Charming study secession PV: Eric Kim Closed

For some reason, Oliver was getting a little worried that Eric wouldn't show up. After all, how far away could the Gryffindor common room really be? The Slytherin one was in the basement and Oliver made it to the library before Eric had. So it seemed at least. He looked around a little impatiently for the boy. When he finally spotted him. "That's fine." He told him with a slight nod.

Oliver had opened his mouth to say something else when he saw Eric had walked away again. Leaving him there with his jaw open like some sort of fool. He closed it, and huffed a little. The two boys never really talked much outside of class. So this was all new to Oliver. Seeing and talking with Eric outside of academics in the classroom. He didn't know if he was always like this, Late to plans. (even though the two didn't set an exact time, just 'after class'.) and if he just walked away after things.

When Eric had walked away Oliver choose that as good enough time to pull out his charms and DADA books. The ones he had brought from his dorm. Placing them on the table in a way he would think was quite nice and neat. Much like his desk during class. Everything with it's place. He got his homework out to, ink and some quills. Now just had to wait for Eric to return from wherever he had went. Perhaps the bathroom, or he forgot something. Ollie didn't know.

It did not take long after his mind wandered to every scenario that Eric came back. Oliver was about to make a snide, or snarky remark about him just walking off. When he set the books down. All of witch looked to be stuff that would be helpful for the homework. Based purely on the spines. "Oh, well. Thanks, I appreciate that." Oliver didn't know how to feel about it.

On one hand, it was quite nice of him. Ollie was not a huge fan of sharing things like books. Did Eric know that? Or was he not a fan of sharing as well? OR Was Eric just trying to buy Oliver's friendship in hopes to get him distracted in class, So Eric could get all the answers right?! More then unlikely. One could never be to sure.

He looked up to see what Eric was doing, so maybe he could one up the other boy. It was just studying though, it it was quite hard to 'one up' someone in something self paced. He saw him start working on the homework, so Oliver went to doing that to. He opened up his books, reading the questions, and re-reading some of the passages, checking his notes, all to make sure he had the very best chance of getting it all right.

He wasn't sure if Eric wanted talking during this, so it really was studying together. Or if it was more so a study in the same area type of thing. He also wasn't sure why he cared. He never really studied with other people before, so if he had to choose one reason why he cared. It would be so he didn't make a fool of himself, and get embarrassed for doing something wrong. "How are you liking class so far?" Oliver asked, just to fill the quiet. Looking up from his work eager for an answer. If he knew how Eric was liking classes, Maybe Oliver could find out why he was always trying as hard as Oliver was.

Oliver whished he was better at this.

He also whished he didn't whish he was better at this. He did not like not knowing how to do things, or having to admit he was bad at things, or admitting he was wrong, or admitting he needed help, or- he really just didn't like having to show people that he may not be the smartest, or best at everything. If anyone asked, he was.

In the few moments Eric was taking to reply, it again allowed Oliver's mind to wander. Was he not a fan of small talk? Was that it? Or was Eric regretting asking Oliver to do this? Then, he responded. He listened and nodded, he could understand where Eric was coming from. "I have to say I can agree with that. It's still early thought. So maybe later we will learn more practical magic, and maybe, just maybe." Oliver had a light smile playing on his face, like the idea excited him. "The professor will let us practice spells on actual creatures."

He liked the class to, was really looking forward to more. Even though in the few weeks they'd been at Hogwarts Oliver was quickly finding out spell casting was not really his best skill. Much closer to his worst one if he was being honest. He hated that to. Some of the muggle born students were getting the spells faster then him. How embarrassing. Yet, Oliver's logic, if he acted like nothing was wrong. No one would know. And he was still better then them, because his blood was pure. So he would have to get spell casting down eventually. If anyone tried to question him on it, he could always blame his wand. It wasn't a big problem. (it was indeed)

"I think it's rather easy," There it was, the ego. Couldn't let his rival/not official rival know he couldn't do things. He had to be the better one there. Because he was. Easy as that. Oliver shrugged. "I'm hoping it gets more challenging as the years go on." He told Eric this as he got back to writing his homework. With all the effort he put into studying it may be no wonder he thought it was easy. At least the work, work part. Not spell casting.

