Amadea Campbell, Frost Cira, & Maisy Dane
It was that time of year again, and Amadea was still trying to comprehend it all. Time had been flying by at a rate faster than she had ever felt it before, and Amadea was still trying to process everything that was happening. She couldn't believe that the summer was already over. She still couldn't believe that her first year at Hogwarts was over as well. She was officially a second year and couldn't be happier.
Now that Amadea was familiar with the workings of the castle, she knew what to expect during her second year. Of course, the work would be much harder and she would probably have less time to spend with her friends, but Amadea was ready for it. Well, she was going to be ready for it. That was why she had come to Diagon Alley the second they got their supply lists for the upcoming year. She wanted to get her books as soon as possible so she could do some pre-reading before heading to classes. It might seem like she was trying to be an overachiever, but Amadea didn't care what others thought. She wouldn't sacrifice her grades for what people thought of her.
Amadea pushed open the door of Flourish and Blotts, surprised to find that it was fairly crowded inside the store. She hadn't expected to see so many people there but considering there were seven years worth of students attending Hogwarts that needed to buy supplies, Amadea figured it wasn't as surprising as she thought it was. She didn't see any people she recognized but wasn't looking very closely. She was on a mission to find all of her books.
After searching through the aisles and marveling at the sheer number of books lining the shelves, Amadea began to look around. She noticed a lot of families shopping together and felt a pang in her stomach. She wished that her parents would partake in this experience with her, but they refused. Her mother was a Muggle and her father was a Squib who wanted nothing to do with the wizarding world. Amadea was almost surprised he hadn't disowned her yet. Shaking her negative thoughts from her head, Amadea glanced down at the paper in her hand yet again to make sure she was searching for the right books when she felt herself collide with something.
Looking up, she realized that she hadn't been watching where she was walking and had accidentally run into a display of books, spilling them everywhere. Her face automatically went red. Of course, this had to happen. It was just her luck. Her clumsy self had to ruin everything yet again. Luckily, there were only two other people in the aisle, though the clatter of books had probably startled more than just those two.
"I'm so sorry," Amadea said, unsure if she was apologizing to the girls or to the books. Then again, considering books were inanimate objects, it would make much more sense that she was apologizing to the girls. "I-I'm so very clumsy. Sorry to bother you!" She bent down to begin gathering up the mess of books that she had created.

There was something certainly special to places like this. Bookstores and libraries. The shelves lined with books of all sorts. The smell of paper and dust. Just the vibes these places threw off were so enticing.
Breathing in the welcoming smell of books, Frost let her mind loose. How had the first year of school pass by so quickly? She could swear that just a few days ago she was getting sorted by the sorting hat. All of the friends she had made, all the adventures she had taken part in all leaked into each other and bonded to create her first year at Hogwarts.
But alas, the ginger had come here to do something other than stand there like a weirdo and contemplate her life choices. The red and gold book still sat in her trusty knapsack, along with other objects she liked to keep handy. How she managed to get the book soaked with lake water was something the girl was mildly ashamed to admit. I mean, he wasn't even done reading it! And to make it worse, it was a present from her father from when she started the first year.
Sighing, Frost shook her head at herself. How could someone be so careless? "Accidentally" dropping your own knapsack while walking by the lake, soaking some of the contents that had fallen out? How? It wasn't possible. Especially since the girl wasn't the least bit clumsy.
The ginger opened up the leather bag and pulled out the book she had so despertely tried to save and dry off. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" was the title. Father was a caretaker for magical creatures and had indefinately rubbed some of his love for creatures onto his daughter. So the book seemed fitting.
Frost ran the tip of her finger along one of the spines of a book on one of the book displays, trying to find another copy of her wet book. Pushing her glasses up with one finger, the girl moved to the other side of the display, scanning it over with her eyes.
All of a sudden, loud thuds came from right in front of her. It startled the girl quite a bit, making her jump back by instinct. Several books had been knocked off of the display. Frost's hazel eyes searched around for the person who had done it.
There, just beyond her reach, stood a girl about her age. The girl was about the same height, maybe taller, with firey orange curls and sparkling blue-green eyes. Her pale cheeks were crimson red.
"I'm so sorry. I-I'm so very clumsy. Sorry to bother you!" She spoke, obviously speaking to Frost and the other girl in the aisle.
Frost bent down to help pick up some of the books the girl had dropped. Shaking her head, she spoke to the reddened girl. "Oh, dear. It's alright. I'll help you pick them up." She slid the soaked book back into her bag so that she'd have both arms available. "Mistakes happen all the time, don't you worry!" She eyed the other aisles and pointed to her left. "Let's just hope you don't get in trouble by them."
Shoving books into her arm and placing them back onto the display, Frost was stopped by a pair of shoes. Looking up from her spot on the ground, a girl around their age looked down at her, her blonde hair tucked behind her ear on one side.
"Oh, I'm sorry miss. Am I in your way?" The ginger stood up and scootched over to the left a little bit, smiling at the blonde girl.

