❂《 ⌜ September 20, 2024 ▎ After Classes ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔“Old habits die hard.” Raizel grumbled as she stood just before the doors to the Duelling Club, finding herself brought here by her old habits of spellwork after class, mastering those that she had learned that day or even trying out the advance ones that she had picked up after stumbling across them during her quest for new and powerful spells. She thought she had gotten over it but yet here she is.
Not exactly the first time for there are still times that this exact same thing happened. The only thing different is that she chose to ignore the urge to enter during those times but not today… she didn’t. She pressed her palm onto that wooden heavy door, opening it and revealing the inside of what she used to call her favorite spot in all of Hogwarts aside from that certain area down the lakeside. Just a glimpse wouldn’t hurt hopefully. She knows that’s not happening for just being in the vicinity of this place brings forth bad memories.
Raizel frowned, shaking her head and was about to turn and leave before spotting a familiar face. That person, she recognizes them. The same one from the Training Pitch. “The person that got stuck in the hoop...” she uttered as she paused on her track, squinting her eyes to see if it was indeed that person. She may be bad at remembering names but those that she deemed ‘interesting’ would certainly leave a mark. From what she could see, they were asking something from the other person that was close to them.
A duel, from what she could hear or maybe she heard wrong. Now then, she’s retired from the duelling scene but it won’t hurt to watch a duel or two… right? Oh to heck with it, a part of her missed it while another feared what duelling is doing to her. But maybe just this once… “If you guys want someone to watch, I’m happy to help out if there’s no one else available.” she cursed in her mind but she couldn’t take back her words, the same thing that happened back when she agreed to be Dee’s Training Dummy.

Once again, Cass was spending their after class hours at the dueling club. It was becoming a habit, which didn't seem like a completely bad thing to them. In fact, it was hardly a bad thing at all. They may be setting things on fire, but at least they were setting things on fire within an environment with other people to put it out and it (probably) wouldn't land them another detention. Not that they cared! Although it was certainly nicer when they didn't get caught. Cleaning got a little repetitive after a while. Practically bouncing as they walked through the doors, they chucked their bag down in the corner and surveyed the collection of people currently at the club.
Previous afternoons had seen them both refereeing and dueling, though perhaps they should have picked someone a bit closer to their year as a first ever opponent. Soon though, they would know all new fancy ways to set people on fire! They had almost been motivated to pay attention in D.A.D.A! Almost. Hearing footsteps coming from behind them, they turned their head to look. It was Raizel! The absolutely wonderful second year, now third year, who had "assisted" them that one time they tried out their totally winning strategy for quidditch. She was sooooo cool. She knew all sorts of awesome spells. Even if she was... from a less than ideal background. They still weren't quite sure how they felt about that.
Maybe she was an exception? They didn't know. They didn't want to think about it. They didn't want to think. Was the room always this small? Why was it so quiet? Why was everyone just buzzing instead of talking? Their mouth moved on its own, yapping away without their brain following it. "Raizel! Can I call you Rai actually?" they asked "Oh do you duel? Or are you just here to watch? Can I duel you? Wait wait wait". After their word vomit in Raizels direction, somehow still grinning, they ran over to a random boy who looked about a second year. "Hi! My names Cass" they said "Are you here to duel? Do you want to duel me? Brilliant". If he didn't move away, they would drag him by the arm back over to Raizel and where they had been standing before.
"What about refeering? Do you want to referee me and..." they glanced at the boy "Anyway! Wonderful! Let's duel!". They didn't wait for an answer from either of the other two before walking onto a piste and picking a side. Dueling! It was going to be fun and awesome and it was going to start soon

