While earning O's in glorified gardening might not particularly stand out in one's transcripts, it didn't mean Amelie found the subject of Herbology any less fascinating. Straight forward enough, and more importantly; fun. A word that had become less and less abundant in the Hufflepuff's vocabulary. Ungrateful she was not, considering it was her house out of all that stood the most welcoming. Something had just been just off.

Being away from home only a few weeks had already presented its challenges, the cold Scottish air that clung to her lungs a reminder of just how far she was. No warm embrace of her mother when she stumbled in late, no echo of her siblings laughter filling the halls. It was odd, the silence. Not to suggest that Hogwarts was anything less than quiet, a place with more going on than she even knew what to do with. It just wasn’t the same noise, the kind that felt familiar.

It was in Herbology that she could acquire at least some sense of normalcy. There was something comforting about the grime, pulling at stubborn roots and tending plants into bloom. It was tangible, simple, all of the things her new life wasn’t. The autumn chill, odd glances exchanged between her peers, and don't even get her started on the moving staircases— for all of these factors shared one common trait. Things that were out of her control. But a pot of Shrivelfig? That, she could manage.

In fact, it was the only reason she found herself in the first-year greenhouse to begin with. Here, surrounded by rows of plants with odd shapes and even odder names, the world felt manageable. Not to mention being the easiest hiding place; its damp, earthy scent clinging to the metal fortress making hardly for anyone's first choice. And yet, she hummed anyway.

The euphoria of going to Hogwarts still wasn't going to pass, the colder temperatures than his hometown, the distance from his family, the fact that he missed his Puffskeins, and even not being able to go anywhere outside of Hogwarts like he could at home didn't darken his mood. The fact that he was at a magical school made him get out of bed in the morning and even filled him with something distantly similar to a sense of pride. There was nothing to be proud of, he hadn't done anything to get here, but Michael still hadn't been expelled from the school, so he was doing well, although to be honest he had no idea what he had to do to get expelled.

His joy was lifted by the magical atmosphere of Hogwarts, even for a child who had grown up surrounded by magic. Michael had dreamed of coming here since childhood, and everything fascinated him: the living portraits, magic lessons, the stadium for Quidditch and the forest with magic creatures he had never seen before. All this couldn't do anything but enchant the 11 year old.

Despite the fact that before taking the train Michael told himself that he would arrive at the castle a completely different person, but one train journey cannot change a person. And already being at Hogwarts he just couldn't with his love for plants not to look in the greenhouses. The smell of fresh earth and fertiliser immediately filled the first-year's lungs as he entered. There was a whole bunch of different kinds of plants that caused nothing but a sigh of amazement from the freshman. With a quick glance around the greenhouse he noticed a girl, she was also a freshman (not surprising since he was in the greenhouse for first-years) and she was from the same house as him. Michael didn't worry about disturbing the girl and immediately approached her, starting a conversation. "Hi! This is your first time at Hogwarts, isn't it? You're a first year, am I right? And you're from Hufflepuff? Just like me, that's sooo cool! What do you think of Hogwarts? Have you had a look round? What do you think of the food?" He rambled on, almost without pausing for a breath of air, and a second after that he extended his hand for a handshake. "I'm Michael, by the way, and you are?"