There was a slight...interest...or intrigue as Oliver talked about spells on actual creatures. In the context that Eric talked about, which really implied unforgivable curses, for Oliver to suggest that. Then again...how would they even learn about these spells if not by trying it? Of course not on humans or other wizards, that much as clear. It was not his intention. But one had to admit that in order to learn something, they had to practice it. In order to learn how to defend from something, they had to learn about it first. So it made sense...or well...to some extent anyways.

As Oliver started to boast about how easy it was Eric leaned a bit to see what he was writing, spotting something and smiling a bit. "You got that spell incantation wrong.And imps are really not as dangerous as to need such aggressive spells we didn't even learn yet." How Eric knew this was debatable, about the unlearned spells that is. Though it could be easily attributed to him just reading ahead a bit since it was in the upcoming lessons. "Just an usual spark charm would do.They are mischievous beings, but not that complicated" one could even swear there was a slight smug look on Eric's face, a not so commonly seen one, if ever really since he was quite expressive now. It was as if he was taking some sort of delight in correcting Oliver JUST as he was "hoping for it to be more challenging". Well to be fair Eric was giving him a challenge ok? Plenty of that. Truth be told though, he was not really meaning it in a rude or mean way, though Eric could definitely do with wording this differently, and not looking as smug.

Though just as easily and "suddenly" he went back to his own homework here starting to work on it properly, reading the assignments again and again before starting to look through the books for some information it seemed, research? Most likely that, yes.

"What?" He quickly said to Eric's words, that had to be false, his work had to be perfect, he was always sure to check, and check, and- crap. It was wrong. He let out a small 'mph' noise. How dare he correct his work, but also, thanks for correcting his work so he didn't get a bad grade. This was not helping him know what to think of the Gryffindor. Oliver looked at the books again, and then his notes. Double crap. He had written it down wrong in his notes to.

There was only one good explanation here, Eric had distracted him in class. With the remarks they had been sharing back and fourth in class. Yes, that just had to be it. "I guess I did." He said a little gruffly, a small blush of embarrassment flushed his cheeks. It was not often he needed to be corrected. He hated it. Knowing he had been wrong about something. Oliver quickly scratched out the wrong answer, and put the correct one. Great. Now the professor would know he'd had it wrong at first, and then would probably know that he had needed help with it. So annoying.

He could see the slight smug look on his face. Did Eric dare to think he was better now? Now that he'd corrected Oliver? Then he dare just go back to his own work like it was nothing? Ok, that was a stupid reason. But reason enough. Oliver was not a fan of Eric Kim. Correcting him, then looking all smug like that. If he wasn't in a library he would call Eric out for that. Well, ok. He could do it anyways. "Thanks for the help, I guess, but there's no need to look smug about it."

Oliver had found the solution, He said thanks. A slight admittance that he had needed the help. But then, WAM!, hit Eric with the call out of his smugness. If anything it was to make himself feel better about getting it wrong. "Honestly don't know how I missed that." He looked at his paper with distaste. The crossed out ink smudge mocking and taunting him of his mistake. This study session was proving to be, something. That much was for sure.

He chuckled a bit, and honestly that sounded quite genuine. Nothing exaggerated or put for show for that matter. "I was just trying to help." Was he? Was he not? Maybe he was taking delight in making Oliver this paranoid? Maybe he wasn't...who knew? Kid couldn't be THAT mean right? Then again...kids can be mean and malicious as well. But uncertain whether that was the case here.

That being said he did wipe that smug look off his face as he continued to jot down what he needed for the homework. "What's your favorite subject?" he asked eventually as he was writing something down about imps. Was this yet another strategy? Keep Oliver distracted? In all honesty, Eric meant it as direct as possible. It was to fill in some of the silence to not make it awkward either for him or for the slytherin student. Formality at best. Something to keep the atmosphere as normal and casual as possible despite the underlying possible tension between them that was most likely felt throughout that part of the library like something able to even be cut with a knife.