Maisy, who was in very little mood to go anywhere at all with her family, had spent the last several hours ducking in and out of stores in Diagon Alley, in search of school supplies she'd insisted she was old enough to get on her own. Her mother had tried to insist, but after the row they'd had the night before, the older woman had seemed to understand her daughter's sudden need for independence.
So far she'd done alright. She'd gotten a new robe (one of her last split at the seam from her encounter with Sebastian and Luke), several new quills and pods of ink, a fresh collection of vials for potions and last on her list were the necessary books.
Inside, Flourish and Blotts was a mad house of last minute shoppers and Maisy, quite small as it was, felt, for the first time all afternoon, mildly unsure of herself. Standing off to the side, she was studying her list with such intent that when she heard the racket behind her, she nearly leapt clean out of her skin. She'd spun to find two girls, each varying shades of copper, bent over a stack of books that had met its downfall.
Two red heads and a blonde...
It sounded like the name of a band her father might listen to. This was the thought that punctuated the chaos as she stared at the display that had crashed to the floors with a startling clatter. Behind the desk, the clerk was too preoccupied with customers to take much notice, and for this, Maisy was grateful, as she was in no mood to hear anyone get told off. The young Slytherin knew all too well the unfortunate ramifications of clumsiness, and she felt for anyone who wound up in a mess because of a misguided nudge or bump.
"Miss?" Maisy finally said, when one of the girls looked up to address her, and with a perfunctory laugh, she shook her head, "You're fine!" She continued, crouching down, "I just wanted to help's all..."
Her eyes flickered over to the girl who had disrupted the books in the first place and Maisy offered an easy, comforting smile, "I'm the biggest klutz in the world. Not a day goes by where I'm not tripping over something or someone or... Hm. Anyhow... These look alright." Glancing at one of the books that fell, she turned it over, studying it for any splits or glaringly noticeable marks, "No harm done, right."

Flabbergasted, Amadea almost wanted to slap the other two girls to make sure they were feeling okay. Instead of being angry at Amadea for ruining the display and causing a ruckus, they were smiling and telling her it was okay. One of the girls even joked about how clumsy she was.
Amadea shook her head, unable to put into words how much she related to that statement. It would probably take both of her hands to count the amount of times in this single day she had tripped or knocked something over. It was all accidental, of course, but Amadea couldn't help it. She was quite skilled at managing to trip on a flat surface. Amadea would call it a skill if it hadn't always been such a hassle in her life. She had broken valuables, accidentally knocked into other people, and even almost killed someone. Her klutziness was something she would happily do without.
"Thank you so much," Amadea gasped, scrambling to collect the last of the books. "I'm the biggest klutz in the whole world." It might sound like a hyperbole, but Amadea wasn't kidding. She would have happily gone into detail if she wasn't so embarrassed. She sighed, shaking her head at her embarrassing fall. She willed her cheeks to return to a normal color, hoping that it worked. As she looked at the two girls who were helping her, Amadea recognized them from around the school, but couldn't place either of their names. Nevertheless, she appreciated their kindness. She stood, carefully placing the last book back on the display, hoping that none of the employees at Flourish and Blotts would notice.
As she did this, she stuck out a hand to introduce herself. "I'm Amadea, by the way," she said, smiling. "This isn't an ideal way to meet, eh?" she joked. She had to admit, she had a habit of meeting people in peculiar ways. She supposed it was better to meet someone in a peculiar way than to not meet them at all. It gave them something to talk about if nothing else.

