms in the future?"
She cleared her throat, realizing she didn't make sense. While she felt calm, she couldn't help but stumble over her words slightly.
"What I mean is... that bandage - it looks really good. Do you want to work with charms in the future? Like... healing people? Or maybe working as a teacher?"

Reyna smiled at this girl's love and fascination for charms. She was glad that she enjoyed it. If she hadn't know she was a Gryffindor, well she would have thought she was a Ravenclaw. She smiled. "Yes, it really is wonderful to see charms work firsthand. I remember the first time I saw magic. It really is fascinating!" she replied. Reyna nodded her head at the girl's introduction. Her name was Karlie. That was a nice name! "It's nice to meet you Karlie!" Then Karlie continued on to ask her about her future. Reyna smiled. To be honest she was not sure what she wanted her future to be like. But over the summer she had discovered her interests. She loved healing magic a ton. Hence the reason she was practicing it a lot. "I would love to be a healer when I grow up! Not sure if I can really achieve that in the future, but maybe it is a possibility. A teacher? Maybe. But it depends in what." she answered. She looked at her wand and twirled it around. "Honestly, I don't think I'll know what I want to be until I'm in like my fifth year. But healing sounds nice." she added. She smiled at Karlie once again. "Enough about me! How about you? How's your first year been so far? Is charms your favorite class?" she asked. She took a deep breathe of fresh air. It was a nice day after all and she was glad to be sitting outside, and making new friends. |

Absolutely Charming!
Karlie watched with a smile as she listened to Reyna speak about her thoughts for the future. It was a difficult question, but she couldn't help her inquisitiveness. There was a lot of opportunity within the wizarding world and it was difficult to pigeon-hole yourself into one box. Playing to your strengths, Karlie assumed, would land the best chance of success. For example, a lot if the Professors she had encountered had different occupations before becoming a teacher. Maybe they had realised their true calling was teaching, and perhaps they could only realise that after experiencing a job first hand.
It made Karlie think a little about her own prospects. She had always wanted to work in a position of power, such as being the Minister of Magic herself. Being able to influence and inspire seemed like a very attractive goal and a sincere calling in life. However, she wasn't too certain anymore. Whilst she was intelligent and felt she could grasp concepts and ideas well, she would rather work by herself and without company. Karlie was still adjusting to becoming more social and making friends. As she was learning day by day, it was difficult, but definitely not impossible. Still, being the Minister of Magic was arguably the most social job in the world; you had to address each and every magical individual, and have connections with muggles in their government. It probably wasn't for her, at least not with her current mindset.
"My first year has been great," Karlie began. "It's been so inspiring. I can't wait to immerse myself in more of the classes. And... everyone is surprisingly friendly. I... I thought people wouldn't like me or-or they wouldn't want to talk to me, or something."
She paused.
"But they do. It's nice. It makes me feel good inside." she said, smiling.
Feeling a little awkward talking about herself, she sat up straight and nuzzled into her scarf.
"Could you show me that charm again? Or another one you've been practicing? I didn't mean to stop you when you were working, I just thought it was really fascinating."

She listened as Karlie talked about how her first year had been. She felt herself getting lost in the nostalgia. Her first year had been great, her second year, even better, and her third year, well, hopefully even better. She giggled at that thought. She found herself enjoying talking to this young girl. It was probably the relatability. She had felt the same way about the people not liking her. Or so that was until she had met her bestie Linda. She smiled feeling happy for Karlie. "Yes! I felt the same way, until I met my bestie. It will work out in the end. From how long I have talked to you, I can tell you are a great person!" she said. The silence remained for a little while, as she remembered her first meeting of her friends in library. That had been amazing. She wondered where her friends Hannah was now. She had apparently moved away to another school, which was sad. But she had new friends. Many of them. She fell out of her thoughts when Karlie asked her to show the charm again. "I don't mind! Is there something particular that you would like to see? I could do a charm from last year." The charm she had in mind was the reducio charm. It would shrink something. She took her necklace off and said, "I could perform the shrinking charm on my necklace?" |