"DADA seems to not be among them." he added a bit as an afterthought after most likely having noticed the distaste. Ok after he said that, Eric had to admit that it did sound worse than he meant it. "But there must be something you like more, right?" Yeah that did it...that saved it...of course...

Now he was laughing at him?! Way to add salt to his wound, He huffed and looked back at his books, since it was clear his notes could no longer be trusted. "I know that." He said in response. Though really, who could be sure? If he wasn't seeing the right answer there in the book, he would have assumed Eric had been tricking him. A form of sabotage. He was rather thankful that smug look was finally gone. Even if it wasn't there for a long time in the first place. Some people really.

He asked about his favorite class, and Oliver had been about to respond when Eric apparently just had to make a comment. No defense against the dark arts was not one of his favorites. It was among his least favorites if he was being honest. With all the spells they learned in class, It was to no fault of the professor, Oliver was not good at wand work. So, down to one of least favorites it was. "You would be right in that remark." He said to him, a little bitterly.

"I like potions, herbology, and history of magic." He finally answered. Rude comments aside. He wasn't really bad at the theory parts, had that pretty well. Proof being how he answered things in class. It was practical stuff that messed him up. His favorite classes reflected this in some way, shape, and form. Most of them didn't need wand's every day. Potions may need a wand to add 'magic' to the potion. There was a spell or two learned in herbology and history of magic. Though for the most part, no wands. He also found to really just like the subject material.

Wait. What was he doing? He again had to look at his books. To answer the question he'd been trying to do for a while now. Since Eric had distracted- Eric. This was all his fault. He kept getting him of topic and off focus. How could he? Oliver had thought initially that this might prove successful and that he would get so much work done with someone else near. Nope. Dead wrong. Eric was proving to be a distraction. Was this his plan all along? Do his work, and keep talking to Oliver so he could get nothing done at all?

HA! Not like Oliver would let that happen, not him. He was to good for that. Far to smart to. He would not get distracted, fall behind, fail the class, and have to retake first year all over again. If Eric wanted to play these games, Oliver could play to. "How about yours? What class do you like?" He would really get him now. Oliver did not look up from his work, talking and writing. Getting the question completed. He would win at studying. How ever one did that. He at least knew he would not lose.

If Oliver thought that it would require Eric to look up from his notes or homework in order to answer, gosh was he in for a rude awakening here. Though Eric did pause a bit, as if to think it over a bit his quill stilling for a few moments. He liked quite a few subjects. He was interested din flying because of his wish to make it into a broom racing team or even Quidditch. He was also interested in the defense against the dark arts, as...theoretical as he found it for now with thee exception of a few spells they were learning. "Flying sounds nice. Defense against the dark arts as well. Frankly as first years I don't think we have yet reached the point of studying the fun subjects. Like care for magical creatures and the such. Then again guess we'll have to wait." Then again he didn't really DISLIKE the subjects they had as first years either. "I guess overall I like most of them though."

Then he was back at writing. So the short-term "win" Oliver had was over once again. He got stuck at one of the homework points. "What did you answer at point 5?" Eric asked at some point. So...maybe the Gryffindor student never really wanted to "compete" to that extent with Oliver? Well...he did point out when Oliver made a mistake, maybe it was not to put salt on the wound but he was looking out for him? Or maybe...maybe now Eric was looking for take advantage of the situation? Gosh he was complicated. This whole situation was complicated. He was most likely putting Oliver through a rollercoaster of thoughts here on what his intentions really were. Though really the Gryffindor first year was quite simple in that aspect. He saw no reason to be petty, or to hide answers or be unnecessarily mean. Some competition...he found healthy, but he was counting on a fair "fight" here. Sportsmanship and all that mattered in such situations...or did they?