The blonde girl had just wanted to help, crouching down beside Frost and picking up a few books as well. The three girls crawled along the floor, scrambling to pick up books and put them back onto the display. It must've been quite a sight. I mean, it's not every day you see a bunch of twelve year olds on the floor looking like they're having a friendly match of "I bet I can pick up more books than you".
The girl who had knocked over the books in the first place thanked them, talking about how she was the biggest kluts in the world. Frost laughed a little. "Well, I haven't been clumsy in my whole twelve years of existence. But this isn't that bad." She placed several books back onto the display, fixing them so that they looked as if they never fell.
The ginger could have sworn that she saw the other redhead at least a few times. Maybe not directly, but she definitely had. The blonde she had maybe seen around school before once or twice, but that's it. Frost just could not place a name to either of their faces.
Amadea? The ginger made sure to remember her name this time. She smiled at the girl, Amadea, and the girl with beautiful blonde hair. "Well, it's nice to meet you Amadea. But I swear I've seen you before," She shook her head. Maybe she would remember from where another time. "I'm Frost." The girl laughed a little bit. "I couldn't have thought of a better way to meet," She spoke the words teasingly, fining the last of the books.

Maisy giggled at Amandea's response, shaking her head as she continued to gather the books. She highly doubted the girl was actually the biggest klutz in the world, but the blonde understood all too well how that feeling could arise. She brought to mind the several disasters her first year at Hogwarts and a tower of books toppling seemed hardly of note anymore. And when you added magic into the mix? Well, it was almost as if they were asking for trouble!
"I'm Maisy!" She answered back, before her cheeks colored. Most people who'd heard of her knew her for one of two incidences... The first being when she'd exposed a rather nasty letter she'd received about her blood status, in the Slytherin section of the paper, the other being when, during her stint as Prefect, she'd throw a boy's wand (entirely by accident) into the Whomping Willow. Sometimes, she wondered if she ought to stop addressing herself by her full name. But then, in truth, she wasn't embarrassed of either occurrence half as much as she was the edge of notoriety it lent her, "Maisy Dane."
Rising to her feet and brushing herself off, she looked between the two and smiled brilliantly, "You've both got such unusual names! Very pretty! I was named after a relative, myself! Seems all the names in this world as so different from what I'm used to back home!" Then again, what wasn't. A year in and she was still overwhelmed by it all... It almost made what her parents did to Charlie understandable. Almost...
"Are you both second year, too? I am. I'm terribly excited! I didn't expect to learn half as much as we did last year! It's wild, isn't it??"

Amadea laughed and smiled at the girls. She could only imagine what all of the other people in the store were thinking as they watched the three girls scrambling around on the floor picking up books. They probably looked very odd, but Amadea didn't care. As she stood, smoothing out her clothes, she listened to the girls introduce themselves. Now that Amadea had time to fully look at the two girls, she had to admit she did recognize them. She recognized Maisy as a former Prefect. The other girl, Frost, looked familiar as well, but Amadea couldn't remember what it was from.
"It's nice to meet you both," she greeted them, sticking out her hand. "I don't think I was named after anyone...well, at least my first name. My middle name, Ellery, is after my grandmother." Amadea wasn't sure why she kept rambling on about her name. Maybe it was because she had nothing else to talk about and she wanted to fill the silence with something. Thankfully, Maisy was able to segway into a different topic: the dreaded talk about school.
"Yes, I am a second year," Amadea said, savoring the way the words felt coming out of her mouth. If she was being quite honest, it was all still so surreal to her. She could barely believe she made it through her first year without failing and now she was already moving on to her second one. It felt like a dream, but no matter how many times she pinched herself, she still didn't wake up. She supposed that meant she really wasn't dreaming. "I am so excited for second year! First year was absolutely amazing! I had so much fun. It was a lot of work though, and I expect that we'll have even more work this year."
Amadea made a face. She certainly loved most aspects of school, but the loads of schoolwork they had piled on them was something she hadn't missed over the summer. She could almost always guarantee that between her Prefect duties and schoolwork, she would be up until late at night trying to get everything done. Plus, she was hoping to join some more extracurriculars to meet new people and try new things. Hopefully she wouldn't be attempting too much.