Dueling Club | LOCATIONNico had always loved dueling, or at least the concept of it from an early age. Always sitting at the edge of his seat as his grandfather filled the boy's head with tales from his own youth. Duels back in his own schooling time and fights he had gotten into as a necessity from his past job as an auror. Whatever tale he was willing to tell, Nico was willing to listen. The tales had always sparked Nico's own active imagination; it had gotten to the point here he longed to be in a duel himself. To be able to feel the thrill of entering a battle based off magical prowess and knowledge to determine the victor. He wanted to win one, he wanted to be seen as powerful magically. Proving to himself and family he truly did belong, that he wouldn't be some let down like his elder brother.
Yet despite his love and intrigue for dueling; Nico never thought he would get roped into a duel in just the first month of the school year. Lately he had been making it a habit to visit the dueling club to practice spells on the dummy's, or watch other students duel each other. Figuring it was best to be able to see more of the sport before he finally got his own hands on experience with it. He wasn't expecting to be approached by a student who seemed around his age. Much less ready for them to ask if he wanted to duel them.
"I. Eh-" Nico felt like a fool stammering over his own words unable to get a solid response in asides from the nod of his head. Being dragged away almost immediately to who he assumed would be referring the duel between the two. Giving a meek wave to the older girl. Glancing between the two he couldn't help the flush of embarrassment on his face when his new opponent didn't even know his name. It wasn't like Nico knew theirs either but it somehow still stung. Though it didn't seem to bother them in the slightest as they already walked off and picked a side on an available piste in the room. Well, if they weren't going to think much and get right into things, Nico would as well.
"Sorry for bothering you with this." He said with a shrug to Raizel. Walking off to stand on the opposite side of the piste. Wand clenched tightly in his right hand, Nico took a deep breath attempting to calm his own nerves and stop his brain from running at a million miles an hour. He shifted on his feet, trying to find a more comfortable and fluid stance. An underlying excitement bubbling in him as he waited for any sort of que to start. Mind already set on an opening spell he'd attempt to launch at Cass.
This was it, this would be his first duel of hopefully many. Was it reckless and sudden, sure? But how else was he going to get some experience? Just go up and ask someone himself, that was to embarrassing. Looking at Cass he made a mental not to thank them later, they had spared Nico the humiliation of having to ask himself. He'd have to write to his grandfather all about this duel when it ended, well if he won. Nico was sure his grandfather would love to hear all about it.

❂《 ⌜ September 20, 2024 ▎ After Classes ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Excitable, this person is. What was their name again? Cass right? Her and her bad memory when it comes to names. Well, it could be worse like when she couldn’t even remember Becca’s name. Anyway, she was right when it came to them needing assistance. Being asked to duel wasn’t part of the plan but at least Cass decided to duel someone else and that’s the other person here in the room. Saved her from a duel. If it was her old self, she would’ve accepted that duel in a heartbeat but no.
She’s retired but with how things are going, with how she still kept on being drawn to this place despite how it filled her with nothing but misery, it wouldn’t be a surprise if she finds herself on that piste again in an official duelling event. Duelling had just been a part of her that’s hard to throw away just like that, she’s realizing it now the more she tries to stay away from it.
“Rai is fine.” When did that nickname stick? Who was even the first ever person to call her that? In any case, she had gotten used to it, after being called that by her closest friends. She watched as Cass went to position almost immediately after hearing an okay from their opponent and yeah, that sight was familiar. She looked at the other person that Cass asked for duel when he apologized, making her chuckle. “Don’t worry about it. I don’t really mind.” she told him before making her way to the piste to get this duel started.
“Hope we’ll have a nice duel here.” Raizel said to the two and the moment she said go, the two were ready to cast whatever spell that came to mind first. Their choice of spells were interesting. Cass going for a disarming charm to probably get that early game advantage against their opponent… right, she doesn’t know this person’s name. She should make it a habit of getting to know each other first before doing things. Back to the duel.
Cass’ spellcasting was alright but unfortunately for them, their attack misses. The boy they are facing just proved to be too nimble and to make it worse, that boy had managed to get a clean hit on Cass. Raizel winced at that hit. “That’s gotta hurt…” she uttered. Cass didn’t even make any effort in avoiding that perhaps due to the shock of their spell missing? Maybe. “Oi! You good there?” she asked. She had seen this happen, too frequently more than she likes during her official duels before. People were just standing there but at least Cass took action before falling onto a trance.

Readying their wand for a first cast that was going to be absolutely wonderful and very impressive, Cass shifted from foot to foot. Wand, wand, wand... It was very difficult to duel without one, which was why expelliarmus was one of their personal favourites. Not that they had ever used it in a duel before. But now was the perfect time to start! Though their casting was nothing exceptional, it was enough to preform the spell successfully. Or would have been if their aim wasn't absolutely terrible. They missed the boy by miles, unless they had been aiming for the wall the whole time. Which they hadn't. This time at least.
The boy (Cass only just realised that they hadn't even gotten his name) chose a more offensive approach for his first spell. His Flippendo was beautiful, though less beautiful to be on the receiving end of. The air was knocked out of Cass's lungs and they went sliding back across the piste a few feet. That hurt. But this was awesome. It was just the whole feeling that went with it. There was no room for thinking when you were busy dodging spells and trying to get a few hits in of your own. Grinning, they gave the boy a thumbs up to let him know they were fine.
"That was an awesome cast!" they said, still slightly winded but way too excited and happy and alive to care. "Whats your name?" they sort of yelled across the piste "Are you a duelist? Do you duel lots?".

