Hogwarts/West Tower/Owlery - Spectacle the Owl. 534 words.

Lily-Rose stopped counting the stairs midway to the owlery.
Her mother had never told her about the number of stairs she would have to climb when coming to Hogwarts. It must have been something she kept hidden. It must have been something all parents kept hidden from their children before sending them off to school.
Lily believed she was in rather good shape from all the swimming she had done growing up. But nothing could have prepared her for Hogwarts' elevation; by that, she meant the innumerable staircases around the school.
Finally reaching the owlery, Lily-Rose stopped to catch her breath. When the taste of blood dissipated, she looked up at the building in front of her. There was nothing special about the owlery. Its design was plain, but it was the sign hanging on top of the entrance that made her smile.
"Non magnitudem creaturae, at magnitudem cordis pollet." She read out loud.
"The size of the heart should be big enough." She agreed with the quote. There were no particular reasons why Lily-Rose could read and understand Latin, other than the fact her grandfather was a language connoisseur who literally overshared with her when she was younger.
Not only did the man speak more than fourteen languages. He also dabbled in Gobbledegook, Troll, and Mermish. He was one of the rare wizards who had worked on the dead Aramaic language better to understand the origin of the dreadful killing curse.
Lily-Rose had always admired her grandfather. Speaking of which, she could probably write to him and her grandmother now that she had made it to the owlery.
"Why not kill two birds with one stone?" She spoke to herself before she realized what she said. She covered her mouth, afraid an owl could have heard her unfortunate Muggle play on word. She waited a moment and finally relaxed when the owls did not come flying out at her.
"Not what I meant to say." She said apologetically as if they heard her anyway.
Sighing with relief, Lily finally entered the first level of the owlery, pulling out of her bag the ink, feather, and parchment she had brought to write her mother a first letter.
First, however, she needed to find Spectacle. The owl was not hard to find: she spotted it as soon as she walked to the owlery's second level as if it were waiting for her. She wouldn't be surprised if it did. Her mother's owl always seemed to have a second sense for moments like these. The owl could have been anywhere: at home, flying over Surrey, but no, it was here, at Hogwarts, in the owlery, where she needed it to be. It was a magical owl, after all.
Lily handed Spectacle a treat before she settled to write her first letter to her mother and father, followed by one for her grandparents. Before long, she sent Spectacle off, letting him know where he had to drop by.
She trusted it. She knew her letters would make it safe.