Frost took Amadea's outstretched hand and gave it a firm shake. She smiled at her. "I quite like your name, Amadea." Both of the girl in front of her had incredible auras to them. A certain warmness. It was as if the sun was smiling down at her. The girl pushed up her glasses, peering through the lenses at Maisy and Amadea.
"I myself was named after a lovely old woman that cared for my mother when she was growing up." The ginger dusted herself off. The floor, like most floors, had a little dust and dirt here and there, some had rubbed off onto her skirt when she was picking up books. She smiled at the girls she had just recetly met.
Maisy had asked if they were second years at Hogwarts, seeming excited as well. "Yes, I am. I'm in Hufflepuff, actually. What house did you guys get sorted into?" Frost beamed, forgetting for a little what she came here to do and what she was looking for. Not that it really mattered what house they were in. She still would try to be friends with them even if they didn't go to Hogwarts at all.
"Ah, yes, second year," The girl sighed a happy little sigh. "I can't wait to go back to Hogwarts for second year. I absolutely love it there." She laughed at what Amadea said. Though more schoolwork for students to do did seem a little daunting now, it was probably nothing that they couldn't handle. It was worth it to do tons of homework to learn spells and other such things. Either that or die trying.
"I'm just going to try to get into more things and make sure that it's going to be so much better than the first year." And that was saying something. The first year of Hogwarts might have been the best year she's had in her whole twelve years of living.

What house did you guys get sorted into.
On a grand scale, not Maisy's most favorite question to answer. There was a stigma that unfortunately came with being a Slytherin. Most claimed to be above it, but she saw it anyway, the way their eyes widened ever so slightly, or they sucked in a sharp breath... They'd smile and nod, and claim they didn't mind. Then they'd never speak to her again. And really, with bozos like Luke around, it wasn't exactly a mystery why... But it was painful for someone who was generally more accustomed to having no difficulties where making friends was concerned.
But she hadn't been raised to lie, and no matter how angry she was with her parents at the moment, the simple truth was she still wanted to do right by what they'd taught her. Biting her lips, she tucked her hair back over her ear and dipped her shoulders into a shrug, "Slytherin." Without looking up, she dropped her hand to rub the inside of her elbow, "Hasn't... hasn't been exactly easy. There's a lot of people who don't much care for... my sort. But I suppose it goes away after a while. I'm sure this'll be loads better. And there's more good there than most people expect." She'd met and befriended her fair share, after all, of decent, well mannered Slytherins.
"The House gets a bad rap, onacountof, well... You know. But honestly? I'd say it's probably the same in any house. There's good and bad wherever you look... Especially in a place big as Hogwarts!"

Amadea smiled at both girls. They seemed like really nice people. In the grand scheme of things, Amadea had lucked out. The situation she had just gotten herself into could have ended much worse than it had. Luckily, both girls were amicable and didn't seem angry that Amadea had interrupted their book browsing.
As Frost explained that she was a Hufflepuff, something clicked in Amadea's brain. That's why she looked familiar. They shared a House! Amadea had probably seen Frost in the common room or in the dormitories a few times before, which was why she was so familiar looking. As Frost kept talking, Amadea realized that the two girls had similar aspirations for second year. Maybe they could join a club together!
Amadea turned to listen to Maisy. The girl said she was a Slytherin, and the first thought that went through Amadea's mind was, Wow, I never would have guessed. Even though Amadea tried not to believe the stigmas associated with the houses, she couldn't help but do it slightly anyway. After all, the Sorting Hat sorted them based on their personalities and where they would belong the most. Amadea was surprised that Maisy was so nice and yet still in the House full of very rude people. As Maisy continued on about how Slytherins got a bad rap, Amadea immediately felt guilty for her thinking. She shouldn't judge people that easily, especially not just because of a House. Amadea sighed, disappointed in herself for being so shallow.
"I'm a Hufflepuff," Amadea said. "I really love my House. I think I have yet to meet a Hufflepuff that is rude. And I'm sorry to hear about your House, Maisy. It isn't fair that people are judging you based on how some of your Housemates act. It's not fair that they act that way to you. I'm glad you've had a good time at Hogwarts though!" Amadea sincerely felt bad for the poor Slytherin. No one deserved to be treated that way, especially by the people in their own house! Amadea felt so at home whenever she was in the Hufflepuff common room and she couldn't imagine feeling unwelcome by the people inside of it. It just made her grateful yet again for everything she had been blessed with since she had received her Hogwarts letter.