Dueling Club | LOCATIONReadying his wand, Nico spun it in his hand. Once, twice, thrice before firmly holding it in place, bringing it in front of his face. He still couldn't quite believe it, none of the events from this year had truly registered with him at all quite yet. He had managed to weasel his way onto the dueling team, and now even if unexpectedly in his first duel before the season even started.
As soon as they were given the mark to start, Nico flicked his wand and said the incantation. Flipendo, his grandfather had always told him the best defense was offense. Merlin curse him if he didn't follow the advice of the man who raised him. Cass may have had a different idea, but Nico cursed himself out for not thinking of it. A well cast expelliarmus hurtling his way, Nico practically threw himself to the floor of the piste just to avoid it. The thrill of excitement settling in as he scrambled back onto his feet wand in hand. Seeing that the spell had hit them Nico paused, hesitation clouding his featured until they had given him a thumbs up.
An adrenaline induced smile made it's way onto Nico's lips. "Thanks, yours was to I'm just glad it didn't get me." He called back out, raising his own voice to make sure he was heard. "Romano, Nico Romano. Yours?" He questioned.
"Eh, I guess you could say that. And nope, this is my first one, what about you?" Getting ready to send out his next spell, Nico couldn't help but ask. Even though it seemed like they already had at east one or two duels under their belt by now. They had the brains to try and disarm him from the start, that very same though never even came to Nico's mind.

❂《 ⌜ September 20, 2024 ▎ After Classes ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔It was a relief to see that Cass was still doing okay and hopefully, it’ll stay that way until this duel reaches a proper conclusion which will be when either of these two are unable to battle anymore. While the two were striking a conversation, Raizel had already been taking notes, especially when it came to Cass’ opponent, specifically, his name. Nico, good to know. Better to know the names than not knowing at all. That reminds her of that certain Ravenclaw that took her so long to know her name. Becca, she won’t forget that any time soon.
With both duellists still ready to keep things going, Raizel prepared herself for what’s to come next, mostly because she sometimes finds herself being a target of a spell despite being only here to watch a match. Luckily, none went flying for her yet when spells were casted, both of those hitting their respective targets. Cass sent out a spell that she had found herself using before in some practice, the tongue tying one. The casting seemed a bit rough, perhaps Cass not used to it yet but at least it was successful. With that hitting Nico, the boy would find himself in an uncomfortable situation of being unable to speak, which also means, no spells from him until that wears off. “Nasty.”
Nico still kept at it with the damaging spell and Raizel wouldn’t blame him. This is after all, a sport where the last one standing wins… or at least, in this case. That Rictusempra looked powerful and she knows how uncomfortable that one is as well. That creeping feeling of being tickled, sending you into a fit of chuckle and laughter. Cass is starting to look exhausted with all those spells hitting them but still looking like they could continue so there’s no need for her to put a stop to it just yet.

Nico had a very fancy spinny wand thing that they instantly wanted to try. It looked like lots of fun, till you dropped it in the middle of a duel and had to run around scrambling to catch it while your opponents took the advantage you gave them and set you on fire. But where was the reward without the risk? Speaking of names (actually, not speaking of names at all), they had already told him theirs. Maybe he didn't hear. Oh well, no harm in repeating themself. "I'm Cass. Cass Ito" they yelled back from across the piste. "Its my second!" they said "I think. But I have refereed some before. I'm one of Slytherins dueling co-captains". The older years knew sooo many cool spells. They were officially very jealous. Third year couldn't come fast enough for them, even if second year had just barely started.
Enough of the chat though. It was time to win this duel. Or at least put up a very good fight. They didn't really mind. The fun was in the experience. If expelliarmus hadn't worked, that was fine. They had plenty of other spells up their sleeve to stop the other from being able to cast. With a cry of "Mimblewimble!" they cast the spell. It was no amazing piece of work, probably being just barely competent. What mattered though, was that it had hit Nico. "Yes!" they said, and jumped into the air with joy. They had accomplished their one goal for the duel. "Sorry" they said to the now mute boy.
Unfortunately for them, in all their joy they hadn't focused on the spell coming at them. Cass was hit with a beautifully cast Rictusempra and burst into laughter. That was alright! It was funny, even if a little painful.
